ADVOCACY Members Build Relationships, Engage Local Leaders, Support The Diversion

In 2018, HBA of F-M and members engaged in Minnesota’s legislative session, traveling to participate in the Builders Association of Minnesota’s Day at the Capitol. At the same time, members worked with the North Dakota Association of Builders and our colleagues across the state to prepare for the coming year’s session in North Dakota. The HBA was diligent in connecting with those running in local elections, hosting three candidate forums in the spring, and meeting one-on-one with more than 15 candidates vying for seats in North Dakota’s legislature in the fall. The HBA supports the FM Area Diversion, the preferred project moving forward. We took an active role in the comment process for Minnesota’s latest environmental review of the “Plan B” for the Fargo-Moorhead Flood Risk Management Project. The project recently received a permit from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and work will move ahead. A future challenge will be seeking additional funding for the project from the North Dakota Legislature in this year’s session.

“What advocacy means for my business is relationship building with other people in the industry, community and municipalities. Take it a step further, and you get to build those same types of relationships with people at the state or national level. “Because of my involvement with Home Builders Association, I have a relationship with the mayors and feel comfortable approaching them when I see them, even when there isn’t an ‘ask’ involved. “Helping certain projects be successful begins with leveraging state or federal money and relationships. When we do this, it helps our community grow. When the community grows, our businesses grow. “But it’s not just about money and my business. These skills and relationships also help me develop as an individual. I’m wired to interact with people. That’s what fulfills me. Members Interact With Students, Focus On NDSCS Career Workforce Academy

You struggle to find qualified workers. We’ve found there are endless ways to connect with local schools, parents and students. In 2018, HBA of F-M and Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation refined their focus to assist members in interacting with local students, making sure to provide hands-on activities. We organized work site tours for high school students that coincided with our Parade of Homes in the spring and fall. Members also took part in a Walk Into My Future event, part of a community program called “Seeds For Hope,” with a goal to build career awareness for kindergarteners through fifth graders. Home Builders Care awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships and continued engaging the youngest industry proteges through its Lego Homebuilding Competition at the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show. Most importantly, HBA pledged $100,000 toward North Dakota State College of Science’s Career Workforce Academy. Home Builders Care also pledged $100,000, and we are now well underway for fundraising another $800,000 from HBA members. This academy will allow students to enter the workforce sooner, with technical education certificates and skills. The trades will be promoted to grades K-14 on a continual basis.

“The workforce shortage is affecting our industry greatly. I’ve heard of people turning down projects because they can’t accommodate them. The lack of labor has impacted their costs. Personally, our trade partners see it every day. They’re putting in extra hours and implementing measures to deal with it. They are getting the work done, but it’s a struggle. “Being involved with hosting a tour for the high school students was a highlight of my fall. Some of them didn’t realize there are all of the different trades involved with building a home. Many of the students thought that a career in the industry is picking up a hammer and making $10 an hour, which is definitely not the case. I enjoy doing my part to reach out to students and make them aware of all the possibilities. “Having builders involved with the students first-hand gives our industry credibility, whether it’s a work site tour or other mentoring opportunities. GIVING BACK Members Offer Helping Hands Across The Community

Each year brings new ways for us to shine the spotlight on our generous and highly skilled industry in the community. In 2018, the highlight was completing the final stage in transforming the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Youth Home into an inspiring and healing residence for the at-risk youth who live there. This was accomplished through the HBA of F-M in partnership with its Remodelers Council and Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation. This endeavor was covered by every major media outlet in the community and brought deserved coverage to our giving members. The Remodelers Council also repaired a fence for the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality and constructed a handicap-accessible ramp for a Moorhead resident suffering from liver, lung and bone cancer. Toward the end of 2018, members participated in the North Dakota Association of Builders’ Blood Drive and the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. They donated personal care and housekeeping items for F5 residents. F5 serves former inmates to deter repeat offenses. It offers them housing and support to re-enter the workforce. Last, but not least, Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary and raised a record amount for its programming at the annual Fish Dinner fundraiser.

“In the building industry, as well as a lot of others, it seems like the negatives always get more coverage than the positives. That is a big reason why I like to try and help out with as many community projects as I am able to. I take an immense amount of personal pride in all of the jobs I do. For me there is no better feeling than a heartfelt thank you after completing a project. “Last year I was able to help complete the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Youth Home remodel. The appreciation those kids had for something that most of us take for granted was amazing. I get the same feeling when we complete ramps for neighbors in our community that are experiencing hardships. When you see the burden lifted from someone that has been struggling just to access their home, it makes you realize how fortunate a lot of us are. “As a small company, we get most of our work through word of mouth. We don’t spend much on advertising and being active in the HBA and Home Builders Care is a great way to meet new people and gain customers. As you can see by glancing through this report, we had a productive year engaging with students on a one-to-one basis with hands-on activities. Thank you all for your support and contribution toward these efforts! We also launched an effort to raise $1 million toward the North Dakota State College of Science’s Career Workforce Academy. To date, we’ve raised just over half that pledge, with our two organizations contributing $200,000, plus the membership atlarge pledging $319,000. Please consider your contribution today! We are proud to support and be an integral part of this exciting solution that not only benefits our industry members, but also provides satisfying and rewarding careers for generations to come.

Giving Back To Our Community Our two organizations collaborate constantly and in meaningful ways. We are always interested in connecting with members who would like to give back using the valuable skills only our industry can provide. Examples are constructing handicap-accessible ramps, or assisting other nonprofits, such as Rebuilding Together Fargo-Moorhead Area or Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity, with their needs and projects. We also have plenty of “non-skilled” ways to give back, like our annual holiday drive benefiting a local nonprofit, or participating in the Red Kettle Campaign for the Salvation Army.

Strategy For The Future, Advocacy And Membership Focus Both the HBA and Home Builders Care began strategic planning processes in 2018. As an Association and a Foundation, we must serve our long-time loyal members and emerging leaders who may have different priorities and goals than those of their parents. We revised vision and mission statements to convey our message as forward-thinking and innovative organizations. It’s exciting to continue working on our future! Outside of workforce development, the HBA’s top advocacy targets were state legislative sessions and elections, along with continued involvement in and work on the F-M Area Diversion. We also focused on recruitment of Builder members (Associate members outnumber our Builder members about three to one) and redirecting actions on an office facility. Our goal is to remodel our current space to allow for productive member-focused meetings and higher efficiencies by staff. We hope you continue using the HBA and Home Builders Care as ways to connect to your industry and give back. If you aren’t currently engaged, make a change in 2019 and get involved! We’ve got something for everyone.
