Family Fun

Kids to compete for prizes at Lego Homebuilding Competition Legos are the gateway to bigger building dreams, and Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation wants your junior builder for its third annual Lego Homebuilding Competition! Held Feb. 25 at the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show, children ages 5 to 12 will compete in building houses out of Legos. Structures can be single or multi-family, but must be homes. The homes will be judged on creativity, structure and livability. Free for children meeting the age requirements, there are only 20 spots available in each of the four age groups. Pre-registration is required using the form at www.hbcfm.com. Each registrant will receive two free tickets to enter the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show (admission to the show is $10; children age 18 and under are free). Must pre-register by Feb. 22. Culinary Butchery, BBQ and Grilling: NDSU BBQ Boot Camp

Do you know where your favorite cut of meat comes from? If you answered “The grocery store,” then you can learn a lot from this workshop. The texture, tenderness, juiciness and even flavor of that cut of meat are the result of a process that begins with the species and genetics of the animal, the environment where they were raised, the feed or forage they ate, how they were harvested, how the carcass was chilled and processed, where that cut of meat came from on that carcass, and then how the meat was seasoned and cooked. Come watch and interact with the instructors from the NDSU BBQ Boot Camp as they butcher a side of pork and show you where your favorite wholesale and retail cuts of pork come from. They will make comparisons to other species such as beef and lamb and explain why some cuts of meat are better for traditional BBQ (low temperature for a longer period of time) and others for high heat grilling. They will also offer some tips on seasonings and side dishes as well as picking out the best grill for your backyard lifestyle. Growing Fruit in the North: Joe Bergeson, Bergeson Nursery

From classic favorites like apples, plums, rasberries, and rhubarb to lesser known fruits like gooseberries, honeyberries, and Canadian sour cherries, there are many delicious fruits we can grow in our challenging Northern climate. More about our workshop presenters BBQ Boot Camp BBQ Boot Camp is a collaborative effort of animal scientists in North Dakota State University’s Animal Sciences Department and agents from the NDSU Extension Service. BBQ Boot Camp sessions are held in various locations during the summer, and will make a first appearance at this year’s Home & Garden Show! BBQ Boot Camp instructors, led by Eric Berg, a professor in animal sciences, will introduce participants to grilling methods, including smoking and cooking with gas and charcoal. Instructors will describe the merits of various meat cuts and explain how cooking temperatures, humidity and the composition of the meat from different animal species can affect the barbecuing process. Participants also will learn about nutrition, food safety and techniques such as using rubs, marinades and seasonings. Joe Bergeson Joe Bergeson bought Bergeson Nursery, near Fertile, Minnesota, from his brother after managing it for several years. The nursery was started in 1937 by his grandparents, Olga and Melvin. Joe’s specialty is answering questions and helping people design their landscapes. He is responsible for designing the flower beds in Bergeson Nursery’s summer display gardens, and his passion is hybridizing roses. Bergeson Nursery specializes in selling bare root trees, shrubs, and fruiting plants in the spring, as well as providing high quality bedding plants. In the summer, staff plant several acres of showy display gardens designed to educate and provide a beautiful tour. Accent Kitchen & Bath Accent Kitchen & Bath is a design-build remodeling company. This includes small room renovations to major additions for both commercial and residential properties. Accent also provides products for the new construction industry as well. Accent’s experienced staff has vast installation knowledge, allowing them to deliver projects as budgeted with designs that meet customers expectations. DIY Fails DIY Fails involves representatives from Hebron Brick Supply, Livewire Electrical Contracting, Showplace Kitchens and Smart Spaces, Inc. Hebron Brick sources building materials, fireplaces sales and service, and landscaping sales and service. Livewire is a veteran-owned electrical contracting business operated by brothers Jason and Steve Stachowski. Showplace Kitchens handles remodels, additions, new construction or re-facing featuring its American-made Showplace cabinetry. Updated railings & refreshed metal colors: 5 remodeling trends for 2017 by Krista Mund

Trends that were hot 30 years ago, can make a home look incredibly dated today. Think about golden oak woodwork and staircase spindles with curve and detail. Picture brass lighting and plumbing fixtures. Accent Kitchen & Bath Sales Associate Tim Liebl says homeowners constantly ask Accent for help in refreshing those kinds of details. Here are the top five trends he sees locally:

1. Retro metal colors in softer versions Liebl refers to some of those same 80s and 90s colors coming back in softer versions for cabinetry hardware and plumbing fixtures. Instead of polished brass, Accent offers champagne brass, which is a brushed gold version. Instead of oil-rubbed bronze, suppliers have vibrant brushed bronze that has taken on copper tones. “The three main metal colors of chrome, brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze still look awesome, but they are used a lot,” he says. “Homeowners are looking for other avenues to create unique designs.” An example of a faucet from Kohler in a softer version of bronze: vibrant brushed bronze

2. Railing systems Accent Kitchen & Bath regularly revitalizes railing systems in older homes. Liebl calls it a “revolution in railing systems” where owners opt to either paint them white mixed with expresso, or delete dated-looking spindles and replace them with wires or rods.” “Some of the metal rods can play in nicely to the industrial trend that is so hot right now,” he says. “We’re seeing customers who want that look of a loft in their homes, and this is an easy way to add to that overall theme.” Similar to cabinetry designs, Liebl notes a trend of clean, square designs in spindles, newels and handrails.

3. Dark on dark, light on light Dark flooring is a hit. In general, people want a warm feel, and Liebl says dark floors allow for universal design which can accommodate industrial, rustic and contemporary design in residential homes. “Also, when we see trends in cabinets and flooring, we’re seeing people putting dark cabinets on dark floors, and light countertops on light cabinets,” he says. If a home has light floors, light cabinets and light countertops, it can begin to feel cold and sterile, whereas tying light elements together and dark elements together creates more warmth.

4. Minnesota rustic Liebl says Accent Kitchen & Bath has coined a design style he likes to call “Minnesota rustic.” It’s a result of combining black tones with copper mixtures, paired with slate accents and a lighter paint color. For instance, the black tones can be through a stain on the wood, and the slate accents will naturally bring in stone with a rust and blue/green hue. “Because of improved lighting in our homes, we don’t have to be afraid of the dark anymore with our designs,” he says. “ LED lighting is brilliant and the dark tones don’t feel as overpowering.” A “Minnesota rustic” bathroom designed by Accent Kitchen & Bath incorporates darker black tones with copper mixtures, paired with slate accents and a lighter paint color.

5. Technology-delivered designs Accent Kitchen & Bath now offers virtual reality design to its customers, so they can see a finished space before demolition even begins. Accent can superimpose colors, flooring, lighting and countertops for a detailed look. “People are blown away,” he says. “They get an email from us to see a panoramic view, or they can even wear special goggles while standing in their home to look around the room and experience the remodel in 3-D.”

Professional designations set HBA members apart A designation from the National Association of Home Builders or the North Dakota Association of Builders says a lot about a builder, remodeler or building industry associate. Professional designations offer opportunities for Home Builders Association of F-M members to improve skills, advance their careers and be recognized for commitment to professional growth. See the facing page for a list of HBA members who have earned designations as of Jan. 17, 2017.

National Association of Home Builders designations www.nahb.org NAHB has the most targeted curriculum, accomplished teachers and widely respected education opportunities in the business. The following are brief descriptions of designations that HBA of F-M members have earned: • Certified Aging-In- Place Specialist (CAPS) - teaches technical, business management and customer service skills essential to competing in the aging-in- place market. • Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) - emphasizes business and project management skills. • Certified Graduate Remodeler - (CGR) emphasizes business management skills as related to a remodeling operation. • Certified Green Professional (CGP) - teaches techniques for incorporating green building principles into homes without driving up construction cost. • Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) - demonstrates high level of knowledge, experience and education in the LIHTC (low-income housing tax credit) industry. To earn these designations, members must take NAHB-approved courses from a set curriculum and keep up with continuing education.

North Dakota Professional Builder designation www.ndbuild.com North Dakota Professional Builders (NDPB) requirements: • Meet membership requirements of their local builders association. • Must have held a contractor’s license in the state of North Dakota for at least two years. • Comply with all appropriate North Dakota statutes concerning contractors. • Build in compliance with appropriate local, state and national building codes. • Adhere to the Code of Ethics of North Dakota Association of Builders. • Complete seven credit hours of continuing education annually.
