Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead invites you to our 55th annual Red River Valley Home & Garden Show: Come see us! Make some plans for warmer weather and your home or yard. Check out the landscaping and backyard displays to stretch your legs and enjoy the smell of flowers, mulch and greenery! At the show, Feb. 26-28, you can find many products and services needed to gear up for spring and summer, build a new home, or remodel an existing one. The most current products and trends in the building industry will be on display. Exhibits include everything from building and landscaping to decorating and heating/cooling. There are financial institutions, home product items, arts, crafts and more. In this age of the Internet, nothing beats the show’s face-to-face environment and social setting offering a one-stop shop! We are rolling out a new mobile app for this year’s event that will make navigating the show a breeze! Download it to your phone now to browse exhibitors, mark your favorites, see the workshop schedule and explore the Beer Walk and kids’ features. See pages 6-7 for the kids’ features. Beer Walk story appears on page 16. To read more, or visit the Home & Garden Show page at www.hbafm.com to find out how to download the app.

Show Welcomes ‘rock star’ line up for workshops

Experience local! This year’s Red River Valley Home & Garden Show is taking a fresh approach to its workshops by tapping into our own area’s talent addressing topics that we know you want to learn more about: Gardening, Cooking, DIY and Design. With that thought in mind, we interviewed our local celebrities in true rock band fashion so you can learn a little more about them as people, some of their quirks, and what you’ll take away from the show this year by attending their workshops. We’ve also asked them some fun questions about each others’ fields to truly test their well-roundedness! Here they are! Forum columnist and horticulturist Don Kinzler; Chef Eric Watson, Mosaic Foods/Mezzaluna/Rustica; Maria Bosak, Eco Chic Boutique; and Tom Spaeth, Accent Kitchen & Bath.

Tom Spaeth: Personally, when Eric Watson: I just appreciate any local organization that engages chefs or gives chefs an opportunity to engage with the public, even when its event is not specifically geared toward cooking.

I do workshops, I enjoy the question-and-answer part. If you can answer a question that somebody has been longing to get an answer to, that makes the whole thing for me.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESIGN TREND WE’RE CURRENTLY SEEING IN HOMES? Don Kinzler: I like the new neutral palette, you can bring trend toward large energythe seasons in, you can change efficient windows, because it your home quickly because you makes indoor gardening easy. are not stuck to one palette. You can change with accents and Eric Watson: When I first accessories, and you don’t have read that question, I thought to completely repaint. I like that what the heck do I know we are getting back to more about home design? But then neutral palettes. again, I cater in people’s homes all the time, so I must know something. From what I visually see when I go into homes nowadays is the trend towards making the kitchen more entertainment friendly. I like that.

Maria Bosak: I like neutrals; I like whites. So I am excited to get away from oak cabinets and wood. I’m sitting with a group of men, and the men are going to cringe, but I love to go into a home and paint all of the woodwork white. I think it’s easier to accessorize when you are dealing with a

Tom Spaeth: I’m going to go with Maria a little bit on the painting part. There is a lot of painting going on with the cabinetry, woodwork and all of that stuff. The other thing that I have seen a huge trend towards is the ceramic tile that looks like wood planking. We are using it, of course, on floors, but in showers, everywhere and it’s really a cool look. We’ve seen a lot of that going on.

WHAT IS ONE THING PEOPLE WILL TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR WORKSHOP THAT WILL INSTANTLY HELP THEM? Featured Workshops TELL ME THE ONE-MINUTE HIGHLIGHT VERSION OF YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU ENDED UP IN FARGO-MOORHEAD, DOING WHAT YOU DO NOW. Don Kinzler: I came to Fargo in the ‘70s for college to study horticulture because I always enjoyed gardening. I’m from Lisbon, N.D. I came here to NDSU and I never left. I worked with NDSU in horticulture, and then my wife and I owned a greenhouse in south Fargo for 20 years. Now I write for The Forum newspaper and Forum Communications as their garden columnist. Eric Watson: I am from Colorado and my wife is from this region. She decided to go to culinary school in Colorado; Fargo-Moorhead was never on my radar. I had really adventurous places in mind… before I moved here I had Miami and New Orleans on my radar. Fargo ended up being the destination because women tend to have that

effect on people. That’s how I ended up here approximately 11 or 12 years ago, and I honestly thought my career might be over by moving to Fargo. But, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are some other professional chefs here and a decent food scene. It actually ended up being the right time at the right place. Things work out for a reason. Maria Bosak: I came up here to go to school just like Don. I went to Minnesota State University Moorhead. I actually have a degree in social work. I worked with the police department for a while and then I actually started on my own in my 30s after a stint with a beautiful company for 12 years that taught me a lot of great stuff about business. I opened the store, Eco Chic, which started as a “baby, mom

and home” store. After about a year in business, we had more people asking us about the furniture itself than about what was on the furniture. They wanted to buy our display pieces as opposed to the product that was on them. We quickly started realizing that there was a demand for it. We started re-purposing and selling and painting furniture and it became an absolute love. Then we moved into the home décor and the workshop side of it, and it really just took off. So we kind of stumbled into our passion and it has been a great ride. Tom Spaeth: I grew up just northeast of here in Mahnomen, Minn., on a farm. Out of high school I went to UMC Crookston and then ended up at NDSU. After that, I started in my career in

construction, but I started out in the Twin Cities; I lived in St. Cloud, Minn., for ten years and then moved up to FargoMoorhead in 1995. So I have been around here for a touch over 20 years. I have been at Accent Kitchen & Bath for 16 years now. It started just as an advertisement in the paper: “We need a dispatcher.” I ended up partnering up with a great businessman and we have been doing business together for 12 years now already. We started out as a small maintenance company and have grown into a large design/remodel company. We also have our own showroom. It has been quite an evolution for me, but I’m glad to be where we are. I love FargoMoorhead.

Soups make the perfect one-pot meal or dinner complement anytime of the year. Don Kinzler, gardening columnist with The Forum, will describe trees, perennial and annual flowers that prefer shade. Growing tips will include ways to improve the soil, how to fertilize effectively, pitfalls to avoid and design methods to create a shade garden showplace. Plus, learn to beautify bare spots underneath evergreen trees and other trouble areas. THE GREAT TOMATO RACE Tomatoes have long held the number-one spot in home gardening. Even home owners without vegetable gardens find a flowerbed or spot by the house foundation for a tomato plant or two. And it’s all about getting the first big, ripe, juicy tomato of the season. It’s a race, and the earlier the better. There are definite, easy-to-do tips that can produce tomatoes earlier by two to three weeks or more. Hear from Don Kinzler, gardening columnist with The Forum, about the best varieties, fertilizers and disease control. Seed-starting techniques will help those who’d like to grow their own plants. TRIED & TRUE TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL LAWNS, LANDSCAPING AND HOME GARDENING How often should lawns be fertilized? Is it best to bag clippings while mowing? When is the best time to prune apple trees? Why didn’t the tulips bloom? Is there a way to cut down on weeding in vegetables? How can an older landscape be improved without an expensive redo? How can you tell if trees and shrubs are winter hardy for our region? Don Kinzler, gardening columnist with The Forum, offers tips for improved success with all things growing. There are no trendy flashpoints among these ideas: just time-honored gardening techniques for northern gardeners and home owners. SEE THE COMPLETE WORKSHOP SCHEDULE ON PAGE 19

And now, for some fun facts... Maria Bosak

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE TV DESIGNER AND WHY? Hands down I have to say my friend Joanna Gains, because we have gotten to know each other this past year and I love her style. Joanna’s my girl. I love what she is up to. IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPER POWER WHAT WOULD IT BE? Patience, I am terribly impatient. I’m the person in the grocery store when the person in front of you is taking too long to get their stuff done, I’m just like “ahhhhhh!”

WHAT IS THE LAST PHOTO YOU TOOK ON YOUR PHONE? I took a photo before I left home this morning; I took a photo of the snow. Our home now has trees around it, so every time it snows it looks beautiful, but every time you try to capture it, it doesn’t look the same on the phone. If it wasn’t the snow, it would have been my dog; we don’t have children, so it’s a picture of our dog every day. IF YOU COULD BE ANY TREE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY? I probably should be a maple because I’m kind of sappy. I couldn’t resist that! But it would probably be a bur oak, because they are well-adapted to the area. They are kind of slow and sluggish, but once they get going they are well-established and do well.

Don Kinzler

WHAT HABIT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BREAK? I have never seen a plant I didn’t like, and so I collect and buy accordingly. I probably should think about not collecting so many plants. YOU TAKE QUESTIONS FROM READERS IN THE FORUM… WHAT IS THE WILDEST QUESTION YOU’VE GOTTEN? WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON QUESTION YOU GET? Last summer, I got a question from a reader who had read on the internet about a new homemade mosquito repellant that was composed of Epsom salts, mouthwash and beer. If you sprayed this all over your yard on everything, it was supposed to repel mosquitoes. So the question was: “What effect will it have on my plants outdoors, the trees & shrubs?” Of course there is no way to know… so that was probably the wildest. I hesitated to have anyone spray that over everything. I suppose someone had tried it, but there is such a variety of outdoor plants, it’s hard to know the effects. The most common question is when to prune apple trees.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR AT YOUR HOUSE IF WE LOOKED INSIDE RIGHT NOW? Kombucha for sure; we are on a kombucha kick right now. We actually make it at home. And if you didn’t find kombucha you would find good beer, salsa and juice. At least those items. Editor’s note: Kombucha is a beverage produced by fermenting sweet tea with a culture of yeast and bacteria. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE, GO-TO DISH TO IMPRESS SOMEONE IMPORTANT? That’s a hard question to answer because it depends on who I am cooking for, what the season is, what my inspiration is and what ingredients I have. But, generically, anything lamb, simply because so many people swear they hate lamb and I take great pleasure in convincing them otherwise. It usually works out in my favor.

WOULD YOU RATHER BE REALLY, REALLY BIG, OR REALLY, REALLY SMALL AND WHY? I racked my brain over this and I even asked my kids, and they weren’t sure either. I don’t have a super witty answer, I guess I would say small, not because I want to go sneak around and spy on anybody. I love being out in front of an audience and doing this sort of thing, but I am also very much an introvert and I enjoy my down time. For me, being really, really small means I could easily hide and get my alone time. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? When I left home after my sophomore year of high school, I went to northern Texas and worked on a combining crew. That was my first real job. But I always worked for a lot of people for minimal wage, like two bucks an hour working for your uncle on the farm, stuff like that.

Tom Spaeth

WHAT SPECIFICALLY DO YOU FIND SATISFYING ABOUT THE REMODELING FIELD? A lot of things, but the thing I find the most satisfying is that it’s never the same. When you tear something apart, and you have homes from five years old to 100 years old, you never find anything the same. It’s unbelievable what you find behind walls. It’s unbelievable what people have done through the years that weren’t professional trades. WHERE WOULD YOU GO IN A TIME TRAVEL MACHINE AND WHY? I thought about this a lot. I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to go to the future to see what’s cookin’. But I also thought to myself that it would be fun to go back to what I always considered a simple time in America, like in the 50s. I enjoy the cool cars, the driveup cafes, the drive-in theaters, the races on the streets and the good music from that era. That’s what I think I would do. And then maybe bump into a few people that were in that era and you could maybe change a few things.

Designations

Professional designations set HBA members apart A designation from the National Association of Home Builders or the North Dakota Association of Builders says a lot about a builder, remodeler or building industry associate. Professional designations offer opportunities for Home Builders Association of F-M members to improve skills, advance their careers and be recognized for commitment to professional growth. See the facing page for a list of HBA members who have earned designations as of Jan. 29, 2016.

National Association of Home Builders designations www.nahb.org NAHB has the most targeted curriculum, accomplished teachers and widely respected education opportunities in the business. The following are brief descriptions of designations that HBA of F-M members have earned: • Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) - teaches technical, business management and customer service skills essential to competing in the aging-in-place market. • Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) - emphasizes business and project management skills. • Certified Graduate Remodeler - (CGR) emphasizes business management skills as related to a remodeling operation. • Certified Green Professional (CGP) - teaches techniques for incorporating green building principles into homes without driving up construction cost. • Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) - demonstrates high level of knowledge, experience and education in the LIHTC (low-income housing tax credit) industry. To earn these designations, members must take NAHB-approved courses from a set curriculum and keep up with continuing education.

North Dakota Professional Builder designation www.ndbuild.com North Dakota Professional Builders (NDPB) requirements: • Meet membership requirements of their local builders association. • Must have held a contractor’s license in the state of North Dakota for at least two years. • Comply with all appropriate North Dakota statutes concerning contractors. • Build in compliance with appropriate local, state and national building codes. • Adhere to the Code of Ethics of North Dakota Association of Builders. • Complete seven credit hours of continuing education annually.

NDAB makes its best efforts to determine a builder’s qualifications for certification as an NDPB. While the program recognizes the professionalism of a builder, NDAB does not make warranty or representations, express or implied, to home buyers or others. It has not inspected construction of any home and does not and cannot address the quality of a home.

Construction Trades Academy

open to area teens 15 YEARS AND OLDER, ENROLLMENT FEE ONLY $25, 3 COLLEGE CREDITS AVAILABLE

The Herdina Academy for Construction Trades will be weekdays June 6 - 17 at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead. The two-week session runs 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and a certified instructor supervises activities. The Academy is open to North Dakota and Minnesota high school students age 15 and older for just $25. Enrollment is limited! Students who successfully complete the Academy will earn three college credits from M State. The credits can be used for the plumbing, refrigeration and air conditioning, or mechanical CAD programs at M State.

2014 Academy graduate Garrett Goldader says, “I learned things that I never thought I’d know, and I got to learn more about things I already knew. Working with the contractors was fun because we got to talk to them about how they do things day-to-day at their job, and handle problems that come up, and they have a different experience than a classroom teacher might have.”

FIND OUT MORE BY calling (701) 232-5846, emailing info@hbafm.com, visiting www.hbcfm.com or visiting www.facebook.com/TradesAcademy

A $500 scholarship from the Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation will be awarded to an outstanding student who completes the Academy and plans to enroll in a construction-related field at M StateMoorhead or North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.

Refinement in Kitchen & Bath: 2016 Trends With information at our fingertips, everyone has become a designer almost overnight with his or her own Houzz or Pinterest boards. Many homeowners probably have found that designing and implementation are two separate things, and aren’t as easily (or cheaply) done as seen on DIY Network or HGTV. Home & Garden Show organizers sat down with Tim Liebl at Accent Kitchen & Bath to talk about this trend and find out what he sees as high points for this year. Liebl has been a kitchen and bath manager/ designer with Accent for five years.

LED Tape Light Revolution In 2015, we saw a burst in the use of LED tape light and experimentation of how to implement this new and simple concept. 2016 is going to be the year where we refine and accentuate our main design pieces by promoting proper use of it. The traditional location for the tape light is under cabinets, but I predict we will see a whole lot of toe-kick lighting and under-counter lighting at peninsula and island overhangs. Personally, I’m going to talk about LED tape with track lighting above shower units and behind bathroom mirrors with my customers.

Single-tier Islands Another design trend that we are starting to see is single-tier islands versus two-tier islands. In the past, when I discussed two-tier islands with customers, it was for two reasons, the aesthetic of a multi-dimensional island and the nostalgia of sitting on a taller stool. I believe that home owners are going to trend toward the single-tier island now because of sheer practicality. One reason for people choosing single-tier islands is that we are becoming more health conscious, and with health consciousness comes healthy cooking at home instead of going out to eat. This requires more prep space, use of a prep sink in the island (in addition to a main sink on the perimeter) and serving space for you and your beautiful taste-tester people. By the way, there still is the seating at the island with a stool allowing the nostalgia to remain intact!

Feature Designing

Another trend that I am starting to notice is feature designing or simplifying main work areas with simple and solid colors, allowing for a design feature of your choice to stand out like never before. An easy example of feature design would be making the one main wall in your shower stacked stone or nice mosaic tile, and having the rest of your tile in the shower and on the floor be complementary in color, but non-competing and simple in nature. Other areas where this could be done, that we don’t usually think about, are on the back panel of islands/peninsulas, bathroom ceilings - possibly with beams, baby! - and random walls in whatever room like a wood plank on one master bedroom wall.

Virtual Reality

There is a train coming in design and in your everyday life that you are slightly familiar with, virtual reality, not your Star Trek, holographic, talk-to-your-crew-from-another-planet-like-you-are-sitting-there virtual reality, but goggle-glasses-wearing virtual reality. Right now, as we speak, Accent has virtual-reality designs, and it’s easier and more economical than a person thinks. A easy-to-use and affordable virtual reality tool is Google’s “DODOcase,” cardboard virtual-reality glasses. They retail at about $25. Accent Kitchen & Bath uses these glasses to test out designs with their customers. A designer emails a link of a design to home owner, then the home owner opens link with smartphone and presses virtual-reality function. Once she puts her smartphone in the DODOcase, and brings up the glasses to view, she will likely fall over in amazement! The home owner is able to see the design in 3-D virtual reality in his or her own house and space. Liebl, along with Tom Spaeth and other Accent Kitchen & Bath team members, will offer a workshop each day of the Home & Garden Show titled “Kitchens and Baths: Trends, Ideas, and Journeys.” Read more on page 12.

SALES AND SERVICE

HBA celebrates 60th anniversary, visit booth for celebratory M&Ms What started in 1956 with 17 members has grown to nearly 820 member Builder and Associate companies and over 60 affiliates today. The Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead, our staff and all our members are proud to celebrate our 60th anniversary this year: visit booth 197 for celebratory M&Ms during the Home & Garden Show! Our core vision and values have not changed much from the goals of those first seventeen members: to give the home building industry one voice, address regulation impacting business, guide our profession’s direction, and to promote homeownership, keeping housing affordable for home buyers. While the Home Builder Association’s primary purpose is advocacy for its members, it also offers public events to showcase the industry. Here are some stats on those events: • The first Parade of Homes in 1960 featured 15 homes. Each had a princess that would compete to become the Home Builders Queen! To date, our largest Parade had 114 homes in 2007. • The first Home Show in 1961 featured 40-50 exhibitors and a homeowner’s clinic with giveaways. Today, our Red River Valley Home & Garden Show welcomes over 300 exhibitors at the Fargodome and offers workshops for consumers throughout the event. • At the turn of the century, the HBA began a Fall offering of its popular Parade of Homes event. The event had its most entries in 2007 with 68 homes and continues to gain popularity in the community. • Four years ago, the HBA began the Remodeled Home Tour to run in conjunction with its Fall Parade of Homes and offer a chance for our home renovation members to showcase their projects in existing homes. Since 1956, our membership has grown to be over 50 times its original size. We are looking forward to the next 60 years, continuing to build communities for the F-M metro area! Visit www.hbafm.com for more about the Home Builders Association, our members and services.
