HBA of F-M President’s Message HBA members discuss home building issues in Washington: PAC funds vital to advocacy efforts Carlita Dietz
June was filled with political activism: being your voice with local, state and national government is the reason this Association was founded, and remains the core reason why we exist. Our leaders took an active role in the June North Dakota Primary Election and hosted Candidate Forums for the Fargo and West Fargo city commission races. We look forward to continued work with re-elected Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker and City Commissioner Tim Mahoney. We also look forward to working with Commissioner-elect Dave Piepkorn as he rejoins the Fargo City Commission. West Fargo is sure to see continued growth and progress from re-elected Mayor Rich Mattern and City Commissioners Duane Hanson and Mark Wentz. Thank you to voters for supporting the West Fargo sales tax increase, which will provide funding for the infrastructure needs of the growing city. Several members traveled to Washington, D.C., last month as part of the National Association of Home Builders’ Spring Board of Directors Meeting. We met with U.S. Sens. Hoeven and Heitkamp (or their staff), carrying messages extremely important to your business: flood protection for the F-M area and the federal mortgage interest deduction, are two prominent examples. Read a full recap of these meetings on page 10. Several of us also took part in the North Dakota Association of Builders board of directors meeting and golf tournament at the end of June, discussing NDAB’s plans for the 2015 session, North Dakota’s November elections and ballot issues as well as administrative items and raising PAC funds. Look for a recap next month! PAC contributions are key to strong relationships with elected officials. If you haven’t already given to BUILDPAC this year, I encourage you to contribute. These funds allow your local and state HBAs to support candidates who are friendly to the housing industry. For those of you who have generously opened your pocketbooks, thank you! I encourage every member of our Association to do his or her part to support our PAC efforts. Your donation to PAC must be personal and noncorporate. Consider putting it on your personal credit card. BUILD-PAC can charge your card up to four installments over the year. We are trying to make contributing as painless as possible. Jay Dietz Construction, Inc.

What companies are you working with that could be great HBA members?
There are times when Membership & Marketing Coordinator Allison Weckman calls a current member for a reference on a new member application, and the current member tells her it never even occurred to him or her to promote HBA membership. Take a minute to think about those companies you do business with. If you find one that is not a member, and you wonder if he or she should be, call the HBA staff to make sure that company fits the membership guidelines. If it does, the HBA will gladly send an information packet out or contact the individual. Contact the office at (701) 232-5846 or info@hbafm.com for more information.

HBA leaders head to the nation’s capitol for Spring Board of Directors meeting
Last month, I traveled with several HBA members to take part in the National Association of Home Builders’ Spring Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C. Those who traveled to the meetings included: • Life Director Don Dabbert, Jr., Dabbert Custom Homes; • HBA President-Elect and National Director Clay Dietrich, Dietrich Terry Lipp Homes, Inc.; National Director Ferguson Bath, Kitchen • HBA President and National Director Carlita Dietz, Jay Dietz & Lighting Showroom Construction, Inc.; • North Dakota Association of Builders Immediate Past President and National Director Jason Eid, Eid-Co Buildings, Inc.; • Life Director John Gunkelman, Dakota Construction of Fargo, Inc.; • HBA Immediate Past President and National Director Darrick Guthmiller, Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc.; • HBA Secretary and Alternate National Director John Koerselman, Red River Drywall & Painting Services, Inc.; • Life Director and North Dakota Association of Builders Associate National Director Ken Krajsa, Bell State Bank & Trust; • National Director Dan Lindquist, Dan Lindquist Construction, Inc.; and • HBA Executive Vice President Bryce Johnson. This year’s event was held at the Marriot Wardman Hotel and was well attended by associations from across the country. The HBA’s leaders and NDAB were able to secure meetings at the Capitol with Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp and members of their staff. Members lobbied on behalf of the building industry, addressing issues that affect home building in the F-M area. Key points of discussion included: thanking the senators for their support in the passage of the Water Resources Development Act, giving authorization for The F-M Diversion, and discussing the next steps in acquiring funding for the project; the CrapoJohnson Finance Reform legislation that affects housing finance; the labor shortage in not only the state, but the F-M area; and the effects of President Obama’s new energy policies on affordable housing. The senators and their staff were very accommodating, and we appreciate the time they took out of their busy schedules to meet with us. Sen. Hoeven, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, reassured us that he would work hard to help secure funding for the F-M Diversion and encouraged us to keep supporting the project. Sen. Heitkamp spoke with members extensively about the Crapo-Johnson Housing Finance reform and her support of the legislation.

Public Issues Report of Area Affairs HBA supports housingfriendly candidates, West Fargo sales tax by Roz Leighton, Public Affairs Coordinator
Last month, North Dakotans voted in the primary election for local elected officials and your HBA of F-M took an active role in the election process by hosting Candidate Forums, researching issues and inviting presenters to discuss local measures and issues facing the area. We encouraged members to vote for housing. Your HBA supported four housing-friendly candidates who saw success. Congratulations to West Fargo Mayor Rich Mattern and City Commissioners Duane Hanson and Mark Wentz who were re-elected for another four years. In Fargo, voters elected City Commissioner Tim Mahoney to another four-year term. The HBA also congratulates Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker on his re-election, and Commissioner-elect Dave Piepkorn as he rejoins the City Commission. Both will
serve four years. The HBA looks forward to continued strong relationships with our local elected officials and working with them to meet the housing industry’s needs. The Association held a series of Candidate Forums to learn more about those running for office, and HBA members recommended support based on information gathered during these forums. Thank you to all members who participated and to the candidates who gave us a chance to learn more about them.
West Fargo sales tax increase
Your HBA recommended voting “yes” to a 1 percent sales tax increase in West Fargo, which passed June 10. The increase brings the sales tax from 1 to 2 percent and the total tax to 7.5 percent, equal to Fargo’s. The revenue from the increase will be solely used to meet infrastructure needs of the growing city. The city has identified about 60 projects it is targeting to complete over the next 20 years, totaling $124 million. The sales tax increase will go into effect 90 days after legal notices are given to retailers and state agencies.

News from the North Dakota Association of Builders Common Sense Success
Throughout 2014, North Dakota Association of Builders has been keeping tabs on key issues that could potentially affect the home building industry. We have been actively engaging experts and have already been in conversations with our three national delegates. In preparation for Ken Callahan NDAB President, the November ballot, please make Montana-Dakota sure you are taking time to become Utilities, Co. educated and familiar with the issues. Williston, N.D. Here is a little information on one of them that we feel is important. The Clean Water, Wildlife and Parks Amendment measure proposes to change the North Dakota constitution to commit 5 percent of North Dakota’s oil extraction tax to a new conservation fund. That’s in addition to more than $130 million the state of North Dakota currently provides for conservation and related efforts every biennium. This measure also mandates that at least 75 percent of this massive conservation fund be spent each year, whether or not there are legitimate conservation needs. At the end of the day supporting the clean water, wildlife amendment does not make sense! Opposing this measure is the North Dakotans for Common Sense Conservation Coalition, made up of more than 30 groups who promote responsible stewardship of North Dakota’s natural resources. To date, all six local home builders associations and NDAB have signed on to be a part of this group. It is important to note that although we oppose this measure, we do not oppose conservation. The members of North Dakotans for Common Sense Conservation support responsible, common-sense conservation that maintains and improves North Dakota’s lands, wildlife and natural resources, but are concerned about several aspects of this particular proposed measure: It creates a lack of flexibility regarding the use of state funds. It mandates $4.8 billion in conservation spending over the next 25 years. It does not provide clear details about how the money will be spent. It would be the first-ever funding measure enshrined in our constitution. As North Dakota continues to expand in business and population growth, there’s a real need to address the issues of access to the outdoors, habitat conservation and stewardship of our natural areas and lands. This need was addressed by the 2013 Legislative Assembly when a bipartisan coalition approved the Outdoor Heritage Fund. This $30 million Outdoor Heritage Fund is in addition to the $100 million the state of North Dakota spends every year on conservation and related projects. NDAB believes that while conservation is important, so are other needs in the state. At the end of the day a balanced approach to funding will be key as North Dakota continues to grow. We need to stick together and spread the word to support the North Dakotans for Common Sense Conservation Coalition!

Thank you to everyone who traveled with me over the last couple of months! Visiting each one of the six local association’s boards and general membership was quite the treat for me. North Dakota is made up of such outstanding and welcoming people and this tour reminded me just how lucky I Kim Schneider NDAB Executive am to get to work daily with so many Officer supportive and fun experts! Speaking of having fun, over 20 representatives from North Dakota traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Association of Home Builders Spring Board of Directors meetings in early June. Representatives from North Dakota attended various meetings including meeting with U.S. Sens. Hoeven and Heitkamp at the nation’s capitol. One highlight was our dinner reservation of 28 at Founding Farmers, a North Dakota Farmer’s Union-owned restaurant. I don’t think that place has ever heard so many laughs and bad jokes! Our fun didn’t end there; we met June 23-34 in Minot for our North Dakota Association of Builders board meeting and Birdie with the Builders golf tournament. We had over 80 golfers, including eight legislators and over 90 people for dinner. A big thank you to all of our amazing sponsors, golfers, volunteers and Vardon golf club for a fantastic day! Word is traveling fast and participating in NDAB events is a great opportunity for networking. Registration numbers keep climbing for our golf event and we are looking forward to a high turnout at our annual banquet in November in Grand Forks. If you are interested in joining us, please let me know or watch your emails for details to be released in the fall. NDAB, its board and all of the members are known to be hard workers. We work hard and we have fun, too. While we were in Minot golfing we also held our state board meeting. With over 30 board members in attendance we discussed the primary elections, committee work, coalition work, trainings, upcoming board meetings, sponsorships, Deed Tax Measure, PAC and bylaws. We also discussed the future of NDAB and our local associations. We have some big and exciting plans and we would like to invite others to be a part of it. Please contact your local association’s executive officer or board president to find out how to become more involved. We welcome new faces and ideas and want to share in our fun! If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, we still have opportunities as well. I hope everyone had an enjoyable 4th of July and that you are enjoying the summer months. Keep safe and hopefully we will see soon!

These guides will form the basis for continuing education courses and BKI will be start in Jan. 2015 The Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry has stated it plans to begin enforcing the new Minnesota Building Code in January of 2015. It has not yet released the final version of the code, so we don’t know exactly what will be included. However, based on what is known, the Builders Association of Minnesota is working to provide members with code guides with a planned release date near the end of August. BAM has contracted with Ed VonThoma of Building Knowledge Inc. and has assembled a group of statewide members to create and vet the following code guide documents: • Top 20 Code Changes in the Residential Building Code • Top 20 Code Changes in the Energy Code • Field Guide to Residential Code • Field Guide to Energy Code • Field Guide to Radon • Field Guide to Foundation Wall Support • Field Guide to Residential Fire Sprinklers These guides are a major benefit of membership and available ONLY to members. DLI issues the codes, but BAM is the organization that develops guides on how to implement the new codes. BAM will be providing members with access to each of these seven documents. The documents will be available on the BAM website

News from the National Association of Home Builders family home sales and sales expectations for the next six Builder confidence rises 4 months as “good,” “fair” or “poor.” The survey also asks builders to rate traffic of prospective buyers as “high to points in June June 16, 2014 - Builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes rose four points to reach a level of 49 on the National Association of Home Builders/ Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI) released today. It remains one point shy of the threshold for what is considered good building conditions. “After several months of little fluctuation, a four-point uptick in builder sentiment is a welcome sign and shows some renewed confidence in the industry,” said NAHB Chairman Kevin Kelly, a home builder and developer from Wilmington, Del. “However, builders are facing strong headwinds, including the limited availability of labor.” “Consumers are still hesitant, and are waiting for clear signals of full-fledged economic recovery before making a home purchase,” said NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “Builders are reacting accordingly, and are moving cautiously in adding inventory.” Derived from a monthly survey that NAHB has been conducting for 30 years, the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index gauges builder perceptions of current single-

very high,” “average” or “low to very low.” Scores for each component are then used to calculate a seasonally adjusted index where any number over 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as good than poor. All three index components posted gains in June. Most notably, the component gauging current sales conditions increased six points to 54. The component gauging sales expectations in the next six months rose three points to 59 and the component measuring buyer traffic increased by three to 36. Looking at the three-month moving averages for regional HMI scores, the South and Northeast each edged up one point to 49 and 34, respectively, while the West held steady at 47. The Midwest fell a single point to 46. Minn. DLI news: New codes, contractor registration program The Builders Association of Minnesota shared the following information this week from the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry:
Code adoption and effective date
DLI has published a request for comments for all chapters of the building code except 1305 (IBC), 1323 (Commercial Energy) and 7511 (Fire Code). The only public hearing requested and conducted was for the Residential Building Code. The department has not had hearings about other chapters of the code. It is DLI’s plan to publish the remaining chapters of the code for public review and comment early this summer. It plans to file several chapters of the state building code, including the Residential Building Code, with the Secretary of State on July 28. This will make those chapters effective 180 days later, on Jan. 24, 2015. DLI hopes to make the remaining codes also effective on this same date. As the date gets closer, leaders hope to provide greater certainty of that effective date.
Contractor registration program
DLI also sent information about the permanency of the Construction Contractor Registration program. It is no longer a pilot program. What does this mean? The expiration date of all current registrations has been automatically extended from June 30 to June 30, 2015. You do not have to do anything to keep your current registration active until June 30, 2015. DLI will send you information about the renewal process in spring 2015. If you need to change your current registration information with DLI, send an email explaining the change to: dli.register@state.mn.us. Contractors who hire you to perform work as an independent contractor will continue to use DLI’s online license lookup tool to verify your status as a “registered contractor.” What changed? Contractor Registration is a permanent program of DLI’s Construction Codes and Licensing Division. Contractors can be found to be misclassifying subcontrctors as independent contractors if the subcontractor does not meet the nine-factor test for a business. Where can I get help? • Visit DLI’s website: www.doli.state.mn.us • Call (651) 284-5074 • Email dli.register@state.mn.us

Meet your committee chair: Drew Likness, Chase Realty by Krista Mund, Communications Manager
Drew Likness recognizes that the HBA of F-M’s core goals and mission line up perfectly with his business: land development and selling new construction. Broker and owner of Chase Realty, Likness became involved with the Association about seven years ago to build relationships with builders and learn more about the industry. “Being active gives me a way to continue meeting new people: making those contacts is important to keep growing my business,” he says. “Also, the Association plays an Drew Likness important role in lobbying and being the voice of the building industry regarding governmental changes that can affect the way we all do business. It’s important to promote homeownership and keep the community growing because the industry is such an important economic engine.” Likness became chair of the New Member Development and Retention Committees last fall and makes an effort to support HBA events, sponsoring member meetings the past six years. “I wanted to be on a committee that was active and involved with the overall success of the HBA,” he says. “On the membership committees, you get to see the new Builder and Associate members joining, and keep a better pulse of what is happening with the industry.” He believes that membership is vital to any organization, and recruitment and retention are equally important. “Membership recruitment is year-round and I encourage members to ask some of the new subcontractors and business partners to join,” he says. In his spare time, Likness enjoys golf, being active with the El Zagel Shrine Temple, and spending time with family. Likness and his wife, Pam, live in Fargo with their children Abigail (age 15) and Ben (age seven).

HBA sets dates for lead renovator refresher courses
Next year marks the fiveyear anniversary since many local contractors received their Certified Renovator designation Larry Leadhead from the EPA Lead Enthusiast Environmental Protection Agency to comply with the Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. It is required for contractors disturbing six square feet or more in structures built in 1978 or earlier. Contractors must take a four-hour refresher course every five years to keep the certification active. Here are the HBA of F-M’s dates for next year (morning and afternoon four-hour sessions each day): • March 9 and 16 • May 13 and 15 • Sept. 18 The classes and exam must be completed and passed before your initial renovator date or you will have to re-take the full eight-hour Certified Renovator class. If you took the class through the HBA of F-M in 2010 and are unsure of your fiveyear anniversary date, contact Jenny Erickson at (701) 232-5846 or jenny@ hbafm.com to determine the most appropriate date to take your refresher. The HBA of F-M has also slated an eight-hour full certified renovator course for March 10.

Remodelers Council Focus Arvig Security & Surveillance by Krista Mund, Communications Manager
Established in 1950, Arvig has grown from a small, family-owned East Ottertail Telephone Company to one of the largest independent telecommunications providers in the nation. Like many family-owned businesses in Minnesota, an entrepreneurial spirit has driven the growth of the company. Tim Sullivan is security solutions account manager and has worked for Arvig Tim Sullivan the past seven years. He has over 20 years of experience in sales and management in the wireless communications industry and his education includes a bachelor’s degree in marketing and mass communications from Minnesota State University Moorhead. According to Sullivan, the company is a low-voltage contractor that specializes in security needs of business and residential customers. This includes new and existing home network cabling, intrusion security systems (burglar alarms), surveillance security cameras, home automation (lights, door locks, shades, ceiling fans and HVAC) and home access control. Arvig Security & Surveillance joined the HBA of F-M in 2006, and became part of the Remodelers Council last year. Sullivan said that involvement provides a way to make contacts in the industry. “Getting involved directly with the people who build and remodel homes in the community is the best way to help promote what Arvig can do for its customers,” he says. “Collaboration between other contractors and builders is a great way to network and build trust in the community. Arvig has always given back to the communities we serve.” The company’s roots are in Perham, Walker and Twin Valley, Minn. Today, Arvig’s service area has grown substantially to include many more Minnesota communities: It now provides telephone to nearly 66,000 customers, television to more than 24,000 customers and Internet to more than 36,300 customers, and has a service area that covers more than 9,000 square miles. Arvig currently employs more than 50 people in the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo area. Sullivan says it recently purchased a building at 5602 36th St. S. in Fargo in the Frontier addition. This building will house a data communications security division as well as Smart Search advertising, Time Communications (call center) and business phone systems divisions. Remodelers Council yearly dues are $70. If you are interested in joining, contact the HBA of F-M at (701) 2325846 or info@hbafm.com.

The National Association of Home Builders supports Student Chapters throughout the country. The chapters are made up of students pursuing degrees within the construction industry. The mission statement is: the NAHB Student Chapters program is dedicated to enriching the educational experience of students by offering them firsthand exposure to the real world of the building industry through NAHB membership, educational programming and networking opportunities. National dues are only $5 which provide many benefits, including: • Scholarships through the National Housing Endowment and Home Builders Care of FargoMoorhead Foundation. • International Builders Show registration fee of only $30. • Member discounts for NAHB Education and BuilderBooks.com. • Access to members-only content on nahb.org and NAHB staff. • Ability to attend HBA of F-M events at student rates. • Opportunity to work at HBA of F-M events like the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show to earn funds for their Student Chapter. There is a chapter at Minnesota State Community and Technical College, Minnesota State University-Moorhead, North Dakota State College of Science and North Dakota State University. With two chapters in two-year programs and two in four-year programs, we are fortunate to have a wide variety of students in different programs. Student Chapters are an important aspect of the Home Builders Care and HBA of F-M workforce development plan. We will be strengthening our relationships with our Student Chapters. If you attended any of these schools, would like to hire from these schools or just support the programs, please contact Jenny Erickson at (701) 232-5846 or jenny@hbafm.com

What is your company’s focus?
What is your company’s focus?
“At Thomsen Homes, we are dedicated to offering our customers an affordable, high-quality, newconstruction home in the F-M area.”
What is the latest trend in your business/industry?
“Currently, we are working on a project called The House That Likes Built. It is an interactive project Chris Thomsen involving Facebook and the F-M area. Every Monday, we post a collection of design options on our Facebook page for the house. People who like our page can vote on their favorite selection by liking and sharing the photo of their choice. The option with the most votes by noon that Friday is the winner and will be included in the house. “The project has been running since February, starting with voting on the development lot, and will end in September. It can be viewed on the 2014 Fall Parade of Homes. “We are very excited about this project and think it has been a great way to get the community involved through social media, as well as showcase the many selection options that we have to offer. The House That Likes Built is definitely the first of its kind in the Fargo-Moorhead area!” Thomsen Homes continued on page 33
“Terry Welle Construction, Inc., focuses on building multi-family residential construction.”
What is the latest trend in your business/industry?
“The latest trend in multi-family construction is the significant increase in demand for amenity upgrades and highend finishes. We are also seeing people Terry Welle that previously owned single-family homes wanting to move into high-end rental properties. These people are predominately ‘empty nesters.’”
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the industry today and how are you dealing with it?
“The increase in demand for high-end finishes and upgraded amenities has made it challenging to contain cost on the project to make sure that rent prices are competitive in our market. Our booming housing market has also put pressure on builders and subcontractors to get projects done on time with challenges in sourcing enough skilled labor and materials. The labor force isn’t currently large enough to supply the demand for housing. In order to offset this, I now schedule subcontractors much further in advance to ensure that I can meet all deadlines.”

HBA of F-M Associate Member Feature labor. Kelly says Labor Masters’ approach to day labor Labor Masters differentiates them from competitors. Company’s approach to temp labor results in better workers by Chelsea Smith, Communications & Office Coordinator
Labor Masters opened in January, but this new company has years of experience behind its doors. Nancy Kelly founded Labor Masters after 17 years of working in the employment industry. She has a bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University and previously worked for Labor Ready, Labor Now, Command Labor and Heartland Labor before starting her own business. Nancy Kelly Kelly works alongside her mother Marilyn Beaton and Chief Financial Officer Vickie Hendrickson. Hendrickson has over 20 years experience in finance, dealing specifically with the construction industry. Beaton helps take applications and keeps the business organized. “We have a beautiful, spacious lobby with great amenities for our temporary employees,” she says. “We feel that happy and appreciated temps will be better workers out in the field.” In this industry, the number of employers using temporary services has never been greater. This allows job seekers the opportunity to try a wide variety of employers. Kelly enjoys both assisting her customers in finding workers to help them finish projects, and finding jobs for people to aid in their success. She believes the extremely low unemployment rate and reaching potential workers in this social media age are two of her industry’s biggest challenges. Labor Masters stays active on Facebook, Craigslist and the radio to get the word out. For others starting out in the industry, Kelly urges them to “have fun, laugh and enjoy the ups and downs. It’s an extremely rewarding career and things are bound to go wrong, but handling it with honor and a smile will make all the difference.” Labor Masters is across from Cashwise, 1404 33rd St SW #C in Fargo and the phone number is (701) 566-8755. In the future, Kelly hopes to offer Labor Masters as a franchise opportunity for women entrepreneurs, but for now they are “changing the way you look at day labor, one employee at a time.”

Remodeled Home Tour entries due July 23
The 3rd Annual Remodeled Home Tour is Sept. 13-14 and entries are due July 23. The Tour is looking for a variety of remodel projects in the FargoMoorhead area. If you are an HBA member and have a great project that has been completed within the last two years, this is the perfect event to showcase your work. This Tour provides ten times the amount of promotion for your company than you could accomplish on your own through ads on multiple radio stations, print advertising in both magazines and newspapers, mentions on applicable Fall Parade television commercials, the HBA of F-M website and Facebook page, for only $600. Plus, each entry receives a half-page in the event magazine to showcase the project and company. This all adds up to be just over $6,000 in promotional costs that you can take advantage of by being part of the Tour. There is no reason you shouldn’t take advantage of what your HBA can do to help your company promote what it does best! The foundation, created in 1993 by the Home Builders Association of FargoMoorhead, is a local 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization. It was established with funds donated by HBA members, fundraising events and the HBA itself. The purpose for its creation was to provide an outlet for the builder, remodeler, and companies related to the building industry to show the community that there is more to the building industry than demolition, construction, and remodeling. The HBA of F-M handles the administrative duties for the foundation at no charge. Any contribution designated to the foundation goes directly to the foundation and its charitable work.
June was a very busy month for Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation. Our Habitat build officially kicked off June 3. Armed services veteran, Sonia Greer, and her daughter, Madison, are so excited to have a home of their own. Sonia was already close to meeting her 250 “sweat equity” hours at the beginning of the project. Thank you to all of the HBA of F-M members who have stepped up to donate labor and materials or made a monetary donation. See a full list of donors on page 8. We have already made the first-ever Veteran Build in FargoMoorhead area a success.
Herdina Academy graduates 17 students
The Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades also wrapped up in June and was a great success. We saw 17 students graduate from the program. Some even had jobs before the end of the Academy. Thank you for all who supported it. See the recap and a full list of supporters on page 30-31.
HBC plans career fair involvement for workforce development
Workforce development is an important focus of the new Home Builders Care strategic plan. One of the first steps is to keep track of upcoming career fairs. Please contact Jenny Erickson with any of your company’s job openings; we want to promote those opportunities. Home Builders Care and HBA of F-M are partnering with Fargo Public Schools and the Fargo building officials to host a student event in conjunction with the North Dakota Building Officials Association meeting in September. We will hold a career fair the afternoon of Sept. 11. We would like to have a wide representation of all the trades at this career fair. Please contact Jenny Erickson if you are interested in participating. We will send detailed information this summer. Home Builders Care and HBA of F-M are trying to work closely with Minnesota State Community and Technical College and North Dakota State College of Science to promote their construction-related programs. We would like to provide logos of member companies who support the programs at these schools to use on M State’s and NDSCS’s letterhead. If you attended either of these schools, would like to hire from them, or just want to support the programs, please contact Jenny Erickson at (701) 232-5846 or jenny@hbafm. com
Support your Foundation
HBA of F-M members have many ways to support Home Builders Care. The HBC Board challenges you to find at least one way that works for you to give back to your Foundation: • Monetary donations are always appreciated and we have numerous recognition programs (see the facing page for levels). The Triple Player was set up to recognize those HBA members who support the HBA through membership dues, invest at least $365 in BUILD-PAC and donate at least $365 to Home Builders Care. • Use Goodsearch and Goodshop when searching and shopping online. Make sure you type in Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation as the group you support. Goodshop also offers discounts and coupons so you can get a little something for yourself while giving back. • Take your aluminum, magazines and paper recycling to Minnkota Recycling and indicate that you want the proceeds to go to Home Builders Care. • Host us at any public or networking event you organize. We have found these events are great for spreading awareness about Home Builders Care while raising some money.

HBC hopes to become self-sustaining while also increasing its impact on the industry and community. • Triple Players: HBA recognition program that donors can join when they have, in addition to paying HBA membership dues, invested in BUILDPAC as a dollar-a-day contributor and made a donation to HBC for at least $365. • Trades for Grades donors: Allows donors to name scholarships and designate schools to which the funds must be given. • Builders Club: Exclusive group of donors who pledge at least $500 per year for five years or a total of $2,500+. • Bronze donors: $1-$499.99 • Silver donors: $500-$1,999.99 • Gold donors: $2,000 plus • Consider making your donation today and supporting HBC’s efforts in 2014. The 2014 Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades was a great success. This academy saw 17 students graduate, many of whom were 18 years old and looking for a summer job. Contractors working with the students were pleased to have hands-on time with the students. One student was hired the first Monday of the Academy! The Herdina Academy is a great place for contractors to meet students interested in the industry and test out their skills and work ethic. Students started the two-week course with concrete prep, which many loved. They worked with contractors to pour a new concrete slab for dumpsters. The group also framed sheds from the ground up, wrapped them with Tyvek and installed siding, shingles, doors and windows. During the course, students also worked with steel studs, building small pods, and installed flooring within the pods. Minnesota State Community and Technical College’s plumbing and electrical labs were opened to students to learn about those trades. The Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades is one of the foremost ways the HBA of F-M and Home Builders Care Foundation support workforce development. We are bringing students to the industry and helping them determine which sector they are most interested in. The Academy also helps contractors hire people who are interested in the industry. Mark your calendars for the 2015 Academy, June 1-12!

Increasing momentum, reduced headwinds
Despite GDP growth stalling in quarter one due to the polar vortex, slower inventory accumulation and mildly lower exports, the economic recovery remains intact. The anemic performance of the U.S. economy from January through March was aberrant, and the incoming employment, manufacturing and consumer spending data Elliot all point to an economic pickup. GDP growth the rest of Eisenberg, the year should average 3 percent, with growth in quarter Ph.D., two closer to 3.25 percent as the economy rebounds from Graphsand the harsh winter. In addition, reduced fiscal drag from Laughs, LLC Washington, D.C., increased hiring and spending by state and local governments, and increased corporate spending on plant and equipment suggest we are finally entering a period of faster growth. That said, economically all is not well. Wage growth remains anemic and while the unemployment rate is 6.3 percent, down from 10 percent, the fall is largely due to a decline in the labor-force participation rate. The ranks of the long-term unemployed remain elevated, along with the number of those working part-time because they can’t find full time work. Add to that, average overtime hours that are remarkably high, and termination rates that are very low, and what you have are employers very reluctant to hire. This situation cannot persist, and of late job creation numbers have been on the upswing. Therefore, net job creation will rise from 200,000 per month, where it has been for the past year, to 220,000 or 225,000 by year end and unemployment will probably fall to 6.1 percent. I expect wage growth to start picking up steam in 2015. The biggest drag on the economy is housing. After a promising first half of 2013, the housing market is, at best, flat. While rising interest rates and home prices, a lack of inventory and lots, shortages of materials and labor, and a lack of credit and first-time buyers play a part, weak household formation is the main culprit. After averaging over 1.2 million in the years prior to the Great Recession, household formations have been averaging 500,000 since the end of the recession. The good news: Household formation will rise now that all eight million jobs lost during the recession have been finally made up. We are no longer making up lost ground. Because of this, new single-family construction activity in 2014 will reach 700,000, with multi-family adding 350,000, while existing home sales should be down slightly from last year. As for inflation, it’s benign. No matter how measured, there is no inflation to speak of in the U.S. Commodity prices will remain well-behaved given weak demand due to economic slowing in China and weak growth in Europe and the developing nations. Absent some sort of geopolitical crisis, energy prices will remain where they are thanks to record U.S. oil production. As a result, expect tapering to end in November and for the Federal Reserve to begin raising shortterm interest rates by mid-2015. However, long-term rates have bottomed and ten-year treasuries will end the year at about 3 percent as the economy steadily strengthens. In short, the economy is improving and quarter one was a speed bump. Long term rates will rise, short-term rates will remain unchanged, and household spending will limp into 2015, with prices rising slightly. Most critically, household formation will strengthen and corporate, state and local government spending will rise. Lastly, the likelihood of a recession during the next six months is virtually zero. NAWIC #256 Corner: STEM and Construction by Amy Berg, NAWIC Chapter Member
What is STEM? And how does it relate to the construction industry? STEM – Science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Learning in these four curriculums is essential for all of our primary and secondary students regardless of their future career which includes the construction industry. David DeMuth, Jr., executive director of the Great Plains STEM Education Center and professor at Valley City State University, will be the featured speaker at the Fargo-Moorhead #246 August meeting. Joining him will be Ryan Aasheim also of the North Dakota STEM Network. Some of the items to be discussed are: • the percentage of women in the various construction industries/activities in North Dakota and Minnesota; • salary comparisons between women and men in the industry; and • educational attainment necessary or desired for construction and/or construction-related fields. Please join us Aug. 14 at the Holiday Inn. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. and program at 6:30 p.m. The monthly membership meeting will immediately follow the program. On Sept. 11, we will host our 14th Annual Golf Tournament at Rose Creek Golf Course. For more details about our upcoming programs go to: www. nawicfm246.org.
