HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF FARGO-MOORHEAD
WELCOME
JOHN GUNKELMAN, DAKOTA CONSTRUCTION OF FARGO, INC.
Coming Together With A Common Goal
The HBA of F-M has an active base of volunteers that never falters, but we welcome everyone. We are the Home Builders Association, and we especially need Builder members to engage, provide input and help lead this industry. I have been around a long time, and I’m excited about the new and younger faces I see coming to events, committee and board meetings. You and your business will benefit from involvement. Take it from me! Joining the HBA of F-M in 1992, the two things that have always driven me are the education opportunities provided through the Association and the networking. My membership fulfills both objectives. Serving on the Education Committee for years has been one way to assist the Association in providing input on what Builder members and Associates might be looking for in continuing education, codes, building techniques, etc. Through networking and the development of friendships, any problem that the building industry, the Association or an individual may face can be solved. Issues at the local, state and national level that I have been involved with have come to resolution by individuals coming together with a common goal. Since my year as president is drawing to a close, I’m also reflecting at everything we’ve done the past eight months and looking at the priorities we set. The common theme seems to be “moving ahead!” HBA President’s Message Continued on Page 32

Rebuilding Together Recognizes HBA CEO
by Krista Mund, Executive Vice President HBA CEO Bryce Johnson received Rebuilding Together Fargo-Moorhead Area’s Denny Walaker Community Leadership Award in October. Johnson’s message was one of gratitude for working in an industry so willing to give back by rebuilding lives and revitalizing communities. She says, “It’s such an honor and humbling to receive recognition in memory of Mayor Dennis Walaker. He was a larger-than-life individual, both in personality and endeavors, and had a wonderful kind heart. None of what we achieve is done alone, ever. I’m blessed to play a small role in what our organizations do, and blessed to be surrounded by God and angels, a loving family, as well as extraordinary, smart and giving individuals that include an amazing, hardworking, passionate team of women at the HBA.” The award was part of Rebuilding Together’s “friend raiser”, the [Re] Builder Boil, where supporters enjoyed a seafood boil and live music. Last year, the FM Area Foundation created the Walaker Family Memorial Fund to honor the lives of Dennis and Mary Walaker. Johnson says, “I’m proud for our members of the HBA, the Home Builders Care Foundation and our team. Thank you to the Dennis and Mary Walaker family, Rebuilding Together, their staff and volunteers for a special and fun night!” Rebuilding Together serves hundreds of low income families in need of home repair with an emphasis on helping seniors, veterans and people living with disabilities. Its goal is to help homeowners stay safe and healthy in their home by completing 30-50 projects each year.

NORTH DAKOTA ASSOCIATION OF BUILDERS
STATE ADVOCACY UPDATE KIM SCHNEIDER, NORTH DAKOTA ASSOCIATION OF BUILDERS CEO
The mission of the North Dakota Association of Builders is to represent the professional building industry through legislation, information and education. We do this proudly through a variety of ways. One of the strongest components of our mission is advocacy work at the local, state and national levels. Through our advocacy work, we are providing a voice, a position and being engaged in both legislative and regulatory governmental action. We cannot be successful without you. Your voice and the power you hold with your personal experiences, resources and the strength you put behind the lobbying efforts are monumental. When it comes to election time, your vote matters. Check Out Your Recent Impact! When it comes to calls to action, your voice matters. Recently, National Association of Home Builders asked for your voice in reaching out to U.S. Sen. John Hoeven on an energy code bill. The Senator heard your concerns and contacted NDAB to further the conversation and discuss how we can continue to work together on the legislation and possible amendments. The Senator heard you and took your concerns seriously. Your voice matters. To those who took a couple of minutes to click through the call to action, we say “thank you.” For those of you who didn’t, I ask that you reconsider in the future to follow through. NAHB does a great job of making the process simple and just a couple of clicks that could change future legislation that impacts the homebuilding industry at the national, state and local levels. In October we celebrated Careers in Construction month and one of the highlights was the proclamation we received from N.D. Gov. Doug Burgum. In his proclamation, it stated: NDAB Advocacy Continued on Page 32

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HOME BUILDERS
NATIONAL UPDATE
Federal Code Mandates Costly And The Wrong Approach to Boost Energy Efficiency Oct. 17, 2019
The National Association of Home Builders today urged Congress to oppose any federal mandates that require the adoption of more stringent building codes because it would harm housing affordability, prevent healthy competition in the marketplace and may not achieve the intended results. Testifying on behalf of NAHB before the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, Jimmy Rutland, a home builder and developer from Montgomery, Ala., said that maintaining housing affordability must be the cornerstone to any efforts to create cleaner and stronger homes. “Any efforts to improve or increase the efficiency or resiliency of the U.S. housing stock should focus on cost-effective, market-driven solutions,” said Rutland. New homes built to modern codes are efficient, safe and resilient, which makes increasing code stringency unnecessary, Rutland told lawmakers. “Similarly, because the codes are nearing a point of diminishing returns in terms of the cost-benefit ratio, additional updates may not be cost effective.” As policymakers seek to improve efficiency and mitigate the effects of future natural disasters, they need to create opportunities and incentives to facilitate upgrades and improvements to the older homes, structures and infrastructure that are less resilient to natural disasters. A full 130 million homes out of the nation’s housing stock of 137 million were built before 2010, and therefore, were not subject to the new building codes now in effect. “Since these homes also represent the biggest energy users and are the least resilient, programs and policies that focus on the existing housing stock would reap the most benefits,” said Rutland.
He also stressed the following points to lawmakers:
• State and local governments must retain authority over land use and their code adoption processes so they can continue to direct community development and implement the codes that best fit their jurisdictions. • Climate change mitigation programs that recognize and promote voluntary-above code compliance have a proven track record and demonstrate that mandates are not necessary.
• Incentives play an important role in providing home owners a cost-effective way to invest in energy efficiency and resiliency. Mandates, which fail to consider the needs or desires of consumers, lack the flexibility needed for realistic, widespread application, and add unnecessary costs to home construction and retrofits, are an unwise approach to improving efficiency and home performance.

Members Collaborate To End Workforce Shortage
by Bryce Johnson, HBA of F-M CEO and Home Builders Care Foundation Administrator HBA of F-M and Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation have been building relationships for years with school superintendents from our region on both sides of the river to develop a region-wide Career Workforce Academy. Between the two organizations, we have pledged $1 million toward the construction and development of a facility in Cass County. As discussions have progressed, the North Dakota schools have had time to review their own growth plans and consider future programs in their districts. While local media reports regarding Cass County’s Career Workforce Academy have made the local school districts’ support seem questionable at times, all superintendents are in favor of the facility. They value the opportunity it brings for students to have more opportunities for career discovery.

Plains Builder November 2019
WHAT WE HAVE DONE
Home Builders Care Foundation and HBA have worked with local schools for years to provide opportunities for students to learn more about the trades: • Health, Tech & Trades Career Expo - a one-day event allowing ninth graders to experience hands-on activities related to construction, technology and health science careers. • Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades - a twoweek construction camp that allows students 15 years and up to work with the professionals and try first-hand all there is about construction.
• Seeds For Hope - brings kindergarten through fifth grade students to a local college campus in the summer to experience many different facets of careers in the trades.
We also facilitate classroom visits, mentorship opportunities, worksite tours and have developed four short, impactful videos depicting the trades in a favorable light.
We do this because we need to help educate students, teachers, parents and our community that careers in the trades are rewarding and lucrative and banish the stigma that goes behind working with your hands.
WHERE WE ARE AT
In our support of both the Cass County Academy and one slated for Moorhead we have continued developing the relationships with the superintendents to hear what their challenges are and to find out how we can help. These relationships are important to us as the core values of the Home Builders Care Foundation is empowering students, workforce development and community. As I mentioned above, we have pledged to raise $1 million to support the Career Workforce Academy on the North Dakota side of the river. So far, we have raised $539,000 to assist this bricks-and-mortar campaign. Members Collaborate To End Workforce Shortage continued on page 25 Plains Builder November 2019

MARKETING
2020 Home & Garden Unleashes New Features by Allison Weckman, Senior Events & Marketing Coordinator The 2020 Red River Valley Home & Garden Show is unveiling fresh, new features designed to mix things up a bit, provide a welcoming atmosphere and bring customers to you.
When an event has been around for almost 60 years like the Red River Valley Home & Garden Show, it’s important to change things up frequently so consumers have something new and exciting to look forward to!
KID’S CORNER
A Kid’s Corner in the southwest corner of the field level will bring kids and their parents, down to where the action is! This area will include games, coloring and Legos for creations of all sorts.
BEER GARDEN
A Beer Garden in the southeast corner along with lawn games and a sitting area will provide a space for customers to kick back and relax as it can get tiring walking through all 110,000-sq. ft. of exhibit space!
Jamie Stenseth, Home & Garden Show Committee Chair says, “The show has seen great success with mini events like the Lego Homebuilding Competition, Treasure Hunt and Beer Walk, but these reinventions will help bring customers down to where the action is and provide some respite from a day walking around the show. The stage will remain in the northwest corner of the field level and provide those elements of summer we all yearn for: backyards and grilling. Don Kinzler, gardening columnist in The Forum, will present workshops on a variety of gardening topics. North Dakota State University BBQ Bootcamp will host sessions on backyard grilling systems (gas, charcoal, pellet grills and home smokers) along with information on spices, rubs, marinades and sauces.” Cass County Electric Cooperative will again sponsor free parking on Friday to launch the weekend. Admission will be a lower, flat rate of $7 all weekend, and children age 18 and under are free. “Rather than offering coupons, advance ticket prices and two-for-one admission on Sundays, we are going to a lower admission price,” Stenseth says. “That means families can still get in the door for under $20, including parking fees Saturday and Sunday.” The Home & Garden Show Committee is always looking for new and innovative ideas. Contact Allison Weckman at allisonw@hbafm.com or (701) 232-5846. If you exhibit at the show, consider joining the committee. It meets the fourth Thursday of the month. Industry Talent Fascinates Parade of Homes Fans Contractors Build To Impress And Connect
by Lacie Johnson, Communications Intern The Fall Parade of Homes has brought together builders and consumers within the community for nearly 20 years now. It gives consumers the chance to explore ideas and trends to update their current home, visualize the future and satisfy their curiosity. Whether they are on their way to building, remodeling, or buying a home, people come from all over to enjoy everything the Parade of Homes offers. Not only is it beneficial for consumers, but builders as well. Members can showcase their work in the Parade to connect with consumers or business-to-business. The Remodeled Home Tour was added eight years ago. It offers a chance for contractors and members to enter existing homes in a showcase renovations ranging from full-home updates to kitchens, baths and more.
REACHING YOUR AUDIENCE
During this year’s event, there were six different mediums used to advertise the Fall Parade of Homes and Remodeled Home Tour with over 300,000 people being reached just through digital advertising.
GIVING BACK
Each year, HBA members volunteer new homes priced $750,000 and higher or remodeling projects with a value of at least $200,000 to be featured homes in a fundraising effort to support Homes Builders Care of F-M Foundation. This year, one newly constructed Parade home and four remodeling projects raised over $4,500 for Home Builders Care Foundation.
LOOKING FORWARD
The 2020 Spring Parade of Homes will be the first three weekends in May. Plan your projects now so you’ll have an entry for our industry’s premier event to welcome spring and the building season. Watch for entry applications in January with the deadline to enter a home in late February or early March.
“We first started going when I was planning a kitchen remodel and we’ve kept coming back every year because we love seeing the new trends in materials, paint colors, and finishes.” Roberta Lemnus 15-Year Parade Attendee 20
Plains Builder November 2019
“When we had our first Parade of Homes entry in 2015 is when we noticed our business starting to flourish.” Melanie Anderson Benjamin Custom Homes Roberta Lemnus lives in Valley City and has been coming to the Parade for over a decade: “I’ve been going to the Parade of Homes for over 15 years. My sister and I have made it a bi-annual tradition. We first started going when I was planning a kitchen remodel and we’ve kept coming back every year because we love seeing the new trends in materials, paint colors, and finishes. “It’s also fun to see new neighborhoods in the Fargo area that are being developed by talented builders and designers. We especially love touring the houses that are custom built. The unique designs people create for their homes are so fascinating and inspiring. I’m continuously amazed by the talent of the trades in our area.” Melanie Anderson, finishing product designer at Benjamin Custom Homes, refers to the Parade as the perfect matchmaker: “When we had our first Parade of Homes entry in 2015 is when we noticed our business starting to flourish. We became introduced to customers who were able to see our building
style first-hand. Pictures are fantastic, but to be able to touch the quality in addition to seeing the home really makes an impact and impression people don’t forget. A large percentage of our builds are people who have toured our Parade homes and reappear months later wanting us to build their dream home. “A perfect example of this occurrence was our fall parade home this year. In Spring 2018 we had our first Featured Home which brought in a young couple who fell in love with our homes. Now, this fall they graciously offered to use their own home as a feature which has been quite the honor. It’s so neat to see the process come full circle like it has with this family. “We had 2 great weekends with the Parade of Homes this fall at our featured home. Not only did we have the opportunity to support Home Builders Care but were able to show off a piece of our artwork that our team has put together over the past year with these clients. They were really a joy to work with and I feel like the Parade of Homes brought us together as a perfect match.”

Members Collaborate To End Workforce Shortage continued from page 17 In Moorhead, the school district has a referendum vote Nov. 5 which includes funding for its own academy to be housed at the former Sam’s Club. HBA and Home Builders Care are supportive of this effort, too, and are helping with the Vote Yes campaign.
WHERE WE ARE GOING
These two academies will not just improve our future workforce and provide students with career choice readiness, they will provide growth for our communities, business development and keeping students close to home to replenish our industries. The HBA and Home Builders Care will continue working with our local school districts and technical schools to develop these academies.

Local Multiple Listings Service Adds ‘Green’ Fields by Larry Mayer, Solution Design Inc. Soon, the Fargo-Moorhead homebuilding and home-selling industries will be able to more effectively build, market and profit from performance-built homes constructed to national standards such as Energy Star, LEED and Indoor Air Plus.
Currently, the local Multiple Listings Service lacks “green” fields to share information with buyers about energy-saving equipment, energy ratings or Energy Star certifications which can affect the value of a home. Larry Mayer, Solution Design, Inc., hopes these fields will become live in the system by Jan. 1 in our market. Everyone involved in the homebuilding and selling process will benefit from learning about the definitions to profit from these in-demand homes and communicate their features through the MLS. Involving the home buyer, builder, Realtor, lender and appraiser, the process is like a relay race. The size and feature requirements of the new home are:
26
Plains Builder November 2019
1. First entered into a pre-green addendum and final green addendum that 2. Secondly are used in the pre-appraisal and pre-loan underwriting reports that go into the loan file and, 3. Finally, populate the MLS green fields for future comparables when property is sold. Join the HBA of F-M in learning about building high-performance homes and the entire process of utilizing the MLS green fields Jan. 28 during continuing education classes for building contractors. Visit www.hbafm.com. Click Events, and then Calendar.
This MLS change was achieved through an effort of Solution Design Inc., HBA of F-M, Fargo-Moorhead Area Association of Realtors and the North Dakota Appraisal Association. Mayer is an energy engineer and has worked the past four years to bring awareness to the building and real estate community. He has secured financial support for educational classes from Cass County Electric Cooperative, Minnkota Power Cooperative, North Dakota Department of Commerce and Xcel Energy. He has also worked with the HBA of F-M and FMAAR to share information with their members.

Connecting For A Purpose by Chelsea Diederich, Communications Coordinator I’m here to talk about the big “A” word. Advocacy. In today’s political climate it’s quick for your mind to automatically snowball. But what if I told you that politics can sometimes be about purpose. At the HBA of F-M we advocate for our industry, which means we work with political representatives from both sides of the aisle to create and accomplish goals that create a healthy building industry. So maybe you have read or heard a bit about advocacy. Hopefully you have voted in a local, state or federal election and maybe you even follow political efforts that are relevant to you. All that being said, what’s the next step in getting involved in the advocacy arena? The only thing you need to have is a passion for your industry. Legislators want to hear from you. The most common reasons given from members not wanting to engage in advocacy-related events is the feeling of lack of knowledge. If this is what you think, it’s far from the truth!
28
Plains Builder November 2019
Why is that? Because you are the expert! You work day in and day out in our industry, whether it’s financing new construction or remodels, building or any trade partner in between. It’s as easy as talking to someone about what you do on a daily basis. Every year we host a legislative social as a chance for our members to connect with legislators from across the F-M metro. New this year: We are focusing our efforts to engage our FLEX group in advocacy efforts. FLEX is a new group at the HBA of F-M that stands for Future Leaders & Entrepreneurs Exchange. If you are an emerging leader, this event is the perfect opportunity for you to dip your toe into the advocacy pool. We invite you to attend your first advocacy event this year!
YOU’RE INVITED TO A FUN AND CASUAL LEGISLATIVE SOCIAL!

HBA President’s Message Continued From Page 6
The HBA office building work continues on the east end of the building. This remodel encompasses the entire main floor and will result in expanded meeting room space, office space and efficient storage. We are advancing on the strategic plan and are now ready to break into small groups to dig into what our different audiences need, setting goals and measurements of success for the next three years. We’ve taken a hard look at what the Association does and made changes to align our strategic planning with our events, programming and projects for maximum efficiency. We have continued to engage our emerging professionals. Just look at the makeup of our board of directors and attendees at events like the HBA Happy Hour, Parade Picnic and Member Meetings. We are heading in the right direction to engage the next generation’s leaders in this wonderful industry. That is all why I encourage you to get involved. It’s true that you get out of your membership what you put into it. By joining a committee, and networking with your peers, you have access to increasing your professionalism, increasing your contacts and broadening your experiences.
NDAB Message Continued From Page 12
• WHEREAS, the construction industry is one of our nation’s largest industries, employing more than 5 million individuals in the United States, and 1.4 million openings will be available for new craft professionals across the United States by 2022; and • WHEREAS, we recognize and honor the critical role and contributions of construction craft professionals in the development and growth of North Dakota; and • WHEREAS, through a collaborative effort that reaches policymakers as well as local educators and high school students, our goal is to effectively address the issues that have contributed to chronic labor shortages and misconceptions of careers in construction, to develop a skilled workforce for the future.
The proclamation is a reminder that your membership with the HBA of F-M, NDAB and NAHB means that you are a part of something big. Your voice, your involvement, and your passion in the industry is helping to shape the future of young professionals and ultimately, helping to build a piece of the American Dream: owning your own home.

North Dakota to measure whether high schools prepare students to be ready for success upon graduation. One of the areas that will serve “choice ready” well is building a Career Workforce Academy in Cass County. The career workforce academy will serve the region and is where students will have the opportunity to experience multiple types of trades and career choices to guide them into the correct curriculums. Upon graduation our students will not just leave with a diploma, they will be more confident about their career choice and the additional schooling that might be needed. Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation and HBA of F-M leaders believe the Career Workforce Academy will improve our community and region for generations to come. Together we have pledged $1 million toward the project. Join us and donate today to be a part of this ever-lasting legacy. For more details on the Career Workforce Academy please contact Summer Hammond at (701) 232-5846 or summer@hbcfm.com.

Enchanted Rock - Q4041
Wilsonart®
THE NEW QUARTZ COLLECTION Wilsonart’s newly imagined Quartz designs offer a canvas within spaces to expand on your own individual story, while celebrating the serenity of local landscapes. Six new Quartz designs express textures, colors and patterns inspired by the earth’s ancient mineral compositions, elevating quartz surfaces to nature-inspired works of art. The beautiful neutrals range from white to dark and moody giving you the ability to create a unique space whether its calming serenity or bold drama, while paying homage to the merits of Mother Nature’s best work. For instance, the particulates in the pattern called Grayton Beach resemble white sand from the eponymous Florida State Park while Enchanted Rock is named for a natural feature in Texas Hill Country, and Upper Wolfjaw reflects the subtle neutral tone-on-tone found in the Adirondacks.
