DID YOU KNOW? NAHB.org has free resources for members to help keep jobsites safe, manage your business and continue working as the global pandemic progresses.
Published six times per year in addition to the Plains Builder, Permits Plus aims to provide a concise report on building permit numbers and a timely update on Association advocacy efforts.
Wall Bracing Tips From Fargo Inspections Available Online
An important item covered during May’s Building Officials Roundtable was braced-wall construction. No two houses are exactly alike when it comes to constructing them. Fargo’s building inspections department provided a best practices document to the HBA. Access it on the HBA of F-M’s membersonly website. Log in at www.hbafm.com/mza.
Local Jurisdictions Approve Over $7 Million For Career Workforce Academy
Cass County Career Workforce Academy organizers are pursuing a $5 million grant made available through the CARES Act. That effort included securing matching funding from the city of Fargo, city of West Fargo and Cass County. All three approved support now totaling over $7 million. HBA of F-M and Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation have each contributed $100,000 toward the academy (together, the organizations have committed to raise a total of $1 million). Organizers hope to break ground next year. If the labor shortage concerns you, investing in the Academy is another step toward confidence. Contact the HBA of F-M at info@hbafm.com or (701) 232-5846 for more details. HBA President Darrick Guthmiller, Kochmann Brothers Homes, Inc., says, “This is an economic issue. It isn’t just an educational issue. Our Association’s leaders believe that the Career Workforce Academy is the only option available to help solve the economic crisis our industry faces. Thank you to everyone who has given the Academy so much momentum. It’s time to finish up!”
Coronavirus Spike Nationwide, NAHB Urges Jobsite Safety
In an open letter to members in July, National Association of Home Builders Chairman Chuck Fowke urged contractors to recommit efforts to implement and maintain jobsite safety measures. NAHB, in collaboration with the Construction Industry Safety Coalition, developed a comprehensive Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Plan for Construction that outlines the steps every employer and employee should take to reduce the risk of exposure to and transmission of COVID-19. Visit www.nahb.org to access it, as well as many more resources. In addition, the Builders Association of Minnesota has since created and released a template to help members to create a preparedness plan specific to their own business to comply with the state of Minnesota’s requirements. Contact Mark Puppe at (701) 232-5846 or mark@hbafm.com to get a copy of BAM’s information.

Home Builders Association of F-M 1802 32nd Ave. S. Fargo, N.D. 58103
HBA Welcomes Newly Elected Leaders
HBA of F-M engaged in the election process this spring. By meeting with candidates in the June 9 election, member volunteers determined support and introduced them to the organization and positions regarding important issues like special assessments, the F-M Area Diversion Project and property taxes. It’s always been the HBA’s goal to build relationships and serve as a resource to elected officials. June 9 Election Winners: • Fargo City Commission: John Strand and Arlette Preston • West Fargo City Commission: Mark Simmons and Mandy George • Horace City Council: Kory Peterson as mayor and David Fenelon and Bryan Schmidt as councilmen Cass County Commission primary (these candidates now compete for their district seat in the General Election): • District 1: Chad Peterson and Lydia Tackett • District 3: Jim Kapitan and Ken Pawluk • District 5: Marty Johnson and Mary Scherling This month HBA of F-M will organize virtual forums with legislative candidates and meet again with Cass County Commission candidates. 8
Members Meet With Congressmen During NAHB Conference
Despite COVID-19, the National Association of Home Builders pressed ahead with its Legislative Conference in a virtual setting, giving members access to all three members of Congress: U.S. Sens. John Hoeven, Kevin Cramer and U.S. Rep. Kelly Armstrong. These meetings are a critical part of NAHB’s and the HBA of F-M’s advocacy efforts to keep housing issues a priority with federal lawmakers. Local participation makes a major difference. • Key topics highlighted during the visits included: • Building a strong workforce • Expanding eligibility for the Paycheck Protection Program • Strengthening the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit • Opposing the Portman-Shaheen Amendment to energy legislation • Opposing efforts to draft a new Waters of the U.S. rule • Supporting the National Flood Insurance Program as an affordable, predictable and financially stable program.
