HBA Focuses On Upcoming Elections, Workforce Issues
A main part of the HBA of F-M’s mission is to foster a prosperous building industry, which means our staff and volunteers work to maintain the best environment for constructing homes in our communities. Heading into fall, here’s a quick summary of just a few important issues HBA is addressing. 1. Nov. 5 Minnesota Elections
• The city of Moorhead will hold a special election to elect two new council members to fill spots vacated by Steve Gehrtz and Joel Paulsen.
• The Moorhead school district will put a $110 million referendum on the ballot to address needs at Moorhead High School, including covering some cost associated with a career academy planned to fill the former Sam’s Club property. • HBA will also monitor the Dilworth City Council Election as Council Members Julie Nash’s and Kevin Spaulding’s terms expire.
2. NDSCS Career Workforce Academy - Just as Moorhead is developing a career academy that will help introduce young people to the trades, the North Dakota side is working to launch a version through the North Dakota State College of Science’s Career Workforce Academy. HBA of F-M and Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation have pledged to raise $1 million for the academy and are supporting a request for the Cass County Commission to designate $15 million in funding.
3. Job Site Age Minimum - Speaking of workforce development, HBA of F-M is exploring the possibility of lowering the age minimum for children 16 years old and above to work on homebuilding and construction job sites. The goal is to find a way for high-school age kids to experience hands-on work which currently is prohibited due to child labor laws. Leaders and staff are exploring channels to allow an exemption on the state level in North Dakota. 4. Special Assessments - A Fargo special assessments task force that will produce recommendations for policy changes for the city commission in coming weeks. HBA is watching closely. 5. Concrete Quality Issues - With changes in de-icing measures and numerous other impacts, builders have seen an increase in concrete shale pops and scaling over the past decade. HBA held an education session on best practices for pouring concrete and how to educate your customers on protecting their investment. Contact Chelsea Diederich at (701) 232-5846 or chelsea@hbafm.com for more details on any of these issues.

Millennials Show A Growing Preference For New Homes
Aug. 20, 2019 - Among general housing preferences, there is a noticeable upward trend in the percentage of millennials who desire a new home built for sale offered by a builder, according to a recent study by the National Association of Home Builders’ economics team. Between 2007 and 2018, the percentage of millennial home buyers who prefer a new home increased from 28 percent to 41 percent. This increase seems to be at the cost of the desire for a home custom-built on the eventual home owners’ lot, which fell from 37 percent to 18 percent over the same period. Preference for an already existing home hovered around 40 percent during this 11-year time span. For more on this story, visit www.nahbnow.org.
