HBA of F-M
President’s Report HBA steps into September with Habitat Build celebration, consumer events
Moving into fall, your HBA of F-M looks forward to wrapping up the Home Builders Care Build for Habitat and hosting three first-class public events: Fall Parade of Homes, Remodeled Home Tour and Fall Home Show. Terry Becker As of press time, Sept. 24 was targeted for a house Terry Becker blessing ceremony for the Home Builders Care Build. This Construction, LLC is our chance to celebrate the build with everyone from Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity, our membership and, of course, homeowner April Nelson and her children. Please watch for more details on this event and look for a recap next month. The Fall Parade of Homes will be Sept. 8-9 and 15-16 featuring 28 homes by 17 Builders. Our first-ever Remodeled Home Tour will be Sept. 15-16 featuring seven homes. These two wonderful events allow our Builder and Remodeler members to showcase their work to consumers. Check out pages 10 and 26 for details on the entries and look for magazines Sept. 4 at all Hornbacher’s. The magazine encompasses both events; we encourage you to get out and say hello to your fellow members showing these great homes! They will appreciate seeing you. We end the month with the Fall Home Show Sept. 28-29, featuring a new Friday-Saturday format. It will include seminars from Joel Karsten of Roseville, Minn., discussing landscape design and yard improvement and Cass County Extension Horticulture Agent Todd Weinmann addressing fall gardening and winterization topics. Special thanks to Accent Kitchen & Bath for sponsoring both the Remodeled Home Tour and Fall Home Show. We appreciate your support and commitment to those events.
September is Associate Appreciation Month
Associate members make up the majority of our great HBA, and every September we make a point to highlight them. This month is designated by the National Association of Home Builders to pay tribute; Builder members, please thank the Associates you work with every day. At the August picnic, the HBA honored them by giving away prizes and by featuring dessert served by the Builders. Plus, all Associates in attendance were entered in a drawing for a half-page ad in the Plains Builder and a gift card for “lunch on the HBA.” See pages 21-22 for a recap.
November Membership Meeting features former Disney executive covering leadership, customer service
I know that November seems like a long way off, but it’s not! We are bringing in world-class speaker, Dennis Snow, for the November General Membership Meeting and changing the format of this meeting, as well. Snow’s customer service abilities were born and developed over 20 years with The Walt Disney World Company. In his last year with Walt Disney World, his leadership performance was ranked in the top 3 percent of the company’s leadership team. He will present “Leadership & Customer Service – Lessons from the Mouse.” See page 23 for more details, and don’t miss this awesome learning and networking opportunity.

Never a dull moment at the HBA...
Feb. 22-24 Fargodome
Thanks to some planning by Ken Krajsa, State Bank & Trust, the HBA of F-M board of directors were introduced to a chicken during their August meeting. A joke meant for Dan Lindquist, Dan Lindquist Construction, Inc., soon got the whole conference room involved as the chicken “mysteriously” escaped its cage. After some screams and nervous laughter, Krajsa quickly caught the chicken and safely returned it to its home. It sure was one unforgettable board meeting!

North Dakota housing is booming!
Meet your elected official: Fargo City Commissioner Melissa Sobolik
by Rocky Schneider, Director of Public Affairs
In a report on housing showing the activity in the ten largest cities, total value of new residential construction is over $450 million through June. This is over twice the value during the same period in 2011 according to the report released by the North Dakota Association of Builders. Driven heavily by the oil activity in the western part of the state, Dickinson leads the pack with the most new housing starts with 311, followed by Bismarck at 231, Minot at 195 and Williston at 155. For some comparison, through June, Fargo is at 125 and West Fargo at 157. “The recent oil boom is like the days of the ‘Gold Rush.’ We have contractors, builders, and developers from around the United States working in northwestern North Dakota. It’s a controlled chaos and has been a challenge to educate the new businesses to North Dakota to follow our rules,” said NDAB 2nd Vice President Ken Callahan of Montana Dakota Utilities. To give more perspective on the housing activity and dramatically increased need for housing, Dickinson’s 311 housing starts is not only a record-setting pace for the city, it is more than the total of the previous two years combined. The report is available as an insert in the issue. Contact Rocky Schneider at (701) 232-5846 or rocky@hbafm.com with any questions.
Mark your calendar for the next GMM Oct. 9. Don’t miss out on the Builder & Associate of the Year reveal, 25-year member recognition and announcement of the 2013 HBA of F-M Board of Directors. More details on pg 20.
Melissa Sobolik Fargo City Commissioner
What is your background (education/prior work experience, etc.)?
I grew up on a farm in Courtenay, N.D. I earned my bachelor’s degree in political science from Concordia College. Shortly after college my husband and I moved to Long Beach, Calif., and moved back “home” after a year. It was then I found my place in the non-profit world. I served as the associate program director for Northern Great Plains, a think tank on rural development in five states. From there I moved into the Great Plains Food Bank where I’m currently the director of agency and client services.
Why did you decide to run for public office?
It has always been my dream to run for public office. I see this as a way to serve the community in a different way than my professional work. I ran in 2010 and was unsuccessful, but was ready to run again in 2012. I think government makes better decisions when there are diverse points of view, backgrounds and experiences at the table. I’m excited to bring a different, new point of view to the City Commission.
What issues are most important to you?
One of the issues I’m most passionate about is youth leadership; from elementary school to young professionals. Young leaders will be leading our city, state and country in the future and we need to teach them the skills necessary to transition seamlessly. We need to be proactive in mentoring our future leaders to pass along knowledge and history. Sobolik con’t on pg 38

Association of Minnesota
Minnesota subcontractor registration program now in effect
The Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) launched a new Subcontractor Registration Pilot Program as of July 15. The program was put into place during the 2012 Minnesota Legislative Session and became effective July 1. While DLI is calling it a contractor registration program, it’s actually for subcontractors. This does not change the current licensure requirements for builders and remodelers. This registration program is for subcontractors, meaning all general residential building contractors not already licensed by DLI must register. If you are a contractor performing any construction work for which a license, certification, or separate registration is required under Minnesota Statute Chapter 326B (i.e. residential building contractor or boiler, electrical, elevator, HPP, or plumbing contractor) then you must apply for a license and may not submit a contractor registration. This pertains to both commercial and residential construction. All subs must be registered by Sept. 15 to avoid enforcement penalties. Enforcement begins Sept. 15, and there are significant potential fines for general contractors employing subcontractors that are not registered. Registration is free and can be done online at: www.dli. mn.gov/register.
14
BAM has put together a page with all the information and links available as well as a handout that can be given to subcontractors. Both are found at: www.bamn.org/ education. The page includes a letter received from DLI, a one-page explanation of the program, a three-page frequently asked questions section, and links to information provided by DLI online. For more information about contractor registration: • Visit: www.dli.mn.gov/CCLD/register.asp • Call: (651) 284-5074 • Email: dli.register@state.mn.us
Frequently Asked Questions Q: Who has to register? A: An individual or business entity that performs building construction or improvement services must register with DLI unless they: • Have a current license, certificate or registration issued by DLI; • Have a current independent contractor exemption certificate; • Are an employee of a business performing construction services; or • Are exempt from licensing under Minnesota Statutes 326B.805, subd. 6 (5) or excluded from registration requirements under Minnesota Statutes 181.723, subd. 4a.

News from the National
Association of Home Builders
Rising home prices push affordability slightly lower In second quarter Aug. 14, 2012 - Strengthening house prices in metros across the country contributed to lower housing affordability in the second quarter, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index (HOI), released today. The latest HOI data reveal that 73.8 percent of all new and existing homes sold in the second quarter were affordable to families earning the national median income of $65,000. This is down from a record high of 77.5 percent of homes that were affordable to median-income earners as of the first quarter, and is largely attributable to rising prices in metros across the country. A full 92 percent of metros covered in the latest HOI saw their median home prices rise between the first and second quarter. “While interest rates and overall housing affordability remain very favorable on a historic basis, the decline in the latest HOI is a positive development because it is another signal that the housing recovery is starting to take root, and it lends needed confidence to prospective buyers and sellers who have been reluctant to move forward in the current marketplace,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg, a home builder from Gainesville, Fla. The most affordable major housing market in this year’s second quarter was Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OhioPa., where 93.4 percent of homes sold during the period were affordable to households earning the area’s median family income of $55,700. Also ranking among the most affordable major housing markets in respective order were Dayton, Ohio; BuffaloNiagara Falls, N.Y.; Indianapolis-Carmel, Ind.; and Modesto, Calif. Among smaller housing markets, Fairbanks, Alaska topped the affordability chart with 98.7 percent of homes sold during the second quarter being affordable to families earning the area’s median income of $92,900. Other smaller housing markets at the top of the index include Mansfield and Springfield, Ohio; Carson City, Nev.; and Kokomo, Ind. Meanwhile, New York-White Plains-Wayne, N.Y.-N.J. retained the title of the least affordable major housing market in the country for a 17th consecutive quarter, with just 29.4 percent of homes sold there being affordable to families earning the area’s median income of $68,300 as of the second quarter. Other major metros at the bottom of the affordability chart included San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City, Calif.; Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Conn.; Santa AnaAnaheim-Irvine, Calif.; and Los Angeles-Long BeachGlendale, Calif.; in that order. Ocean City, N.J., retained its title as the least affordable smaller housing market in the second quarter, with just 43.8 percent of homes sold in the second quarter affordable to families earning the median income of $71,100. small metros at the bottom of the list included San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles, Calif.; Santa Cruz-Watsonville, Calif.; Dover, Del.; and Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Goleta, Calif., respectively. Please visit www.nahb.org/hoi for tables, historic data and details. Editor’s Note: The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index is a measure of the percentage of homes sold in a given area that are affordable to families earning that area’s median income during a specific quarter. Prices of new and existing homes sold are collected from actual court records by First American Real Estate Solutions, a marketing company. Mortgage financing conditions incorporate interest rates on fixed- and adjustable-rate loans reported by the Federal Housing Finance Board. The NAHB/Wells Fargo HOI is strictly the product of NAHB Economics, and is not seen or influenced by any outside party prior to being released to the public.

NAHB offers mechanics lien release forms in Word format This information is provided as a service to members of the National Association of Home Builders. Any statements, cases, statutes or other matters cited, are provided for information purposes only, and are not intended to constitute a legal opinion or to be an exhaustive listing of all materials or precedents regarding the specific issue that is raised. The information is provided only to familiarize you with the law in each respective area. An experienced attorney should be consulted to determine how this information may apply to a particular situation.
Q: I am required under my contract to provide customers with mechanics lien releases signed by my subcontractors and suppliers. Where can I get mechanics lien release forms? A: Eight states have codified the form language for mechanics lien releases, one state has statutory language for partial releases, and another state provides uniform legal documents, including a mechanics lien release form, as a convenience to the public. The use of state-provided forms or language, where applicable, is recommended. Specific state-provided forms and language are provided on the Legal Tips page at www. nahb.org., as well as all other states that do not provide forms or specific language. If a release form is to be filed with deed book records (e.g., to release a recorded lien), then the subcontractor’s or the supplier’s signature on the release form should be notarized. No acknowledgement (notarization) is necessary for other completed release forms that are supplied to customers or financial institutions, and that are not to be filed of record. HBA continues to advance on strategic plan goals
In the spring of 2010, HBA of F-M leaders formulated a three-year strategic plan for the Association. The group consisted of HBA directors, committee members and staff. Facilitators from the Nancy Kelly National Association of Home Builders Heartland Labor HBA Strategic Plan traveled from Washington, D.C., to Monitor conduct the planning session. The HBA’s mission statement remains the same: “The mission of the Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead is to provide quality services, benefits and education to our members and the community. Striving to be a visible and proactive influence, the Association represents the collective interests of the home building industry.” At the planning session, we discussed four areas critical to the HBA and formulated the objectives and strategies listed to the right. I have been appointed to monitor this final year of the plan and make regular reports to the board and membership. A common theme in this strategic plan is the need to communicate “return on investment” to the current membership and demonstrate the HBA’s positive impact on the community to consumers. In these challenging economic times, our leaders identified the importance of showing members what they are receiving for their dues, as well as increasing the HBA’s good works in the public’s eyes – which will positively impact members, too! Much has been accomplished, and even completed, within the plan and requires an ongoing effort by staff and members. The following are some bullets of additional progress the HBA has made since the last published update in March: • The HBA is working on promoting green building efforts. It is working to achieve the National Green Building Standard bronze level with the Home Builders Care Build for Habitat. The house will be the first project of its kind in the Fargo-Moorhead area, and the Association hopes to use it as an example to show consumers and builders that there is a reasonable and achievable approach to green building for our area. • Staff is making a concerted effort to gather more interior photos of homes on the Parades of Homes and the Remodeled Home Tour to add more consumer value to the online component that goes along with these events. • A survey was circulated to the HBA membership gathering feedback on the Association’s services. • Staff is developing an operations manual to compile and keep track of in-house policies and procedures. • Staff will highlight committee accomplishments quarterly in the Plains Builder and to other
16
committees. This replaces monthly committee briefs recounting routine business happenings to all committees and quarterly briefs in the Plains Builder. • The first ever Remodeled Home Tour will be Sept. 1516 featuring seven local remodeling projects ranging from an entire home renovation, to a bathroom, to a kitchen and basements. If you are interested in reviewing the entire strategic plan, please contact the office at (701) 232-5846. Also please remember, we have several committees to choose from with varying focuses. If you would like to try one out, let us know! Your involvement can be as little or as immense as you want – it is your decision and it is your Association. I will provide a summary of the current three-year plan in six months. The HBA of F-M is planning to schedule a new strategic planning session for early 2013. Look for an update when that process is complete!

EPA makes most recent Renovate Right pamphlet available
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is advising home owners to test their homes for lead paint dust after Larry Leadhead getting any remodeling or renovation EPA Lead Enthusiast work done – and now requiring remodelers to inform home owners of that option through its newly revised Renovate Right pamphlet. The current edition, dated September 2011, is available for download from the EPA. After pressure from Congress and an NAHB-led coalition forced EPA to back away from clearance testing in its recent amendment to the Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, this latest revision appears to be EPA’s way to encourage consumers to choose it anyway, rather than stopping at the cleaning verification that professional remodelers are already required to perform, notes NAHB Environmental Policy Analyst Matt Watkins. The RRP rule requires that remodelers, window installers and other contractors distribute the Renovate Right brochure to property owners and tenants living in homes built before 1978 prior to beginning any remodeling work. Remodelers and other contractors who have already printed copies of the April 2010 version of Renovate Right should download a copy of the July 2011 insert page from the EPA publication website – because they must use this new version to be compliant with the law. The revision is on page 10 of the pamphlet: “For Property Owner: After the Work is Done,” and calls to the attention of the recipient “lead-dust testing.” Renovate Right should be distributed no less than seven and no more than 60 days before a remodeling project. Remodelers working in a common area of a multifamily building must ensure that a copy of Renovate Right is posted at the job site or distributed to all residents. In the case of daycare centers or other child-occupied faculties, the brochure needs to be posted or given to the parents or guardians.
Find code requirements, code inspectors online Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry has built a one-stop “Local Code Lookup” – online at http://workplace.doli.state.mn.us/jurisdiction – to help contractors and homeowners find local code requirements and code inspectors in one place. The online search tool helps users find which code authority has local jurisdiction for permits, plan review and inspection in the areas of boilers, building codes, electrical, elevators, high-pressure piping, plumbing or other Minnesota construction codes and licensing disciplines. By using the Local Code Lookup, the user can determine if the local jurisdiction has adopted the state building code, if it uses local electrical fees, which inspectors to contact and their phone numbers, etc. Users can choose jurisdiction directory information for a specific city, township or county.

A decision was issued Monday by the Minnesota Court of Appeals, in favor of the Builders Association of Minnesota (BAM), with a huge impact on residential construction in Minnesota. Without this ruling, any municipality in Minnesota would have been able to create a policy and use it to override the state building code; diluting the power of the code. Luxury Builders
Company perseveres with dedicated staff, range of services by Kirsten Rosenow, Communication & Office Coordinator
Ten years ago, working from the back of his rusted jeep, Jeremy Wallace, president of Luxury Builders, struggled to start out in the industry with his own framing company. He started to teach himself the ways of the trade by talking to local contractors and spending his nights studying how-to books. He spent the next few years building up clientele and solid references to grow his company and strengthen his reputation. From decks to framing and specialty woodwork to fireplace mantels, Luxury Builders has been experiencing hands-on what it takes to make it in the industry in the Fargo-Moorhead area. “I started framing and moved into the construction industry from there,” says Wallace, who turned his company into a corporation about three years ago Luxury Builders employees stand in front of their company vehicles and He then sold trailers. Luxury Builders has been operating in the Fargo-Moorhead area for over ten years. some of the shares to two of his employees, Nate Branson and Tony Eder, whom he felt were big contributors to the company. Since its start, Luxury Builders has grown to 20 employees, working on the vast array of services they provide, many who have stayed with Wallace since they started. “This company has become like one big family,” says Wallace. “At our company we understand the needs of our employees and try to do the best we can to take care of them, because without them, we would not succeed.” With a core group of employees, Wallace knows that he has the manpower and experience to handle almost anything that comes their way. Some of Luxury Builders’ employees are designated to specific jobs like framing and trim work or specialty woodwork, allowing them to do the best work they can at a quicker rate. “We’re the guys builders call when they need a job done quick,” says Wallace. “And we can do just about anything.” Wallace sees one challenge of the industry in finding good, dependable workers. He is thankful to have a crew that has been with him for quite awhile, which helps them get jobs done quickly and efficiently. Luxury Builders is also staying on top of the industry by looking ahead and making smart choices for its future. Luxury Builders con’t on pg 36

Selling Universal Design So Buyers See It as a Plus
Homes with universal design features are, by definition, for everyone. But too often, the ease-of-use features that are so helpful to everyone–young, old, able, or mobilitychallenged–are presented to mature buyers as aging-inplace features, or ADA-compliant. Such terms can raise the spectre of a frail old age to prospective buyers who’re just looking for a more user-friendly, lower maintenance home that complements an easy-living lifestyle. The experts presenting this webinar will explain the importance of educating the consumer as to the benefits of specific universal design features, present ways to talk about those features in appealing terms, and share techniques that help you move prospective residents into your communities.

National Green Building Standard
Threshold Point Ratings for Green Buildings
Most builders can achieve green certification through ‘practical’ green building approach by Krista Mund, Communications Manager Editor’s Note: The Home Builders Care Build for Habitat will generate the first home in the Fargo-Moorhead Metro area to qualify for the National Green Building Standard. This is the second in a series of three articles; it explores the process for qualifying. The first article summarized the standard itself, and the third article will cover selling points of getting homes certified. For more information on the standard, visit www. nahbgreen.org.
Last month, we introduced readers to the National Green Building Standard, the first and only residential green building rating system to undergo the full consensus process and receive approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The Home Builders Care Build for Habitat will generate the first house built to this standard in the F-M metro area. “This Build provided an opportunity for the HBA of F-M to demonstrate to our members just how realistic it is to qualify for this standard,” HBA Executive Vice President Bryce Johnson says. Qualifying for the bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels is point-based; a free Green Scoring Tool compatible with the standard is available at www.nahbgreen.org/ ScoringTool.aspx. Anyone can score homes with this tool: builders, designers, consultants, verifiers and homeowners. It was the starting point for the HBA of F-M volunteers who went through the spreadsheet and plans for the home to determine what could be counted for points toward achieving the Bronze designation. Nate Lotvedt, Heritage Homes, and Scott Fluge, Authentic Green Solutions, LLC, were key volunteers involved with meeting the National Green Building Standard. Fluge is a certified NGBS verifier and has inspected projects all over North Dakota. “I just wanted to donate my services to help the new owners live in a well-built home from an efficiency standpoint,” he says. Lotvedt is a project manager at Heritage Homes and is a LEED-certified professional. He was curious about the steps to get a new home NGBS-certified in the F-M area. “I have always been curious about ‘green’ building,” he says. “In the years to come, this will be the new norm when building houses.” Lotvedt has been collecting all information required to achieve the bronze level. “The scoring tool is easy to use and is laid out with ease of use in mind,” Lotvedt says. “It is broken into sections that apply to specific areas and will help you with most questions you have. The bronze level was achieved on this home without changing or adding anything.” Fluge has been inspecting the home during different stages of construction. Some of the main points he looked for during construction were:

Both Lotvedt and Fluge agree that the NGBS is very practical compared to other standards. “I think the biggest advantage of the NAHB standard is cost,” Lotvedt says. “It all depends on which level you are going for, but in the bronze level, I feel that the cost is very minimal if any. NAHB has setup a system that is tailored towards housing and can be achieved by just about every builder.” Look for a recap of the entire HBC Build for Habitat for Humanity project in next month’s issue!

How to review a resume in 10 seconds flat by Rikka Brandon, Building Gurus Editor’s note: This article is the third in a series of five featuring Rikka Brandon, Building Gurus, offering tips on recruiting and hiring the right employees. As the local Rikka Brandon building industry rebounds, these articles Building Gurus cover job design, effective job ads, resume review, interview questions and finding the right person for the right opportunity at the right time.
Yes, it is humanly possible to review a resume that fast. Don’t you want to learn how? If you’re a recruiter or an HR guru, you probably spend huge chunks of your day reading about “detail-oriented team players.” So how could someone possibly review a resume in ten seconds? Now, note that I didn’t say I thoroughly review these resumes in ten seconds. The ten-second resume review is how I determine which candidates are worth a more in-depth look. Essentially, I’m looking for deal breakers. We have numerous clients that have posted an ad and gotten 700-1,500 responses. Great, right? Not really. This just creates an overwhelming project for HR managers and hiring managers who already have at least 15 other things to do. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to screen resumes quickly so you can spend your time talking to the right candidates! Location: Do they live in the targeted location? Are they in the territory? Is it a reasonable commuting distance? Keep Google maps open so you can plug in the info if you’re not familiar with the geography. Titles: Are the titles in line with the position you’re looking for? If you’re looking for a Territory Sales Rep and they have been a Sales Manager for the past five years, move on. Channel: Is their experience in the right channel? Are they selling to big box stores and your client is looking for two-step distribution? Successes: Is their resume really just a copy/paste from their job description? Or is it full of quantifiable examples of their success? When looking for sales people, you want to see that someone knows their numbers and can prove their successes. Visually Appealing: It might sound a bit snobby, but a resume should be a written example of a candidate putting their best foot forward. If it’s a mess or disorganized, it gives the impression that they aren’t too worried about how they appear or they are technologically challenged. That said, if the mess of a resume has the right experiences, they might be worth a conversation! But what about the objective or summary? The objective of a resume is pretty much always to get a job,
32
right? That makes it a fairly moot part of resume real estate. The summary is promotional self-evaluation. If it’s full of quantifiable successes, read it. Otherwise, a quick scan is enough. Often, you can use the objective to rule people out rather than ruling them in. A lot of people forget to adjust their objective so it says the wrong company name or wrong title. So unprofessional! That certainly doesn’t indicate a strong attention to detail or interest in the position. What about the summary? It’s often way, way too wordy. Of course, this is the 30,000 foot view of the resume. Once you’ve narrowed your search to the 1020 percent of applicants who actually fit your criteria, spend a bit more time reviewing the resumes before you contact candidates. Wouldn’t we all prefer to spend our time talking to people that might actually be the right person for the job? Rikka Brandon is the leading building products recruiting expert in the nation and owns Building Gurus which is based in Moorhead. She has been recruiting exclusively in the building industry since 2001. Learn more about Building Gurus at www. buildinggurus.com.

#246 Corner
Exciting events planned for the end of 2012 by Amy Berg, CIT, NAWIC chapter member
The Fargo-Moorhead, N.D. Chapter #246 of the National Association of Women in Construction has an exciting upcoming schedule planned. We are working with the Red River Zoo to build an exhibit for the white-naped cranes that they have in a holding area. We were contacted by Lisa Tate, the zoo director, for assistance in building the habitat and have been working since March on the details. Member Laura McGowan of Advance Drafting drew up the plans and we are currently locating materials to be donated and hope to have the habitat built in late September or early October. Next on the agenda – we will be sponsoring a Block Kids competition for children in grades 1 through 6 in Perham, Minn. Oct. 6. This competition is a way to introduce children to the construction industry while

making it fun and allowing them to use their imagination. Each participant receives 100 Lego® style blocks and can use up to three of any combination of a piece of foil, string, poster board or a rock to build their construction related design. It is always very interesting to see what they can come up with. On Nov. 15 we will hold our 34th Annual Industry Auction to support our construction education programs. This is always a fun night and great way to help promote the construction industry and meet our scholarship recipients (our future construction industry). You can join us at our monthly meetings the second Thursday of each month (exception November) at the Fargo Holiday Inn by contacting Amy Berg at (218) 234-6633 or aberg.nawic@yahoo.com. For more information on any of these events or the opportunity to become a part of NAWIC, the FargoMoorhead chapter, any of our programs and to receive our monthly newsletter, please contact Amy Berg at (218) 2346633 or aberg.nawic@yahoo.com.

Spike Club Q & A
Spike Superstar
What are the benefits of becoming a Spike?
The real benefits are intangible—you are recognized for your contributions to the HBA of F-M and regarded as an accomplished and connected member. Additionally, Spikes receive: • A coveted invitation to the biggest party of the year, the Spike Party/Directors Reception at the International Builders’ Show;* • Increased visibility, recognition and networking opportunities at industry events; • Unique and valuable lapel pins for each level of achievement; • Additional VIP treatment throughout the year.
Dawn Schmitt
*
Letters are sent only to eligible Spikes who have at least six credits and one new member recruitment credit between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31. The recruitment credit may be composed of one full credit received when a new Builder or Associate member is recruited or two half credits received when Affiliate or Council members are recruited. (The HBA’s October board meeting for approving new members is Oct. 16, so you must have recruitments turned in for that meeting!)
How do I become a Spike?
Before becoming a Spike, you are a Spike candidate. That means you have earned between one and five Spike credits. Once you earn your sixth Spike credit, you become an official National Association of Home Builders Spike! (Providing you have earned those six credits within two consecutive membership years.) Spike credits are earned by recruiting and retaining NAHB and Council members. To retain your status as a Spike you must earn a minimum of one Spike credit (new or retention) each year until you reach a total of 25 credits, at which point you are elevated to Life Spike status.
Braaten Cabinets, Inc. 12.50 credits
Dawn Schmitt, Braaten Cabinets Inc., has earned 12.50 credits. She joined the New Member Development committee last September and has worked hard to help the Association reach its goals. Thank you for your hard work!

Composting for all seasons Saturday 1:15 p.m. Is there anything that compost doesn’t help? Attend this seminar and learn everything you’ll need to know to become your neighborhoods “king of composting.” Compost bins use naturally occurring soil microorganisms to break down organic material like yard and garden debris and kitchen scraps. It can take years for full decomposition to occur in the wild, but a well-managed compost bin or pile can do the job in months or weeks. Landscape Lighting Saturday 4:30 p.m. Learn the basics of effective landscape lighting allowing your home to take on a special type of night beauty and also improve nighttime safety and security at the same time! Hear Karsten’s perspective on this topic and learn the “tricks of the trade” based on his training and years of experience.
Start planning now if you want to attend NAHB Spike Party 2012 Those planning to attend the 2012 National Association of Home Builders’ Spike Club Party during the NAHB International Builders Show must achieve the required credits: 1. To receive a guest’s complimentary admission ticket, all Spikes must earn one additional new member credit during the 2012 membership year (only credits earned until Oct. 5 will be counted for the Spike Party). Spikes who have earned their own ticket, but have not earned the additional credit required for the complimentary guest ticket, may purchase up to four tickets ($50 each). “Sometimes, I wonder ‘how long are we going to stay this busy?’” says Wallace, but he continues to keep a level head by not financing things he can’t afford and paying bills right away. He also notes that his solid clientele and work with credible builders has helped keep him in business over the years, many of which include HBA of F-M members. For those starting out in the industry, Wallace encourages perseverance. “It may be tough starting out, so get ready to put in a lot of hours,” says Wallace, but he reminds those that once you start building up a customer base and get a system down, things will start to work out. In the Go2030 plan, citizens got the chance to prioritize the issues most important to them and I think working on those issues will be extremely important. Hands down, flood protection is the most important issue, followed by promoting infill, public art, bicycle/ pedestrian infrastructure and design standards.
Is there anything you would like to see the HBA do more of?
There are quite a few programs out there to help people get into housing, or stay in housing. I would love to see HBA partner with the city to do targeted education on the available programs.
