The Big Secret Coming Your Way in Online Advertising And It’s Easy to Get Ready For! As publisher of Home Business Magazine®, I like to scan the horizon to see what will soon impact the world of home business. And I see a big bow wave coming… In recent years, online marketing has descended into mediums of confusion and chaos for home-based entrepreneurs — multiple banner ad sizes, text links, third party ad networks, Google links, landing pages, Facebook, Twitter, websites, and more! The possibilities are endless. There is so much to focus on to push your advertising message into multichannel online mediums, that the challenge is overwhelming. These traditional ways to market online face upheaval, These challenges are driving stress, and change. The online promotion in a radically dominant way to advertise has been banner advertising, new direction. Marketing through accounting for over $10 billion your own digital content is the in 2014. Banner ad blockers, next “big thing. however, are growing in use and can effectively block out most banner advertisements on many websites, including video ads. Third party ad networks are becoming less and less effective as viewers become immune to low-end texts links often rigged to generate unresponsive “clicks.” Facebook is all the rage lately for advertising, but its marketing impact is plummeting due to the difficultly in linking marketing content within a one-dimensional Facebook medium — not “sticky” enough for good advertising engagement. With the added distractions of pop-ups, cookies, and online noise, visitors are sub-consciously ignoring most of the advertising clutter. These challenges are driving online promotion in a radically new direction. Marketing through your own digital content is the next “big thing.” This is commonly referred to as “sponsored content,” but may also be referred to as “promoted content” or “native advertising.” Sponsored content has the same look, format, and appearance as other content at a website. Rather than written as “advertorial,” sponsored content engages the reader with interesting information about a particular home-based business or industry topic — aligned within the editorial focus of the website. The reader is drawn into the editorial, his or her interest is piqued, and they are then “pulled” to follow-up with the article’s sponsor for more information. Instead of hoping someone views your ad message and clicks a link in a split-second of attention, you provide useful information to engage and educate the reader, and then pull him or her to that end result of advertiser follow-up. Better, sponsored content is placed within the same “live” content location for other site content, so viewers do not subconsciously tune the content out the way online ads are increasingly blocked. Sponsored content is easy. The first step is to generate a short article on your specific business, market, or industry. Cover key features and benefits. Align the article with your specific business. Add a video if available. Similar to how you generate a portfolio of advertisements, generate a portfolio of sponsored content articles. Read other sponsored content articles to get a feel for how to effectively write them (visit www.homebusinessmag.com). A simple rule of thumb for good sponsored content is that it should provide similar or more editorial value to the reader as the non-sponsored content on the website.

You Get Results Based On Your Choices Everyone knows someone that thinks moving from their cubicle to an office will make their work lives better. But what does that person do when they realize that someone else has the better window or corner office? In work and in life you’ll often see people who are happy, no matter what they are doing, no matter their wealth, no matter their job, and people who seem a bit lost. What is the happy person’s secret? How did they find this happiness? These people own their lives. They don’t seek the approval of others when making choices and they take responsibility for the outcomes of their choices. To find happiness at work and in life, ask: • • • •

Are you competing with others? Are you seeking approval from others? Do you know what you want to achieve? Do you know how much time, money and energy you are willing to spend to achieve your objective? Do you know that you – and you alone – own your dreams?

The Benefits of Fun in the Workplace To have fun or not to have fun? That is the question. Are you curious how companies like Google, Zappos, Southwest and others develop those winning workplace cultures, with such high productivity and profitability?

Regardless of the industry, there is a common thread running through the highest performing companies: the inherent or stated culture of fun. Among companies denoted as “great” in Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For,” a whopping 81% of employees say they work in a “fun” environment. If you look closely at the highly successful companies mentioned above, they incorporate fun into the fabric of their culture. Fun at work may not be the “silver bullet” that produces superior results on its own, but a workplace environment that prioritizes fun will rise above the competition. With stout leadership, dedicated management and strong company values, companywide fun can take you over the top. Fun at work is building solidarity, connection, and an outlet for workplace stress, and is designed and delivered at regular intervals with forethought and understanding about what your staff needs. Nat Measley, MPA CEO and Managing Partner at The Fun Dept www.TheFunDept.com.

How to Obtain Personal and Professional Balance In business today, leaders and organizations have to be more aware than ever of how their employees balance their work demands and their personal demands. Organizations are constantly focusing on how to improve production, profits and performance, while at the same time maintaining a high level of morale. The issue is the search for personal and professional balance. As there are no definitive parameters for measuring balance, the real goal should be personal and professional separation. In the search for this delicate balance, a leader must first understand why separation is key, and understand the consequences when personal and professional lives overlap. Nathan Jamail President of the Jamail Development Group Author of the Playbook Series www.NathanJamail.com. The Master Game There once was a man named DeRopp who wrote a book titled The Master Game. before. It brings to mind a question many people have asked me over the years about the entrepreneurial genius of Steve Jobs. What did he know that the rest of us did not? My answer was simply that Jobs didn’t actually know more than the rest of us; he simply cared more. I believe that’s the heart of choice: caring more. Not just doing more. And, certainly not just doing something different than what you’re doing today. So, the subject then becomes, what does “caring more” mean? What does it look like and how does it reveal itself, especially at your age and mine? Michael E. BUDGETING Create a Long-Term Budget By Holly Hanson, CFP®, CIMA®, ADPA® Here are six steps to creating a long-term budget that will benefit you in life and in business: 1. Lay it all out: Decide to view the budgeting process as something not to be feared, but rather one in which you can be educated. By embracing your circumstances, you can pinpoint what you can improve and what you can control—and also what you can’t. Start by accounting for everything. Notice what’s necessary, what’s optional, as well as good debt versus bad debt.

3. Track income: This is especially beneficial for those with irregular income. Ultimately, you may need to examine how you can increase your income, be it through petitioning for raises, switching jobs, changing investments to income-producing or adding supplementary income. 4. Set SMART(ER) Goals: This may be a handy mnemonic device – SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely), or add “ER,” which stands for Evaluation and Re-evaluation. Rather than fuzzy “someday” hopes, these acronyms may prove helpful in setting and pursuing goals. 5. Prioritize: Whether one person in a relationship wants to save for a family trip to Europe or to fund their future child’s college tuition, write it all down. Visualizing the goals will help you prioritize by levels of importance. 6. Put the budget into practice: A spreadsheet of some kind is needed both to launch and track a budget. Do not get hung up on pennies; round up to the nearest dollar. Whether or not you’re off

by a few bucks, the idea is simple – to get an overall picture of what you have to work with. From there, you can make informed decisions. BOOKKEEPING Simplify Your Financial Bookkeeping By Donovan Janus, CEO of 17hats Over 75% of new small businesses owners hold negative connotations towards financial bookkeeping— it holds a reputation in

the workplace as the task that sucks time away and skyrockets levels of stress. 17hats, a simple business management app, hopes to change the reputation of bookkeeping by educating small business owners with the following six tips on ways to simplify their management practices: 1. Decide on cash accrual or cash: If your business is coming in under $5 million in annual sales and inventory isn’t necessary to account for, there is really no need to use accrual methods of bookkeeping. The IRS advises sole proprietors to instead adopt the simpler cash method of accounting. Not sure? You can always change it later: http:// www.irs.gov/publications/p334/ch02. html#en_US_2014_publink1000313285 2. Keep it clean: Looking for a simple way to stash your documents? Try a dedicated yearly storage box. Drop in records, receipts, statements, tax return labels, and more to easily reference by year. Keep your box stashed on or under your desk to stay organized. 3. Pay and keep tabs tracking expenses: Those with attention to detail can be Continued on page 18

rewarded. Many don’t realize the write off potential beyond meals and entertainment, but the IRS offers credits for health care, home office, driving, and even child care. 4. Save now, win later: Don’t be tempted by office or equipment upgrades when you’re rolling in dough. Setting aside a budget at the beginning of the year for necessary (and surprise) expenses alike will save you a headache in the long run. 5. Don’t use 1099s from clients as a means of record keeping: Beware, this isn’t bookkeeping at all, and can only complicate matters in a number of ways. Instead, try our automated bookkeeping suite at 17hats to simplify record keeping and get back your time. 6. Make a date: Set a weekly calendar reminder to spend 15 minutes on Monday morning with a cup of coffee and 17hats, poring over your previous week’s records. In a few minutes you’ll be able to get organized and ready for the week ahead. Donovan Janus is the CEO of 17hats, a cloud-based all-in-one business management solution built for solopreneurs, freelancers and microbusinesses. 17hats provides a single hub for email communications, quotes, contracts, project management, bookkeeping and more to over 7,500 users. INVESTING /RETIREMENT SAVINGS Hunt Your Way to Financial Well-Being By Jeff Brummett As dazzling as a high rate of return sounds to every investor, people need to understand what they’re “hunting” with before chasing certain financial goals. A middle-class investor is probably better off aiming for a “reasonable rate of return,” which includes consistent, steady growth over a longer period of time. Going for the big-money return almost always means risking resources that most people simply cannot afford. The middle class and the wealthy hunt with different tools for their respective financial ends: 1. People in the upper class hunt money in the same way a person might hunt a deer —with a high-powered rifle: Such a person can be accurate and succeed from long distances because of the rapid speed of the high-powered bullet and the increased accuracy a telescopic sight produces. Also, because

Creating a spreadsheet is necessary when launching a budget, to track expenses and make informed financial decisions.

of the bullet’s velocity and the ability to quickly re-sight, aim and fire, a wealthy person can afford to miss the target (money) and still catch the prey with a second- or third-round attempt. Even when the wealthy fail, they are not adversely affected by their failure. 2. The middle class hunts money with the likes of a knife, spear, or, at best, a bow and arrow: Consequently, the middle class must sneak up on the prey — methodically, slowly and with great perseverance. In most cases, such hunters must get close to the prey to succeed and have only one shot. If they miss, there isn’t time to reload, re-aim and fire before the prey (money) is long gone and out of range — forever. Simply stated, the middle class must make every shot count toward securing a financial future 3. Step one for the middle class: appreciate slow growth and protect your assets: Appreciate a reasonable rate of return, built over time on the principle of safety first. In recent years, the financial markets have experienced extreme swings. This historic volatility combined with the limited availability

“Retirement-plan holders should

People also need to be sure to protect their nest eggs from unnecessary fees.

years sometimes find that those savings add up to less than anticipated. One reason: Broker fees they either didn’t realize they were paying, or which were higher than need be. But that could be changing. The government estimates there could be $40 billion in savings for investors over the next 10 years. The following are suggestions for investors, regardless of what happens with the proposed changes in legislation in Washington: 1. Know and understand your fees: Retirement-plan holders should look at and understand their fees, which are accessible through websites or prospectuses. Don’t just concentrate on fees for mutual funds. Dig deeper for any miscellaneous fees that might not be as obvious.

As an executive management entrepreneurial leader, Jeff Brummett is a prolific financial public seminar speaker and heads Green Line Financial Services, LLC (www.greenlinefinancialservices.com). He hosts more than 54 seminars across the southern half of Indiana each year.

2. Review your family’s risk tolerance: Too often, the people who advise you on your retirement accounts don’t look at your overall financial picture. They know about your retirement plan that they manage, but may not know about other accounts you hold

W

hile the last installment, Skyfall, is now the seventh highest grossing movie of all time, making nearly $1.2billion at the box office, one wonders just how an over the hill 50-something British spy remains relevant in a world of Avengers and X-Men? Daniel Craig has a theory: “You simply stick to the old adage that a good story goes a long way. And blow stuff up every half an hour,” he laughs heartily. “That’s how it’s done.” It’s a winning formula. Three years since Skyfall, 47 year-old Craig returns for his fourth stint as the super-agent in the hotly anticipated Spectre. As usual, plot devices are tightly under wraps. What we do know is Bond is still mourning from the death of M (Judi Dench) and determined to further unravel the mystery surrounding his dark past. This includes contending with Christoph Waltz and jousting with smoking Bond ladies, Lea Seydoux and Monica Bellucci. Ruggedly clad in a brown leather bomber jacket and slick Aviators, Daniel Craig — married to actress Rachel Weisz and father to 23 year-old Ella, from his marriage to Fiona Loudon — chats animatedly about his 007 legacy, his loyalty to the franchise, fears of typecasting, injuries, working out, ageing, nudity and the folly of his hard man image. Question (Q): How important was it for you to have Sam Mendes back on board? Daniel Craig (DC): Critical, completely critical. I just thought we had started something on Skyfall and I wanted to finish it. There was, they wanted to make another movie immediately after Skyfall but he couldn’t, he just didn’t have time. “I can’t do it, I can’t do it in that time.” And he was right,

the delay was beneficial to us. But I called him relentlessly, four times a day, and eventually he said yes! Q: This is your fourth outing as Bond, how do you maintain interest for yourself?

For actor Daniel Craig, “…if you can’t get excited about making a movie of this size, with this cast, with Sam Mendes and this crew, then go home.” — Daniel Craig

DC: These movies don’t get made very often. It’s just the fourth time for me, and in the grand scheme of things, it’s a spit in the ocean. And if you can’t get excited about making a movie of this size, with this cast, with Sam Mendes and this crew, then go home. Q: You’ve said before, nothing can prepare you for the onslaught of a Bond film.

“I try not to get in the way

of the writers — let them do their work — and then we’ll sit down and get the actors involved. They’ve got things to say, it’s a very collaborative process.” – Daniel Craig

was us beginning again. Although I’m not saying it was a rebirth of Bond, that sounds conceited and I was a huge fan of Bond before and I will always want to bring those elements back in. But I could just do a movie where I was going to straighten the tie and drink a Martini — it’s all been done before. It had to happen in the right way. And we’ve done that now. That for me as an actor, is so important. Q: What do you, as an actor, have regarding say in his development? DC: I try not to get in the way of the writers — let them do their work — and then we’ll sit down and get the actors involved. They’ve got things to say, it’s a very collaborative process. And largely, it’s written on the page, the character is written on the page, the story is on the page, so you just act it. Q: What do you admire about Bond?

DC: I stand by that because you know, most movies, even long movies take three or four months to shoot. This is six, seven, eight months of shooting. You’re halfway through, when you’re not halfway through. You need a massive energy level, no question. I’d love to have a huge social life when I’m making these movies, but there isn’t time. Q: These films are such a huge commitment, why would you want to do more then? DC: Money [laughs] I love playing him. It’s an honor to play him, I get such a big kick out of doing it. I had an opportunity with Casino Royale to wipe the slate clean, this

DC: His inner conflict. It’s about, when he’s knocked down, it’s how he gets up. He takes a lot of battering and so he should —he’s an agent. But it’s how he stands up against adversity because he’s one against many. Q: You got badly injured didn’t you? DC: Terribly [laughs]. I damaged my knee about a third of the way through shooting, and we shut down for two weeks and I went away for surgery. I’m alright, but I’m a long way from perfect. But what I was happiest about was that we didn’t shut down. We could of, but we didn’t. We could have shut down for me to get absolutely fixed, but we didn’t Continued on page 56

Are Businesses Too Timid With Their Growth Plans?

N E W S S TA N D

Variety in business is generally good, but when it comes to profit and revenue, an entrepreneur’s expectations should be fairly singular — go big. That’s according to business development expert Cameron Herold, who drove 1-800-GOT-JUNK’s growth from $2 million to $106 million in a handful of years. Otherwise, he says, you’re probably selling yourself short. “If you’re a CEO or entrepreneur and you do not plan on doubling your profit and revenue within the next three years, you may be lacking focus,” says Herold, author of “Double Double” (www.DoubleDoubleBook.com). “It’s within your grasp to increase your business drastically within a few years, but you need to make several smaller goals in order to do so. It all starts with a vivid vision.” Herold discusses how to cultivate that vision. ■

Get out of your office. A vision needs perspective, and if you’re waiting for inspiration to strike at your desk or the boardroom conference table, you’re bound to get dragged into the daily routine. You need to allow your mind to drift into the future, but at the office you will get pulled back into specific constraints. Go somewhere that allows you to forget metrics, daily tasks and obligations. Great locations to set your mind free include the ocean, a forest or a place in the mountains. Or, simply lie down in a hammock in your backyard and start sketching ideas.

Turn off your computer. Computers are notorious for sucking you into the vortex of daily emails and tasks. Instead, put pen to paper. There’s magic in just writing it all out by hand first.

Mind-mapping allows you to brainstorm without having to provide explanations of strategies for achieving the desired goal. A New Workforce: Why Franchising is a Great Fit for Millennials As the millennial generation is on track to become the largest generation in the workforce, today’s graduates face a hypercompetitive, oversaturated job landscape while also carrying record-high student loan debt. Considering the unique benefits that franchising allows and the differing expectations of this upcoming generation, The Entrepreneur’s Source (www.entrepreneurssource.com) — the nation’s leading alternative career coaching company — offers reasons why franchising is a good alternative career route for millennials: ■

26

Flexibility: Work-life balance is more important to the upcoming generation of working Americans than ever before. Work is progressively more integrated into life outside of nine to five because of evolving technology, so the millennial generation expects their employer to be flexible and, in some cases, to allow them to make their own hours. Because a franchisee is his or her own boss, franchising offers franchisees the unique ability to set their own hours. Additionally, there are a wide variety of franchise concepts that offer different business hours or even seasonal business opportunities. Education: As a college education is becoming more important to maintain a middle-class lifestyle, the millennial generation is increasingly well-educated. Franchising offers millennials the opportunity to use what they learned while earning their college degrees, yet there are also support systems put in place by the franchisor to educate their franchise partners on how to best run the business. With willingness to learn and determination to successfully run a business, even young franchisees are set up for success by their franchisor.

“I got a sketchpad with unlined paper,” Herold says. “Initially, I had trouble thinking abstractly because I’m so left-brained. I turned my sketchpad sideways, ‘landscape mode,’ and ideas for how my company would look in three years began coming to me.” ■

Think “where” and not “how.” Look at the road in front of you. Don’t focus on how you’ll make it happen. The “how” mentality is sort of like trying to edit a first draft before it is written; the “where” mentality allows you to simply get your ideas out first. Where do you want your company to go? Look down the road, see what you see and let the view have its moment. Don’t get ahead of yourself. The how will have its day.

Think outside the box. Getting out of your comfort zone will change your usual thought patterns and spark creativity. Think about crazy stuff – maybe something too outlandish to share at a meeting or even consider seriously.

“I like to use a technique called ‘mind-mapping,’ which isn’t so much formal writing as it is plopping down random thoughts onto paper and fleshing them out later,” Herod says. “Mindmapping allows you to brainstorm without having to provide explanations of strategies for achieving the desired goal.” Here’s a good rule: if what you think about during one of these sessions seems bizarre or unlikely, it’s something you should definitely include in your vision.

The Ibiza CEO Running a Startup While Enjoying Summertime in Ibiza

S

tartup founder, Deekron Krikorian of MotionTraxx, was able to pursue his dream of spending a summer abroad in Ibiza, enjoying the music and nightlife of one of the clubbing capitals of the world, while using technology, co-working and other tools to effectively manage his startup and ensure it moves towards its goals while he was abroad. His answers to the interviews were written while basking on the island. 1) How did you come up with the idea to go to Ibiza and why? How long did you stay? I fell in love with Ibiza when I first went there in 2008 with some friends from Madrid. I’m a huge lover of Techno and House, and it really has the best nightclubs and parties in the world for dance music. Yet, what surprised me were all the other amazing things Ibiza as an island has to offer, which you can take advantage of during the day. Things like hidden coves with breathtaking views, daily spiritual activities like mediation and yoga, and a mandatory ferry trip to the neighboring island, Formentera, renown for its raw island beauty. I recently separated from my wife (over the Christmas 2014 holiday), went through a divorce this year and found myself suddenly single again. With the summer in front of me, I got the inspiration to spend the entire summer season in Ibiza. I figured that it would make a nice break from the intensity of my home town of NYC, and going for the entire summer would help me take full advantage of the amazing music out there, as well as provide a chance to hit the ‘refresh’ button on my life. I had to move a few small mountains to make it happen, but it’s been totally worth it! 2) Tell us about your startup. What is it about? Our NYC-based startup has developed a fitness app, called MotionTraxx, which motivates you to push harder in the gym so you can be fit and feel great. It streams soundtracks that combine audio coaching from top trainers with music that’s synced to the workout. We

say it’s like having a fitness class in your earbuds. 3) Who is on your team? How did they handle the news that you were going to Ibiza for the entire summer? We’re a three-person team and we work full time on MotionTraxx. My MotionTraxx streams soundtracks that combine cofounder, Jason Keck, heads up our tech and audio coaching from top trainers with music that’s runs everything related synced to the workout. to our app. Production of audio content falls on my 4) How did you communicate plate. I sense that, often, startup teams can get too heads down and focused on their startup and lose sight of the things that matter personally. Business can do that. But by default, we’ve developed a culture of freedom and flexibility on our team. I think it really works well and it’s one of the things that motivate us to make MotionTraxx a success. That way, we can enjoy a good quality of life and freedom while still having financial success. It’s the only way to fly.

We use most of the common cloud-based tools such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Clear Slide and Asana. One great new tool that we added recently is Uberconference. As a distributed team, our 2X/week team calls were crucial and the free services like Google Hangouts, Skype and FreeConferenceCall.com seemed to always have some kind of call quality problem. We have to pay a small fee for Uberconferece but the quality and cool features have made it a great new tool in our toolbox. The other thing that really helped was finding co-working spaces here in Ibiza (I tried out two different ones, and settled on one – Cowork Ibiza – which was close to where I was living, in Play d’em Bossa). How To Make Money With Non-Lethal Self Defense Products? For 29 years, 1000’s of people have made $5000, $10,000 a month and more by selling the 500+ much in demand, non-lethal, self-defense products provided by Safety Technology. Here are 7 WAYS you can make money with our products.

6. SELL TO BUSINESSES - Sell surveillance cameras to convenience stores; stun batons, Tasers or metal detectors to bars and nightclubs; pepper sprays or personal alarms to hospitals for their nurses, etc. All these things have been successfully done by other Authorized Dealers…plus more!

1. SELLING AT GUN SHOWS - There is no better way to sell anything, then face to face. Selling at gun shows allows you to put your products in front of people who are definitely interested in defending themselves, their families and their home.

7. SELLING ON THE INTERNET WITH YOUR OWN WEBSITE – Without a doubt, selling on the Internet is the best way to reach the largest number of customers. We can even build a money making website for you and teach you how to sell on the Internet.

2. HOME PARTY PLAN SELLING - Yes, just like Pampered Chef or Tupperware! Except you get to keep all the money. You don’t have to accept a paltry commission from the mother company…you are the company. All the profit is yours!

There are many other ways to sell these self-defense and surveillance products. How would you sell them?

3. SELL AT FLEA MARKETS AND SWAP MEETS - Another great way to get the products in front of people. The advantage here is costs less and can do it at the same spot every weekend. Some flea markets even allow you to set up permanent displays. 4. SET UP ROUTE OF GUN STORES, PAWN SHOPS, NAIL SALONS, BEAUTY SALONS - We suggest starting with our pepper spray displays as a way to get your foot in the door. Great way to receive residual income...money on a regular basis because the stores reorder. 5. AUCTION SITES, SUCH AS EBAY AND AMAZON - One way to get your products exposed to a very large number of buyers is to sell on eBay and Amazon. Not only are the auction sites good for selling products, but also lead generation.

5) How did you make things work? How did you plan? How did you work out your schedule to be on the same time zones?

launching our blog and kicking off the redesign of our app.

With me in Spain, we were spread across three time zones. Not to be cheeky, but going to party at nights actually helped us stay in sync. For example, I would often go to bed around 4am, which would only be 10pm in NYC. I’d wake up at 11am, which was 5am in NY. While I’d show up to the co-working space and start my day, around 2pm, it was 8am in NYC. So to keep ‘New York’ hours while in Ibiza helped us with the time zones and helped me get to enjoy the nightlife.

work, is to communicate as much as possible, and to be ready to listen with an open mind and open heart whenever a breakdown in communication causes upset with one of the team members.”

6) What did you accomplish? What were the results? While my productivity in Ibiza fluctuated, depending on what friends were in town and which parties were happening that week (ha!), I don’t feel we missed too much of a beat. During the summer, we were able to move forward on some important items, including negotiating a partnership deal with Bowflex, producing two custom workouts for Shape Magazine, making progress on fundraising,

“The key to making a virtual team

7) What was the biggest challenge for your startup with you, the founder, being away all summer? One challenge, that is endemic to all virtual teams, is that you don’t communicate as much as you would if you were in the same room. This can lead to breakdowns and misunderstandings. I’ve found that the key to making a virtual team work, is to communicate as much as possible, and to be ready to listen with an open mind and open heart whenever a breakdown in communication causes upset with one of the team members. The upset MUST be resolved by phone or Skype, directly

with the party involved. It will not work to try to do it over email or to speak to anyone other than the party that is upset. By maintaining this philosophy, I think we’ve done this fairly well and nipped problems in the bud pretty quickly. The fluctuations in productivity were another challenge. There were times where I was productive, while other times, I was less productive and was a bottleneck for my team or our freelancers from moving forward. There is no shortage of distractions here, but I did my best to maintain some kind of discipline and not let the party schedule slow things down for too long. Besides, at my age (I’m 43) the body just can’t go non-stop for too long like it used to, so that will force you to get back to business as well! 8) What were the lessons learned for your business? And personal life that can transfer professionally? Professionally, taking this trip and still being able to keep the startup going reminded me about the importance of having great people around you and having a great culture at your startup, no matter how small it is.

be healthy through music was the reason I launched my startup in the first place. Along the way, the duties of a startup caused me to relate to music as a ‘to do’, that was part of our product. I rarely took time to enjoy the thing that inspired me in the first place. Being in Ibiza and taking in incredible music from the top DJs and artists in the world have helped me reconnect with the music again and to feel re-inspired and happy for why I do what I do. 9) How would you recommend this to other entrepreneurs, employers/ employees?

Flexibility and freedom for your team members matters, because it will give them balance and allow them to be happy, which will translate to a higher work performance. Turning a Smartphone into a

Digital Assistant Apply Productivity Apps to Save Time and Effort By Alex Quilici, CEO of YouMail ne big headache for small business owners doesn’t involve a shortage of energy or effort —it’s the lack of enough time in each day to get everything done that needs to get done.

O

management apps can also help free up time by blocking unwanted cold calls and stopping prerecorded robocalls.

Small businesses are often constrained by tight budgets and limited staffing, stretching them too thin to hire fulltime secretaries. One solution is to combine productivity apps on a smartphone to create a kind of personal digital assistant.

Bringing Order to the Chaos of Files and Tasks

A wide range of productivity apps can help simplify busy work, freeing entrepreneurs to concentrate on more critical tasks that will increase business value for customers. Here are a few suggestions for how to build a digital assistant that manages your voicemails, calendars, files, and daily tasks. Better Solutions for Handling Missed Calls In many ways, phone calls can be the lifeblood for small businesses by keeping companies close to their clients and building connections to new prospects and sales leads. Unfortunately, small business owners are often spread too thin to pick up incoming phone calls, causing them to forfeit new business or waste time playing back lengthy voice messages. There are two ways to tackle this. One is to get “secretaries on demand”, like Ruby Receptionist (CallRuby). These are often payby-the-minute or pay-by-the-month services that have live people to answer the calls you can’t. A more cost efficient alternative are services like YouMail, which replace standard visual voicemail with more intelligent tools that simulate key aspects of a professional answering the phone, like greeting by name, transcribing messages, and automatically replying, but at significantly lower cost. By applying these personal touches to a voicemail response, small business owners can enlarge their company’s presence to clients and prospective customers. Voicemail 32

A popular file-sharing Creating a digital assistant can simplify less important tasks app is Dropl, which allows and allow you to focus on mission-critical duties. you to quickly capture and send screenshots, videos and other files with a simple web link. Dropl also lets users record screencasts in minutes and distribute them A wide range of instantly. Dropl is free to download, but every productivity apps on file that’s shared is automatically deleted after seven days. To store files longer, users can your smartphone can upgrade to Dropl Lite for $4 per month or help simplify busy work, Dropl Pro for $8 per month.

Another helpful app for busy entrepreneurs is Captio, which allows users to capture their thoughts and send reminder notes to themselves by email. You simply open the app and start typing. When done, just hit send and the note is immediately delivered to your email inbox. You can also send photos and screenshots to yourself. For forgetful people, this is a great tool to quickly capture everything you need to remember. Agenda Calendar 4 by Savvy Apps is an iPhone calendar application with a minimal design, fast event creation, and intelligent recognition when you tap on links and email addresses. Agenda makes it easy to set default alerts, and it even includes a “status taps” feature to keep in touch with fellow attendees at events. Another powerful productivity app is the appropriately named Things by Cultured Code, which keeps track of all kinds of things. It’s an easy-to-use task manager that helps organize to-do lists, activities, appointments, meetings and other deadlines. Taking App Productivity to New Levels

freeing entrepreneurs to concentrate on more critical tasks that will increase business value for customers.

These are just a few examples of the many productivity apps out there today. For instance, HipChat offers a basic hosted IM and group chat service, while Hipmunk is a travel app that integrates data from nearly all of the online hotel and airfare booking sites. Small business owners need to analyze which tasks and processes are draining most of their precious time, and then decide which productivity apps they should apply to save time and effort. Creating a digital assistant can simplify less important tasks and allow you to focus on mission-critical duties. In so doing, you can enlarge brand awareness and enhance customer satisfaction. Former nurse gains 150 clients without marketing thanks to ClaimTek reports By Rick Snider

D

avid Waite has yet to spend one dollar on marketing. No advertisements, flyers or brochures.

And after four years, Waite’s Efficient Medical Billing Services of Portland, Ore. has 150 clients. His biggest problem is figuring out how to accommodate another four or five more clinics calling every week. “It has all been word of mouth by [existing health care] providers,” he said. “My first year I only had two clients while working full-time managing a medical office. In 2013 is when I started picking up one or two new clients a month. Then one client referred me to another and that one referred to another one. “In August 2013, I needed to decide to let it keep growing and quit my job. [My new company] was too busy to do it part time. I quit my job and hired my first employee.” The home-based business needed a little more space so he leased 750 square feet for an office that now holds seven employees. Ironically, that’s less footage than many basements where countless home offices thrive. Waite’s career began as a nurse in a nursing home for five years. But, he noticed how poorly many health care providers handled the business end and saw an opportunity to help himself and medical professionals. “I tell doctors, ‘You went to school to be a doctor. I went to school for medical billing,’ ” Waite said. “When I started doing this, I felt the billing and insurance is so complex you do need to have someone who specializes in it. The problem is health care providers don’t know that.” Waite made a smart move when seeking clients – he took the road less traveled. The majority of his clients are alternative care providers like massage and acupuncture. Many clients have only one or two providers, but it adds up. Today, Efficient Medical Billing

Services processes more than 500 claims daily. “Billing codes are billing codes,” Waite said. “It doesn’t make a difference what type of medicine they’re providing. I saw a market with a need.”

David Waite’s success has him telling others that medical claims processing is a great home-based business to enter.

And with today’s technology that has providers emailing claims to him for processing, Waite easily branched out from his local base. He now has clients in Washington, California and Alaska, too. “My philosophy is most companies just send out the claims,” Waite said. “I tell clients, ‘I’m going to do everything for you as if you have an in-house biller.’ ” Looking for software, Waite quickly found ClaimTek System’s MedOffice software developed by founder and President Kyle Farhat was the clear leader over four others considered. “I chose ClaimTek because of price and functionality,” he said. “They offered the most for the best price.” In particular, Waite likes that ClaimTek’s software is on his computers and server that he can access remotely from anywhere instead of a web-based system controlled by another company. “I went with MedOffice because it’s quicker,” he said. “I can create new accounts for free and process a claim in 30 seconds. An online system may take five minutes. I’m not a big fan of web based-only software. They don’t give you significant reporting capabilities and can get pricy.” And MedOffice’s extensive reports are what Waite finds clients appreciate most. “Almost every single one of my clients love the monthly reports,” he said. “They say it’s

the best reports.” That MedOffice can be quickly learned is also a great plus for Waite. “If you know what you’re doing you can teach yourself the software in a matter of hours,” he said. “It’s very intuitive.” Waite found that ClaimTek’s support system is unmatched with quick phone calls and even texts over requests on weekend nights. “They get back to me within the hour,” Waite said. “We do video conferencing. I send them emails of suggestions for improvements and they’ve implemented a few of them. They take consideration of what customers want.” Waite’s success has him telling others that medical claims processing is a great homebased business to enter. “You can definitely make a living on it,” he said. “It suits any kind of person. It could go from some extra money to a full-time company with employees. It’s up to the individual person. The business is definitely out there.” Meanwhile, Waite loves to umpire softball. He joked of taking a selfie photo when processing claims while sitting on the beaches of Cancun between games. “I can work remotely and umpire wherever I need to,” Waite said. Now that’s a home run. For more information on how to start your own medical billing practice, visit www.ClaimTek.com or call 800-224-7450.

MARKETING & SALES

8 Steps to

Outstanding Sales Structure Apply or Adapt What is Appropriate to Your Business By Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE

ou have great products and services, often complicated and technical, which require trust in order to sell them. Even if you’ve made a compelling presentation, it often takes weeks before you get a response. Therefore, you must burn vivid examples and key ideas into the prospect’s mind so they cannot forget how you’re different from your competition. This is critical if you are one of several individuals or teams competing for the same business. The structure of your presentation is the skeleton under the flesh of your words. You must design and deliver your presentation to be remembered and repeated. What is the typical structure? “Hi, I’m Fred Smith. Let me introduce my team: Tom, Dick, and Harriett.

“Your latest advertising campaign is spectacular.”

“Your stock price is up three points while most of the market is down. Your strategy is on track.”

2. Introduction to their challenge or problem. Do not mention your product or solution now. Instead, talk about their current responsibility, challenge, or opportunity. Then, follow up: ■

This is what we do . . . This is how long we’ve been in business . . . This is what we’re known for . . . These are our clients . . . We would like to work with you . . .” That is a dreary presentation at its worst. What’s an effective structure? This simple, 8-step process frees you to make a seamless argument.

“ You must burn vivid

examples and key ideas into the prospect’s mind so they cannot forget how you’re different from your competition.

“Your board of directors has challenged you with . . .”

“Your competition is increasing in . . .”

3. Differentiate from your competition. Everyone else thanks prospects for their time. Don’t. Instead, say, “Thanks for the opportunity to discuss how our company (be specific with your service or product) can . . . ■

“help you accomplish your goals.”

“minimize your risk in . . . ”

“expand your markets in . . . ”

“demonstrate how our technology will be able to . . . ”

6. Review key ideas. Do this with a rhetorical question or a simple statement based on your premise: ■

7. Head into the close with confidence, not a question. Many of your competitors close on questions. No. No. No. Close on a high, and let your last words linger. Make sure they’re yours. The warm-up to that is a question: “Based on what you have heard, what are your specific questions?” After you answer questions (and possibly objections), drive the sale forward. Depending on the complexity of your offering or how many people are involved, you may want to say, ■

“At this point, our most logical step is . . .”

“At this point, may I recommend we . . .”

“At this point, our best clients elect to . . .”

“ Your last words are the

most important you’ll say, so never introduce a new idea that you have no time to develop.

8. Reinforce your key idea. Your last words are the most important you’ll say, so never introduce a new idea that you have no time to develop. Good copywriters often write the P.S. of a sales letter first, because it confirms the key idea in the letter. Your approach might sound like this: “Again, thank you for the opportunity to demonstrate how our approach could be what you’ve been searching for. We look forward to our next meeting. In your discussions, remember the results of [other successful clients]. Be secure in knowing we pioneered this industry.” Depending on the situation, you could also say you “are more nimble than our competition,” “can get started as soon as you say yes,” or “are a one-stop shop.” Most professionals are fairly smooth in the body of their presentation. Very few, however, open and close effectively and memorably. Take these eight steps, and apply or adapt what is appropriate to your situation. Script your opening and closing for specificity and brevity. You won’t read it, but work from an outline. In the middle of the night, if your spouse asked,

Your prospect must understand how your product can improve their business and that you are not just a salesperson but also a trusted advisor.

“How will you open and close next week’s presentation,” your automatic response should be exactly what you will say. For 25 years Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE, has taught individual salespeople and sales teams how to speak more powerfully and boost their sales beyond expectations. Patricia is trusted by clients such as Microsoft, ADP, Visa, Genentech, Wounded Warrior Project, and the American Payroll Association. Top Ways to Improve Customer Service

According to a survey, 78% of consumers have bailed on a transaction or have not made an intended purchase because of a poor service experience. No matter how good a product or service is, the success of a company depends on the customer service they provide. Gabriel Bristol, president and CEO of Intelicare Direct, a customer service solutions company, is an expert in the field of customer service and would like to share the top four easiest ways to improve customer service right now. Know your product – There are few things more frustrating than asking

for some information about a product only to be told “I don’t know” or to be referred to a website. Likewise, there are few things more satisfying than asking a question and being given a direct, reasonable answer that informs a decision. Keep it simple – Whether it’s an online retailer, big box store or quick service restaurant, too often companies make it overly complicated for a customer to find/get what they want, pay and leave. Make sure your products are easy to find with easy navigation and/or clear signage. Make the checkout process as simple as you can. Know when to upsell – Whether we’re ordering a fast food cheeseburger or buying a ceiling fan at a home improvement store, invariably we get asked the equivalent of “Do you want fries with that?” Even e-tailers tell us what customers “also bought” when we’re adding an item to our cart. There’s no doubt this can increase

revenue, but sometimes it’s ill advised. If you’re in a brick and mortar retail outlet, and you can tell a customer is in a hurry or you have a long line to check out. That’s not the time to prolong the transaction. Customers may not remember why the lines were long, but they’ll remember that they were. This will inform their decision the next time they need what you sell and may very well decide to see if your competitor is more convenient. Take care of your employees – Most customer service experiences are going to be measured by how helpful the person working with them was. If your employees are underpaid, over-worked or uninspired, that rests with management. To have great employees, one must first be a great employer. By providing a living wage and a great work environment, your employees will mirror your commitment to them when helping your customers.

BUSINESSES & OPPORTUNITIES

Network Marketing

Success The Importance of Hiring a Coach for Personal Development By Dr. Joe Rubino

I

f you were a gifted athlete intent on qualifying to compete in the Olympic Games, you probably wouldn’t even consider the possibility of not having a coach to champion your success. Why would striving to achieve great success in your business and your life be any different? A coach is a person who is trained to ask the right questions to get you to identify missing elements in these arenas. When these missing pieces are put in place, the result is a significant difference in your productivity, happiness, fulfillment and your ability to impact others. Coaches go way beyond training. Training is about conveying information. Coaching is about gaining access to areas we are otherwise blind to discovering about ourselves and our businesses. Coaches source breakthrough revelations by supporting us to explore the arena of what we don’t know that we don’t know. They champion our successes, our happiness and our visions. Skilled coaches claim our goals as their own and act as our partners to look with us to see what’s working optimally and what’s missing that has the results we are after remain elusive to us. They listen to both what we say as well as to what is left unsaid. They do this by asking questions, exploring possibilities, making requests and, at times, confronting issues that may need to be examined. The most effective coaches are familiar with and skilled in the arenas in which they offer coaching support. In Network Marketing, no matter how skilled a coach may be, if she has not built a successful organization herself, there are likely many success distinctions that she may be missing in this arena to properly guide your success and accomplishment. An ideal Network Marketing coach will have the ability to also train in successful methodology when needed. He will also be well versed in the art of how to maximize personal

hen Silvia Stoyanova came to the United States from Bulgaria in 2001, she faced countless challenges in her daily life, from adjusting to a new language and culture to helping financially support her family. Her first priority at that time was to look after her 14-month old son while getting adjusted to life in a new country. When her second child was born in 2003, Stoyanova knew she needed to find a stable income, yet one that would offer a flexible schedule to allow her to take care of her young children. Armed with an American business degree from a college in Bulgaria and a background in financial planning and analysis, Stoyanova looked to start her own business. One year later, she became a franchise owner with OpenWorks, an integrated facility cleaning provider. Owning a home-based business provided

Stoyanova the opportunity to have a successful career while giving her the freedom and independence to tend to her children’s schedules from the toddler to teenage years. As a franchise owner, she juggles many tasks from managing hours and payroll to meeting customers to overseeing cleaning crews. Her responsibilities take her around the Seattle area, checking in with her customers and employees, and ordering the proper cleaning supplies. Stoyanova’s franchise services a wide range of buildings in Seattle, which include churches, residential and medical facilities. OpenWorks provides her with a team of sales people that bring in business, which allows her to do what she does best – managing the operations and employees while providing top service to her customers. The Confidence Effect: Every Woman’s Guide to the Attitude That Attracts Success

HOME OFFICE

By Grace Killelea In business, there is an ugly yet undeniable truth: every single day, talented, hardworking and deserving women are passed over for promotions. While it’s easy to blame a corporate culture that favors men, esteemed executive coach, consultant and keynote speaker, Grace Killelea—author of the highly anticipated title, “The Confidence Effect: Every Woman’s Guide to the Attitude That Attracts Success” (January 2016, AMACOM, hardcover, ISBN 978-0814436417), identifies a different personal accountability-driven culprit: a shockingly prevalent and grievous disparity in confidence. While men are prone to overestimate their abilities, all too often women sell themselves short and needlessly languish in marginalized careers. In her book, Killelea explores in detail what she has identified as the four cornerstones of success — Relationships, Reputation, Results, and Resilience® — and she includes practical strategies showing how to turn job competency into the kind of authentic confidence that gets noticed. Using these pillars, Killelea shows aspiring professionals how to elevate their workplace skills and transcend their perceived limitations to achieve sustained business and personal success. GuruNanda’s Happy Breath Yoga: Wall Street Yoga What if there were a routine for eliminating stress, fatigue, sleeplessness, aches and pains? And what if it only took 14 minutes a day? That’s the premise behind GuruNanda’s Happy Breath Yoga: Wall Street Yoga, the forthcoming book by Puneet Nanda that outlines a simple breathing and meditation-based routine that can be easily fit into the busiest of days. The book, the first in the Happy Breath Yoga series, was inspired by Nanda’s own transformation from exhausted, stressed, diet-challenged, sleep and exercise deprived “Wall Street” personality to a calm, centered and content yogi. Nanda (aka GuruNanda) was the founder of the successful oral care company Dr. Fresh and a former Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. With this book, he aims to help other “Wall Street personalities” — anyone who struggles to get it all done in a harried and high-pressure environment — overcome the fallout of stress, fatigue, back and neck pain, sleeplessness, poor nutrition, and more. Best of all, this simple yoga, meditation and laughter breathing routine can be done in just 14 minutes a day. So it is a realistic way to de-stress, re-focus, lighten up, get healthier and find more joy in life. The book is available at Amazon.com for $14.99. For more information, please visit gurunanda.com. 4 Easy DIY Steps Towards a Smart Home HOME OFFICE

Making the Homes of Tomorrow a Reality Today By Trung Pham, CEO of AXIS, a company designing DIY smart home products

E

ver wonder how humans ever lived without microwaves, smartphones or DVR? In short order, the same will be true for smart home products that allow us to wake up to freshly brewed coffee, blinds opened to sunshine, thermostats adjusted to fickle morning temperatures and televisions turned on to our favorite morning shows. Smart, connected homes, a market set to grow to $71 billion by 2018 according to Juniper Research, is not science fiction. It is a current reality made possible by the widespread adoption of smartphones, broadband and the Internet of Things. However, despite Google’s highly publicized $3.2 billion investment in Nest Labs and companies such as Samsung, which announced Smart Home initiatives at this past CES, a mere two-percent of American households currently have any form of automation in their home. Why does it seem this industry is on the cusp of exploding, but not quite there? It is mainly due to the misperception that smart homes require enormous costs, elaborate setup and experts to install and maintain. As with most technology, that was true initially, but the DIY smart home revolution is changing all that. In fact, Gartner predicts that by 2022 the typical home could contain more than 500 smart devices. As CEO of AXIS, a company that designs do-it-yourself (DIY) smart home products for Millennials, we believe that by creating awareness on how to get started we can help make the homes of tomorrow a reality today. Here are four easy DIY steps towards a smart home. 1. Breathe, Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day: Terms like “user interface” and “geo-fencing” scare the pudding out of most people; you are not the only one. But stay calm. With new DIY smart products on the market, you will be up and running in no time. 2. Build A Sound Foundation First: Before getting all of the shiny new toys that

will make you the envy of all your houseguests, make sure you have a Wi-Fi Router; this is the key to any smart home. HighThere is a misperception that smart homes require enormous costs, quality Wi-Fi elaborate set-up and experts to install and maintain. will ensure all your devices Using your smartphone, you can enable will be able to communicate with each other. a geo-fence that detects when you are around so lights come on. You can also control multiple light switches, set timers and schedules all through the magic of Bluetooth Low Energy.

“Before getting all of the shiny new toys that will make you the envy of all your houseguests, make sure you have a Wi-Fi Router; this is the key to any smart home.”

3. Choose A Smart Home Hub: A connected home is supposed to make life easier, but if you can’t remember which app turns off the lights, you may be in trouble. However, this is fixed by purchasing a smart home automation hub. This will connect all gadgets and control them from one simple app, instead of many. CNET offers a comparison of various hubs. We recommend a hub that supports as many of these as possible: Bluetooth LE, Lutron ClearConnect, Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, and ZigBee.

Nanoleaf LED Bulbs: The most energy efficient LED light bulb on the market will save you $100 per year on your energy bill. For those of us that would rather not spend Saturday afternoon buying bulbs, the Nanoleaf has an incredible 27-year lifespan.

Sesame Smart Lock: This lock replaces your key in favor of a smartphone and requires no tools to install. It actually installs right over your existing deadbolt. On top of this (pun intended), the native functionality of the deadbolt lock is preserved, so you can still use your lock normally if your phone dies. The price of the Sesame is attractive, at a fraction of the cost of its competitors, but its true differentiator is the dead simple install.

4. Start With One Cool Product At A Time: Here Are A Few To Begin:

These initial steps and product recommendations should encourage you to start the transition to a smart home in a way that is easy and won’t break the bank. In time, you will be living just like the Jetsons.

Switchmate: Exceeding their Indiegogo campaign goal by 300%, Switchmate is a smart light switch that installs over top of your traditional toggle or rocker style switches using magnets or an adhesive.

Trung Pham is the Founder and CEO of AXIS, http://axis.life/ . The company designs unique do-it-yourself (DIY) home products for a generation of Millennials that are tech-savvy but not handy. DIY has long been associated with a world of buy-and-build products, complicated manuals and uninspired design. With a set of products initially focused on window treatments, AXIS is redefining the DIY space around simplicity, convenience and design.

From Stilettos to the Stock Exchange Abuse and Trauma Survivor Starts Two Successful Businesses By Sherilyn Colleen

E

ntrepreneur Tina Aldatz is currently the CEO of Savvy Travelers and the Founder of the multimillion dollar company Foot Petals. Derived from a severe burn injury on both of her feet as a child, where she stepped on hot buried coals at the beach, Tina created Foot Petals to help fill a gap in the market for women’s high-heeled foot support. “As a child of domestic violence and a pediatric burn survivor, I have overcome many challenges in my life. But it wasn’t until I was embraced by the footwear industry, that I really felt like part of a community,” shares Aldatz. “I took the opportunity to turn my traumatic burn injury into an entrepreneurial success story.” Through her strength and tenacity, Foot Petals, the revolutionary line of designer insole cushions for women’s high heels, became a successful multi-million dollar company recognized by Inc. 500 as one of the “500 fastest growing companies in America.” Aldatz was also inspired to start her home-based business

after long, arduous hours of commuting and traveling for business meetings. She designed a home office that gave her a “staycation” feel and a resort-style living space, and currently works there along with her staff. Aldatz partnered with best friend Margarita Floris to start Foot Petals. Together, they took a risk and created Savvy Travelers, a lifestyle travel brand dedicated to the wellness of the on-the-go consumer. Aldatz and Floris are paving the way for women-owned businesses and setting an example of how to do what you love, and love what you do. After extensive success, Aldatz wants to support upcoming entrepreneurs. “I have committed a portion of the proceeds from my new autobiography, ‘From Stilettos to the Stock Exchange’ to the Two Ten Foundation’s ‘Women in the Footwear Industry’ (WIFI) program,” says Aldatz. “Through supporting women, students and investors across America, I hope to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs to never give up on striving to make their dreams possible.”

Tina Aldatz is CE0 of Savvy Travelers and the Founder of Foot Petals

Aldatz considers her best business achievement to be selling the company she built from nothing, Foot Petals, to a publicly traded company, and the fact that she is creating new jobs for women. Visit http://savvytravelers.com/ and http://www.tinaaldatz.com/.

Mitigating Workers’ Compensation Fraud 5 Things for Home-Based Businesses to Consider By Liz Griggs, Chairman & CEO of WorkWell Prevention & Care

T

he first “store-front” for many business owners is often the front door of their own homes. In fact, a new home-based business is created every 12 seconds in the United States, according to businessforhome.org. Of course, while many organizations may only start out with one or two employees, some of them can grow from a “one-man-shop” to a major enterprise with a large workforce overnight. Remember, Apple was launched out of a garage by only three people — Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniack and Ronald Wayne — back in 1976 and is now a major corporation with large work teams across the globe. With this in mind, it’s important for small business owners to prepare now for the issues and challenges that may arise from managing teams of employees (whether small teams or future large workforces). One of those issues is mitigating on-the-job injuries and workers’ compensation claims by facilitating a safe and productive workplace environment. While most companies work hard at providing a safe workplace, and at assisting employees with legitimate on-the-job injuries — they still have to be aware of individuals who may take advantage of the system through workers’ compensation fraud.

However, it is also very preventable if organizations deploy the right procedures. The good news is there are now innovative 44

Drug Screenings and Background Checks: Both drug testing and background checks allow organizations to identify the integrity of an individual upfront prior to hiring. Drug tests determine if there is a history of drug use, and, if so, indicate the types of drugs in the system. Background checks investigate the criminal and financial records of an applicant. If any applicant shows negative incidents on a drug or background check, they may be a likely candidate for future fraudulent activity. Onsite Ergonomics Solutions: Involves physical therapists before injuries occur (not just after occurrences), to work with employees, supervisors and management to understand workflow and all job task requirements. As a result, therapists are able to recommend optimum positions, ergonomic strategies and physical movements required at workstations to minimize musculoskeletal impact on the employee.

Prompt Reporting: Trains and engages employees to report any health concerns as soon as they notice any discomfort. Once these early notifications are reported to supervisors, they are able to immediately address the concerns and respond with appropriate evaluations, diagnosis and/or medical care – before the issue escalates.

Reducing workers’ compensation fraud is easier than you may think, given the latest solutions now available to employers. By utilizing these innovative prevention and early intervention models, costs associated with managing illegitimate claims can be reduced, and legal and medical fees can be significantly mitigated as well. Paleo Treats for Healthy Pups Man’s Band and Love of Canines Inspires Retail Site for Animal Lovers By Sherilyn Henderson

D

oug Ratner, founder of I’d Rather Be With My Dog, is not only an entrepreneur but also a guitarist and vocalist in the band Doug Ratner and the Watchmen. He operates a one-stop retail site committed to providing dog (and cat) inspired apparel and accessories to animal lovers worldwide as well as a full line of the first Paleo dog treats on the market.

The song, “Dogs,” was written by Ratner in February of 2013 as a potential track for his group’s latest album Run With Me. By tapping into his love of canines, Ratner began producing music videos for different animal shelters and humane society organizations across the country using “Dogs” as each video’s soundtrack. The response was so overwhelming that Ratner decided to take the plunge and form his own business. In order to support such charities directly, Ratner vowed to donate ten percent of the proceeds from

idratherbewithmydog.net to each group to help save lives. Ratner’s primary customers are those who take pride in showing off how much they love their dogs and who are passionate about feeding their pets healthier treats. Social media is the best source for promoting his business as word of mouth is important in the pet community. According to Ratner, 99 percent of his customers are female.

Doug Ratner is the founder of I’d Rather Be With My Dog, a one-stop retail site that provides dog and cat inspired apparel and accessories.

“As more people learn about the benefits of feeding their pets Paleo treats and healthier foods, they are embracing it,” says Ratner. “Not only do dogs love them, but their human companions won’t feel guilty feeding them the treats as they are all natural. It’s a win-win situation!” The Dog Paleo treats are made in the USA, are grain and gluten-free, and also do not contain soy, dairy, or corn. Flavors are Duck, Venison, and Salmon Bites, and they

support joint health, skin and coat health, digestive health, and more. Working from home allows Ratner to connect with his biggest passions in life: music, animals, and people. In some bizarre way, this business combines all three. Ratner’s greatest achievements to date are having the opportunity to be on HSN and to have his apparel line in Macy’s. His long-term goals are to continue doing what he has been doing only with four or five more dogs to add to the family. Visit idratherbewithmydog.net.

5 Things Great Leaders Do HOME OFFICE

Winning Behaviors And Attitudes In Leaders Who Succeed By Roxana Hewertson

re you a GREAT leader? How do you know? What would your staffers say? What would your own supervisor

say?

While there is a seemingly endless list of things to consider when asking yourself “How am I doing?” it’s prudent to specifically focus on your attitudes and behaviors. The following are 5 winning behaviors and attitudes that show up consistently in leaders who succeed. 5 THINGS *GREAT* LEADERS DO Read/understand own emotions and recognize the impact on self and others

It all begins with the amount of emotional self-awareness you demonstrate, which others around you use as a cue. By developing an accurate view of, and aptly managing, your own emotional responses to situations—and the ways in which you impact others’—the rest of your skills and talents will be duly magnified and leveraged. Great leaders know what pushes their buttons. They know where their passions lie. They know how to manage themselves and others in times of highstakes emotion, crisis, conflict, and when backs are to the wall. Great leaders know their impact on others matters regardless of intent.

“By developing an accurate view of, and aptly managing, your own emotional responses to situations—and the ways in which you impact others’—the rest of your skills and talents will be duly magnified and leveraged.” Great leaders also pay close attention to their impact, regularly seeking feedback so they may recover gracefully when their impact and intent are not in sync. Don’t Let These Financial Blunders Leave Your Wallet Empty

MONEY CORNER

To err is human, but when mistakes affect your pocketbook it’s not exactly divine. Don’t feel alone if you’ve committed a financial blunder. Two-thirds of Americans have made a significant money mistake somewhere along the way. People can go a long way toward financial stability if they avoid these common blunders:

Making a conscious effort to use cash will help wean you off your reliance on credit cards.

Living without a “net.” Bad things happen in life, even to the best people who are trying to do the right things. That’s why you need to set aside savings that will serve as an emergency fund in case you suddenly have major medical problems or lose your job. A six to 12-month cushion is recommended, that would cover your mortgage, groceries, utilities and the other necessities of day-to-day living.

Failing to check credit reports. More than 70 percent of credit reports contain some sort of error. Meanwhile, identity theft is on the rise. You should check your credit reports annually to make sure you are not a victim.

Giving little thought to retirement. Many people fail to properly prepare for retirement. If you think Social Security will take care of you, think again. Social Security is designed as supplemental income, not something that can replace your entire paycheck. You need to plan and save to make sure you can lead the lifestyle you want in your later years.

Racking up credit card debt. Credit seems to rule, but cash should be your real king. Americans are carrying more than $800 billion in credit card debt. Making a conscious effort to use cash will help wean you off your reliance on plastic. “If you are struggling with credit card debt, you need to start making a plan to get rid of that debt,” he says.

Seeking advice in the wrong places. Uncle Felix may mean well, but he’s not necessarily the ideal person to offer you advice on the stock market. A trained professional is your best bet. Sure, word-of-mouth can be helpful, but it can be equally hurtful. Before you pick someone to help you with investments, do your homework because you want someone with a good reputation. Check with the Better Business Bureau and do a Google search to see what else you can learn.

Trying to do too much, too quickly. Financial problems that took years to create aren’t going to be fixed overnight. Ease into your new financial plan. Instead of a dramatic overhaul that could leave you frustrated, try to make small changes that will lead to larger commitments.

Tips for Shifting to EMV Credit Cards Starting in October, retailers must accept EMV credit cards as part of a fraud liability shift in America. This means all of the coffee shops, startups and restaurants will have to acquire card readers, terminals and/or POS systems that accept EMV credit and debit cards. Mike Kehoe of Swift Pay Systems has five tips for small businesses before beginning the shift: ■

If you’re processing on your terminal or POS over a phone line, it’s a must that you switch to processing through an Ethernet line. The new EMV chips pass a lot of information, and transactions will take five times as long if processed over a phone line.

Ask your processor if your current machine can accept EMV cards. If so, ask them how to complete a transaction beginning on October 1. Dipping is the new swipe.

Even if your machine has EMV capabilities, it doesn’t mean your file is set up to accept EMV chips. Make sure your processor has built your file so you’re ready to go on October 1.

If your machine doesn’t have the capabilities to accept EMV chips, ask your payment provider if they can upgrade you for free, in exchange for your current terminal.

If your payment provider neglects to help you with any of the above and they don’t respond in a timely manner, it’s time to get a new provider to prevent fines after October 1.

Swift Pay Systems’ rates are a monthly fee plus a transaction fee with no contract lengths or hidden fees. Swift Pay is also able to lower Amex rates. Visit http://swiftpaysystems.com.

5 Common Financial Emergencies They Can Affect Your Home Business Without Warning By Jessica Kane

I

f you run a business from your home office, it could be vulnerable to a variety of common financial emergencies. This is because you may not have enough money to both pay your personal expenses and keep your business running at the same time. In a worst case scenario, you could actually lose your home if you are unable to pay your business debts. What are some of the financial issues that could lead to the end of your home business? You Lose a Major Source of Income If you lose a client who represented a large share of your income or you find out that you have lost a more traditional job that was your main source of income, you could find it impossible to pay your bills. The same is true if you find out that your spouse lost a job that provided the cash needed to pay personal or business expenses or perhaps both.

“Should you own a

home business, it may be worthwhile to get an insurance policy to protect you financially from a variety of events.”

savings are to be included for both of you in your retirement income plan. Perhaps it’s a second marriage for you or your spouse. It’s important for a financial advisor to look at your family’s unique situation and be comprehensive. 3. Consider your health situation: People have two major concerns going into retirement. The first is outliving their money. People may work for 30 or 40 years, but then have nearly that much time in retirement. The second concern is health care costs. YOUR MONEY, YOUR BUSINESS Take charge of your business’ finances in 2016, to achieve mental balance and family stability, and to grow your revenue. These money tactics will help you cut costs, start a business with limited resources, create a longterm budget, simplify your bookkeeping practices, and make financial choices that coincide with your personal values system. Key to keep in mind: Impulse shopping is a temporary antidote for the desire to attain more. Like that extra slice of red violet cake at Aunt June’s birthday soiree, your body won’t remain satisfied for long.

Ladies: How Money Wise Are You?

are clearly defined. When you get clear about what is most important to you in your financial life, you create a very good template to make decisions about potential opportunities, your money and your life.

I

t’s a perplexing situation. Women control half of the wealth in the United States, yet studies have shown that many of them are convinced they are lacking when it comes to understanding finances. Women should take stock of where they are, in terms of finances and confidence, so they know how to move forward. The following tips are offered: 1.

Uncover your money beliefs. Your attitude about money is important because what you believe determines where you are going. By exploring their views about money, women can challenge some of their limiting beliefs, become more confident, and take control of the situation.

2.

Clarify your financial life vision. One of the first steps to achieving your goals is to make sure they

Capture your financial snapshot. You need to write down just how much you spend each month for such expenses as your mortgage, car payments, electricity, cable TV, groceries and whatever other expenses you may have. Then you need to figure out your total monthly income and compare that to the expenses so you can see how much, if any, money you have left over to save, invest or use to pay down debt. Gathering this information gives you a picture of your current financial reality.

“What’s Possible?” Cancer Survivor Uses Marketing Skills to Become a Thriving Cause-Conscious CEO By Kern Communications

F

rom cancer survivor to thriving causeconscious CEO, Scott Petinga’s “what’s possible?” attitude makes him one of the top skyrocketing social-preneurs to watch. Petinga has whole-heartedly adopted a socially conscious business model for his various business endeavors, living up to his philosophy — born during his time in the Marines — that “nobody ever drowned in sweat!” This Petinga is proving with his insatiable drive to not just create societal change, but to BE that change, while concurrently succeeding in business. Like the late Steve Jobs, the status quo has never been good enough for Petinga. What Jobs has done with music and the phone, Petinga intends to do in the philanthropic space starting with three non-profits of his own. In addition to serving as Chairman and CEO of The Scott Petinga Group, which encompasses multiple business endeavors, Scott Petinga also founded the TH!NK DIFFERENT Foundation — A humanitarian

organization that provides grants and other program support designed to spark innovative ideas in underserved areas of housing and healthcare within the United States. Petinga also founded the Fairy Foundation, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to forging lasting memories for adults with life-threatening medical conditions. In addition, Petinga has founded Heels That Heal—a retail store that sells donated shoes to raise funds to support other top-rated, local charities. In addition, relating to his own battle with testicular cancer, Petinga is now collaborating on and funding several clinical trials with USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center — one of which is to better understand testicular cancer’s impact on male testosterone levels and fertility after surgery. After serving in the military and in roles as varied as Vice President of Segmentation Management at Santander Bank and Adjunct Professor at several regional colleges, Petinga

put his brilliant marketing skills to work. He served in several senior executive roles at advertising agencies, before leaving Madison Avenue in 2007 to launch his flagship company, the data-driven communications agency AKQURACY. Founded on the strength of a single client relationship, Petinga has since grown the company into a multi-million dollar marketing endeavor. Now as Chairman and CEO of The Scott Petinga Group, Petinga is a pioneer in developing businesses with lasting impact in the fields of communications, sustainable real estate, a business accelerator, and philanthropy. aura Anzevino was working in a multimedia studio when she decided to go into business for herself. She invented Sweet Roll, a hair curler that saves time without damaging hair. It met the main criteria: 1. Timesaver 2. Convenient 3. Demonstrates well 4. Large demographic 5. Low manufacturing cost. Prior experience in retail management, the music and movie industry paved the way for structure and creativity.

Home-based businesses can start out at a crawl when family members determine that the entrepreneur is available whenever they call. Once Laura convinced hers that the business was legitimate, strides began to happen. Time is a commodity, so time management is essential for her. “Going into business with family members can be a delicate balance, so creating quality time outside of the business is a must,” Laura says. Timing is also a consideration. It takes money to start, so it’s easier to find investors during a good economy. Laura created a website and utilizes Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine 54

Marketing to advertise. She wrote and produced a Direct Response TV commercial and aired it locally and nationally. Laura says, “A good product will self-promote by word of mouth.” Sweet Roll’s primary customers are women 22 to 55 years old. Laura likes to point out the advantages for men. They no longer have to wait long for their significant other to get ready. She chuckles as she fancies herself a relationship saver. Sweet Roll was released in 2012, and to date has sold to every state in America, as well as seven countries outside the US. Sweet Roll was featured in the Oscar Gift Bag and upon a chance purchase from supermodel Carol Alt, Laura was flown to New York to appear on A Healthy You & Carol Alt. Mompreneurs working from home can juggle daily chores and gas savings are significant. Laura also utilizes seasonal mall kiosks, because she finds it essential to establish a relationship with the locals.

Interview with Daniel Craig Continued from page 20

Q: What did you do to get in shape? DC: Nothing special, the usual exercising — working myself to death. No secret method involved, just sheer hard graft that I’m used to. Getting harder I will admit, but such is life.

“…with really good writing, the jokes will come. And it brings a lightness of touch, allowing the audience to laugh in between those moments of tension.” – Daniel Craig Q: James is getting old now? DC: He’s old now, 47 [laughs]. Q: How much longer can he keep going? 56

DC: As long as he’s physically able. Which isn’t that long [laughs] I’m contracted for one more which seems to be a fair number, but I’m not going to make predictions. Q: There was also comedy in Skyfall and I’m assuming you’ll follow a similar path in Spectre, is that something you’d like to pursue? DC: Not at all, not in any…again, I always wanted to bring the comedy back in but Mike Myers really screwed us. He took the best spy gags [laughs], but I always maintained with really good writing, the jokes will come. And it brings a lightness of touch, allowing the audience to laugh in between those moments of tension. Those are the funniest laughs, I think. Q: Have you ever felt trapped by Bond? DC: When Bond happened, I remember putting it to bed in my head and saying, ‘if this is the last thing I do in my career, then that would be OK’ because c’mon, it’s not that bad a role to have under your belt. But after Casino Royale, I did panic a little about people only seeing me a certain way, and I started thinking, ‘did I need to play someone totally opposite from Bond?’ But as time goes on, I’ve

need to do that. And that was the last thing on earth I wanted to do. Actually, it was the perfect timing because we had arrived at a moment where we had a lot to do, so this gave Sam the perfect opportunity to go away and look at the cut and do things. And it allowed me to go away, rest a bit, looked at the script and become useful again.

According to actor Daniel Craig, what he admires about Bond is “how he stands up against adversity because he’s one against many.”

relaxed out about that attitude. Q: What’s the greatest misconception about you? DC: I’m not strong and macho. It’s so funny that people have this image of me as the hard man when that’s really not me. Just an actor folks, it’s acting. www.homebusinessmag.com
