My stance on sustainable, energyefficient and ecofriendly design is well known, and I never tire of spreading the word about living a more sustainable life
I
’ve always held the view that great design can change our lives for the better, especially when it comes to architecture and interiors. I’ve been a designer for more than 30 years, and I’m still as passionate about the medium as ever. My stance on sustainable, energy-efficient and eco-friendly design is well known, and I never tire of spreading the word about living a more sustainable life. This issue, I’ve noticed a theme — not necessarily one that was created on purpose, but one that — because of the times in which we live — more and more designers are responding to. Sustainable design is now a growing trend, aiming to create projects and products that are beautiful, designed to respect the environment, and are created from renewable materials that are made to last. Our bedroom feature showcases gorgeous linen and accessories made from natural materials including linen, hemp, cotton and wool. Writer James Cleland explores natural materials in his Eco and For Him stories and our resident writer Holly Cunneen features products with raw finishes and unrefined materials in her Moodboard. Designers this issue include Mark Tuckey, Johan and Nia Neve and Jacqueline Fink — creatives whose products are made with beauty and integrity, which is great news for those of us wishing to live with authentic design. Most of us aim to create a home that’s beautiful to live in. But aside from the aesthetics, it’s the things we don’t see that are as important as those we do. Things such as the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) concealed in the paints, glues, dyes and joinery that may be lurking in our homes; things such as furniture made from questionable materials with an unknown provenance and materials which may be made with
chemicals impregnated into them to make them ‘wrinkle-free’ or colourfast. Even our mattresses can contain chemicals which may be harmful to our health, so it pays to shop wisely and enquire before you buy. The good news is there are many companies who supply high-quality, ethically produced, eco- and human-friendly products and materials. The challenge for consumers is to find them. My advice is to do your research. Ask questions about the origin, materials and manufacturing methods used. If your supplier can’t provide a suitable answer, maybe it’s time to purchase elsewhere? The more consumers demand quality products and materials that don’t damage their health and the environment, the more suppliers and manufacturers will be compelled to provide them. Enjoy this issue.

CONTRIBUTORS Trisha Croaker was five years old when she first fell in love with a building (a corrugated iron woolshed in country New South Wales) and about eight when she fell for a house (a modernist home perched on a harbour-side site in Sydney). This was the beginning of a lifelong interest in architecture, and in the creation of spaces offering shelter, prospect, refuge, joy and delight — and so much more. During the past 10 years, Trisha has successfully combined her 30-plus years’ experience as a journalist with her passion for architecture. As a freelance architecture writer and storyteller, she writes a weekly architecture column for Fairfax Media and regularly contributes architecture stories to specialist publications and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her motivation? To increase awareness of the social, cultural, emotional, physical and environmental value of good design.
Sabrina Treliving commenced her career with a degree in urban planning before launching her own global body care company. Venturing into styling and fashion editing, Sabrina has worked on a variety of magazines with some of the world’s leading designers. Clayton Cheng of Christian Dior Couture describes Sabrina as “incisive and always on-trend”, and says her “styling and editorial work reflect a keen eye for detail”, as can be seen in our beautiful bedding feature this issue.
James Cleland is a freelance writer and blogger with qualifications in 3D animation and special effects design, history, psychology, politics, philosophy and art. It is his wide interest in a number of subjects that prompted him to pursue a career in writing, exploring in greater depth many topics including architecture, sustainable design and home technology, and how they impact our lives. This issue, James covers design for men and the latest in eco furnishings.

vive la france What started as a French school project is now a thriving art hub for culturists around the globe Words Annabelle Cloros hotographs are quite simply a wonder of the modern world. The ability to capture a moment and visually consume it time and time again is something we never tire of. For most, displaying these works of art adds character to the home and reflects those who occupy the space. In 2009, Yellowkorner was introduced as a school project in France, which has since evolved to comprise 95 galleries spread across five continents in just six years. So who can we thank for bringing world-class photographers to our shores? Lifelong friends Cyril Catteau and Laurent Rabot share a common passion — photography. Travelling around the world together on photographic expeditions, the duo came across Yellowkorner during a European getaway, which would prove to be a life- and career-altering event. “Cyril is an engineer by trade and my background is in banking and property development,” says Laurent. “During a trip in 2012, we came across Yellowkorner and decided to bring it to Australia. Our first gallery was opened in Bondi Junction in October 2013.” Not just another print shop churning out masses of inferior pieces, each image on offer is reviewed by an artistic panel in Europe, that hand-picks every photograph in the catalogue to ensure the selection remains diverse and

balanced. “We work with some of the most talented artists in the world and we take a lot of pride in producing superb, quality prints,” says Laurent. “Yellowkorner works with more than 250 photographers representing all walks of life.” Boasting pieces from David Hamilton, Slim Aarons and Man Ray, the gallery offers more than 3500 photographs available in six
different formats and a range of finishes, too. With each gallery serving as a meeting place for members of the public and artists alike to exchange ideas, Yellowkorner is a point of difference in a consumer-driven market. Offering unique pieces that capture a broad array of subjects, there’s surely a piece for even the most discerning critics among us. HD facebook.com/ykaustralia

tuckey time Australian icon Mark Tuckey lives by the mantra ‘love what you do’, and the results really speak for themselves Words Annabelle Cloros ot many designers can say they’ve been a ski clothing model, a private investigator and a labourer — but Mark Tuckey can. With humble beginnings, the local creative sought to carve a career crafting environmentally friendly pieces that allowed him to use his head, his heart and his hands. “My background includes a little experience working in some creative pursuits and a few years designing and producing my own range of men’s clothing,” says Mark. After working as a PA to the owner of a busy furniture enterprise, Mark created his own business 25 years ago, starting his venture with just a couple of hundred dollars. “I bought all sorts of things from auctions and secondhand dealers and spent hours scouring the roadside and council tip-outs around wealthy Melbourne suburbs,” he says. Giving old pieces new life, Mark also produced a range of basic furniture pieces that he sold to retailers, with all profits going straight back into the business to fund his creative endeavour. About 15 years ago, Mark consolidated the business into one space with a large showroom and workshop in Fitzroy, with four additional locations mushrooming after that. Now living on Sydney’s Northern Beaches with his family, Mark is proud of his quintessentially Australian style that is present in each

and every piece the studio releases. “Our philosophy is, and always will be, to design and make things we love and want in our own home,” he says. “Our aim is to create furniture that has integrity, simplicity and strength — we design furniture to last.” Giving preferential treatment to timber, Mark sources this material sustainably, keeping with his aim of creating eco-friendly
furnishings. “A beautiful thing about solid timber furniture is that it takes advantage of natural features including grain and colouring. Each type of timber has its own distinct features, allowing each piece to be varied and unique. “My passion was, and still is, to always be involved in a creative process that is environmentally friendly,” continues Mark. “One of my main motivators is to get up every day and do something I love as opposed to doing something because it makes money.” And that’s a great way to live. class dismissed Johan and Nia Neve are The Assembly Co, a concept that unites creatives who share a common thread — good design Words Annabelle Cloros Photography Luisa Brimble graphic designer and a legal professional in their previous lives, Johan and Nia began their creative pursuit through a platform many of us use — Instagram. What started as a personal endeavour soon grew, with many fellow design lovers jumping on a bandwagon that shines the spotlight on the simple things. “Johan first trained as a graphic designer, but decided it wasn’t for him, so he retrained as a plumber,” says Nia. “I worked in the legal sector for a few years, but it wasn’t until I was on maternity leave that I really pursued a creative change. I started a lifestyle blog, spent a lot of time Instagramming and that’s when we both realised we had an audience that appreciated the same things we did.” Going on to launch The Assembly Co in September 2014, the online store features a range of homewares from global artisans as well as furniture made by Johan himself. “As creatives, we love the possibilities of the design process and watching our initial designs evolve through the beginning stages into the final product,” says Nia. From timber serving bowls and linen tea towels to desk lights and tables, these products all share one thing in common — quality. “We draw a lot of inspiration from designers who appreciate simple, clean aesthetics but also place an emphasis on practicality,” says Nia. “The

most popular design has been our Nelson desk light. We love this piece! Who doesn’t love a bit of copper around their home?” Taking the concept of The Assembly Co from online into the real world was a natural progression for Nia and Johan. They recently introduced The Assembly Gatherings, an opportunity for fellow creatives to enjoy a meal together that showcases the brand’s selection of products as well as some delectable delights — homewares, that is.
“Many are hungry for community,” says Johan. With a goal to open their own showroom and warehouse to host events in, Nia and Johan are on track to make a big impact on the local design scene. And Nia has a wise philosophy that helps steer The Assembly Co in the right direction: “Keep things simple and stick to the core values our business believes in.” HD theassemblyco.com.au

the quiet rebel Lawyer-turned-wool-master Jacqueline Fink isn’t afraid to think big — really, really big Words Annabelle Cloros Photography Aimee Thompson for The School and Megan Morton. Images from Extreme Knitting Workshops ragedy has spurred some of the greatest creations. It is during testing times that we are forced to look within and question our current path, determining if it’s time to veer to the left and try something new. For Jacqueline Fink, traumatic circumstances led to a booming voice within that told her to “knit big” after her mother underwent a life-saving double-lung transplant. And from this hardship sprung Little Dandelion. Daring not to question that career-altering voice, Jacqueline set out to investigate what ‘knitting big’ entailed. “At that point in my life, I didn’t have a great deal of knitting experience behind me and I certainly didn’t know much about wool, apart from a lifelong appreciation of its beauty and special properties,” says Jacqueline. Opting to work with unspun wool, Jacqueline never regretted her decision to use the

challenging material. “In 2010, no one else was working in this space — I was very much a lone wolf,” says Jacqueline. “No one in their right mind knits with unspun wool as it is essentially as delicate as fairy floss. I worked out very quickly that in order for a textile made from unspun wool to be commercial, it would need to be felted. So I went about the process of teaching myself how to felt the wool in order to give the made-up textile greater stability and robustness.” Launching her business in 2012, Little Dandelion has rapidly grown to encompass private and commercial commissions, and additional pieces are made to feed the company’s online store, ensuring there is minimal wastage in terms of locally sourced materials and personal labour, too. “Every piece is brought into existence because a customer wants it,” says Jacqueline. “I work from home so everything is made by hand — it’s just me and a huge set of sticks doing the best I can without a production line in sight.”
With a collection comprising cocooning throws, wall pieces and blankets along with other top-secret projects, Jacqueline is pioneering her sector of the design scene, teaching extreme knitting workshops locally and overseas. She has also introduced a new super-fine merino wool extreme knitting yarn dubbed K1S1 (Knit One Share One), which is already felted and enables users to forget about the foibles of unspun wool. “In all my dealings and creative outputs, I am governed by the following principles: honesty, simplicity, beauty and consideration.” And judging from these larger-than-life pieces, Jacqueline’s will to create for the individual is a battle that has long been won. designing a legacy Words Trisha Croaker e all know we will need to address myriad functional questions requiring solid, pragmatic answers when renovating or building. How many bathrooms do we need? What tapware do we buy? What bathroom tiles? And on it goes for the year or two of design and construction. While sometimes overwhelming, these are the less-significant, easy questions to deal with. The far tougher and more important questions — with longer-lasting, broader impact — are all too often overlooked, remaining unasked and unanswered. Among the critical questions, few seemingly ponder or discuss this one: what sort of legacy do you want to leave for yourself, your family, your community and the world? For many homeowners, legacy is synonymous with the narrow and most obvious dictionary definition — an economic legacy or windfall willed to recipients, either in the form of money, possessions or property. Given Australia’s ongoing housing affordability crisis, it’s not hard to understand this preoccupation. However, what of the broader context? Of the desire to leave an emotional legacy,

creating a family home filled with love and memories benefiting generations to come? What about an environmental legacy, such as the creation of a sustainable home positively impacting not just on your family, but the planet? Not to forget an intellectual and moral legacy of social and ethical values guiding you through all decisions, public and private. And equally important, an artistic legacy, inspiring and encouraging creativity and design excellence in others. All are worthy of consideration and contemplation before and during the design process in place of the common single-lens focus on resale and profit. After a decade of visiting and reviewing hundreds of houses, it’s heartening to meet those all-too-rare homeowners who’ve comprehensively analysed the legacy they hope to leave. Young Sydney architect
Jeremy Bull is one of them. As he worked to transform his dilapidated old terrace into a contemporary family home, Jeremy thought deeply about what he hoped to achieve. His answer is inspiring and thoughtprovoking. He resolved to gift a rare and wonderful legacy to his four infant children: the creation of a home designed to encourage the appreciation of extraordinary spaces. “We wanted to create a space that offered more possibilities than the mean average that allowed for an atypical experience,” he says. “We wanted to create memories and a sense of home and domesticity to give my kids a sense of a house that was outside the average.” With four children under the age of five, it must be connected to the garden, open but private. Almost nothing should be on a domestic scale, nothing should be Gyprock and almost nothing should be textureless. It must have the ability to “become a vehicle for exploration and memory” with a playfulness of texture, scale and pattern. It must include “significant amenity and equally significant aspirations”, be simple but sophisticated and a highly crafted piece of liveable, sustainable cabinetry. His aim was a home in which space, light, scale and texture are used not just to create the most inspired and inspiring warm family environment, but as a canvas for children to understand and appreciate aesthetics and the value of design. The benefits are both immediate (in ensuring a wonderful, enriched quality of life for his family) and long term (in ensuring his children understand the value of beauty, creativity, light, air, nature, design excellence, scale and the volumic generosity of spaces). What a wonderful example of truly thinking for the future and of others, creating a wonderful, positive legacy that will be valued, respected, honoured and passed on without doubt. It’s been said that it’s not what we leave for others that really matters, but what we leave in them that matters most. If we can design with that in mind, the world can only be a better place. So what sort of legacy will you leave? HD

When it comes to colour, this home boasts a varied — but largely primary — palette, from subtle greys and light blues to hits of matt orange and deep red found in the furnishings. “We used a wide range of materials and colours,” continues Gabriele. “Yellow glass for the kitchen partition, light blue and orange matt lacquer for the entrance doors, glossy green lacquer for the bedroom door, blackwood for the bedroom furniture, grey resin for the floors, and raw iron sheet for the pillar covering in the living room.” The main living area is a casual and relaxed space, with designer furniture, including Eero Saarinen’s Womb chair, injecting instant modernity and class into the room. Words Annabelle Cloros Photography Remco Photography rchitecture in the Sunshine State has come a long way — forget Asian-inspired interiors and cardboard cut-out designs, New Queenslanders are modern and sophisticated, drawing on sleek lines and the pristine environment to create a distinct style that’s unmistakably theirs. Jamison Architects was called upon to revamp a duplex from the ’80s that was practically pinned to the side of a hill, transforming the dated property into one that commands street presence.

Structurally, the home needed a rethink, considering an open carport was used as the entry to the property. Among other speedbumps, the residence failed to take advantage of the water views, which is a big no-no when such scenery is on offer. So what’s the solution? “The brief was to open up the existing living spaces to the incredible views that had been restricted by the raked ceiling and add a new upper level,” says architect Mark Jamison. With the new level set to include a master suite, lounge and covered deck area, the renovation also incorporated the creation of a new entrance with enclosed

With timber and glass staircases connecting all the levels together, the interior of the home is sublime. usy schedules mean sacrifice, typically in the form of the simple things like enjoying the sunlight, playing with the kids outside or simply breathing in some fresh air. Designing a home around the natural elements solves this dilemma, and is a clever way to utilise the outdoors and bring its essence inside the home. Aspect Designs created the concept of this Bella Vista, Sydney, home, which revolves around the idea of producing areas and levels that cater for informal and formal areas as well as indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces. “The brief was limited to accommodation requirements and to produce a lifestyle home centred around the water features of the pool and the koi ponds,” says Michael Sasso, principal designer and director of Aspect Designs. The pool is a standout feature of the project, with a landscaped and manicured area containing a pathway of stepping stones leading directly to the pool. An undercover spa area was also built for relaxation. Expansive windows allow the pool and garden area to be enjoyed throughout the year, with views available from all levels of the home. With the focus on a contemporary space, the home features primarily neutral tones, with accessories and materials like timber creating warmth. “The main challenge in creating contemporary homes is ensuring the homely atmosphere is maintained,” confirms Michael. Located in Sydney’s Inner West, the new residence was created by Starr Constructions for a family of five and offers space and luxury on tap. “The original home on the site was very old and ready to come down,” says director of Starr Constructions, Nino Sanzari. “We demolished the home and started with a blank canvas.” Beginning from scratch is not a luxury many are afforded, but with this fresh outlook comes the ability to create a dream house. “Our clients wanted a contemporary home with a feeling of warmth,” says Jon Vithoulka, director of Starr Constructions. “It was important the living space was large and connected to the kitchen with views of the pool and outdoor living area. It needed to be open and breezy with plenty of natural light shining through.” With five bedrooms and five bathrooms, a library, internal lift, mezzanine area, heated pool and gym, outdoor barbecue area and open-plan kitchen/living/dining space, this house strikes the ideal balance between a family home and an entertainer’s delight. year convenient and simple for the family. With views of the landscaped garden and pool, indoor–outdoor living is definitely enhanced in this residence. To boost space, high ceilings and long hallways were an important feature, ensuring all rooms exude a grand presence. “A major design consideration was to have plenty of glass to let in natural light,” says Nino. “Luxurious finishes and clean lines were also important, with shadowline cornices, square-set doors and windows, flush skirting and blade walls,” adds Jon. To up the luxe factor, marble flooring was used downstairs and in the upstairs bathrooms, radiating a rich atmosphere. Contrasting against the marble flooring, spotted gum was utilised upstairs, adding warmth and a point of difference to the bedroom level. Words Caroline Collett Photography Hervé Hôte n the heart of the French countryside near the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a London family has created a home away from home. The detached house and grounds remodelled by David Price Design feature a new extension, terraces and additions inspired by the rich colours of the Mediterranean. The traditional interior palette in this part of France has tended to be cooling white walls with colour introduced by the furniture and fittings, but this home’s new owners wanted to be a little more daring and contemporary in their treatment. “When we first bought the house, the rooms already had very individual colours,” says the owner. “While I loved the idea of colour, the palette was a little too pale and peachy for our taste, so we decided to be bolder and use jewel-like tones in the upstairs rooms to create a richer Mediterranean feel.” David Price was commissioned to help achieve the major remodelling of the property and grounds that would result in the idyllic holiday home the family now love to stay in, visiting as often as they can to get away from the stresses of city life. “It couldn’t be more different in look and feel to our London house, which is completely white on the inside,” says the owner. “The minute we arrive here, the accent is immediately on relaxation, entertaining and opening up the house to its natural surroundings.”

The original house was in a reasonable state when purchased, but not yet fit for purpose, necessitating the creation of a new space and the reorganisation of the landscaping and interior scheme. “We designed a two-storey extension, which was created using traditional masonry techniques so the house looks as if it was all built at the same time,” says David. “The big idea for the new space was to make the most of the morning sun in the east, with a new guest bedroom and TV room downstairs and a master suite upstairs. Externally, the ground floor has a gently arched window on its southern face, which opens directly onto the terraced area, while the first storey features a tall, thin rectangular window.” Once inside, the major works revolved around the creation of a completely new kitchen and back kitchen along with adjoining cloakroom and laundry room. The new kitchen features terracotta floor tiles and bespoke, painted timber furniture and Zellige tiling used around the cooker. “A lot of the accessories purchased for the kitchens were inspired by the garden and our immediate surroundings,” says the client. The house’s progression towards colour begins very gently in the extended kitchen, dining and living spaces with the odd feature wall, curtain, item of furniture or soft furnishing in colour. Large-scale artworks and interesting objects are used sparingly to add drama and include a series of old farming tools from the American Midwest left behind by the home’s previous owner, Dee.

Photography Patrick Redmond our house should be a reflection of your style, and there’s nothing better than coming home to a space that is truly yours. Working with Melbourne-based American interior architectural firm Toni Franchi Design, the husband and wife who call this unique space home created a design that is opulent, stylish, and a reflection of who they are. Toni was tasked with revamping the kitchen and living areas, which are generally considered the most important spaces within the home. Serving as the centrepiece of the design, the kitchen combines Talostone Statuario veined marble to create a signature look that’s modernised with stainless-steel accents. Duropal timber cabinetry in Walnut Lyon brings warmth into the kitchen, contrasting with the richness of the marble benchtop. “These finishes were chosen to work as beautiful display furnishings facing the family room,” says Toni. Due to the open nature of the design, kitchen appliances were selected for their chic look and quietness. A Fisher & Paykel Paris oven, Siemens cooktop and semi-integrated dishwashers, soft-close hardware and Oliveri stainless-steel sinks harmonise beautifully. Words Holly Cunneen he modern home is becoming increasingly tech savvy, and not solely for entertainment purposes. Convenience is a huge drawcard, too. Whether you’ve got a spare room by way of the basement or have a full house and hectic schedule, decking your house out with the latest tech solutions can create flow and make life more enjoyable. This existing 6.9m x 3.9m basement room in Sydney’s Bexley North was once an unloved junk room for a family of six. But it was always the homeowner and father’s dream to have a home cinema equivalent in sound and picture to that of a commercial one. Not only has Len Wallis Audio combined forces with builder/theatre designer Andrew Fenton of Trade A Management to turn this dream into a reality, but it’s big enough for the whole family to enjoy. To get the most out of the space, Andrew and Alberto Vangi from Len Wallis Audio removed the existing kitchenette and decided to rotate the room and change the entrance, still allowing for staged, comfortable seating. The new entryway maximises the usable space while still accommodating a large screen that takes into account viewing distance. Four false walls were created to soundproof the room, and the original doorway was converted into a cabinet for the equipment to be neatly stored. And in spite of the ingenius design, we just can’t get over the statement starlight ceiling!

we love THE IDEA THAT ONE APP CONTROLS EVERYTHING A home cinema certainly appeals to our indulgent side, but on the other end of the spectrum, smart home integration can make everyday life run so much more smoothly — and what’s not luxurious about that? On the other side of Sydney, this pre-existing home in Dover Heights had suffered some electrical damage and subsequently the audio and visual systems were both intermittently faulty. Extremely frustrated, the homeowners approached Len Wallis Audio and asked them to replace their existing lighting and audio-visual systems with entirely new ones. And given the pair both work from home, a strong wi-fi network was imperative. Without exception, successful projects start with an assessment. Once Jono Dorset and the team at Len Wallis Audio had the cabling mapped, they began to design a solution. A centralised system was adopted for the audio-visual requirements with a rack of equipment discreetly installed in the study, which houses the network, HD video distribution, audio distribution and Savant control system — almost all of the electronics utilised with minimal clutter throughout the home. The previous lighting system was replaced almost like-for-like with the Clipsal C-Bus system, which is known for its reliability. But it was the Ruckus networking equipment that blew the couple away; the speed and strength of the internet connection they now receive in every room of the house is the best they’ve ever experienced. Home automation can certainly seem like an intimidating choice, but the Savant system integrated in this home uses Apple-based control componentry and boasts an intuitive app that is available for both iOS and Android. It can be incredibly stressful for parents returning home after a non-stop day at work with three armloads of groceries hanging off two and trying to navigate kids. But by creating your own ‘scenes’ in

This enables art lovers to unearth original one-off artworks at affordable prices. “Because of my online sales, I have been able to set up my own studio and gallery and work as a full-time artist,” says Inverlochbased abstract artist Annette Spinks. “Bluethumb has given me national exposure and the opportunity to sell my art all over Australia.” In 2014, the Bluethumb Art Unearthed app was awarded Best Shopping App in the Australian Mobile & App Design Awards. The White Rabbit Gallery opened in 2009 to showcase what has become one of the world’s most significant collections of Chinese contemporary art. Dedicated to works made in the 21st century, the White Rabbit Collection is owned by Judith Neilson, who was inspired to establish it on
a 2001 trip to Beijing. She was thrilled by the creative energy and technical quality of the works she saw and wanted to share them with people outside China. She makes regular trips to China and Taiwan to add to the collection, and the gallery now boasts more than 1400 works by 500-plus artists. whiterabbitcollection.org

6 STEPHEN BAKER This Melbourne-based artist works from the Everfresh Studios in Collingwood, Victoria. In bars and cafés, Stephen Baker sits and sketches his physical surroundings and the stories they evoke. A feeling of escapism (in the filmic sense) permeates the work. Returning to the studio, Baker brings his sketches to life by reimagining them as a series of geometric shapes. He adds colour using a palette arranged from Pantone reference books. Each is mixed and matched by eye before being applied to canvas or board. “To me, these scenes come to life once the bold lines are applied, providing divisions between the colours,” he says. It’s an exacting process that results in an aesthetic that’s distinctive and familiar. stephenbakerart.com

W
ith a history in fine art dating back to 1985, director of United Artworks, Tony Romano, has been trading in art for more than 20 years, sourcing from local and international networks of artists, studios and suppliers. Promoting a diverse range of artworks, the company specialises in both bespoke items and the mass-produced. “We cater to a wide audience that demands quality products in both design and execution which represent tremendous value,” says Tony.

184 | HOME DESIGN
United Artworks differs from many galleries in that it targets a market driven by interior design trends. This means the range is everchanging to remain relevant. “We offer a wide and diverse range of hand-painted and printed artworks that are always fashion-forward,” says Tony. “What truly distinguishes us from other galleries is our ability to customise the size and colour of any artwork without changing prices or lead times.” While the range is generally bright and expressive, the minimalist trend in interiors has prompted a completely new collection that has become one of the widest ranges available online. “Like all creations, it is a wonderful process to be part of the initial concept through to the completed product,” says Tony. “It’s even more exciting when people engage with keen interest to purchase.” The team draw inspiration from colour and movement while maintaining a clear focus toward interior design. An important part of this is understanding which interiors will work best with each artwork. “The two elements must exist in harmony,” explains Tony. “Even when one appears to conflict with the other, the harmony comes from understanding balance and imbalance as the design scheme requires. It’s a delicate fusion.” United Artworks’ pool of artists is also constantly growing. “Most of our artists are young and upcoming,” says Tony. “This allows
us to purchase and develop artworks into final products that are relevant for both the design and value-conscious. We have always had a penchant for abstract expressionism and it’s perhaps what we do best,” says Tony. “From original artworks provided by our in-house art director in the USA, Julie Robertson, to the flowing free forms of Lanette Rose in Australia, we love colour and movement when it balances beautifully in harmony on the canvas.” While sustainability has been front of mind for the company, the desire to supply a quality product has somewhat constrained its efforts. “Typically, our frames need to be of a kiln-dried wooden material that allows for a proper and firm stretch without any kind of warping or distortion,” explains Tony. “Our frames are derived from managed resources and all certification is provided to ensure none of the materials comes from rainforests or any ecologically sensitive environments. Our canvas is also sourced from sustainable materials using unbleached and natural fibre.” In line with the minimalist trend, the team is loving more restrained colour palettes at present. “This has presented us with an opportunity to introduce new products and provided a change in direction for United Artworks that has seen us grow strongly, with the design community becoming our largest fan base.” So what’s in store for the future? “Our dream is to continue developing and creating with an open mind and, essentially, a blank canvas,” says Tony. “Every day presents a new opportunity as creation is truly born from nothing other than our freedoms of expression, and we should never allow that to be compromised.” unitedartworks.net

This retiree’s hobby has turned into the ultimate passion Photography Andre Bolgarow ull of life just like his paintings, there is certainly nothing dull about Graham Jones. After leaving school in year 11, he spent the next 23 years as a jack of all trades. He performed on television programs such as Bandstand, wrote for wine, architectural and housing publications and self-published an autobiography, No-One in Particular. “My wife Ella and I spent three years living in Germany working in hospitality for the US military before returning to Melbourne to manage a hotel in Toorak,” says Graham. company, Windsor Smith, and was national marketing manager for ODI, an international business consulting company. At the age of 40, Graham and his wife started Graham Jones Design, which, over the next 20 years, would receive more than 85 Victorian and national awards for designing contemporary residential buildings in Australia and overseas. After selling the company in 2006, Graham became design consultant to members of the Abu Dhabi (UAE) royal family. He specialised in the design of residential compounds and private
residences for brothers of the UAE president and held this position until retiring in 2014. “I loved drawing as a kid and attended art classes in year 10 and 11 at St Bede’s College in Melbourne, winning the school’s art prize in 1965,” recalls Graham. His parents couldn’t afford to send him to an art school so Graham didn’t pursue his talents any further. After a casual comment to his family in 2014, Graham received a gift voucher for art supplies for Father’s Day and later that year, an easel from his wife for Christmas. “In January 2015, I stood in front of a canvas for the first time since 1965,” says Graham. “I was transported to another place and developed an instant passion for what would become a retirement hobby. I now live, breathe and dream painting.” Choosing the “forgiving” medium of acrylic helped Graham reconnect with painting. “I just wanted to figure it out for myself, to find a technique and my own style while becoming a sponge and sucking up everything art-related around me.” While he describes his style as contemporary, Graham says he is still finding his mojo in the art world. “My first attempt at abstract was woeful,” says Graham. “I kind of fell into seascapes and landscapes unexpectedly and while painting a series on Outback Australia, my skills were really coming to the fore so I felt confident enough to try abstract painting again.” Graham began to experiment with new techniques during a month at his Bali home in 2015. “I took sand from the beach, filled balloons with paint and exploded them, flicking paint from here to kingdom come and had the absolute time

“I KIND OF FELL INTO SEASCAPES AND LANDSCAPES UNEXPECTEDLY AND WHILE PAINTING A SERIES ON OUTBACK AUSTRALIA, MY SKILLS WERE REALLY COMING TO THE FORE SO I FELT CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO TRY ABSTRACT PAINTING AGAIN” of my life,” he says. Completely energised by the experience, Graham received much acclaim for his paintings The Deep and The Deep — Coral Reef. “I believe this could be a direction I take in the future,” adds Graham. An avid traveller, the artist draws inspiration from the people he meets and the places he visits. “A recent meeting with Mangu Putra — considered Indonesia’s number-one artist — has left a lasting impression,” he says. “He is a humble and humane man who has changed my approach to painting, and life itself, during a twohour sojourn at his family home and studio in Bali.” Graham particularly enjoyed painting his
Australian Outback series, especially the colourful Red Earth. “The Deep is extra-special to me as well. I love painting monster canvases,” says Graham. “The techniques used in this piece provided me with so much freedom of expression.” While Graham worked with a more subdued and tonal colour palette as a designer, he is passionate about vibrant colours in his art. “My colourful paintings are really suited to this style of design as they tend not to fight against most colour schemes but add life and enhance the predominantly open-plan designs,” he explains. “I work closely with interior designers to create paintings that are in line with their chosen scheme, which often includes the choice of
framing to complement the decor.” While Graham has experienced success with his new career, he is still grounded. “Art belongs to the world, not just to the boffins who decide what is good and what is not,” he says. “If just one person likes my art, my mission as an artist is accomplished.” Though the art world has presented him with a fresh challenge, Graham has risen to the occasion. “It’s not my intention to be just another retiree who’s decided to take up painting,” he says. “My design career is behind me now so I’m able to paint for seven to eight hours almost every day while learning my craft and working on being the very best painter I can be.” HD grahamjonesdesign.com.au HOME DESIGN

coast to C OAST Words Holly Cunneen Photography Steve Ryan, Rix Photography hen renovating a kitchen, it’s common to feel frustrated by a lack of space and fearful of cramming too much into too little. But clever planning, forward thinking and good design tell another story, as this kitchen demonstrates. “We have achieved more than everyone expected with the existing space that was provided for us,” says Katia Slogrove, lead interior designer at Germancraft Cabinets. “If anything, the space has become bigger.” Some walls had to be removed to accommodate the client’s desire for a scullery and the same footprint had to be followed as the flooring couldn’t be replaced, but the end result was well worth the effort. When closed, the sliding door completely conceals the scullery, while the glossy white walls and 2-pack cabinets keep the space looking light and open. This was an important factor, considering the open-plan kitchen leads to the dining and living rooms. Situated on a water canal boasting envious views, the modern kitchen has a distinctly warm and inviting coastal feel. HD germancraft.com.au

Words Holly Cunneen Photography Steve Ryan, Rix Photography t’s always amazing to witness the big differences small changes can make. Apart from redirecting the existing plumbing through the kitchen, no major building works were required in this kitchen, and yet the end result feels and looks like a massive transformation that has brought this space from the late ’90s into the 21st century. With a client brief focused on “clean lines and minimalism with as many drawers as possible”, the appliance–pantry cupboard combination is just one visible example of stellar success. Every nook and cranny has been utilised as storage, neatly concealed by handle-free cabinets. It’s hard to imagine this kitchen succumbing to mess, which is important given the open plan leading directly into the living room. This is a timeless design that won’t need to be touched for years to come — simply kept on-trend with colourful accents and beautiful blooms. HD designerkitchens.com.au

T R O P I C A L DREAM HOME When Laz and Melissa decided to honeymoon in Australia, little did they realise they would still be enjoying Queensland’s tropical lifestyle 35 years later
A
fter arriving in Australia from the US, newlyweds Laz and Melissa set out from Melbourne to explore the east coast of Australia. By the time they reached Palm Cove in Queensland, they were smitten with the Aussie way of life. They settled in Northern Queensland for a number of years, but eventually relocated to the Gold Coast. A canal-front lifestyle beckoned, and after some initial trial and error attempts to find a builder who could relate to their vision, they were introduced to Jim Taylor from Unique Homes. Jim specialises in building custom-designed luxury homes and, with the clients working in close consultation with his in-house design team, developed a floor plan that suited them perfectly. The home is approached via a paved bridge bordered either side by a tranquil pond. A water feature and 1200mm-wide pivoted front door add grandeur to the entry. The grand entry foyer with its semi-circular

staircase leading to the upper level is immediately impressive. The curve of the staircase continues through to the curved floor and balustrading of the upper level. A ground-floor guest room, complete with its own ensuite, has sliding doors leading to a private courtyard with a well-equipped media room adjoining the space. However, the feeling of grandeur is best experienced when entering the living area. This vast space, with its high-quality porcelain tile floor, includes the formal lounge and dining area, family room, informal meals spot and magnificent gourmet kitchen. A large butler’s kitchen and pantry adjoin the kitchen, making formal entertaining a pleasure. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls facing the pool and spa area provide expansive views of nearby islands and canals from virtually all the living spaces. Upstairs, the curved glass wall at the end of a grand gallery also provides stunning water views. Recessed niches in the gallery wall are a perfect place to showcase small pieces of art and treasured possessions. Double doors at the end of the gallery open to reveal a huge master bedroom complemented by its own Hollywood-style luxury bathroom. Beside this is a very spacious walk-in dressing room, fully fitted with ample storage shelving and hanging space. Sliding glass doors open from the master bedroom onto a spacious cantilevered balcony, which enjoys similar water views to those of the floor below. A third bedroom, also with its own ensuite and walk-in robe, together with a well-appointed study, completes the upper-floor accommodation. In his early days, Laz trained as an architect in Austria. He says the build quality and engineering excellence incorporated in this home equals anything he has ever seen in the many countries in which he has lived and worked. he owner wanted to completely renovate the house, resulting in a stunning kitchen that is a modern design statement and the central hub of the home. The ability of this space to transform from a welcoming, entertaining hub during the day to party central at night makes it a prime example of luxury, diversity and versatility. Regularly catering for up to 15 guests on a weekly basis, the owner required a larger-than-normal oven and wanted to be able to stay connected with guests while cooking. The Caesarstone table with LED backlit illumination is the hero of the space and an amazing visual centrepiece. The kitchen can now transform to fit any mood, no matter the occasion. The large integrated oven provides the efficiency needed for entertaining, but does not interrupt the flow of the kitchen. A vertical garden brings the outdoors in, while a built-in outdoor barbecue with integrated seating, using similar colours and materials as the kitchen, gives the overall space continuity and flow. A BLAZE
of glory Words Annabelle Cloros s the heart of the home, it’s always sad to see a kitchen that’s struggling to keep up with the rest of the house. Sure, it’s a lot easier to change a few cushions and add a lick of paint here and there, but it’s essential not to neglect the one room every member of the family is guaranteed to use. Shaynna Blaze decided to work with Granite Transformations to bring new life into her 20-year-old kitchen which was headed straight towards a quarter-life crisis. With all the surfaces beginning to peel away, a wobbly island bench and outdated appliances, an update was clearly needed. “The kitchen needed to make better use of the space with extra storage, a larger island bench and integrated laundry

and integrated laundry facilities,” says Shaynna. With a revamp on her hands, it was essential the new-look kitchen worked with the Victorian-era structure. “It had to be visually sympathetic to the building, but also provide modern appliances,” says Shaynna. To ensure cohesiveness, detail was added to the cabinetry which reflects the timeless cornices and architraves. “The cornices and architraves are extremely deep at 300mm high, so I wanted to make sure I included some detailing that reflected the original period details,” says Shaynna. After a body of work including bracing walls, moving plumbing and installing a 1500mm island bench was completed, the kitchen’s functionality was improved tenfold. “The kitchen is to be used for professional chefs as well as everyday cooking and work for large groups and entertaining, so it’s important it is fully functional,” says Shaynna. Opting for a generously sized bench means it has multiple purposes, from being used as a breakfast bar to preparing and cooking food as well as housing appliances — including a wine fridge, dishwasher, sink, storage and power points for appliances. In terms of the aesthetic, the space has been well and truly modernised. A gold-tiled splashback adds a glamorous touch that is balanced by the grey cabinetry. “I love that the tiles take on different colours during the

day and evening, giving a different look to the kitchen and providing incredible mood,” says Shaynna. Another special feature of the kitchen is the appliances, where no cost was spared. Boasting three ovens (steam/combo, convection and microwave), all appliances were chosen according to the highest star rating possible including the fridges, dishwasher and laundry appliances. “You can have three ovens going at the same time as
well as cooking on the benchtop and doing your washer — an incredibly hard-working kitchen,” admits Shaynna. The end result really does speak for itself. With the focus on the island bench with its colonial panels, the kitchen is a hub that seamlessly blends in with the property’s aesthetic, but is now the best room in the house by far. he owners were after a Hamptons-style kitchen, but wanted to add their own individual flair. Maximising space and storage as much as possible was essential to maintaining an open feel, which the butler’s pantry facilitated. The large island bench is the focal point of the kitchen, and with a beautiful, glossy Caesarstone benchtop, it is perfect for socialising and meals. The neutral colour palette is fresh and inviting and opens up the kitchen. The space is fully functional and practical for everyday living, and the high-quality cabinetry and integrated appliances speak for themselves. This kitchen adds a touch of elegance and complements the newly built residence in a surrounding rural area. It is now the heart of the home and a space you can truly appreciate. Words Annabelle Cloros Photography Martina Gemmola iving a greener existence is playing an increasing role in many segments of life, from the design of our homes to the materials utilised to create them. Melbourne-based Cantilever Interiors is a company that prioritises eco considerations when creating spaces for clients, producing stunning results that don’t skip on the details. Dubbed the K2, this eco kitchen was created from multiple sources. “A lot of the design ideas at Cantilever come quite organically,” says founder Travis Dean. “We knew we wanted to design a kitchen with sound environmental credentials that didn’t look like a typical ‘eco’ kitchen — high on philosophy, low on design detail.” Featuring PEFC-certified blackbutt and plywood alongside a recycled stone benchtop, this space revolves around a neutral Australiana palette inspired by the landscape. A hint of sky blue in the overhead cabinetry offers a point of difference for a kitchen, introducing an on-trend hue that appeals to design connoisseurs. But for those who prefer a more neutral look, the 2-pack can be easily repainted. There’s also plenty of storage integrated in this design, which is essential in kitchens. Exposed and concealed areas provide the opportunity to display statement ceramics and crockery. “K2’s design details, such as the shadow lines, precision joinery and choice of natural materials and colours appeal to customers who appreciate design,” says Travis. Filling the gap in the market for architecturally designed kitchens for a fair price point, the K2 is evidence you can consider the environment in a very stylish and affordable way. ynnstay House is home to architects Rob McBride and Debbie Ryan of McBride Charles Ryan, and has painstakingly been built by the couple over a number of years. They ensured every detail is precise and in context with the rest of the home. The kitchen is the latest addition, and Corian was selected because it is malleable and robust. Matching the water theme of the interior, the island bench alludes to an iceberg. Corian integrated perfectly with the interior of the house, lending practicality and longevity. “The kitchen joinery unit is essentially a

carcass enveloped with formed Corian,” says Debbie. “We waited a long time for our bench because Rob and I had to agree on what we wanted, then we had to wait until we could afford it. The kitchen bench is in an open-plan living/dining area and it was important to us that it looked like ‘something’. “Kitchen joinery units are nearly always one of the most used areas of a house. We wanted a kitchen that was permanent and could withstand the rough and tumble of family life. Corian was the obvious choice. We have used it on many projects and we know it performs extremely well. We wanted a kitchen
joinery unit that was seamless and one singular form. Corian was the only material we could think of that would achieve this. “We had already established a theme around the elements — earth, water, wind and fire. Water is represented and physical — the kitchen is only separated by glass from the pool. The ceiling is like when you throw a pebble into a pond with radiating ripples and our Glacier White Corian bench is the iceberg. “One of our greatest difficulties was finding a fabricator willing to take on this risky project. We were very relieved when Clinton Buckwell from Individual Design and Construction took on the challenge. He was very enthusiastic about the project and after one meeting told us he did not want to fabricate the bench the way we had drawn it. Essentially we drew it in laser-cut layered sections which were to be stacked, glued and sanded. He said it would look the same but he wanted to ‘thermo-mould’ it. We agreed on the process and were very excited during our first visit to his workshop where we witnessed the bench well on the way to being formed. “The other difficulty was getting the kitchen into the house in one piece. It took seven big blokes to move the unit into place, with only one small crack on a seam in the move. The beauty of Corian is that this could be easily fixed.” Designers Debbie Ryan and Rob McBride. mcbridecharlesryan.com.au Fabrication Clinton Buckwell. individual.net.au

his beautiful, relaxing ensuite bathroom was part of a newly built extension on a Victorian-era home. The owners wanted a wet-area-style space that brought in lots of natural light and was a relaxing haven. Two skylights at either end of the bathroom were installed to let in natural light, placing one directly above the bath to create the luxurious experience of seeing the sky while bathing. The freestanding bath was placed on a raised platform in an open, wet-style shower that is easy to use and has a clever recessed niche for storage. The beauty of this space is also highlighted in the deluxe tiled feature wall that reaches to the skylight — a striking design feature of the room. Marble wall tiles provide the perfect canvas in which to frame the fixtures — the natural variations in the veining are a sublime backdrop to the classic symmetry of the vanity and adjacent windows. Both the toilet and vanity are hung from the wall to open up the area as much as possible. Even the bathtub, which is fixed to the floor, was selected as the base gives the illusion of suspension. Andrea No matter the season, consumers always love using colour to create a contemporary look and feel. Colour in cushions, rugs and window furnishings added to organic and natural backgrounds gives your home a seasonal lift while still allowing an earthy, comfortable feel. result, motorisation is being used more as the size of windows increases. Motorisation is also becoming more affordable and will continue to increase as tech-savvy consumers use smartphones and tablets to control their window furnishings. The use of sheer fabrics is always a popular choice as they allow you to maintain the spectacular view outside. Twin pleated blinds are often the best solution as they are practical. Home Design What should buyers look for when purchasing window treatments? Andrea Sustainability has become one of the most important considerations for homeowners, architects and designers. Metallised blind fabrics are an effective solution for energy savings and solar control. They provide excellent view-through and glare control, independent of the colour of the blind fabric. Up to 40 per cent of heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter occurs due to uncovered windows. Metallised fabrics help keep the heat outside in summer and heat loss is reduced in winter, resulting in considerable energy savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions as it reduces the need for air-conditioning and heating. In terms of functionality, selecting the right
Verosol pleated blinds. verosol.com.au window covering for your specific needs can be difficult, however there’s a wide range of solutions suitable for every window. Pleated blinds are the most versatile solution, with an array of shapes and orientations available. From triangles to circles, skylights and conservatories, no situation is too challenging. When deciding between sheer fabrics for unobscured viewthrough or block-out fabrics for privacy, twin blinds offer a solution to both. Twin pleated blinds and twin roller blinds are practical for both day and night use. By using a sheer fabric, you can enjoy your daytime view and you will achieve room darkening and insulation at night with a block-out fabric.

HOME DESIGN TALKS WITH JENNY BROWN, LUXAFLEX’S WINDOW FASHIONS NATIONAL MARKETING MANAGER Home Design What’s of key importance when purchasing window treatments? Jenny Colour, orientation, privacy and the homeowner’s specific requirements when it comes to their home’s layout and style are all important when choosing window coverings. With so many options on the market, speaking with a specialist will help you make the best decision to suit your home, style and budget. A consultation can be extremely beneficial to better understand the wide variety of products and fabrics that might suit your lifestyle and needs. Homeowners should also consider the orientation of their home when selecting blinds. The amount of heat received by a
window may be a strong factor in choosing the right blind. You may require products that provide excellent heat and glare control for windows that get a lot of sun exposure, or blinds that trap air and act as insulation for the hot and cold months of the year, controlling the temperature and making significant energy savings. It’s important to custom make your blinds or shutters for the perfect fit, ensuring the smallest gap possible between the window and the blind. Choosing genuine blinds also means one manufacturer is responsible. Check if your blinds have a reputable warranty and end-toend service before buying.

This new technology gives a clarity that has not been possible in interiors, opening up a world of possibility for new looks in interiors.

Soft drape fabrics (also referred to as triple weave) are increasing in popularity. These fabrics are great for residential applications due to the soft hang and dim-out properties. These fabrics can be used without a lining for 90 per cent block-out or with a lining attached to give complete light control. We always recommend using lining due to the extra life it adds to your fabrics. Home Design What should buyers consider when purchasing window treatments? Kylie Your first consideration is colour or
design to match your interior requirements. Do you want a curtain on its own or will you be adding a sheer for an elegant addition to your decor? You then need to work out the appropriate quality. Because your windows control the heat and cold that is let into your home, any coverings need to be able to withstand the harsh Australian climate. Curtain lining is essential to ensure the fabric is protected and to increase its lifespan. Lining also helps insulate your home by limiting heat escaping in winter and entering in summer.

utdoor blinds have become increasingly popular as homeowners look to extend their living space. “By adding outdoor blinds to your existing pergola or patio area, you can create a whole new room,” says Australian Outdoor Living’s chief executive officer, Chris Taylor. “More homeowners want to extend the amount of time during the year they can use their outdoor living spaces.” Australians look forward to summer nights and the opportunity to entertain in the great outdoors. Good-quality outdoor blinds allow you to enjoy this lifestyle year-round, not just over the summer months. Imagine openair spaces filled with light and unrestricted views, while providing privacy and protection from wind and strong sun. “For unobstructed beautiful views, clear or tinted café blinds are the perfect choice,” says Chris. “If privacy is needed, shade blinds are the ideal solution. It pays to invest in outdoor blinds manufactured in Australia from high-end components with strict quality control expectations. The addition of exterior blinds will not only enhance your lifestyle, but improve the look of your home.”

Simon The biggest on-trend window cover is ‘external’ window coverings such as folding-arm awnings or exterior straight-drop roller blinds to stop the heat and glare before it gets a chance to get inside the internal window covering. Exterior shading cuts up to 80 per cent of heat before it even gets to the glass, let alone inside where your airconditioning is going to have to work overtime to keep your home cool.

TOP-NOTCH TERRACE
Words Annabelle Cloros Photography Tim Turner hen you’re on The Block, there’s no time to mess around. Impending deadlines constantly loom and creating picture-perfect spaces in short periods of time can be near impossible for seasoned and unseasoned renovators alike. For All Stars Dea and Darren, calling in the help of veteran landscaping guru David Franklin was a must to ensure their outdoor terrace sat high and mighty above the rest, ultimately putting them at the top of the leader board with a perfect score of 30 out of 30. Originally a dead zone, Dea and Darren’s designated terrace area comprised leftover concrete space between the rear of the building and the back fence. Saving $25,000 to complete the terrace overhaul, the team sought to create an area that maximised the space of the rear small courtyard while blending indoors and out, ensuring lots of light and fluidity between both areas. “The space is very enclosed and only visible from the rear of the apartments, so we wanted to create a very private sanctuary within an area that’s surrounded by other apartment buildings,” says David. Due to the narrow terrace, it was important to break up the space and encompass multiple functions, including a barbecue area, sitting area with outdoor lounge, and synthetic turf space to enjoy the morning sun. “Timber and plants were used to maximum effect to make
W

the space feel lush and cosy,” says David. “Paving and synthetic turf delineated the areas for relaxing and entertaining, and we worked with existing trees to ensure there were shady aspects that allowed light to stream into the living areas of the apartment.” Cycads and palms were used around the base of the large tree at the back of the space and across the back fence, along with feature pots and plants that would create intimacy and a sense of relaxation. Access to the site was problematic as the landscaping team had to share entryways with other trades and, of course, a camera crew. “Access was impossible; materials were brought in through the apartment but because it was also being fully renovated, we were able to work around the building works,” says David. Timber decking was also installed to extend the indoors outside and leads to the built-in outdoor lounge and entertaining space. And true to Dea’s talents as the interiors queen, the connection between internal and external areas is evident with the selection of quality materials, including leaf motif cushions, a mixture of materials and a rustic timber table surrounded by colourful stools and planters. With Neale Whitaker describing the space as “total luxury”, it’s clear why this terrace received the perfect score. From its multipurpose areas that are clearly laid out, this really is a little slice of heaven in an innercity location. HD

eauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but the stomach is certainly the way to one’s heart, so make sure you’re well equipped with the latest tools for alfresco cooking. For those working in an intimate space, it’s essential to work out what you need and what you don’t. Then look at compact models and dual-purpose pieces.
Alternatively, if you’ve got a big backyard with space for an alfresco kitchen, it’s equally important to make sure you don’t fill up the space unnecessarily with things you don’t need. Most importantly, don’t forget to think about what you enjoy cooking, because at the end of the day, nothing tastes better than food made with love.
1 The Morsø Forno is a stylish alternative to many outdoor ovens. Enjoy the endless alfresco cooking opportunities it provides as it’s suitable for making pizza, bread and other more traditional barbecue foods. And when the cooler evenings arrive, the Forno doubles as a fireplace. castworks.com.au 2 ILVE recently released the innovative, sleek and space-saving MY-Q BBQ. hen mapping out the process of any project, you need to start with the basics. In the case of outdoor living, it might be wise to think about how many people you’ll want to have over at one time and how many you’ll realistically be able to accommodate. Make sure the furniture and decor are adequately suited to the space. Don’t leave empty areas in a sprawling backyard and certainly don’t cram an eight-piece table setting into an intimate courtyard. Similarly, what goes on the table should be considered with equal measure. “Complement the outdoor setting and fresh produce with appetising colours,” says MaryAnne Fesq, marketing manager of Villeroy & Boch Australia. “Equip the table with a mix of platters, plates, deep dishes and bowls in a range of colours and patterns.”
1 The new Ultimate BBQ collection from Villeroy & Boch is a classic collection of plates, platters and accessories to serve up premium cuts of meat, grilled vegetables, skewers, sides and desserts. When it comes to crockery, keep it consistent. villeroy-boch.com.au 2 It’s easy to be smart with space when you’ve got space-saving options such as this set-up. The Applaro Gateleg table for walls can be folded flush when not in use. The matching wall panel, shown here with two shelves, provides added storage while the complementary chairs create a cohesive look. ikea.com.au 3 The Nusa Dua round outdoor dining table features an ultra-modern design as well as the finest-grade certified plantation teak available. The lazy Susan in the centre of the table not only adds to the modern edge, but delivers on practicality, too. balirepublic.com.au 4 If you’ve got the space for it, elongated tables such as the Rustic Industrial outdoor teak table are perfect for having the extended family over for lazy weekend lunches and balmy summer evening dinners. baygallery.com.au

t’s hard to imagine anything better than an afternoon in the sun, especially when it’s in the comfort of your own backyard. Whether you’re entertaining friends and family or soaking up the sun on your own, you want to do it in a comfortable, casual setting. Such is the advice of Escape to Paradise designer Sacha Alagich. “Enjoying your outdoor space is all about being able to relax in the oasis you have created,” she says. “The best way to achieve this is by including a variety of seating options.” A distinct lounge setting immediately creates a separate and more relaxing space for guests to spend time in. And when you’re not entertaining, you can enjoy it as your own private oasis — just don’t forget to add a few decorations such as pots, planters, sculptures and dividers to give it a personal touch. Accent cushions (below) are a great way to instantly update outdoor spaces and incorporate new trends without breaking the bank or embarking on lengthy renovations. The Palm Trees range of outdoor cushions from Escape to Paradise are bright, colourful, fun, and will add a definite resort feel to their surrounds.

OVERALL WINNER AND LENDLEASE OFFICE (LARGE) WINNER: GOOGLE HEAD OFFICE, SOUTH AFRICA, BY BOOGERTMAN + PARTNERS, SOUTH AFRICA This was a well-thought-out sustainable project inspired by the contextual fabric of Johannesburg. Jeans were collected from staff members to create the upholstery, furniture was made of recycled/upcycled items such as old wheelbarrows that were converted into stools, and 7500 recycled magazines were used as cladding in the waiting nook. The commitment to using ethical products from the surrounding community and sustainable products is a wonderful approach that educates others in the possibilities of being sustainable while designing an office. The Google South Africa project boasts an accreditation of both a 5-Star Green Star rating, as well as Gold LEED certification. The project created a platform for questioning the standard approach to green design by reinterpreting the necessities of a workplace setting, aligning the requirements with the city context and attending to the needs of the specific users. Views, visual comfort, internal air quality, ergonomics, waste monitoring and recycling initiatives, daylight harvesting and energy efficiency were developed in a way to be conducive to a comfortable work environment.

RESIDENTIAL — RENOVATION COMMENDATION: SLOT HOUSE BY SSD STUDIO, AUSTRALIA
RESIDENTIAL — RENOVATION WINNER: JILL’S HOUSE BY GREEN SHEEP COLLECTIVE, ESD FILTERS AND EXCELSIOR MASTER BUILDERS AND ENGDEV, AUSTRALIA Jill’s House is a very personal and individual renovation that loses no personality in its quest to be sustainable. How wonderful to see a renovation that considers the environment and longevity of the home. Green Sheep Collective’s philosophy is to approach design from an environmental, ethical, sustainable and community-minded perspective, and its goal is to create liveable homes with long-term benefits. The design converted a cold, poorly lit and damp terrace house into a comfortable, functional and beautiful home. Connections with garden spaces are improved and passive solar design enhances the feel and comfort of the house. The creation of positive, adaptable spaces that people want to be in relates to forming a sense of overall wellbeing which, in itself, contributes to the sustainability and longevity of the design.
The Slot House is a beautiful renovation that has been carried out with modesty in mind and lots of inspiration. The project, a California bungalow in Brighton Le Sands, evolved from the desire to breathe new life into a character-filled home while creating generous, light-filled living spaces that opened up to the rear garden. The design is underpinned by innovation and excellence in terms of environmental sustainability by doing more with less — spatially and materially. New-strand woven bamboo floorboards were selected. The bamboo flooring is manufactured using only the finest eco-friendly binding adhesives that have the world’s lowest VOC emissions rating. All fixtures and fittings were selected for their optimal water-saving capacity and scrap lights are handcrafted from recycled cardboard. This environmentally friendly and ethical home creates a beautiful, peaceful retreat for the family.
RESIDENTIAL — NEW BUILD WINNER: CARBON POSITIVE HOUSE BY ARCHIBLOX, AUSTRALIA The Carbon Positive House incorporates carbonneutral materials, including glues and paints that are soy-based and formaldehyde-free, creating a healthy building. Plant-based paints with no VOCs were used to contribute to higher air quality with no off-gassing materials. The Carbon Positive House was created to free us from conservative building structures and make significant contributions to society by creating this prefabricated model. Developed and created through innovative design sensitivities and new technologies, the Carbon Positive House moves beyond carbon zero by making additional positive contributions, producing more energy on-site than the building requires. Each element of the Carbon Positive House was carefully considered during the design process as to how it can function more sustainably. The holistic approach which involves the consideration of materials, construction methods, passive design techniques, renewable energy and landscape design creates an ultra-sustainable modular home.

INTERNAT I ON A L GR E E N I N T E RI OR AWA RDS RETAIL WINNER: V-ZUG AUSTRALIA MELBOURNE ZUGORAMA, V-ZUG AUSTRALIA The commitment to reducing the energy output in V-ZUG’s products aligns with a company that helped make the V-ZUG showroom sustainable. This is an excellent example of how a retail showroom can integrate green interior products. V-ZUG’s awareness of its responsibility and technological expertise make it a leader in the industry when it comes to ecology. All the floors and wall materials used in V-ZUG’s Melbourne ZUGORAMA showroom were supplied by Admonter, an Austrian company producing sustainable products including timber floors and acoustic panels. This space is environmental and stylish.
HOSPITALITY WINNER: MAMASAN SURRY HILLS BY ADAM HUNT AND GEMMA LIN, AUSTRALIA The way they have used recycled timber and local knick-knacks is creative and fun. By using recycled building materials and furniture, this fitout proves reused materials can be used elegantly. The use of a dead gum tree to decorate the walls is very creative. This amazing space is filled with products that were found or bought second hand, creating a cool and funky place to eat and drink. The upstairs section was drenched in natural light so a 4-metre-high Japanese maple tree was put in under the skylight and a table built around it using a recycled wooden pallet that seats 15 people. At the base of the tree is a succulent garden and above, a shower rose protrudes from the roof to water the tree. Another amazing upcycled creation is the sashimi bar made from an 80-year-old wooden dinghy which was abandoned in Pittwater.
HOSPITALITY COMMENDATION: THE PUBLIC BREWERY BY BEKENDALES DESIGN CO., AUSTRALIA An old dilapidated shed — once the local area’s feed and grain store — was the perfect start to creating the Public Brewery. The owners were committed to the idea of using recycled and refurbished materials wherever possible for the fitout of the venue. The design of the interior was an organic process. They worked backwards using what they found, rather than deciding on a design and having things made from

plans. Although the focus on using recycled and reclaimed materials was always the driving force behind their choices of materials and pieces, they remained focused on the final objective: creating a venue that would welcome and service customers from a wide-ranging demographic. They wanted a venue where the customers would not know, unless they were told, that the majority of the fitout has been sourced second hand. The Public Brewery is the perfect example of how using recycled and reclaimed materials can result in a polished and sophisticated venue.
KE-ZU EDUCATION WINNER: TED CONFERENCE IN CANADA BY ROCKWELL GROUP, USA The kit-of-parts shows great use of modularity, especially with 16 different seating options. The concept of reusing the full theatre and being fairly easy to install shows great planning/design for a green product. The portable, kit-ofparts theatre can be easily transported, quickly built and dismantled, and stored off-site until the following year. It has been constructed from thousands of CNC-milled pieces, made from locally harvested Douglas fir and due to this glulam construction it has the ability to minimise vibration and noise that might affect webcast filming. An amazing example of a product that has the ability to be reused many times over, reducing the impact on the environment and being truly sustainable.
KE-ZU EDUCATION COMMENDATION: MELBOURNE ART BOOK FAIR BY TOBIAS HORROCKS FROM FOLD THEORY, AUSTRALIA The inaugural Melbourne Art Book Fair was built from recyclable cardboard and reusable netting. It arrived flatpacked and was assembled by mostly unskilled labour without the use of power tools, showing the ease of the structure and its sustainability essence. The temporary space had to perform different functions and accommodate the diverse needs of 40 exhibitors. The walls featured adjustable shelving, which could be manipulated, and the panels could also be arranged as three-sided signage totems. The walls of the informal lecture theatre were assembled differently to allow more visual permeability. The production of the furniture took place in Mordialloc, Victoria and is an exemplar of sustainability in the temporary event design industry. Cardboard is an ideal but underutilised solution where functional and promotional structures need to be mobile and transportable. Engineered intelligently, it can be extremely strong, as evidenced by the tables that took the weight of many books and the stools which withstand 200kg.
AUSTRALIAN LIVING HEALTHCARE WINNER: FRESH HOLISTIC HEALTH BY LUKE AND MEGAN BELL AND CABROTO, AUSTRALIA This is a space which is healthy and nontoxic that takes the client and the workers into consideration. A strong focus is placed on the environment both within and surrounding the practice. In order to fulfil the desire for environmental stewardship, Fresh Holistic Health set about incorporating new products as well as tried and tested methods to minimise the impact of the building through the construction stage, the life of the space and the eventual repurposing of the materials. The Brisbane office fitout was a holistic approach as they considered their employees by creating best-in-class health and wellbeing initiatives. An example of this is the sit-to-stand opportunities that are located
LENDLEASE OFFICE (SMALL) WINNER: STEELCASE WORKLIFE BY SUPERKÜL, CANADA Steelcase Toronto WorkLife is LEED-Commercial Interiors Gold certified and has amazing detail and commitment to sustainability while maintaining a beautiful, modern office. The new showroom reflects Steelcase’s ongoing research into the workplace of the future. The showroom, which is also the sales team’s workspace, can be reconfigured to accommodate large-scale training sessions. There is colour found throughout the environment to break up the neutrals and give it some warmth. What’s important to note is that the project achieves superior sustainability without sacrificing innovative and dynamic aesthetic design.

throughout the office design, including the team tables, all focus points and breakaway spaces. This theme is also continued through the social areas. The office interiors have been designed in conjunction with Hassell to achieve a 6-Star Green Star rating under the Interiors Pilot tool. During the design phase, all materials were selected with consideration to durability, adaptability and ease of assembly/ disassembly.
LENDLEASE OFFICE (SMALL) COMMENDATION: GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL SOUTH AFRICA BY TERRAMANZI GROUP, SOUTH AFRICA The GBCSA Head Office is situated in the Old Warehouse building of Black River Park, Cape Town. Products that met the Green Star SA Pilot tool’s strict world-class criteria have been integrated throughout, enhancing the indoor environmental quality for all occupants while ensuring the space meets the functional needs of the GBCSA. There is creative flare found throughout, from a cut-out tree with gorgeous lantern lights to lotus flowers found at a bench. There are also plants throughout, with a green garden wall in the eating area improving the air quality. The design and layout of the office encourages optimal external views, while the lighting design encourages natural light use with motion sensors linked to window blind automation, which manages daylight, reduces artificial light requirements and glare and optimises thermal comfort.
UNIVERSAL MAGAZINES AGED CARE WINNER: LENDLEASE KEPERRA SANCTUARY BY MOSTAGHIM & ASSOCIATES AND LENDLEASE, AUSTRALIA This truly is a sanctuary. Involving the retirees’ thoughts was a positive and holistic approach. The use of different products which have been used are sustainable, beautiful and stylish. The LendLease team was dedicated to finding an approach that would retain the building while allowing for its expansion and much-needed refurbishment. They felt the residents of Keperra Sanctuary were in need of a design to better suit their growing requirements and wanted to create a stylish, modern sanctuary. The core principles behind their intentions were that of community, longevity and sustainability through clever design and material selection. In addition to the utilisation of recycled building materials, their design incorporates energy efficiencies in recycled water, the solar generation of electricity, LED light fittings, water- and waste-efficient fixtures, fittings and appliances, and the general selection of products and soft furnishings. Where available, they have selected materials that feature a strong commitment to recyclability and renewability.
UNIVERSAL MAGAZINES AGED CARE COMMENDATION: MERNDA RETIREMENT VILLAGE CLUB HOUSE BY STOCKLAND RETIREMENT LIVING, SIX DEGREES ARCHITECTS AND DUCON, AUSTRALIA Sustainability at Stockland is about ensuring the communities and environment where the company operates are left in good shape for future generations. As developer, owner and manager, the company has a unique opportunity to create the right sustainable balance of social, environmental and economic conditions. The Mernda Clubhouse is the perfect example of health, wellbeing and sustainability, and is an iconic building in the area that’s contemporary, eco-friendly and engaging on a human and environmental scale. The design was a culmination of a rich and engaging aesthetic, mindful of longevity and flexibility, which is important environmentally but also for delivering economic sustainability using recycled and natural materials.
AUSTRALIAN LIVING STUDENTS WINNER: BALSALATION BY NATHAN KOTLAREWSKI, SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, AUSTRALIA Balsa-lation is a wonderful and innovative product created by a student who is committed to making a difference in the community. The product is a balsa wood acoustic interior lining solution that promotes material innovation, true sustainability and the responsible use of balsa for nonstructural interior wall/ceiling linings. For a product to be labelled green, consideration must be given to the impact it has on the environment, social
culture and economics of an eco-system. Balsa is plantation-grown in Papua New Guinea by smallholders who rely on balsa production for financial returns to support their family. The development of a new interior application for the construction industry is a socially responsible and green interior design solution. The benefits of an alternative balsa product compared to MDF and/or polymer foam products is the reduction in weight, superior thermal conductivity, noise reduction by absorption and ultimately to generate new demand for the resource to support and enhance the livelihoods of smallholders in PNG.

INTERNAT I ON A L GR E E N I N T E R I OR AWA RDS AUSTRALIAN LIVING STUDENTS COMMENDATION: WELSH VICTORIAN TOWNHOUSE RETROFIT BY CAROLYN HAYLES, WALES The Welsh Victorian Townhouse is a best-practice example of a sustainable refurbishment project through the conservation and renovation of a late 19th century townhouse. Through the use of environmentally sustainable and green materials, the environmental impact of the project was reduced while limiting the building occupants’ exposure to toxic harmful chemicals, creating both a healthy and sustainable living environment.
BMW AUSTRALIA PRODUCT INNOVATION COMMENDATION: TIMBER ACOUSTIC PANEL BY ADMONTER, AUSTRALIA/ AUSTRIA Timber Acoustic Panel optimises the acoustic properties of a space while also providing new visual possibilities in interior design. The beautiful range of panels can be left raw or finished with natural oil applied to the surface. Installation options include a concealed, tool-free installation fastening system, or a direct fastening method using clips or secret nails through the optional tongue, which is inserted into the honeycomb groove. All the wood used in panel production – spruce, larch, stone pine and oak — is sourced from the company’s own sustainably managed forests in Austria, which are PEFCcertified. The recycled wood used for two of the panel options is sourced from old Austrian farmhouses and barns scattered throughout the Austrian countryside. Typically, these structures are created from hard-wearing larch which is given a new lease on life. These panels have excellent acoustic performance which is scientifically backed by results of sound absorption tests, which were carried out in the Building Physics laboratory at the Graz University of Technology in Austria.
BMW AUSTRALIA PRODUCT INNOVATION WINNER: ORIGINAL SEED BY MADELEINE DENNIS, AUSTRALIA Original Seed is an environmentally responsible product that is intellectually stimulating. The ability to reduce food waste and use it to create something beautiful and non-toxic is amazing. This product is not only great for our environment, but also our wellbeing. Madeleine has designed a range of seasonally responsive fruit bowls that aim to teach people to eat with the seasons, buy locally and regain a sense of control. The structural aspect of each bowl is designed using origami and paper folding techniques to aid separation. Madeleine has developed a composite bio-resin using only two ingredients — avocado seed and a clear casting epoxy bio-resin. She undertook many experiments to arrive at this new material. The process involved dehydrating the avocado seed into a fine pigment. The seed had to be dry and fine enough to be mixed with the bio-resin and not react chemically. This new material is made entirely from avocado seed and waste by-products. It is to be considered a green and sustainable product. Madeleine didn’t see avocado seeds as a waste product like the rest of society. She believed that if you change the view on waste, you can see it as food and nourishment for new products. Madeleine is passionate about changing the mindset of consumers and their current thoughts about waste. “No longer should or can we consider it useless. We need to use the opportunities nature has provided us with.”

While some paintings appear quickly, others build up slowly over time and there’s no way to predict the course of any given piece. To make her art available nation-wide, many of Dee’s commissions are sourced over the web and based on photographs for reference, but never superimposed over the final portrait. 04 DESIGN: WILLIAMSTOWN BLUESTONE LOCATION: WILLIAMSTOWN, VICTORIA An abandoned bluestone cottage built in 1864 inspired Jason and Jennifer Brettell to create a modern house full of hints to the home’s history. With a goal bring the home back to life, the couple faced the challenge of limited space but transformed the untouched cottage into a home with a minimalist atmosphere. Using industrial-style materials, timber, shades of black and white and metal feature heavily. “We were conscious of respecting history, but also creating a modern-industrial theme through the use of natural elements while trying to maximise every square inch of space,” says Jason. Reminders of the home’s history are present throughout, especially in the living room, where a bluestone feature wall serves as a throwback to the original cottage. An exposed concrete feature wall brings a gritty element to the clean and modern design, while a warm atmosphere is created with leather lounges and personal touches. Now with three bedrooms, two living areas, two bathrooms and an outdoor entertaining area, this residence epitomises old world meets new. 07 DESIGN: PORT MELBOURNE URBAN GREEN LOCATION: PORT MELBOURNE, VICTORIA With family coming and going, a space that was flexible and practical was high on this couple’s agenda. “The property needed to serve a number of functions,” says homeowner Dr Ian Kronborg. “We have adult children who have moved out and moved back. We enjoy entertaining and needed spaces that could cope with this but we also needed our privacy.” The home boasts six main rooms, three bathrooms, a granny flat with bedroom/living, two studies, cellar and a music room currently serving as a nursery. With timber featuring strongly throughout, a slightly industrial atmosphere is created. Architectural design: ARM Architecture (armarchitecture.com.au) Builder: Overend Constructions (overendconstructions.com.au) Photography: Rhiannon Slatter
08 DESIGN: TREE HOUSE LOCATION: GLEN IRIS, VICTORIA With a brief revolving around the concept of creating an “artistic piece with warmth and the subtle use of colour”, three separate areas were to be established within this home, along with bedrooms for the children and owners, an open kitchen, dining area and living room. With the home completely rewired to consist of three distinct areas — a children’s space, a communal family section and a parents’ retreat upstairs — the disrupted flow of the previous house has been banished. Now, the family enjoys time in separate areas of the home and comes together in the “heart” of the house, conveniently located in the middle. The colour scheme is neutral, focusing on the balance of light and letting nature work its magic. Architectural design: Steffen Welsch Architects (steffenwelsch. com.au)
Builder: P & JM Deleo (0418 100 707) Photography: Rhiannon Slatter 09 DESIGN: COUNTY DERRY LOCATION: LONDONDERRY, NORTHERN IRELAND, UNITED KINGDOM “I just feel so privileged to live here,” says architect/homeowner Patrick Bradley, referring to his bold contemporary home built on a treasured part of his parents’ farmland. “Every day, I wake up to the view and it just feels as if I’m on holiday.” Patrick’s space is open plan, with the living areas upstairs making the most of the views. From the entrance, a corridor takes you past an office/third bedroom before opening into the openplan living zone. Here, the kitchen, backed by stairs to the lower floor, leads on to a spacious room with dining and seating areas, large windows and a balcony and terrace. Bold green Ligne Roset Togo sofas
echo the surrounding landscape and bring vibrancy to the neutral palette in this open-plan living area. Architectural design: Patrick Bradley Architects (pb-architects.com) Photography: Aidan Monaghan 10 DESIGN: MELBURNIAN HIDEOUT LOCATION: ELWOOD, VICTORIA Architect and owner David Vernon created a family home that is small on space but big on character. The ambitious build included a generous living and dining space that has the potential to become a main bedroom in the future, along with three additional bedrooms. Timber features heavily throughout the home — a combination of plywood and mountain ash timber for wall linings and cupboards was employed to create warmth and provide a welcoming atmosphere. Architectural design: David Vernon Architect (vernon.com.au) Builder: Mark Projects (markprojects.com.au) Photography: Derek Swalwell 11 DESIGN: NORWICH ECO HOME LOCATION: NORWICH, NORFOLK, UNITED KINGDOM
Tiring of London, Natasha moved with her son, Lucas, (now 12) back to Norfolk, deciding that self-build was the only way she would ever find them an ideal living solution. “I’d spent most of my life subterranean in my flat in Clapham, South London, with the bedroom downstairs,” says Natasha. “The interior layout of the Norfolk cottage was similar, which I liked. Upside-down living is very freeing. You’re not scampering around from one space to the next — you can just stop and look out at the view. It puts the brakes on.” Downstairs hosts Lucas’ and Natasha’s bedrooms, one on each side of the deck. Upstairs on one side of the building sits the kitchen and dining room, with a living space and music room on the other. Large bifold doors open from the dining area onto the shaded balcony. The orange sofa was from a friend and the coffee table is a local Norwich design. The screen is by Anna Glover and the artwork by Gavin Mitchell. he brief for the vignette rooms at the Sydney Home Show 2015 revolved around designing a 2m x 2m space, with Angela Morrison selecting black as her shade of choice. “We demonstrated that, by introducing different layers and finishes to the surfaces, you can create a stylish and elegant space,” says Angela. “Our concept for the vignette was New York loft style — moody, sexy and smooth. We started with Taubmans All Black and then added the wallpaper to the back

wall. The wallpaper’s strong design of lines in both a matt and gloss finish created a 3D look. A black sheer fabric in floor-to-ceiling S-fold curtains softened the space. On the opposite wall, we placed a large black steelframe mirror to create the illusion of more space.” Lighting a space is always a key design element, and it was vital to create the mood and feel of a New York loft. “We used a combination of textures in the lighting, with an antler horn pendant feature light overhead
and a side lamp with a black gloss base,” says Angela. “The ambience was relaxed yet edgy.” An oversized wing-back leather chair invites one to sit and relax. Side tables in black marble and black metallic provide a subtle textural shift with their alluring sheen. All of this was set off by the black and white cowhide rug on the floor. “We created an inviting space that says ‘sit down and relax, here’s a space for you to retreat to with a great book and a quiet drink’,” says Angela. “The key to working with a single shade is using a variety of finishes and layers, textures and gloss, as well as leathers and furs with great lighting. That’s how we created our prize-winning, sexy New York loft.” Angela Morrison is the principal of Style Create Design, a Sydney-based interior design and styling consultancy. Angela has a passion for colour and design that is reflected in a career that spans more than 25 years in the design industry. From floral design to special events design, she now specialises in colour consulting and interior design of residential and commercial spaces. Angela’s experience in the area of colour was recognised recently when she won the Master Painters Award for Excellence in Colour Design for the third year in a row — a true testament to her expertise. stylecreatedesign.com.au

1 As you can imagine, our Boston Terrier Sophia is totally spoilt. 2 Desert boots are one of my all-time favourite things; I have worn them since I was a kid. 3 Currently, I’m crushing on Paul Davies’ paintings. I love his use of colour and the modernist inspiration from LA. 4 The Atlantic Byron Bay is my all-time favourite place to stay for the ultimate getaway. 5 TOMS sunglasses not only have an awesome selection, they also give back with their One for One campaign, donating sight to a person in need for every pair sold. 6 I love the Tab table lamp by E. Barber & J. Osgerby for Flos. 7 The look of this Rufus denim sofa from Jardan screams relaxation and comfort. 8 I recently stepped into the realm of physical products including this candle from the Palm Beach Collection. 9 I love this set of trays — they’re the perfect spot for my collection of keepsakes. 10 I love supporting local heroes, shopping small and championing the little people. Dinosaur Designs is the ultimate home-grown success story, recently celebrating 30 years.
