MARKET UPDATE: How is 2017 shaping up?

When it comes to the real-estate market, 2017 may have begun with some uncertainty. Even though many economist and housing analysts predict the real estate market will slow down in 2017, the Peninsula has remained strong for various reasons.

Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University

Less than an hour away from San Francisco, the Mid-Peninsula is just a quick trip from renowned museums. Yet, those preferring to stay local, while taking part in an exceptional art scene, can look no further than the Cantor Arts Center. Located on the Stanford University campus, this long-standing establishment offers a wide range of art, stretching from the 19th century to international collections from Europe, Asia, Africa, and more.

26 | APR.COM

Founded in 1891, the center was previously known as the Leland Stanford Jr. Museum. Amidst the 1906 earthquake, two-thirds of the building and collections were destroyed. It later closed in 1945 and wasn’t revived until 1963 by Professor Lorenz Eitner. The museum’s strife didn’t end there. Just a few years after the creation of the B. Gerald Cantor Rodin Sculpture Garden, the catastrophic 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake severely damaged the museum, which led to its second closure. Nearly a decade later, the revamped art space re-opened to the public as the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts, and has since thrived as a community favorite. Housing collections from all over the world, the museum features two galleries of European and American art dating back to pre1900s. This section includes works from Dutch, French, and Italian regions, including Joseph Wright of Derby’s Portrait of Edward Becher Leacroft of Wirksworth and Cornelis van Dalem’s panoramic Landscape with Adam and Eve. This diverse hub also represents cultures throughout Asia, ranging from the Himalayas to Southeast Asia. This vast collection spans from 3000 BCE to the late 20th century and features over 5,000 objects. Many look to this gallery for its wide array of techniques and decorative styles, including

PUBLIC ARTS For decades, Los Altos has been premiering sculptures from artist who have created works of art that are distinct, yet bold in the stories they express. These sculptures are showcased throughout the city parks, main streets, and city landmarks. Pieces such as, the Olympic Wannabes by Glenna Goodacre, located in Village Park, or The Cradle of Liberty by Rebecca Joy located in Shoupd Park, are but a few art pieces that contribute to the allure of this charming town. The Public Arts Commission takes great pride in their mission to incorporate “public art that improves the aesthetic quality of public spaces, and makes the City of Los Altos a unique and vibrant community.” With over twenty-five sculptures throughout the town, and new creative projects, such as the bike rack competition (which inspires ways to incorporate public streetscapes), Los Altos is thriving with its creative flair. THE HISTORY MUSEUM A staple of the Los Altos community, since its opening in the spring of 2001, the Los Altos History Museum features educational programs for children, interactive exhibits for both, adults and children, and host a multitude of events that culturally stimulate and enriches the community. Whether it’s rustic charm or the classic ambiance the nature setting brings, the Museum also hosts weddings and other intimate gatherings. Across the courtyard is the landmark J. Gilbert Smith House. Built in 1905, this 1930’s farmhouse replica invites visitors to bass under the cool breeze of the Oak Trees and enjoy the lush gardens for picnics.

after Thanksgiving, illuminated floats, local high school marching bands, and Santa Claus himself, make their way through the downtown area. Sip your hot cocoa, and watch the show! Located in downtown Los Altos, the Art and Wine Festival convenes every year on the second weekend of July. This weekend event showcases musical acts, fine artwork, a variety of delicious foods, and selections from local wineries. EVENTS TOO LOVELY TO MISS Every year since 1948, the Kiwanis club of Los Altos has hosted the fun loving, Pet Parade. The Saturday morning after Mother’s day: dogs, cats, exotic pets, creatures, and their owners make their way around the downtown village. This has been a tradition for the community for over seventy years -one that brings in many residents and guest together in great cheer. Another gem of an event is the Fine Art in the Park, hosted by the Los Altos Rotary club. This is one of the Bay Area’s premier events. With over 170 artists showcasing their creations of sculptures, paintings, ceramics, and other textile and fine jewelry gifts, it is no surprise this event is always crowded. All the proceeds from the event are donated to community service agencies in the Bay Area, and supports international development projects. For more information on upcoming events, festivals, and all things Los Altos, please visit: http://www.losaltosca.gov/ www.losaltosrotary.org/ http://www.losaltoskiwanis.org/

FESTIVALS, FESTIVALS, FESTIVALS! With all its charm, it is no surprise that Los Altos is home to some of the most enjoyable festivals. For over twenty-five years, the Los Altos Chambers of Commerce has celebrated its annual Fall Festival the first weekend of October. This family friendly event celebrates the harvest season with their classic car show, live entertainment, art, craft booths, tasty food from local restaurants, and fine wine and microbrewery selections. If it’s holiday festivities one enjoys most, then the Festival of Lights brings a whimsical enchantment that can’t be missed. Every year on the Sunday

Trends and Thoughts about

SMART HOMES

The growth in ‘connected devices’ within ‘smart homes’ has accelerated over this past year. The online home design company Houzz.com reports

John Wondolowski Chief Technology Officer CMI

that 45% of home renovation projects last year included the installation and implementation of connected devices. These connected devices (devices that are connected to the Internet) make up a portion of the “Internet of Things” (IoT). Gartner Research has predicted that there will be 25 billion IoT devices in use by 2020 and most of those devices will be in homes.

44 | APR.COM

While it is likely that your car and home appliances will be connected in the near future, the most popular areas in today’s smart homes are: Security/Safety, Entertainment, Climate Control, and Lighting. Consumer research company Argus Insights has found a 211% growth this past year in Intelligent Home Security Devices (including the camera-enabled doorbell that we have all seen on television commercials). Many of the research companies agree that the key growth areas in Smart Homes over the coming year will be in the aforementioned Intelligent Home Security Systems and in home technologies for outdoor living as the smart home expands its footprint to include the decks and patios. Many homes have smart televisions and most of those are not currently connected (but can be with a few clicks). There are two overarching challenges that will be solved in the coming months and years. The first big challenge is securing your smart home from hacking. The second is the evolution and maturation of ecosystems that harmonize the control, management, and performance of the various connected devices. SECURING YOUR SMART HOME It is perhaps ironic that the most popular smart home feature is Intelligent Security Systems designed to physically protect your home. The irony is that the number one threat to a smart home may not be someone physically breaking in or a physical disaster like fire, flood, carbon monoxide, etc. The number one threat to a smart home is from unauthorized and unwanted access via the Internet (aka hacking). It could manifest in a practical joke like turning your air conditioner on all day during the winter time or turning on all your lights at 3am. But it is much more likely to manifest in a dangerous breach to your connected devices that could end up causing damage and expense. It has always been critically important to secure your home network that integrates your computer, tablet, phone and printer but even that critical importance has not stopped many of us from having open WiFi networks and simple passwords (if any). When we connect devices in our home we are simply creating another risky exposure if we do not become diligent in securing our personal home networks. SECURE YOUR NETWORK: Be sure to turn on Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA2) encryption on your Wi-Fi. Make sure you change the preset username and password for the administrator of your router. A quick visit to the website of the manufacturer

of your router should yield step by step instructions on how to do both. You may be able to configure multiple networks from your gateway, if you have that ability then segment different parts of your home network (your computer you use for online activity and shopping for example should be isolated from smart devices like your television). SECURE YOUR CONNECTED DEVICES: Become familiar with the features that your smart devices have and disable any feature that you do not want active (like the ability for your smart TV to listen to your conversations). Review the security settings for each device and modify as appropriate. Be sure to install security updates when you receive notifications. GET SERIOUS ABOUT SECURING YOUR SMARTPHONE: Security Companies report that 33% of smartphones do not have locking passcodes enabled. Research how to secure your smartphone and take the time and effort to fully secure it so that if you lost it you would be confident that it will not cause you security problems at home. READ: When you are purchasing smart devices or installing apps it is now time to actually read the Privacy Policy for each. Understand what data might/will be collected and what will be done with that data. Make informed decisions. SMARTHOME ECOSYSTEM DEVELOPMENT In today’s smart home it is likely that many of the connected devices are single-purposed and require administration to be done through a specific app or actually on the device itself. You may have an app for your robot vacuum and another app for your thermostat and so on. There is a clear need for an ecosystem to be created that coordinates or standardizes the administration of the various devices in the smart home. With devices available now in the voice recognition domain (Alexa for example) it would be ideal if a homeowner could select connected devices that can all be controlled by one voice recognition hub. Beyond the centralized administration of the devices there will be interaction and integration between the devices that coordinate their activities. Smart Homes have a great deal of promise for convenience, comfort, and safety for homeowners. It is still a young and maturing area and many great advances will come. But one major point of emphasis right now is that the security of your connected home and home network from electronic damage and theft due to hacking must be your first priority.

This look goes well beyond the standard tile, making kitchen and bathrooms into works of art. Explore samples via Walker Zanger’s new Kaza Collection. 4. ENTRY: BOLD FRONT DOORS Those interested in jazzing up the home’s exterior without a total re-haul and can try painting the front door a bold hue. Whichever color you choose be sure to align it with the ambiance of your interior for a smooth indoor to outdoor transition. 5. DETAILS: MIXING MARBLE AND BRASS Mixing finishes was definitely seen throughout 2016 and this year the combination is set to continue by placing tried and true marble slabs alongside brass fixtures. 6. LIVING ROOM: BLACK STEEL AND GLASS DOORS These floor-to-ceiling doors offer a modern, minimalist style, while keep the living room connected to other parts of the home. Their large, sleek windows can also be used to open up views from communal quarters to backyard gardens.

8. DESIGNER TILE: GEOMETRIC PATTERNS These stylish designs made an appearance in 2016 and can be expected to continue throughout 2017. While the modern patterns may be foreign for some, homes of all kinds can work this style into bathroom tiles, kitchen backsplashes, or something as simple as an area rug. With these patterns, a little bit goes a long way. 9. ARCHITECTURE: CURVED WALLS Luxury designers are weaving curves into the home, particularly in bathrooms. These wavy walls help separate wet and dry spaces and offer a softer look in comparison to traditional squared edges often seen in tubs and cabinets. 10. OUTDOOR GARDEN Despite the surplus of rain pouring over Northern California, many homeowners have caught onto the past years’ water wise designs, making stylish, dry gardens all the more common. These low-maintenance, expansive plants make great picks for both front and backyards. Looking for inspiration? Check out Johanna Silver’s The Bold Dry Garden: Lessons from the Ruth Bancroft Garden.
