For our Spring issue, we are focusing on a theme that is tried-and-true: Trust. With all the noise out there these days, and with what can feel like swirling uncertainties at times, trust once again proves to be paramount. In the real estate market over the past 15 months, we have seen this notion put to the test, proving that despite volatilities and disruptions, our clients have put their trust in us to help them achieve their real estate goals. These pages celebrate individuals who are trusted advisors—architects, designers, and real estate professionals—renowned for their experience, stability, and expertise.
In our feature Nurture the Whole (p.48), we profile San Francisco based Síol, a multi-disciplinary architecture, interiors, and landscape design studio specializing in a holistic approach to their work. There’s no illusion: the spaces they create are for others, and the complexities of location, clients, and environments inspire them. We sit down with the firm’s principals to learn how mutual trust with their clients, trust in their process, and a reverence for nature drives their collective strive to nurture-the-whole of all that they do.
We also catch up with two top-producing agents who have had tremendous success despite a shifting market thanks to their reputation for excellence, and subsequent trust of clients. All Eyes on Ann (p.62) looks at how relative newcomer, Ann Newton Cane, became our top-producing agent in the East Bay in a matter of a few very busy years. The secret to her success: a robust and accomplished prior career; deep roots and involvement in her community; and a genuine passion for all things real estate and service. In Belvedere, we take you inside a trophy property to meet its sellers, an artistic European couple who found the art of living the “island life” in their home, and trusted the Skall Glassman Group to help tell their story and bring the home to market (Artful Living, p.56).
Further from home, we bring you our top design trends from Masion&Objet in Paris. This year’s “Take Care” theme shone a spotlight on artisans and designers whose forward-thinking studios collaborated with trusted, established brands focused on timelessness and re-interpreting iconic designs in fresh ways (Home Trends, p.40). You’ll also find a selection of the finest properties currently for sale in the Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliate network, in Property Finder (p.68). We hope you find this issue inspiring, and thank you to our valued clients and agents for your continued trust.
Enjoy.

San Francisco-based Síol specializes in a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to architecture, interior design, and landscape design. There’s no illusion: the spaces they create are for others, and the complexities of location, clients and environments inspire them. We sit down with the firm’s principals, Kevin Hackett, Jessica Weigley, and Robo Gerson to learn more about their work, how a reverence for nature guides their explorations, and how they collectively strive to nurture the whole of all that they do.
Four One Nine Síol Studios San Francisco, California
Tell us about some of your experiences that have shaped your work and brought you to this point in your careers at Síol.
Jessica: I have a teaching background, and that kind of personto-person interaction overlaps with a lot of what we do. I came to interior design as a second career and learned through hands-on experience, which I am grateful for. I find that my experiences as a teacher and as a Peace Corps volunteer have been directly applicable to our work, especially running a team.
Robo: A lot of my early design experience came from liking to fix things, specifically cars, and making a building is kind of the ultimate ‘fix it.’
Kevin: I have an interest in philosophy, especially holism, and weave it into how I think about design. I’m also interested in the connection to nature, which I think goes for all of us, as well as the mind-body connection.
How did this partnership form and what was your vision then, and now?
Kevin: We were interested in integrated design, and we also had problems with how architecture was practiced, generally in a not holistic way. We thought it was detrimental to design when you don’t have a coherent narrative.
Jessica: Kevin and I came together around a shared philosophy of what good design could do for people. It was
very conceptual and rooted in our experiences working at firms that didn’t approach projects from a holistic point of view. Shortly after we started the firm, Robo joined the team, and his practical and meticulous approach to design stabilized that and helped us grow.
Describe your firm’s relation to the Gaelic word Síol and how that connects to authenticity, potentiality, and balance via your design process.
Kevin: For us, authenticity is about transparency, both with our clients and with ourselves and our team.
Jessica: We see the concept of Síol as emblematic of growth and the

idea of connecting to something essential, the core element of a project that is born from the site and the clients’ aspirations. When we think of our projects as seeds, we want to look at it and nurture it into what it’s supposed to be.
Expand on your integrative approach and how it’s multidisciplinary. Why is this so important in your designs?
Jessica: Our integrative approach, meaning we think of every element of a project as a part of a cohesive whole, creates projects that just have a different feel to them. There is something holding them together, allowing them to read as one. You can feel that when you walk in.
Kevin: It’s the dialogue between architecture, interior design, and landscape, that allows us to create connectivity between all of the different parts of a project.
Robo: All of the disciplines are working toward the same goals, together— that’s what allows each project to work well as a whole.
Tell us more about some of your architecture, interiors, and landscape projects. Which have been standouts over the years?
Jessica: The 18th Street loft was a great experience. That was a project where in the process of listening to the client’s needs, we figured out that we needed to totally flip the plan. It was completely
unexpected for the client, but it really worked.
Genesee, a home in L.A., was the first project where we really went fully interdisciplinary. From landscape, to architecture, to interiors, to objects that are used daily, even toothbrushes—we set up the home in its entirety. That level of care is something that our clients, who have really busy lives, find really helpful.
I had a conversation with the client for Genesee last week, and she was just so happy. The house is the best version of an exterior skin that she’s got, and it was great to see her so happy there.
52
18th Street Síol Studios San Francisco, California
Your process with clients sounds collaborative. What makes an ideal client?
Robo: We’ve had pretty good experiences with clients who really wanted to work with us and sought us out. The experience of an architect who just pushes through what they want doesn’t seem to exist anymore. At the same time, we’ve been blessed with the good fortune to work with clients who want to work with us and want to hear our thoughts and our experience and participate in our process.
Tell us more about some of your residential projects, and current
projects underway. What is exciting your team now?
Jessica: We have a few projects in less urban places: Montecito, Bolinas, Point Reyes. They’re a lot more connected to nature than other projects we’ve had.
Kevin: We’re finally getting to express ourselves outside of a twenty-foot-wide lot. We can explore more than ever before.
You provide a concierge service –can you explain that offering?
Kevin: As designers and architects, we are best poised to take care of the space after it’s done. It’s much easier for us to make certain decisions post-occupancy. We are in service to our clients.
Jessica: We also have a Rolodex of really trusted people, from consultants to subcontractors, that we can call on. Homes need maintenance, and we can help make that happen.
What advice would you give homeowners seeking your services?
Kevin: When purchasing a new home, I see too many clients wanting to immediately remodel or demolish. I encourage clients to hold off on that and really get to know the space and the place—the smell of jasmine that comes in when the wind blows a certain way, the way the sun enters in the afternoon, the structure— before making any decisions. You
53
Rhode Island Residence Síol Studios San Francisco, California
Valley Street Síol Studios San Francisco, California
just purchased a new home; spend time in it. Take time to understand the site. The subtle nature of it can’t be understood until you’ve lived in it for a while.
Jessica: That resonates with something the Genesee client said; that it’s taken her time to feel like the house really properly supports her and has evolved with her to do so. The house is never quite done. You continue to change. Your kids change. You get older. That continuous change includes allowing things to not be perfect or even great for a little bit. It’s cyclical.
What is the firms’ ultimate goal today and for years to come?
Robo: We’re trying to create experience. We are creating beautiful design, but the beautiful design is all in the pursuit of experience. One of our regular words is ‘sacred space.’ We’re trying to create that for people. We want to interpret and actualize the idea of ‘home.’ We want to actualize the place as sanctuary.
Kevin: The idea of the single design contract is really important. It has an e ciency. We’re project-driven, but at the end of the day, there’s a potential long-term relationship that develops as we work with you to help your space evolve alongside you.
Jessica: I want to emphasize the amount of care and thoughtfulness that we give each of our clients and our projects.
Robo: We really care that it works for you. It’s important to us, that the project meet the needs of the client and that it supports their spiritual experience.

ARTFUL LIVING
140 Bella Vista, Belvedere | Listed for $8,200,000 Shown here, from left: Jennifer Glassman, Marcia Skall, Marine and Geoffrey Strage
Photography: Rob Jordan, Rob J Photos
Art and home are one at this stunning Belvedere residence listed with top-producing agents the Skall Glassman Group at Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty. We catch up with the current owners, artist Marine Strage and husband Geoffrey Strage, to learn more about the allure of 140 Bella Vista, and living the ideal “island life.”
How did you find this slice of heaven and make it your own?
Marine: We got very lucky when we found this location. It reminded us of Europe, especially the views. They were very similar to the views over the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The house had rooms large enough to accommodate and give life to our art and sculptures.
Geoffrey: When we left London to come to California, we spent six months traveling with our young children, in Europe and Southeast Asia. The children were six and eight, and a lot of people thought we were insane. We collected a lot of eclectic art and sculpture along the way with no solid idea of what house we might find in California. We knew we wanted to be by the sea and somewhere near San Francisco.
So, it was a match. Familiar vistas, and enough space for your art and collections. Was it love at first sight then?
Marine: When we saw the house, we
had a coup de foudre (love at first sight) for the view! Personally, it reminded me of both the Italian coast of Positano and the coast of Britanny, where I am from, especially with the sailing culture. We’ve lived here for 10 years, and the gorgeous view never gets old. In fact, it influenced my art practice a lot. It is an endless source of inspiration for painting: the atmospheric quality of the light is unique as it is tinted by the morning fog rolling over the Angel Island. It brings a peaceful feeling of happiness. Belvedere’s streets and the views resonate with the charm of old European cities.
How do your backgrounds, family and aesthetics compliment living here? And in the broader community of Belvedere?
Marine: As a French artist who grew up in Brittany and studied and worked in Paris, I love art, culture, and to be on or near the sea. So does my husband Geoffrey, who I met in Bali on holiday before moving to London in 2000 to start a life together. Our two daughters share this same passion. Living here is really about having an island life
mentality: beautiful sceneries and a tight community. A feeling of peace, retreating from the rest of the world while being just a few minutes away from where it is all happening—that is so characteristic of Belvedere.
Geoffrey: We do enjoy this part of the island in particular. The close water views over the yacht club offer an ever-changing scene populated by boats, children, thousands of sea birds and marine life such as seals and sea lions.
Talk to us about the marriage of art and your work with the home.
Marine: I wanted this home to be a testament to the beauty of a California lifestyle. I am drawn to the beauty of the water, the sky, and the light we experience in this house throughout the day. The different series of art pieces displayed in the house represent that: the atmospheric moody soft winter light with the delicate fog; the big sky views and moon nights; and the vibrant flower fields in spring all around Belvedere and Tiburon. The

house has so many large galleries and hallways that it was the perfect blank canvas to curate a selection of art that reflects the beauty of the environment, even in an abstract way. How many homes give you as many windows with a great view, while giving you so many walls to hang art? It was the perfect fit for us.
Describe a memorable moment here.
Marine: I will never forget what our young six-year-old daughter said while visiting the house for the first time: “Daddy, do you have your credit card so that we can buy this house now?”
It worked! What advice would you give to buyers of this home? And other sellers in Belvedere?
Marine: Belvedere is truly special, and you can fall in love with the island vibes. Anyone who chooses to live here has a particular taste for old class and grandeur of views. There are not many places we have seen in the world that offer that
amazing combo: closeness to—and views of—a big city, and an amazing lifestyle for a family with proximity to restaurants, schools, sport clubs, gorgeous weather, stunning views and hikes. This special enclave features homes with character and history, and a concentration of super interesting international people who share the same values. We made friends for life on Belvedere Island, and everyone who visits us says we live the California dream.
Talk to us about the importance of proper representation when selling this home. Why the Skall Glassman Group?
Geoffrey: We felt that Marcia and Jennifer would be the perfect team to demonstrate and share our dream of what a special place this could be to raise a family in elegance. Their attention to detail, understanding of the value, marketing power, and their network were second to none. They helped us share that vision in a way we felt nobody else could.
What advice would you give to our readers reading this now?
Geoffrey: Come see this enchanting paradise.
Marine: …and fall in love with Bella Vista and Belvedere.

ALL EYES ON ANN
In the span of a few busy years, Ann Newton Cane has taken the high-end real estate market in the East Bay by storm—a graceful and welcome one, that is. The top-producing agent in the East Bay for Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty, Cane is a natural thanks to her robust and accomplished prior career, her deep roots and involvement in her community, and a genuine passion for all things real estate and service. We sit down with Cane to learn more about her road to real estate and what drives her success.
Ann, you’ve had an incredible few years as a new-comer in real estate, and you’ve grown quickly to become one of the top agents focusing on the high-end luxury market in the East Bay. How did you get to where you are now? What was your road to real estate?
Thank you. It’s been quite the experience and ride. Real estate is a second sales career for me. After college, I joined the then-upstart telecommunications company MCI, where I looked for opportunities to take business away from the behemoth AT&T. I managed the relationships of MCI and its successor with key global accounts such as Kaiser Permanente, Amgen, Wells Fargo, Nissan, Times Mirror, and First Interstate Bank. Later, I was recruited by the CEO of Qwest Communications (now CenturyLink) to work for him as head of West Coast Global Accounts. After a short break from full-time work to focus on my two children, I decided on a new career. I had grown up on a
huge cattle ranch near Mt. Shasta, and my family always had bought and sold real estate. I love my community in the East Bay near San Francisco, and know so many people in it. Helping them with their residential real estate needs proved irresistible to me.
Tell us about your experience and why it matters. Describe this value add to your clients.
My experience in telecommunications sales laid the foundation for my current work. I dealt with the mostsophisticated business transactions worth hundreds of millions of dollars, working with exceptionally sophisticated businesspeople on both sides of the transactions. I learned to love the big picture (how to satisfy each side’s goals), but also that meticulous attention to detail was essential to success.
When did you get your first big break or record sale in real estate? How did this make you feel about your chosen career path and serving clients?
I hadn’t been long in the real estate business when I came across a beautiful house for sale for about $6 million in Happy Valley in Lafayette. A friend was living happily in nearby Moraga, and their family wasn’t actively looking to move. I said to her: “I wouldn’t bother you, except that I know this house is just what you would want.” She and her husband looked at it and fell in love with it. We bought it within days. And the story has the happiest of endings: a couple of years later, their daughter was engaged to be married. She canceled one wedding date because of Covid, and then another date a year later because of a huge wildfire near the intended wedding site. So, at the last minute, they put together the wedding in the spacious and spectacular back yard of the home I found for the family. It was the most glorious wedding ever.
Tell us about some of your clients: why are they seeking your services?
62
Ann Newton Cane
I love transactions at any price point. There’s something special about helping a young family buy their first home. It’s different, but equally special, to buy or sell the highest-end homes for well-to-do clients. I find that these clients like understated luxury.
Describe the areas/communities your serve. What drew you to work in these areas? How are they changing?
I specialize in what is called Lamorinda (Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda), and communities near there, like Piedmont and Alamo. I am finding that more and more young people, who in prior years might have preferred living in San Francisco, now enjoy what the East Bay has to offer. When I took that break from full-time work to
focus on my children, I devoted myself to community activities and other volunteer work, including: service on the College Preparatory School’s Board of Trustees; leadership positions in the National Charity League; Parents’ Club President of the Orinda Intermediate School; Swimming Chair of the Meadow Swim & Tennis Club; and service on the Membership Development Committee at the Claremont Country Club in Oakland. Real estate called to me when my kids headed off to college (both to Dartmouth), and my close community ties to the area got me off to a fast start.
Describe a memorable client experience and career milestone.
A few years ago, I sold a house in Happy Valley in Lafayette for what was then the highest price ever on the Multiple Listing Service. When the house hit the market, we received a quick eight-figure
offer. But it wasn’t the price we thought we could obtain, and we held out for our asking price. The day we got that price was one for a deserved celebration.
Describe a dream client.
A dream client is one who accepts and acts on good advice in preparing a home for sale. Any house can be improved before going to market with cost-effective painting, inspections, repairs, and staging. Clients, almost by definition, are comfortable in their homes as they are, and sometimes clients don’t have a vision about how the properties can be made better, or at least made more accessible to the widest range of buyers. The dream client is receptive to good professional advice.

What trends are happening in your market? What advice would you give to buyers? And sellers?
As for buyers, I would advise them to move quickly. The second half of 2022 and early 2023 was a buyers’ market, but I think that is coming to an end. Interested buyers should not tarry. As for sellers, I would encourage them to get away from the mindset: “My house is ‘worth’ $X.” We all learned in college microeconomics that “the value of a thing is just exactly what ‘twill bring” in the marketplace. Well-prepared, well-priced homes will sell in any market, and wise sellers listen to the market when it speaks.
Tell us about your most recent sales and current listings on the market.
Recently I went into contract on three wonderful properties, two in Lafayette for a total of more than $10 million, and one $3 million parcel of vacant land with spectacular SF Bay views in Orinda, near Tilden Park. There are two great active listings in particular. One, for $8.5 million, is one of the best homes in Alamo, on Lakeview Place close by Round Hill Country Club. Another, for $4.95 million, is on To emire Drive in Lafayette. It has a working winery and adjoining vineyard, and a large greenhouse and separate gym/yoga studio. It sits at the top of a hill in mature foliage and commands spectacular views of Mt. Diablo.
What’s been the ultimate takeaway from these last few years of success and your encore career?
I got into real estate because I knew it would be fun, but I didn’t get into real
estate to dabble or as a hobby. The phrase “working 24/7” is much abused, but realtors unprepared to sacrifice their personal time aren’t putting their clients’ interest first. I’m proud that in just a few years I became the largest sales producer in Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realtys’ East Bay region, but in all honesty that didn’t occur by accident: Make the clients’ interest your lodestar, and good things happen.

Magnificent Anini Vista Home KILAUEA, HAWAII
4277-C Anini Vista Drive
Anini Vista is a private enclave located on the coveted North Shore of Kauai, where privacy, refinement and forever views are the common denominator. This gated estate, with its picturesque bluff location, was the vision of architect Gary Tobey who embraced the concept of a home without walls. Your introduction to the home is over the tropical water gardens where you then enter by way of the pivot door where walls of glass open to the incomparable vistas over the Pacific below. Anchored by a central great room with soaring ceilings, this home sits on over an acre of manicured grounds. Nearby adventures await; surf, sail or paddleboard in iconic Hanalei Bay, stroll the shops and restaurants of Kilauea village, horseback ride, hike the Napali Coast…..or do simply nothing but luxuriate in the balmy tradewinds and solitude this home offers.

Breathtaking Kauai Vista Home KILAUEA, HAWAII
4221 Anini Vista Drive
Acclaimed Italian architect Gianni Francione heralded innovative tropical design, allowing the environment to take center stage, on this stunning home. On three acres, flush with opulent landscaping, is the backdrop for an avant-garde architectural creation that fuses the unorthodox use of materials with a modern aesthetic. Having spent decades in Bali, the architect envisioned this home where refined sensibilities and an urbane tone meets functionality. The edgy design will beckon fans of modernism in architecture. The seascape stretches to the historic Kilauea Lighthouse and can be experienced from most rooms in the home. Across the sweeping lawn, the weeping wall, iridescent pool and thatch roofed hale remind you that your mission is to relax.
