PAUL & LAURIE ZUVELLA: helping Clients Hit a Homerun No strangers to life on the road, Paul and Laurie Zuvella have spent the last 16 years helping clients transition in and out of their homes. Formerly a professional baseball player for the Yankees, Indians, Braves, Royals, and a coach for the Rockies, Paul was happy to settle down in San Ramon. The place he and his family have called home for the past 25 years. What began as a part-time, off-season job has turned into an undoubtedly successful real estate career, ranking Paul within the top three Better Homes & Gardens Realtors nationwide. “When I was in baseball I was gone all the time. So, when I decided to get out I wanted to be a part of a community. I wanted to put real roots down somewhere, and real estate made a lot of sense,” says Paul. Natives to the Bay Area the couple grew up nearly down the street from one another. What began as a high school friendship evolved into marriage that’s thrived for more than 30 years. A fitting pair, the Zuvellas perfectly complement one another, bringing a culmination of strengths to each business opportunity. “Laurie has a background in interior design, so she does all the staging, and marketing. She’s the engine that keeps us running,” says Paul. “Negotiating and working with clients tend to be my strengths.” Valued for their direct communication, client
care, and genuinity, Paul and Laurie have earned a noteworthy reputation among both clients and industry professionals. “I think the biggest compliment [Paul] gets is when other agents say, ‘I loved working with you,’ or ‘I hope my clients like this house, because I’d love to do another deal with you,’” says Laurie. “When we finish a transaction and it’s been a smooth escrow, where both agents are happy it makes it a great experience for everyone.” Much of that positivity derives from the Zuvella’s genuine interest in treating others with fairness and respect. “I try to treat people how I’d hope to be treated. That goes in real estate and my personal life. That takes you very far in business, because when people realize you’ve got their back, they’re much more likely to refer you business down the road,” says Paul. In fact it isn’t uncommon for sellers to leave the Zuvellas with a vacant home and full trust as the family moves on to their next destination. Whether their clients move to Switzerland, Georgia, or Colorado, Paul and Laurie’s track record gives sellers complete confidence, allowing families to rest at ease and transition into the next chapter of their lives. “In all honesty that’s one of the greatest compliments you can have in this business- when [a seller] trusts you enough to say, ‘go do your thing,’ or ‘whatever you think we need to do do it,’” says Paul. “We don’t always get clients like that, but when we do they honestly have full trust in what we do and I feel like that’s a trust we’ve earned.” Well connected to the community, Paul is also a part of the Contra Costa Association of Realtors Scholarship Foundation, which raises money in the community and provides nearly 20 scholarships each year to college students. Paul also ran an annual baseball clinic for the last 13 years, where he and a few of his former baseball colleagues offered free lessons to local children. Over time the

When they’re not helping clients or the community, the Zuvellas enjoy playing golf, and taking weekend trips to Napa, Sonoma, and Carmel. The couple also has two sons who share their parents’ love for travel, and have seen nearly 27 states from the family’s traveling baseball days, and more than a dozen countries as young adults. Their son, Shane, 27, may have broken a record for boarding 14 flights before he was 8 months old. He now lives in San Francisco, and works for Amazon. Bay Area Real Estate: 2014 Market Update We are through the first six months of Bay Area home sales and we are able to look back on what has actually happened compared to what was predicted. Here is a summary of the first six months and a projection of what is to come in the next few years regarding Bay Area real estate. • San Francisco Bay Area real estate markets are off about 6.2% from the first six months of 2014 compared to 2013. This number is for closed escrows. • Employment: 2011 – 2014. Unemployment rates have been cut in half during this time period. It is now 5% or below in five of the nine Bay Area counties. A very compelling place to live in the country – jobs, education, cultural, etc • 2010 to 2014 – Population growth in the Bay Area has out stripped new home sales by two to one. This is what is driving the under supply nature of our Bay Area markets. There are not enough homes to go around. For the first six months of 2014 new homes only counted for 642 home sales in the Bay Area. • John Burns Consulting is predicting Bay Area home prices from July 1, 2014 to December 31, 2017 will be up by 19%. Their opinion is that the housing market will continue to improve
in 2014, but at a much slower pace than almost everyone expected. Home sellers need to be much more strategic with their pricing and timing. • Interest rate rise will effect sellers more than buyers. Sellers will need to pick their timing to sell their homes in a more strategic manner. The sooner the better if they will be selling in the next two years. More negotiation room will be evident as interest rates rise. Summary: The Bay Area will be a Seller’s market for at least another 2 to 5 years. It will continue to have an under supply of homes to sell. There is an expected price appreciation in the Bay Area of 20% for the next two to five years.
