Jake’s Story... On June 9, the San Ramon Valley community was shaken by the news that Jake Javier, a bright, caring young man and captain of the San Ramon Valley High School football team, had suffered a severe neck injury in a tragic swimming accident that had left him paralyzed from the chest down. The accident occurred one day before he was scheduled to graduate with honors. Jake (nicknamed “Javi”) had earned an almost perfect 4.0 grade point average, was named Athlete of the Year at San Ramon and had received the coveted Peter Villa Award naming Jake the most outstanding student-athlete football player in the entire San Ramon Valley Unified School District. He was just weeks away from fulfilling his dream of becoming a collegiate student-athlete enrolled to study mechanical engineering and play football at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, one of the top engineering schools in the country. Jake had surgery to stabilize his spine and has begun a long and grueling rehabilitation process. Despite the difficult news, Jake’s spirit and attitude have never wavered. He is the same upbeat and determined young man that his family, friends, teachers, coaches and teammates have come to know and love. At SRVHS, Jake earned the reputation as a fierce competitor and he has brought that tenacity into the rehab center where he works daily to improve his strength and retrain his body. Doctors have said he will likely never walk again, but there is some hope that he will regain the use of his hands and triceps through a new groundbreaking and revolutionary stem cell treatment program. On July 7, Jake was the 5th person in the world to receive 10,000,000 stem cells directly injected into his spinal cord. Jake and his family were ecstatic at this opportunity of a lifetime.
