With recent rainfall it’s easy to feel like California’s drought is part of the past. While reservoirs have risen to near average levels, the Sierra’s snow wasn’t enough to cease the golden state’s water woes, according to The San Francisco Chronicle. The state Department of Water Resources notes melted snowpack provides about 30 percent of the water California generally uses. “The north has really benefited from the winter pattern, but it’s been hit and miss down south,” said David Rizzardo, the chief of snow surveys and water-supply forecasting for the Department of Water Resources told The Chronicle. “The impacts and the problems from drought still persist, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley and farther south. We’re still going to have impacts to farms, including fallowed fields and dry wells.” Needless to say water conservation should continue to remain top of mind. With summer just around the corner we’ve compiled some helpful tips to further encourage water wise home habits.
INSTALL WATER WISE APPLIANCES Given the wide range of eco-friendly technologies, little adjustments can go a long way. Those working on remodeling projects or swapping out old appliances can install low-flush toilets and waterconscious fixtures to minimize excess use during daily routines. Peninsula residents can also incorporate low-water dishwashers into the home’s culinary quarters. STAY CONSCIOUS OF WATER USAGE For those looking for a little automated aid, install Wi-Fi compatible systems like Blossom and Rachio. These wall-mounted smart controllers monitor water use and schedule irrigation based on local weather patterns. As a bonus, Rachio can also pair with Nest thermostats to offset home fires. On the rare occasion your Nest device detects smoke, Rachio will automatically turn on irrigation systems to lessen fire damage. PLANT LOW-WATER FLOWERS AND NATIVES Homeowners can avoid excess water use by replacing grassy
lawns with native plants and low-water flowers. Natives have naturally acclimated to our Mediterranean climate and require minimal irrigation. Lewisias, apricot mallows, and wild lilacs naturally inhabit California climates and need less water and maintenance, yet garner ample wildlife. Ferns, deer grass, and succulents, commonly found in desert climates, also make great picks for a water-wise garden. Other low-water plants such as lavender and spirea are equally attractive perennials that thrive with minimal irrigation. AVOID GROWING WATER-HOGGING PRODUCE While kitchen gardens definitely have their benefits, some vegetables require a surge of water to produce fruit. This summer instead of growing corn or tomatoes, amplify your herb garden or incorporate drought-friendly favorites in the yard like thornless blackberries, dwarf citrus trees, or elderberry bushes. With so many options, peninsula homeowners can easily find little ways to lend a hand in California’s ongoing drought. 3
