REAPING the Benefits of
GREEN LIVING By Kimberly Gomes
In a time where sustainability permeates everyday living, Peninsula and Silicon Valley residents have incorporated a wide range of green aspects into their homes. Low-flush toilets, solar panels, and efficient cooling systems are just a few of today’s many options. For those interested in reviewing what’s available, we’ve simplified your search by compiling a fundamental guide to green living. Solar Electricity Residents can incorporate three types of solar energy into their home: passive solar, solar thermal, and photovoltaic (PV). Passive solar simply consists of orienting your home towards the sun, which may have already been done intuitively by design. Solar thermal systems are often used to heat pools and water, while PV harnesses the sun’s energy to create electricity for the home. Yet, rooftop solar panels have become the most popular option on this spectrum. Beyond environmental, the benefits are visible on the utility bill. Local companies like SolarCity offer both leasing and purchasing agreements, creating options for the weary. Until the end of 2016 federal tax credits also save homeowners 30 percent off of solar installation prices, which will likely drop down to 10% at the beginning of 2017. Water Conservation Water efficiency also serves as a heavy player in green living. As California’s drought remains top of mind, new and remodeled homes have weaved in practical water-wise components. Low-flush toilets have become standard. These alternatives soak up just half the water a conventional toilet uses. Multi-setting showerheads, water-efficient faucets and dishwashers, as well as tankless water heaters all offer easy ways to shell off wasted gallons. When it comes to landscaping consumers can explore smart watering systems like Iro. This product features a Wi-Fi-connected sprinkler system that schedules watering around the resident’s geography and weather.
Those looking to go above and beyond can also integrate gray water systems into their home. The most common gray water DIY conversion irrigates backyard plants with water from the washing machine. Art Ludwig, author and ecological systems designer of Oasis Designs, describes how to re-direct 10 to 25 gallons of water per load for a horizontal-axis machine, or about 40 gallons per load for a vertical axis machine. If residents use a biocompatible detergent, this water can hydrate ornamental plants and fruits trees. Efficient HVAC With plenty of smart systems on the market, there’s no need to watch the AC bill rack up this summer. Nest Thermostats have become widely popular throughout the Bay Area, allowing homeowners to set thermostats from their phone to conserve and ensure ideal temperatures. Apps like Wink enable homeowners to save electricity by remotely turning off lights that have been accidentally left on. Residents can pair Wink with Cree’s Connected LED lights, which not only sip power, but can also be controlled via phone. While these smart heating and cooling systems stack benefits, it’s imperative to have double-paned, water-stripped windows to retain desired temperatures throughout the home. Single-paned windows can release up to 25% of the home’s air, raising the AC bill during hotter months. Whether you’re incorporating just one or multiple eco-minded alternatives, the benefits generally speak for themselves. Discuss rates and options with your local solar, appliance, and HVAC professional for further information.

From a seller… “I have been involved in some capacity of the real estate business since I was 16 years old. Above all the lessons I have learned is that integrity is the most important quality to pursue in the people you work with. Derk has that in abundance. What he also has is a set of skills that are exceptionally valuable to me in my business. Derk’s market knowledge is solid, and when he lists one of my projects I know we are going to get top dollar. I've never felt that Derk views me as a commission but rather as a client and a friend whose interests he protects and looks out for. I would, without reservation, recommend Derk's services to anyone looking to buy or sell a home.” —Lance T, managing member, Urban West
From a buyer… “Derk came highly recommended from a friend, as he had recently sold her home. Here are some of the best things about Derk as a Realtor: Knowledgeable -- Derk knows Palo Alto inside and out: the real estate market, the geography and culture, and the people who make things happen. Savvy -- Derk helped us make a very strategic bid that would be attractive to the seller while preserving our interests as the buyers. We always felt that he was 1,000% in our corner and worked very hard to get us the best possible deal. All-around awesome -- He has all of the great personal qualities that you’d want in a realtor, such as intelligence, humor, and a perfect mix of pragmatism and optimism. He is also extremely generous with his time and always made us feel that we were his most important client. As I have said numerous times, “Derk, you are the BEST!" Do yourself a big favor and work with him!” —Betty S.

There With Care: By Kimberly Gomes
When founder, Paula Dupre’ Pesmen, got a call from a wish foundation she was working as a movie producer on the set of Harry Potter. A child wished to visit the set before the film was released. This young girl and 3 other critically ill children catalyzed an idea that later became There With Care, a Colorado and California-based charity that provides personalized support for families with children facing critical illness. While the national organization celebrates its 10 year mark, Menlo Park’s chapter is ramping up for its third year serving the Bay Area. Since opening its doors in January of 2012, There With Care has helped close to 350 families with critically ill children facing everything from heart and lung transplants to terminal cancer and blood disease. “When people think of giving to an organization they may think of making a financial contribution, but that’s not the only way to help,” says Sara Alexander, Executive Director of There With Care’s Bay Area chapter. “Whether it’s sitting with somebody, or taking a sibling to the park, or making sure people have enough food to eat….we support families in a holistic way.” Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital refers families who have limited to no support networks. From there the charity contacts them within 48 hours to begin a caring relationship that lasts throughout the critical phase of the child’s illness. During this time, There With Care gets to know the families and their situation to see what’s needed most. Often times they have no local ties, or have had to leave their job to be bedside with their child. Offering a highly personalized program, There with Care delivers weekly groceries and meals; provides new mothers with clothing and baby essentials; assists mourning families with funeral

HOLISTICALLY SUPPORTING FAMILIES OF CRITICALLY ILL CHILDREN
One of our children who is undergoing chemotherapy. This photo was done by a professional photographer who volunteers her time and skill to capture some beautiful moments of our children and their family
services; or may help with auto repair or gas cards to offset the costly transit that comes with frequent hospital visits. Yet, it’s not just about giving a financial or physical gift. “This week we have a 3-year-old in the hospital whom has not had many visitors and the mother is very lonely.. For this family, we are looking for volunteers who can go to the hospital over the weekend to spend some time with the family. Sometimes it’s just about giving time and care.” There With Care is able to provide customized services through inkind donations, financial contributions, community support and the generous time of their volunteer network. Whether contributors are organizing food or diaper drives, cooking meals, or babysitting and tutoring siblings, the charity has been blessed by a community that consistently extends their time and talents for the betterment of others. Alain Pinel Reatlor, Greg Celotti, his wife, Julie, and daughter, Katherine, are
just a few individuals who’ve seen the organization’s heart-warming work first hand. “It’s the simple things that are so big to these families,” says local volunteer, Julie Celotti. “The people that work at There With Care have the biggest hearts out of everyone I know. It’s such a beautiful thing. The work they do really warms my heart.” Built by the community’s talents, the ways to support the charity are truly limitless. For some it means driving a family to the hospital, so the mother can sit in the backseat with her sick child. For others it could mean offering a free house cleaning for immunedeficient patients. The options are endless. Aiming to aid 250 families this year, the Bay Area organization plans to extend its reach to families being served at UCSF’s Benioff Children’s Hospital in 2015. “[There with Care] offers a really beautiful way to see how people come together to support families in need...On a daily basis you’re seeing what someone else is going through, and you can show your care by doing something to make the day a little easier. It really does make a difference,” says Sara. For more information on how you can contribute to Bay Area families facing critical illness, visit bayarea.therewithcare.org, or e-mail volunteer. bayarea@therewithcare.org.
