ifteen years ago, Eric and Sharneth Del Sesto were looking to find a home which better suited their family. In their search for that perfect fit, one particular street stood far above the rest. The homes on Glen Road were spread comfortably on a hill, gazing out onto tranquil woodland surroundings. Birds chirped merrily, patterns of light and shadow swirled with the shifting trees, and dappled sunlight warmed the ground.

The moment Eric and Sharneth stepped foot on 1198 Glen Road, they were overcome with a sense of peace and happiness. Nestled next to a babbling creek and a lush regional park, the property’s surrounding foliage provided total privacy with no visible neighbors to either side. The existing home was an attractive ranch style hunting lodge from the 1950s, boasting wood paneling and dark colors which blended seamlessly into the trees that Eric and Sharneth’s children later came to know as the “fairy forest.” The family knew right away that this land was meant to be their home. The question was: What to do with it?

Drawn to a number of architectural styles, Eric and Sharneth deliberated on the direction they wanted to take for the home’s overall design. During a visit to France at Eric’s ancestral home — an original barn built in the 1950s — Sharneth realized that the Old World European style was what she wanted for their home on Glen Road. Backed by an army of skilled architects, contractors, civil engineers, and expert craftsmen, they carefully curated a plan to source quality materials and create a modern dwelling which embodied that authentic European charm. With the help of 3D modeling, they drafted the exact specifications by which they would make their concept a reality.

Although they were hesitant to jump straight into renovations, both Eric and Sharneth immediately envisioned updates that would transform the house into their ideal dream home. Their previous residence had a sprawling living room which never felt quite cozy enough for intimate chats with friends and family. In their new home, they envisioned a more functional and inviting living space with a beautiful fireplace as a centerpiece for conversation or curling up with a book. They saw a home with wide four-foot hallways, new bedroom layouts that would bathe in natural light, soaring high ceilings and skylights, and tall windows to enhance the views of the surrounding flora. After much deliberation, it became clear that renovating within the restrictions of the existing structure would not provide Eric and Sharneth with the results they wanted. Working with an expert architect, they concocted a new plan: they would start from scratch, tearing down the house that stood and beginning their dreams anew from the ground up. Today, all that remains from the original home is the swimming pool out back.

Eric and Sharneth poured heart and soul into their new home, in its construction from foundation to rooftop, leaving their personal touch on every detail. Eric’s focus on logistics and technical systems imparted an efficient and practical scheme to the architecture. Sharneth imbued the home with tasteful style and finishes, creating a sense of warmth and comfort.


From the materials used to the dimensions of each room and hall, they worked meticulously with their architect to direct the construction of their dream home. They also designed a practical front entrance which opened onto the living room and dining room with the kitchen adjacent, so that the family could spend more time together throughout the day, whether they were cooking, working, or just hanging out. By pouring their attention into the new design and applying their past experiences, Eric and Sharneth crafted a functional, comfortable dwelling which embodied everything they cherished most about their previous homes. It would become the culmination of all their hopes and dreams throughout the years. At the home’s entrance, you are greeted by a beautiful door of solid wood, a work of art in itself. Running your hand down its face tells a tale of pastoral comfort, beckoning you to come inside, to be home again. Authentic Tuscan rubblestone which lines the outside wall and fireplace exterior was meticulously crafted with hand-poured

heating, they included radiant heat throughout the 3,996 square feet of carpet, tile and wood flooring, each room outfitted with nine-zone adjustable heating. Other long-lasting elements include the home’s structure, which was built strong enough to support a replacement roof made entirely of slate if needed. The hardware used in creating the full extension kitchen drawers, and the convenient and ergonomic kitchen layout, were planned with forethought and contemporary design. A wide kitchen aisle allows two cooks to work in tandem, preparing meals together side-byside. The spacing of each component in the kitchen is conducive to comfortably fit your family or guests. Through the years, the home saw an abundance of vibrant life and growth. The Del Sesto children each found their own little spaces within the home, and each of them grew into their own within its walls. As young kids, they played outside at every opportunity, reveling in the property’s natural environment while letting their imaginations run wild. There is much to explore in a safe and secluded setting. Despite the immense effort it took to build from scratch, it was one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of their lives, and they succeeded in creating a beautiful, welcoming place for their family. For fifteen years, 1198 Glen Road has been a place of comfort, joy and togetherness. Eric and Sharneth are proud of their legacy in 1198 Glen Road, and they were excited to share their journey through this story. The home was a source of comfort for friends or family who needed a place to rest or to share an intimate conversation with someone close to them. They will always cherish the thousands of memories they created under this roof. Now that the kids have left the nest, they are ready to pass it on to a new family who will create a lifetime of new memories for themselves.

Perhaps the most striking features upon entering 1198 Glen Road are the thick wooden beams which line its ceiling. It’s immediately clear that their craftsmanship is one of a kind. Eric and Sharneth sought out a talented contractor who specialized in procuring and repurposing reclaimed lumber. Using thick beams from a 100-year-old barn in Indiana, they worked tirelessly to plan the installation, painstakingly stain each piece, and reinforce them into the ceiling and walls. This incredible effort resulted in a truly unique masterpiece of woodworking adorning the great room, family room and kitchen. While accents of the home could be altered to fit any taste, Eric and Sharneth would love to pass the home along to a new owner or family that appreciates the hardearned aesthetic of the home in its current state. Existing materials could certainly be reimagined into a chateau or Napa style with new landscaping and lighting fixtures. There’s plenty of room for change, not wed to one specific motif. The wooden beams, however, are a critical element in the living heart of this home. They are emblematic of its history, of the toil and handiwork that went into its creation, and an integral part of its structure and tradition. Many decisions which Eric and Sharneth made early on in the building process will last for generations. To avoid the dry environment which comes with forced air
