Music Contest Winner Sarah MacHarg Performing on Monday The Rotary Club of Reno held its annual Music contest on March 16th at St. John’s Presbyterian Church. We had 5 outstanding musicians from our partner schools, McQueen High and The Davidson Academy. The contest was judged by Rotary Club member Liza Maupin, Piano Technician Sandra Cooper and Honorary Member Genie Mathews. Four students competed on piano and one competed on the flute. The level of talent made the judging difficult, but ultimately, Sarah MacHarg took 1st place with her performance on piano. The contest is open to students ages 14 to 18 and each must perform a piece between three and eight minutes long. They were judged on musical ability, musical sound, stage presence, musical selection and musical empathy. Sarah MacHarg is 16 years old and in her seventh and sophomore year at the Davidson Academy of Nevada. She has been playing piano for 10 years under the instruction of Carol Taylor. In addition to playing solo, she is the pianist for the Artemisia Chamber Ensemble, a local group of high school and college age musicians that play at a variety of different venues, from coffee shops to elementary schools. Her other extracurricular interests include ballet, which she has been doing since she was four; bridge, which she learned at school through the Reno Youth Bridge program; and math competition prep through the Northern Nevada Math Club. At school, she participates in a variety of clubs including Math Club, Science Club, and Spanish Club. She is the VP of both the Davidson Academy Student Council and GECKO, the Academy’s environmental club. As for future plans, she has absolutely no idea! She likes all of the subjects, especially foreign languages; she speaks Spanish and has started learning Chinese this school year. She looks forward to learning more about the different kinds of jobs available as she continues with school. Please root Sarah on as she competes in the Area 8 contest on April 26th at Tamarack!

How To Introduce Your Guests And New Members At A Club Meeting When introducing a guest or new members during a Club meeting, the correct way is to greet the Club President, fellow Rotarians and guests, introduce yourself and state your classification, and then introduce your guest, their title and business affiliation. Please do not introduce any guest as a prospective new member or that they are looking for a position or clients.

Akha hill tribe children at the Akha Training Centre in Mae Suai, Thailand. The Akha Training Centre takes in children from 27 Akha villages. Some are orphans, and others are sent by their parents, who want them to receive an education. The facility teaches English and Thai, which helps the children function in mainstream Thai society. The Four-Way Test Of the things we think, say or do 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
