Monday’s Program Club Speech Contest

Know your Foundations! The Rotary Club of Reno is fortunate to have its own Foundation. However, sometimes it is confusing to differentiate the RRF (Reno Rotary Foundation) from the TRF (The Rotary Foundation). So, here is a quick explanation of what each is, what it does, and how it is funded. The Reno Rotary Foundation (RRF) Not all Rotary Clubs have foundations, but the Rotary Club of Reno established one in 1992 to provide the tax benefits of a 501(c)3 to members and other donors. Our Foundation is run by an 8 member Board of Trustees, elected by the club members. It is funded by each member’s first bell-ringer of the year ($100), plus $5 of each member’s birthday donation, plus the proceeds of the club’s annual Mardi Gras event. The club can designate other fundraising events to add to the Foundation, and individual members can contribute gifts throughout the year (such as by successive bell-ringers). The RRF provides your charitable dollars ($140,000 annually) for our club’s many philanthropic activities: local projects, international projects, scholarships, youth programs, etc. When you contribute to the RRF, you earn Nevada Nugget pins for each $1000 gifted. Originally these pins were only for gifts to the RRF endowment, but a new policy will award Nugget pins for all RRF gifts. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) The Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of Rotary International. When you hear about Polio Plus or read about Rotary’s projects across the globe, think TRF. The Rotary Foundation is funded by contributions from the 1.2 million Rotarians around the world. Each year our club sets goals for our donations to TRF, and the goals are met by our individual member’s contributions and some club activities. Our club sends $5 of each member’s birthday donation to the TRF each year. We also encourage each member to give at least $100 to TRF as a “sustaining member.” You can designate your second (or consecutive)

bell-ringer for the TRF or give directly to Rotary International on-line. Our air-race parking project and holiday wreath sales also go to TRF, for Polio Plus. The Rotary Foundation returns 50% of Annual Fund gifts to our District, which funds District grants and projects (such as our Most Improved Student grant this year and our District Scholarship recipient). The TRF also matches our global grants, such as the nursing school in Bwindi and the orphanage in Panama. TRF also provides for our Peace Scholar, Aimal. When you contribute to the TRF, you earn Paul Harris Fellowship pins for each $1000. For more information on the Reno Rotary Foundation and The Rotary Foundation, contact club officers or RRF President Jim Pfrommer or Club TRF chairperson Anne-Louise Bennett. And thank you for your continued generosity to both!
