‘Take A Seat’ with us Earlier in the year, we launched our ‘Take a Seat’ initiative with City of York Council and Age Friendly York. Through research conducted by Age Friendly York, older residents said they would benefit from additional places to rest their legs and that there was a real lack of toilet facilities available, when out and about in our city. We therefore came up with the idea of ‘Take a Seat’, which aims to signpost people to businesses that have a seat or facilities available for

use. Those taking part in the initiative display a sticker in their window, that indicates whether a seat, facilities or, both are available. Already, over 50 local businesses throughout York, have signed up and displayed a sticker in their window. You can see a full list of these, by visiting: https://www.homeinstead. co.uk/york/take-a-seat-initiative/ We’re delighted to have also been able to promote ‘Take A Seat’ on First Buses in York. National Playlist Day

September 22nd is National Playlist Day. A day created by Music and Dementia Charity, ‘Playlist for Life’ to raise awareness of the power of personally meaningful music for dementia. Who are Playlist For Life? Playlist for Life is a music and dementia charity founded in 2013 by writer and broadcaster Sally Magnusson after the death of her mother, Mamie, who had dementia. Their vision is simple: they want everyone with dementia to have a unique, personalised playlist and everyone who loves or cares for them to know how to use it. The benefits of a personalised playlist Over two decades of scientific research has shown that listening to a personalised playlist can improve the lives of those living with dementia. In fact, listening to music that is personally meaningful has many psychological benefits, meaning anyone can benefit from a playlist. Personalised playlists can: ◆ reduce anxiety ◆ improve your mood ◆ make difficult tasks more manageable ◆ evoke memories that can help families and carers connect. Home Instead York are delighted to be once Playlist for Life harnesses the again teaming up with Dean’s Garden Centre powerful effects of personal music to host a monthly Companionship Café. to help anyone who is affected by The Companionship Café is held on dementia, their families and carers. the second Monday of each month. Moving Minds

– a dance project for people affected by dementia Holding brightly coloured scarves that trace and extend her movement, Margaret leads a processional dance through the space. Embracing this role with exuberance and leading the group off through the studio, her arms move with energy and grace in time to the music. The session finishes and still she retains this energy as she leaves, dancing arm in arm with her husband; animated, vital, her face full of joy. On her first visit Rita refuses to remove her coat for the entire session, opting instead to sit cross-

legged, hands in pockets, avoiding eyecontact with everyone but her carer. I notice a small and private dance begin when, during the final song of the session, Rita’s right foot moves in time to the music. The following week her hands join in too. The week after, the coat is abandoned. Over the last six years, Moving Minds has witnessed the dances, great and small, that have emerged as part of the project; a venture at York St John University that invites people living with dementia, and their partners, family members or carers, into the dance studio for free weekly dance and creative movement sessions. There is a growing body of research that strongly suggests that, for people living with

conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and dementia, participating in dance activities has several physiological and psychological benefits including stress reduction, encouraging social interaction, maximizing cognitive function and reinforcing a sense of identity. The sessions are open to all levels of ability and experience, including those who may need to remain seated. There are refreshments afterwards and a valuable opportunity to sit and talk with others. Sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons from 1.30pm – 2.30pm with tea & coffee afterwards. If you or someone you know would like to try out a session you can book a place via email at movingminds@yorksj.ac.uk or call/text 07881 922343.

Priority Service Register and Locking cooker valve During a recent Care Pro Meeting we had Kate Urwin, the Yorkshire Energy Doctor along with us for an informative session on fuel poverty and all things energy safety. Kate informed us of a couple of important pieces of information, which we thought we would share with you, so you can be having a look into whether they would work well for you, or your loved one. The first was the Priority Services Register, which all our clients are eligible to sign up for, for free. The register is used when in an emergency such as, a storm or flood, which causes power or gas to go off. Everyone on the Priority Services Register, is prioritised to get power back up and running as soon as possible. To register for the Priority Services Register, please visit https:/www.northerngasnetworks.co.uk/

network-supply/priority-customers/ and enter partner code 006. Kate also let us know about a really useful safety device, which we’ve never come across before! The Locking Cooker Valve. This simple safety device is fitted to existing gas cooker pipework and allows a Care Pro or relative to control gas supply using a key. When the valve is locked, the gas supply to the cooker is stopped eliminating the risk of the cooker being unintentionally turned on or left on, giving peace of mind that the cooker can’t be used, when a Care Pro or relative leave the house or room. For more information on how to get a Locking Cooker Valve fitted, free of charge, please visit: www. northerngasnetworks.co.uk/network-supply/lockingcooker-valve
