Celebrations for Jenny and Andy Jenny, our Lead CAREGiver, had a double celebration last month. Jenny has completed one year’s service with us and she was also presented with her City & Guilds accredited certificate for Dementia Care. Andy also celebrated a milestone with Home Instead last month, with him reaching three years’ service. He therefore got his hands on a silver badge!
Never too late to learn for CAREGiver Debbie Debbie (left) our longest serving CAREGiver of 9 years, showing it’s never too late to stop learning! Debbie is pictured with her City & Guilds accredited Dementia training certificate and her Care Certificate. Big well done to Luci, Lorna, Barbara and Inga who also got their hands on their Care Certificates last month.

Important data protection information Some of you may be aware of the current changes in legislation that are due to take place in May regarding data protection (GDPR). Because of this, we have been required to introduce a few changes to be in line with the new regulations. You will have received an email from Sarah at payroll last month regarding changes to payslips. Going forward, to be able to access your payslips you will need to enter your date of birth as a password. We are now also limited to the amount of information we can share with you, this means that all care plans will only be able to be emailed out. These will be password protected and will change on a monthly basis. Because of this we will no longer be able to print out care plans to give to you, to take away. If you want a hard copy of care plans, you should come into the office, and take the time to read through the care plan whilst in the office, this should then be shredded before you leave.
Method • Turn the oven to fan 200C/ conventional 220C/gas 7. Heat half the oil in a flameproof roasting tin or ovenproof sauté pan. Brown the lamb for 2 minutes on each side, then lift out of the pan and set aside. Add the rest of
the oil to the pan, add the potatoes, then fry for 4-5 minutes, until starting to brown. Add the rosemary and garlic, then return the lamb to the pan, too. • Roast in the oven for 20 minutes, then scatter over the tomatoes and drizzle with the balsamic vinegar. Place back in the oven for 5 minutes, until the tomatoes just begin to split. Remove from the oven and serve straight from the dish. Dementia Resource As part of a new dementia resource for CAREGivers the office now has available a range of books for you to borrow. Included are titles such as ‘Elizabeth is Missing’ by Emma Healey, a story of an elderly lady with dementia on the trail of a historic murder mystery and ‘Somebody I Used to Know’ by Wendy Mitchell which is an extraordinary book about Wendy’s personal journey after being diagnosed with early onset dementia. Both are cracking good reads and change your view on what dementia means for people. Contact Karen if you’d like to borrow either book and more will be added to the resource over the coming months.
Film Club
We are introducing a monthly screening of the DVDs and the first one will take place on Thursday 3rd May 2018 at 1pm (and the really good news is that if you join us 90 minutes will be added to your schedule, so you will be paid for attending!). So sign up with Andy and join us for popcorn and watch David Walliams, Jennifer Saunders and Tom Courtney in Grandpa’s Great Escape, which is described as so good it’s criminal.
Meet Jojo, she was the 1000th person to like our Facebook page. We got her into the office last month to give her some Home Instead goodies to thank her! Have you not liked us on Facebook yet? Find us here: https://www.facebook.com/ homeinsteadyork/
Andy’s Advice
Well done to CAREGiver Julia who last month ran the 10km obstacle course at Normanby Hall. Water jumps, hay stacks, rope climbs and mud lots of mud! – Looks great fun! What have you been up to?
As you will all be aware your new holiday entitlement started on 1st April, running until 31st March. To avoid disappointment, book your leave through the CAREGiver website well in advance so we can ensure your clients are covered. Try to avoid booking holidays away before this has been authorised by the office. Holiday entitlement does not carry over to the following year, make sure you plan efficiently so you don’t miss out.
Let us know and send us some pictures and maybe you could feature in future editions of The Companion.
PEAQ Week – Dates for your diary! Our staff survey this year will be held at the office from 4th to 8th June. Keep an eye out for next month’s Companion and your email for more information on events throughout that week.
Enjoy Dementia Friendly screenings Last month our CAREGiver Gill took her client Gina to one of the Dementia Friendly Screenings of Love Me Tender at City Screen Picturehouses in York. Screenings take place on the last Monday of every month at 1.15pm with free tea, coffee and biscuits served from 12.45pm in the upstairs lounge. This gives people the chance to meet and socialise with others and get to know the space. Dementia Friendly screenings seek to provide a fun and inclusive
experience to enable people living with dementia, their families and carers to attend the cinema in a safe and welcoming environment. Open to everyone, the screenings are enhanced to suit the needs of people living with dementia: the lights are left on low, the volume is reduced, and staff are Dementia Friends. Tickets cost £4, accompanying carers go free. For more information visit: www.picturehouses.co.uk
To all our smart phone users! The NHS have a useful Safeguarding App which is free to download. It contains a range of useful information such as definitions of abuse, as well as contact numbers for local safeguarding teams which all CAREGivers should know. The app can be accessed here: for google accounts - https://play.google. com/store/apps/details?id=com.antbits. nhsSafeguardingGuide&hl=en_GB for apple accounts search in app store, NHS Safeguarding guide
