York & Ryedale

Watch out… We will be celebrating our anniversary with monthly giveaways and competitions for all our CAREGivers in the next edition of The Companion

Well done everyone with the cake baking! On June 13th Home Instead York & Ryedale hosted a Cupcake Day to raise funds to help beat dementia. We asked our CAREGivers to either bring us in a bake or to get creative in the kitchen with their clients. In the average time it takes to bake a batch of cakes, six people in the UK will develop

dementia. It is now the leading cause of death in England and Wales, overtaking both cancer and heart disease. Raising money on Cupcake Day can help to fund pioneering research, crucial support services and vital care. For every bake we received, we donated £5 to the Alzheimer’s Society. In total we raised

an amazing £75 so a big thank you to all those who took part whether it was baking, eating or just donating! It was a tough decision as we had so many to choose from, but our CAREGiver Charlotte was voted our Star Baker with her yummy Jammy Dodger Cupcakes!

Our top tips for staying cool

the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems. In particular, very hot weather can make heart and breathing problems worse. Knowing how to keep cool during long periods of hot weather can help save lives and it’s mostly common sense. The main risks posed by a heatwave are dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. To keep cool here are some useful tips: ■ Shut windows and close curtains when it is hotter outside than in. You can open them for ventilation when it’s cooler.

■ Stay out of the sun particularly between 11am and 3pm. ■ Keep rooms cool and have cool baths and showers or splash with cool water. ■ Drink cold drinks regularly but avoid tea, coffee and alcohol. ■ Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors. If someone does feel unwell, get them somewhere cool to rest. Give them plenty of fluids to drink and seek medical help if symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, weakness, dizziness or cramps get worse or don’t go away.

When it’s HOT, HOT HOT! Most of us welcome hot weather, but when it’s too hot for too long there can be health risks. If a heatwave hits this summer, make sure the hot weather doesn’t harm you or anyone you know. The very young, the elderly and the seriously ill are

EMAR – IQ Timecard App We hope those of you who have been using the IQ Mobile App for logging in and out at clients’ homes are finding it useful, those who haven’t yet downloaded it we would recommend you do so. Just go to the app store and type ‘IQ Timecard’ and follow the instructions from there. Over this next month we will be starting to roll out using the IQ App for EMAR (electronic MAR charts). EMAR we hope will replace the current paper MAR charts, and therefore hopefully make the process of giving medication to clients even simpler. Please keep an eye out for further correspondence regarding this over the coming weeks.

CAREGivers celebrate long service Big well done to Gail and Nicola who have both celebrated completing long service with Home Instead York & Ryedale recently. The two of them completed 4 and 2 years respectively. Both are fantastic CAREGivers and we look forward to having them as part of our brilliant CAREGiver team for many more years to come!
