Welcome to our new scheduler

This month sees the introduction of our second scheduler… welcome Julia Kirkman As the Home Instead York business enters its 10th year, we are keen to maintain and improve the standards that saw us achieve a CQC Outstanding rating last year. Having a second scheduler will allow us to divide York into West and East, making more manageable areas. Each area will have its own dedicated Care Manager, Scheduler and Key Player Assistant. This will improve our responsiveness and communication for CAREGivers and clients alike. Annette Dowson and Julia Kirkman, our schedulers, will let you know which area you belong to when they send out your April schedules. Going forward you then will need to contact your relevant Care Manager Carol Hirst or Lorna Hoegh or your scheduler with any concerns or questions. We will also soon be strengthening the office team with another administrator. The remaining office team members will continue to provide support for all CAREGivers and clients alike from both areas. I am sure you wish everyone success in their new roles.

We absolutely love seeing what you have been up to with your clients and we’ve been sent across some great pictures from CAREGivers recently. Lynn has been busy crocheting with her client Kathe, together they made this fantastic blanket. Julia and her client Joyce made the most of the early March sunshine as they visited The Rocking Horse Shop in Fangfoss. Joyce loved it as she remembered going there with her grandchildren a few years ago! Joyce thoroughly enjoyed the drive out, but had a bit of trouble with glare from the sun so she borrowed a pair of Julia’s sunnies! And finally, Lisa took this lovely smiley picture of her client Pat, during their recent lunch trip to Bella Italia, looks delicious! Don’t forget to email us your pictures across if you’ve been out and about!

Positive feedback aids success It’s difficult to believe that ten years have flown by since we first opened the doors of Home Instead York in 2009. In that time, we have visited nearly 800 clients and provided hundreds of thousands of hours of care (1st Feb, 168,000 hours). As an organisation we have gone from strength to strength culminating in our ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission in November 2018. Just as important is the continuing positive feedback we receive from clients and their families. This feedback goes beyond complimenting our service on a job well done, and although that is fantastic to hear, it’s the heartfelt thanks we receive for the difference we have made that grabs my attention. It’s a common occurrence for me to read emails or letters from clients’ families about the impact we have had on the quality of someone’s life, whether that’s the client or the client’s family who have had respite from sometimes overwhelming caring responsibilities. I feel privileged to do a job that is a small part of making that positive impact on others and I hope you feel the same way. The world of health and social care has changed significantly over the last ten years. “Austerity” and the

political climate have had their impact. The ageing population has started to influence availability of services for older people. Home Instead has developed, adapted and learned a huge amount along the way and I am sure the future holds even more change. The population will continue to age as ‘Baby Boomers’ approach the age of our client group, the government will have to respond to the huge challenges facing the health and social care system and technology will have a growing influence on the way we work. There will inevitably be challenges and opportunities for us all ahead, but Home Instead intends to be at the forefront, leading the change that is required. One thing that I am confident of is that the key factor in our success for the last ten years will also be key to our success in the next ten years. That key factor is our people, so thank you for being part of the team and I hope you’re as excited about the future of Home Instead as I am. Luke Norbury, Director

Book review

Another addition to our CAREGiver book resource

Three Things About Elsie by Joanna Cannon A story about forever friends on the twisting path of life. As we uncover their buried secrets, we learn how the fine threads of humanity connect us all. Eighty-fouryear-old Florence has fallen in her flat at Cherry Tree Home for the Elderly. As she waits to be rescued, she thinks about her friend Elsie and wonders if a terrible secret from their past is about to come to light. If the charming new resident is who he claims to be, why does he look exactly like a man who died sixty years ago? If you’d like to borrow a copy, donate a book or recommend for the CAREGiver Books to Borrow, contact Karen.
