May 2017
PEAQ week is almost upon us!
The annual Home Instead survey will be held at the office from June 5th-9th this year has an extra twist. As well as the national prize of high street shopping vouchers and a local prize of a restaurant voucher, we will also have our very own PEAQ n Mix to help yourselves to… Yum Yum. Clients will also be receiving a hard copy of the PEAQ questionnaire. It would be greatly appreciated if you could encourage them to complete their survey. Keep an eye on your emails for more information over the coming weeks!
Updated CAREGiver Guide We have updated your CAREGiver guide on the CAREGiver website www.caregiversupport.co.uk. Be sure to check it out, to ensure you’re up to date with all your current guidelines! You will find the updated guide under the useful documents section. As a special one off, we have decided to print The Companion and post each of you a copy of May’s edition. We would like you to be more involved in the creation of upcoming editions. Let us have your feedback. Do you read it? What could we improve upon? What do you like to see? Send us any interesting stories or events you feel others may be interested in. Every CAREGiver is emailed a copy of The Companion on a monthly basis, make sure you check your folders. If you have not received a copy, let Jack know. The Companion is an important communication tool between the office and CAREGivers with information you may need to be aware of. You can easily access back issues of The Companion on the CAREGiver website www.caregiversupport.co.uk and copies are also available to pick up from the office.

Doggy Bags! and other creatures This month we held a CAREGivers pet’s competition called ‘Doggy Bags’. CAREGivers were tasked with sending in pictures of their pets, the only catch being, the picture must feature a Home Instead bag. The best entry would win a prize for their pet. Ann-Marie, Director of Home Instead Senior Care York, hadn’t seen any of the entries so she was drafted in as guest judge. As you can see, we had some fantastic entries and choosing a winner was incredibly hard! But in the end Ann-Marie decided the winner was Julie Bell and her dog Oskar, we are sure you can agree Oskar is a very deserving winner!

Welcome to our new CAREgivers
Say Hello to Ayesha, Val, Tricia, Joanne, Eman and Emma, our new CAREGivers who earlier this month successfully completed our CAREGiver introduction programme. Be sure to make them feel welcome if they are sent out to shadow with you.
Midnight Walk for St Leonard’s Hospice
New Classes at the Poppleton Centre The Poppleton Community Centre have just introduced a new range of exercise sessions to suit all ages and abilities. There’s Indoor Carpet Bowls on Friday afternoons from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. You don’t need experience and can just go along and watch if you prefer. Walking football is just a slower version of the beautiful game and is a great way to socialise and rediscover the joy of the sport. The sessions are available on Wednesdays between 1 pm – 2 pm in the sports hall.
Gentle Aerobics sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. The sessions are a gentle way to exercise and raise your pulse rate without being over stressed. Afterwards you can relax and unwind in the Café Refresh with a hot or cold drink. You can join each session for a weekly donation of £2. To find out more contact Beth on reception, email info@ poppletoncentre-org.uk or telephone 01904 797478. The Poppleton Centre is on Main Street in Upper Poppleton, YO26 6JT.
Take this opportunity to walk the historic streets of York after hours. Claim the streets in the name of St Leonard’s Hospice on the 10th June 2017. This year the event is open to all so get a team together and paint the town neon! Starting from York College, the route is a 6.5-mile circular route taking you across the Knavesmire, along the river Ouse and directly to the sights and sounds of York City Centre. A team of friendly marshals will be on hand along the way to ensure everyone is safe and having a great time. People are encouraged to GLOW for St Leonard's on the night, whether that is with a single glow stick or head-to-toe neon. To book go to www.stleonardshospice.org.uk.
Andy’s Advice
Speeding and parking fines North Yorkshire Police have deployed six new safety camera vans across the county. The new, more agile vehicles are more suited to hardto-reach locations and will not only detect speeding drivers, but will also identify antisocial driving such as seat belt offences and drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel, so watch out for them! The vans are equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology and can easily be deployed to wherever they are needed. The local press often publishes their location for the coming week.

Parking fines are also on the increase so be careful where you park when on calls. There is advice on the care plan on access and parking arrangements so never take a chance and park where you shouldn’t. If you get either a speeding or parking fine when going to or whilst on a call you are very unlikely to have it cancelled on the basis that you are a CAREGiver and Home Instead will not be able to pay the fine for you. Be careful and keep an eye on your speed, driving style, use of mobile phones and parking choices.
Care Plans are a vital tool we use to provide the high-quality care our clients expect. You are the experts around your clients’ care. If you feel information is missing or needs to be added to the care plan drop Carol an email outlining the relevant information. Additionally, let us know if the journal needs replacing to keep it looking fresh and our brand professional.
