November 2019

Companionship Café is a big hit! It was lovely to see some new faces at the last meeting and thank you to everyone that attended. We are delighted to get involved and work alongside the team at Dean’s Garden Centre. The aim of the Café is to encourage older people to get out and socialize, make new friends and get involved with fun activities. We feel it is important to create an environment whereby people have a regular place where they can attend for companionship as loneliness can be very difficult for the elderly. Simply having a chat over a cuppa can enrich a life! A special thank you to Jim and Susan for bringing their amazing artwork to the last Companionship Café. They are two incredibly talented people and have donated money raised from their artwork from the last meeting to their daughter Charlotte, who ran on Sunday 20th October in the Yorkshire Marathon to raise money for SASH which is a registered charity preventing homelessness in young people aged 16-25 throughout North and East Yorkshire. When young people are facing homelessness, SASH can offer them a spare room in a safe and stable place to stay in the home of a trained volunteer, and support them to move forward. Come along to the next meeting, everyone that attends are greeted by our friendly Home Instead staff and CAREGivers and made to feel welcome, it’s a lovely environment and a place to make new friends! The next meeting is on Monday 11th November, so why not come along with your friends, relatives and clients and have a cuppa or you can play Dominos and Cards.

The meeting is informal and no cost apart from the refreshments you would like to purchase. Everyone that attends will be given a raffle ticket, for their chance to win a drink and a cake of their choice. The next meeting dates are:

Dates: 11th November, 9th December. Meeting Time: 10am-11.30am in the Bothy restaurant at Dean’s Garden Centre. If you would like more information call Zoe at Home Instead 01904 690884.

Costa Vouchers Don’t forget to pop in to the office to collect your 10th Anniversary Celebration Costa Voucher! Our little thank you for being part of our great team! Julie and Tracy have collected theirs already! We don’t want you to miss out on coffee and cake!

Eye-poppingly realistic CGI brings to life Disney’s cherished animation about a lion cub’s brave journey from pride outcast to proud king. Jon Favreau’s immersive vision gathers a majestic cast on the African savannah to honour all the seminal moments and iconic songs of the original film. James Earl Jones reprises his role as the wise and just King Mufasa, while Donald Glover is Simba, the young prince who takes his royal destiny to heart. Chiwetel Ejiofor lends his voice to Scar, the king’s scheming brother, who forms his own plans to take the throne. City Screen will serve complimentary tea, filter coffee and biscuits upstairs in the Sky Lounge from 12.45pm. Tickets are £4 per person, with free tickets for accompanying carers. If you would like a wheelchair space, please do inform Cath Sharp at the cinema as spaces are limited. (cath.s@ picturehouses.co.uk ) Dementia-Friendly Screenings are open to all but especially suited for people with dementia and their family, friends and carers. Book for The Lion King on 0871 902 5726, or online at www.picturehouses.co.uk or in person at City Screen at the Coney Street Box Office.

Pop in and pick up some Twiddle Mitts for your client We have received a very kind donation of Twiddle Mitts from a local knitting group. The knitted mitts have buttons, beads and other objects sewn on to offer a calming distraction to those with dementia. The Mitts also have the added bonus of keeping your hands warm in the colder months! Please feel free to pop into the office to pick one up for your clients!

One Year Service Awards for the Tracys‌ and Janet Tracy appears to be a popular name for a CAREGiver and we are lucky enough to have 3 of them here at Home Instead York & Ryedale. Tracy B, Tracy L, and Tracey S are all celebrating their 1 year service with us along with our lovely CAREGiver Janet. Congrats guys!

Winter Check List Now that winter is here we’ve put together a check list to make sure your clients are ready for the cold winter days and nights.  Make sure their heating has been serviced. The general advice is they should do this annually.  Put a torch handy in case of power cuts and a radio with extra batteries.  Ensure they have plenty of layers of clothing to wear, warm slippers for indoors and grippy shoes if they are heading out.  Encourage regular hot drinks. It’s a good idea to leave a flask close by before you leave.  It’s important to have at least one hot meal a day. Eating regularly will help keep energy levels up.  Make sure that the room your client spends most of their time in is warm throughout the day.  Heat their bedroom before they go to bed. Set their timer for heating to come on before they get up and switch off when they go to bed.  Use an electric blanket or a hot water bottle, but not at the same time.  Encourage them to wear bed socks, thermal underwear and a hat in bed if it’s really cold.
