Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale 10th Anniversary Celebrations We recently had a bit of a do to thank some of the organisations who have worked with us over the last 10 years. The Lord Mayor of York made an appearance and so did the local MP as well as the Alzheimer’s Society and St Leonard’s Hospice.

Our office was full on that day but we would like to thank you, our wonderful CAREGivers, for the last 10 years and so there’s another way we would like to share a piece of cake with you... You will be able to take someone you love to Costa

for coffee and cake on Home Instead as a little thank you for being part of our great team. Pop into the office when convenient to collect your voucher! We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Fall back – Spring forward

Don’t forget the clocks will be going back one hour at 2am on Sunday 27 October, meaning you will get one extra hour in bed! Please make sure you remind clients to change their clocks, and why not use this as a reminder to check smoke alarms in the house?

Our next Companionship Café Following the successful launch of our Companionship Café held in The Bothy at Dean’s Garden Centre last month, you and your clients are all invited to our next meeting on Monday 14th October between 10am and 11.30am.

It’s a lovely environment and a great place to make new friends! A couple of attendees from our first meeting are keen artists and have very kindly offered to show some of their art work to the group. The meeting is very informal and there

is no cost apart from the refreshments you would like to purchase. Everyone who attends will be given a raffle ticket for a chance to win a drink and a cake of their choice. It would be lovely to see some new faces so why not tell your clients and pop along!

Ultimate Christmas Masquerade Boccia at York Indoor Bowls Club Boccia (pronounced bot-cha) is a Paralympic sport with no Olympic equivalent and is similar to bowls. York Indoor Bowls Club, 302 Thanet Road, Dringhouses, York run Boccia on a Wednesday between 1pm and 2pm. The cost is £2 per session (the 1st session is free) with all equipment provided free. People with many different disabilities and abilities play together and they have very caring volunteers who make them feel welcome. Most of the players come about 12 noon and have a meal before they play and then stay for tea/coffee and a chat before going their separate ways. If you think this would be of interest to you or any of your clients then please drop in and take a look, you would be very welcome!

Home Instead Christmas Party 2019 It’s not long to go to Christmas so our Christmas Party is booked! The Ultimate Christmas Masquerade Party is planned at Fairfield Manor/Mercure Hotel (Shipton Road) on Saturday 14th December 2019. Home Instead will make a contribution to the ticket price so it will only be £19.95 per person for a 3 course dinner, disco and dancing. There is also a rumour of fire eaters, stilt walkers and more general merriment! We hope you can join us! Please let Karen know asap to secure your ticket!

9th–15th October

Baby Loss Awareness Week My name is Kim Reilly and I will have worked for Home Instead for 4 years this month. I love the variety of my job and as one of my clients says, “Well done you’ve stuck at it!” In my spare time I co-run a charity based at York Hospital. It is called York Sands (Stillbirth and neonatal death society) and I have been involved with this charity for about 20 years. I got in touch for help as my first daughter Nicole Louise was stillborn on 7th July 1979. She was full term at 42 weeks and I didn’t even see her. I finally sought some help and soon found myself heavily involved with York Sands and later co-running the group with Bev Shelley who is a Bereavement Midwife. Bev does everything related to Sands at the hospital, and I run the community side of the group involving home visits to families who have lost their babies. I help them through the grieving process both through my own experience and through a Counselling Course that I completed at night school. I also host a monthly meeting at the hospital to help families. York Sands have spent the last 4 years fundraising for a new Bereavement Room where families can go to spend time with their babies, having photos taken, making hand and foot prints and to say goodbye in their own time. I am proud to say that by way of jumble sales, coffee mornings, sky diving, marathons and the 3 Peaks Challenge, York Sands donated £146,000 towards the £250,000 refurbishment costs which will be named The Butterfly Room. October 9th – 15th is classed as Baby Loss Awareness Week and we will be hosting a stall at Tesco’s Clifton Moor on Saturday 12th October, talking to people about what we do at York Sands and raising awareness. It would be lovely to see you there. I am super proud of the work I do and love the fact that whilst giving back I am helping other families in a way that I wasn’t and all in memory of my daughter Nicole Louise born sleeping 7.7.79. Life moves on in the only way possible with the birth of my darling granddaughter “Miss Sassy Pants” – Freya Nicole.

Spare a thought for the elderly this Bonfire Night! Bonfire Night is a particularly frightening time for the elderly due to the associated loud noises, so take extra care when hosting parties and setting off fireworks, and if possible pre-warn any elderly or vulnerable neighbours in advance.

We don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun, but fireworks are explosives and can be very dangerous. Find a family friendly event in your area and look out for each other. Most importantly have a great, safe Bonfire Night!

It’s a good idea to choose a suitable time to let your fireworks off or light your bonfires, make sure to avoid loud noise after 11.00pm. Fireworks should be let off in an open space as the sound can bounce off buildings and enclosed spaces, frightening elderly people.
