October 2020

Amble holiday home availability extended Great news... we’ve decided to extend the availability of our company holiday home up in Amble, Northumberland up until the end of November! Given the restrictions in place in travelling abroad this year, we’ve had plenty of you already making the most of the holiday home for

your 2020 ‘staycation’. You can book the holiday home Monday-Friday or Friday-Monday, with the only cost being a small fee of £75 to contribute to the running costs of the home. Give Jack a ring or drop him an email to enquire about booking now!

PPE Reminder A reminder that you should be wearing your face masks for all calls, unless alternative arrangements have been discussed and agreed with the office. If you need to pick up additional PPE, please contact the office so we can prepare what is needed.

New apprentice joins office team We’d like to say a huge ‘welcome’ to our new Apprentice Business Administrator, Lauren! In her new role, Lauren will be responsible for supporting the office team with administrative tasks and helping things to run as smoothly as possible. Lauren will also be working towards completing her NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration with York College! Having come from a retail background, this field of work is new to Lauren, but she understands the importance of the role that Home Instead plays in supporting clients in their own homes and she can draw upon great experience from her close relationship she has with her own G randparents!

Welcome Lauren!

We had a surprise visit from Morrisons Last month, they very kindly delivered some boxes of biscuits for the team to enjoy and told us all about their new ‘Doorstep Delivery’ service. Morrisons are playing their part in helping the local community by setting up a Doorstop Delivery service for people who are elderly or are unable to get to the shops, vulnerable, isolating or shielding. To order your delivery, simply write out your shopping list including any of Morrisons fresh Market Street produce and call 0345 611 6111 to place your order. If you order by 5pm on Monday to Saturday they will get your delivery to you by the next day!

Home Instead team take part in ‘Memory Walks’ Last month was the annual Memory Walk for the Alzheimer’s Society. We asked our team to send us a picture of them out on their walk, with family, on their own, or out with a client and for every picture we received we would donate £5 to the Alzheimer’s Society. We had some fantastic pictures sent in – here’s just a selection of some of the best ones! So far we have raised £80 for the Alzheimer’s Society. If you would be interested in donating towards a world that is better suited for dementia, we have set up a ‘Just Giving’ page. Any donations would be greatly appreciated, just visit: http://ow.ly/8R1P50BqYHy.

Last month we took part in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The annual event is the charity’s biggest fundraising event, helping them to raise an incredible £27.5m in 2019. Although things were a little different this year and we could not actually host our own coffee morning event like we have done in previous years, that did not stop us from wanting to be involved. This year, we tasked our CAREGivers with sending in photos of them and their clients in the kitchen putting their baking skills to the test and for each one received, we would donate £5 to Macmillan Cancer Support. It was lovely to see so many great entries, including these from client John who whipped up a delicious looking sponge cake, and client Barbara, who had seen an advert about the coffee morning and wanted to take part, so with the help of CAREGiver Clare, they made an apple and blackberry pie, using apples from the tree in Barbara’s garden! Huge thank you to all those who sent in photos, it was great to see so many people getting involved and helping us to raise over £80 for a fabulous cause.

The Jorvik Yorkies kind donation Late last month we had a visit from local scout, Bill who kindly donated Yorkie bars for all our clients to enjoy. Bill was meant to be part of a team of 36 scouts ‘The Jorvik Yorkies’ representing North Yorkshire on a trip to the European Scout Jamboree in Poland, back in June. Unfortunately, the trip had to be postponed until 2021 due to COVID. Each of ‘The Jorvik Yorkies’ had to raise their own funds for the trip and they were tasked with taking things that represented York. Nestlé therefore very kindly donated some of their Yorkie Bars. As ‘The Jorvik Yorkies’ could no longer go on their trip, they thought that it would be better if people in York benefitted from the chocolate bars, so they got in touch with us about donating some for our clients.

Firework season – pet safety

Raising awareness of undernourishment During October we joined BAPEN and the Malnutrition Task Force in raising awareness amongst the CAREGivers about the risks of undernourishment in the over 65’s and the benefits of a healthy balanced diet. Malnutrition is estimated to affect 3 million people within the UK, with 1/3rd of them being the over 65’s. For those later in life, malnutrition can have complex health repercussions. Over the course of a week, e-learning was made available to all CAREGivers, useful handout guides and further support found from the Malnutrition Task Forces and BAPEN websites along with interaction on social media, sharing some best practice, helpful techniques and favourite recipes. For more information visit: https://www. malnutritiontaskforce.org.uk/

Animals have very acute hearing and loud bangs and whistles may cause them pain in their ears. Nearly 50% of cats and dogs get stressed when they hear fireworks and many owners are not sure what they can do to help so here are a few tips for you. Provide a den or hiding place for your pet with lots of bedding. Keep your pets indoors and walk your dog early on before fireworks are likely to start. Reduce firework noise by keeping windows shut and curtains closed. Provide distraction such as a new toy and put on the TV or music to mask the noise. Don’t scold them as they will only become more distressed. Try not to leave them alone when fireworks are going off. Let your pet pace or hide if they want to – it’s their way of dealing with their anxiety. Stay calm and relaxed, act normally and give lots of praise for calm behaviour. It’s OK to cuddle and stroke your pet if it helps them relax, but if they prefer to hide under your bed, then let them do this instead. And don’t forget smaller animals, birds and horses can also get stressed. For more pet advice look at www.bluecross.org.uk
