Home Instead makes Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For list Home Instead Senior Care has been named in The Sunday Times 100 Best Small Companies to Work For, for a second year in a row. The company ranks as the 87th best small company nationally and is the only home care agency to be listed. The recognition focuses on Home Instead Senior Care’s 55-strong national office team who are based in Warrington, Cheshire. This team of business specialists supports our franchise network of over 195 local offices across the UK. Martin Jones, managing director of Home Instead, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been named as one of the top 100 Best Small Companies for a second year running. “Everything we do at Home Instead is centred around our people. As an organisation we want to be recognised

for providing the very best care in the world and the only way we can achieve that is by fully investing in our staff to maximise their potential. “Our people are our greatest asset – they are responsible for taking our aims, objectives, business model and aspirations and turning them into reality on the ground for the benefit of families and communities. Investing in our people means they’re happy and motivated to build strong relationships with our franchisees who are in turn inspired to deliver outstanding care in the UK. “Being in the top 100 for a second year is a tremendous achievement and I’m proud to be part of an organisation that values its people so highly.”

6 estrength xercises for • and

balance

Try these six simple exercises two or three times a week – every day if you like – and you should soon notice improvements to your coordination and balance.

• Make sure the chair you use is sturdy • Wear supportive shoes • If you experience chest pain, dizziness or severe shortness of breath, stop and call your GP or call 111 • A slight soreness the day after is quite normal

Heel Raises

Heel-Toe Stand

Stand tall, holding the back of a sturdy kitchen-type chair or kitchen sink, then lift your heels off the floor, taking your weight onto your big toes. Hold for three seconds, then lower with control. Repeat 10 times.

Stand tall, with one hand on your support. Put one foot directly in front of the other to make a straight line. Look ahead, take your hand off the support and balance for 10 seconds. Take the front foot back to hip width apart. Then place the other foot in front and balance for 10 seconds.

Toe Raises Stand tall holding the same support, then raise your toes – taking your weight on your heels. Don’t stick your bottom out. Hold for three seconds, then lower with control. Repeat 10 times.

Heel-Toe Walking Stand tall, with one hand on a support like a kitchen cabinet. Look ahead and walk 10 steps forwards, placing one foot directly in front of the other so that the feet form a straight line. Aim for a steady walking action. Take the feet back to hip width apart, turn around and repeat the steps in the other direction.

Sit to Stand Sit tall near the front of a chair with your feet slightly back. Lean forwards slightly and stand up (with hands on the chair if needed). Step back until your legs touch the chair then slowly lower yourself back into the chair. Repeat 10 times. Find a wealth of health information at saga.co.uk/falls

One-Leg Stand Stand close to your support and hold it with one hand. Balance on one leg, keeping the support knee soft and your posture upright. Hold the position for 10 seconds. Repeat on the other leg.

Out and about with some of our clients We absolutely love seeing what our CAREGivers have been up to with their clients, here’s a few pictures that some of our CAREGivers have sent in recently. Lynn has been busy crocheting with her client Kathe, together they made this fantastic blanket. Julia and her client Joyce made the most of the early March sunshine as they visited The Rocking Horse Shop in Fangfoss, Joyce loved it as she remembered going there with her grandchildren a few years ago! Joyce thoroughly enjoyed the drive out,but had a bit of trouble with glare from the sun so she borrowed a pair of Julia’s sunnies! And finally, Lisa took this lovely smiley picture of her client Pat, during their recent lunch trip to Bella Italia, looks delicious! Interested in organising a trip out? Give us a ring on 01904 690884 to add some extra time onto your schedule.

Wellbeing Café is the Way Forward Home Instead York directors Luke and Ann-Marie were invited to visit the Wellbeing Café run by Dementia Forward in Clements Hall, York. These Wellbeing Cafés are intended to provide a drop in service to people in the early and moderate stages of dementia. People can attend on their own or with their family or carer, and enjoy a wide range of activities in a friendly and relaxed environment with people who understand. Despite the snow and ice outside, the café was well attended, which shows how much people value the

service. The group was very welcoming and after lunch, tea and cake, the dominoes came out and there was even a game of sitting football thanks to York City FC Foundation. It was lovely to see such a welcoming and supportive environment and hear first hand how people and their families in York are dealing with dementia. If you would like to find out more about Dementia Forward and their Wellbeing Cafés in York and other areas of North Yorkshire contact Dementia Forward.
