Home Instead planning for two new Registered Managers Home Instead Senior Care York, currently the only ‘Outstanding’ rated home care provider in York, last month took the first steps to having two brand new registered managers with regulatory body, The Care Quality Commission (CQC). Kerry Galloway (right), had the fantastic news that her application to be one of Home Instead’s registered managers has been accepted by CQC. Along with this, Lorna Hoegh (left), completed her application and is hoping to also be officially registered within a few weeks. Kerry and Lorna both started with Home Instead originally as CAREGivers back in 2018 and 2015, respectively. Since then, through their hard work and commitment to the care they provide, Kerry and Lorna moved into Care Manager roles, where they have been for over a year now managing the East and West areas of York. Carol Hirst, current registered Manager of Home Instead in York, will be steadily reducing her hours as she heads towards retirement, and so having Kerry and Lorna registered now, means they can work together, plan for the future and ensure the York based Home Care Provider can continue to provide CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated, person centred support to their elderly clients.

Keep cool this Summer Most of us welcome the hot weather, but when it’s too hot for too long there can be health risks. The elderly and the seriously ill are the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems. Knowing how to keep cool and hydrated during long periods of hot weather can help save lives. Here’s some useful tips to remain healthy during the warmer weather:

• Shut windows and close curtains when it is hotter outside than in. You can open them for ventilation when it’s cooler. • Stay out of the sun particularly between 11am and 3pm. • Keep rooms cool and have cool baths and showers or splash with cool water. • Drink cold drinks regularly but avoid

tea, coffee and alcohol. • Wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat if you go outdoors. If someone does feel unwell, get them somewhere cool to rest. Give them plenty of fluids to drink and seek medical help if symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, weakness, dizziness or cramps get worse or don't go away.

Request for Research Volunteers A new social care research study

Many older people pay privately for social care. When trying to find that social care for the first time, some people find that navigating the care system to be a stressful and confusing process. Local authorities are expected to provide help and information to assist, but in reality these ‘self-funders’ and their families are often left to ‘go it alone’. This can result in families making big decisions, at a very challenging time, with little or no support. What can we do to make things better? The University of York is looking at how people find, choose and arrange care, for a loved one or for themselves. We are looking to speak to families of older people paying privately for social care

and/or the older person getting care. We are also interested in speaking to people who might need care in the future. Our research will ask people what is important when they make choices about social care. The study will use a number of different ways to find out your views, including by phone and online. The University is delighted to be partnering with Home Instead in York to give local people the chance to contribute to this important study. You may receive further information from Home Instead shortly, but in the meantime, if you would like to find more information, or would like to volunteer, please contact Rowan Jasper to find out more on rowan.jasper@york.ac.uk or 07385 341573.

 Roast in the oven for 40 - 45 minutes (200°C, 180°C fan or Gas Mark 6) or until the chicken is cooked through and the vegetables are tender. Top Tips  You can use any other seasonal root vegetables of your choice to this dish, such as butternut squash or sweet potato, or use thyme as an alternative to rosemary.  You could also add a few whole unpeeled garlic cloves to the vegetables, then simply squeeze out the delicious soft roasted garlic at the end of cooking, or try adding wedges of lemon to the roasting tin after 30 minutes.  This is a versatile dish and the chicken can easily be substituted for other meat, such as lamb chops or sausages.  Remember to use a roasting tin which is large enough for the vegetables to sit in one layer – if it is too small, the veg will steam instead of roasting. Lockdown birthday celebrations for client Margaret Margaret, client of Home Instead Senior Care York, earlier this month celebrated her 85th birthday. Unfortunately, given the current circumstances in place, Margaret’s

family were unable to pay her a visit. They were however, incredibly grateful to receive a couple of photos sent to us by Margaret’s

CAREGiver Cath, which she took on the day. Despite the lock down measures it looks like Margaret still managed to have a fantastic birthday.

Wishing our CAREGiver Daphne a happy retirement CAREGiver of Home Instead Senior Care York, Daphne, came in to see us at the end of last month as she recently took the decision to retire from her role. Daphne will be greatly missed by the office team and all her clients that she built up great relationships with over the last three years. Daphne was also a key part of our monthly ‘Companionship Cafés’,

which we were hosting at Dean’s Garden Centre on Stockton Lane, before lock down. Daphne attended the event to offer her expert support to those in attendance each month. We are incredibly grateful as Daphne has kindly agreed to continue to volunteer her time to support us when we are able to safely restart the Companionship Cafés.

Wishing you a happy retirement Daphne! Live well, your way with care at home
