Festive Edition 2019

Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale would like to wish all their clients and families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This Christmas, Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale will be giving a tin of yummy biscuits to all Home Instead clients to bring some festive cheer!
City Screen’s Dementia-Friendly Screening will take place on Monday 16th December, at 1.15pm showing White Christmas, Sing-a-long. WHITE CHRISTMAS tells the story of two talented song-and-dance men (Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye) who team up after the war to become one of the hottest acts in show business. It is a treasure trove of classical musical numbers, among them ‘Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep’, ‘Sisters’, ‘Blue Skies’, and the beloved ‘White Christmas’. At this special screening the lyrics to the songs appear on screen for you to join in. City Screen will serve complimentary tea, filter coffee and biscuits upstairs in the Sky Lounge from 12.45pm. Tickets are £4 per person, with free tickets for accompanying carers. If you would like a wheelchair space, please do inform Cath Sharp at the cinema as spaces are limited. (cath.s@picturehouses.co.uk) Dementia-Friendly Screenings are open to all but especially suited for people with dementia and their family, friends and carers. Book for White Christmas on 0871 902 5726, or online at www.picturehouses.co.uk or in person at City Screen at the Coney Street Box Office.
Our client Keith has been enjoying the company of his CAREGiver Lucy! As you can see they enjoy nothing better than a good game of dominoes!

RSPB - Big Garden Birdwatch The Big Garden Birdwatch will be back again at the end of January 2020 so go to www.rspb.org.uk and register your interest and you can join in too. They will send you a pack of information and you don’t even need to get up from your chair! In excess of half-a-million people joined in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey last year turning their eyes to the garden to watch and count over eight million birds during the 37th RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch – witnessing some exciting and interesting changes among our most popular garden birds. It’s hoped that the next survey will be even bigger.
We’ve had a busy month here at Home Instead York in terms of long service awards. Many congratulations to Bex who collected her restaurant voucher and gold badge after completing five years’ service with Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale. Bex is highly thought of by both her colleagues and clients and was nominated as Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale’s CAREGiver of the Year for 2019. Bex is one of our non drivers and gets around her clients with the help of her trusty bicycle – in all weathers! Congratulations also to Gill who is celebrating 4 years with Home Instead, Cath and Shirley for completing 3 years’ service, and to Helen and Alina who have completed their first year. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication that you show to our clients on a daily basis. We love having you on our ‘Outstanding’ team!
Winter Check List Now that winter is here we’ve put together a check list to make sure you are ready for the cold winter days and nights. ❄ Make sure your heating has been serviced. The general advice is this should be done annually. ❄ Keep a torch handy in case of power cuts and a radio with extra batteries. ❄ Make sure you have plenty of layers of clothing to wear, warm slippers for indoors and grippy shoes if you are heading out. ❄ Have regular hot drinks, it’s a good idea to keep a flask close by. ❄ It’s important to have at least one hot meal a day. Eating regularly will help keep your energy levels up. ❄ Make sure that the room you spend most of your time in is warm throughout the day. ❄ Heat your bedroom before going to bed. Set the timer on your heating to come on before you get up and switch off when you go to bed. ❄ Use an electric blanket or a hot water bottle but not at the same time. ❄ Wear bed socks, thermal underwear and hat in bed if it’s really cold. ❄ Make sure you have a list of emergency contacts such as your doctor, insurance helpline and chemist in case you need them.
