10 years on and going from strength to strength
March marks the 10-year anniversary of the opening of Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale, Director and Owner Luke Norbury had the following to say about reaching the milestone: I can’t quite believe that ten years have flown by since we first opened the doors of Home Instead York in 2009. In that time, we have provided our service to nearly 800 people and spent a total of hundreds of thousands of hours with clients. Our aim always has and always will be to provide support that we would want for our own families, so we were delighted when the Care Quality Commission recognised our efforts and rated Home Instead York ‘Outstanding’ following our recent inspection. Although we were delighted to receive this accolade, we are not resting on our laurels. Over the last ten years we have developed, adapted and led change in the world of health and social care and we fully anticipate that the next ten years will present even more challenges and opportunities. Ten years ago, around 1 in 6 people in the UK were over 65 and now
that figure is 1 in 5. The population will continue to age, and the government will have to respond to the huge challenges facing the health and social care system. Home Instead will continue to play its part by offering a service with peace of mind to enable people to stay at home for as long as they choose. Home Instead’s range of services is likely to expand in order to accommodate the needs of people who want to be at home, for example, we now offer live in care for clients to consider as an alternative to residential care. Technology will have a growing influence on the way we work, and I expect we will increasingly use technology to make our service more efficient and safer for clients and CAREGivers. What remains the same ten years on is that the key factor in our success is our people. At the core of our plan for the next 10 years is to nurture an amazing team of people who are passionate about quality care. Without doubt our team of CAREGivers and the office team that supports them are what makes the difference, and it’s a privilege to play a small part in facilitating the great work that they do.

Your eyes should give you a lifetime’s service, but sometimes they can be affected by conditions that develop as you grow older. It’s easy to neglect your eyes because they rarely hurt when there’s a problem. If you have a low income, you may be eligible for help with the cost should you need glasses or contact lenses. An eye test can pick up eye conditions, such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as general health problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. You can help keep your eyes healthy by: ▶ not smoking – smoking damages the eye, making it more likely to develop age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. ▶ eating lots of fruit and vegetables. ▶ protecting them from the sun by wearing sunglasses. The good news is that if you’re 60 or over,

you can have a free NHS eye test every two years. You can have a free test every year if you’re 70 or over. Having an eye test will not only tell you if you need new glasses, it will also check the health of the eye and can spot eye conditions before you become aware of them so they can be treated early.

Keep Your Pet? Do you or the person you care for have a pet? Would there be anyone to look after it if you had a health or other emergency? Age UK York runs a short-term pet-sitting service for small animals (so if you have a pet giraffe this is not for you). If you want to find out how to register your pet with the ‘Keep Your Pet’ service, please call 01904 726 191 for information.
Keep warm this winter Here are some top tips to help you stay warm through the winter months. Boiler check-up. This time of year is perfect for your annual boiler service to make sure it’s in tip top condition. The last thing you need in the middle of winter is a broken boiler, and a freezing cold house. Draught excluders. It is important to make sure all windows and doors are in good condition. If you have old, cracked or broken frames you may want to seal the gaps or use draught excluders to stop the cold weather from creeping in! Keep your pipes warm. Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing which could cause significant damage. The best way to prevent this from happening is to keep your pipes warm with their own foam cardigan (called lagging), which will reduce the heat lost and insulate the pipes to stop them from freezing. Several thin layers. Try wearing several thin layers of clothing, rather than one big jumper – the layers trap hot
air, keeping you warmer for longer. To keep heating bills down, consider wrapping up in a blanket or wearing more layers, rather than turning up the thermostat. Keep your feet warm. There’s nothing worse than cold feet! To keep yourself warm this winter, wear thermal or thick socks and sensible shoes if you’re venturing out. Wear boots with a thick lining and consider buying specially designed shoes, in case the weather turns icy! Hot water bottle. Consider using a hot water bottle throughout the day if you’re at home and during the night in bed. They are relatively inexpensive and very useful, quickly heating up your bed without using electricity or fuel. Bleed radiators. Trapped air in your radiators can prevent hot water from circulating effectively, which could be the reason your home isn’t as warm as it has been previously. Bleeding your radiators releases the trapped air and allows your central heating to work once again, keeping you and your property warm.
Live Life Well.
