Rachel – York team’s new addition Hello! My name is Rachel and I am the new addition to the office team at HISC York. I started at the beginning of January 2020. My role is to support, empower and encourage our CAREGivers through training, personal development and career growth. I am hugely passionate about making sure there is support there for our CAREGivers to achieve their career goals, and I will always love to chat about what this might mean for them. I have recently moved up from the South West of England with my husband and our 2 Labradors to make Yorkshire our home once again. I have previously worked alongside the NHS primary care and CCG, local council, veterans’ and environmental charities, national government and private businesses to train and support development of staff and I am really excited to have the opportunity to support our CAREGivers in this way as they continue their incredible work supporting our clients. Rachel
Twiddle Mitts galore! We have received another very kind donation of hand knitted ‘Twiddle Mitts’. The knitted mitts have buttons, beads and other objects sewn in to offer a calming distraction to those with dementia. The mitts also have the added bonus of keeping your hands warm in the colder months! If you would be interested in receiving one of these mitts or know of anyone who would like one then please contact the Home Instead Senior Care York Office on 01904 690884.
Top tips to eat well and age well Food and nutrition play an important role in staying well. But many people lose their interest in food as they get older and, according to Home Instead Senior Care research, one in five over 75s struggle to cook their own food. As part of our campaign called ‘Stay Nourished,’ our aim is to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits. Home Instead Senior Care York is here to share its knowledge and help to recognise the signs of malnutrition so that families or those providing care and support can take action. Here are some top tips for encouraging your loved one to enjoy mealtimes: ■ Keep mealtimes interesting. Aromas can help to stimulate the appetite. Encourage your loved one to get involved in the selection, preparation and serving of meals wherever possible. TOP TIP: Help your loved one to make a shopping list and decide on a healthy meal plan for the week. ■ Make the dining area comfortable, remove distractions and create a nice atmosphere. ■ Think about portion sizes. If appetite is a problem, it is better to introduce smaller portions more often instead of a large plate of food 3 times a day. Offering finger foods is also a good way to encourage people to eat if someone doesn’t want a traditional meal. ■ Ensure healthy snack options are available and make sure food and drinks are easily accessible throughout the day. ■ Avoid calorie-free or low-fat products unless your loved one has specifically been advised to eat them by their GP. ■ Always prioritise mealtimes and try to create a mealtime routine. Avoid rushing and coercing someone to eat. Gentle persuasion is better. ■ Confront the myth that weight loss is a normal process with ageing as our bodies become less active. Weight loss is not a normal part of the ageing process. If you are feeling under strain and need a helping hand or a bit of respite time, Home Instead Senior Care can help. Our CAREGivers can provide help around the house as well as assistance with meal preparation, shopping and errands. Please ring Home Instead York on 01904 690884 for more information.
Investing in the future At Home Instead York we are moving to improve our processes with technology. We are working with IQ:timecard who are now offering a mobile application allowing our CAREGivers to fully access and manage their clients’ care at the touch of a button and in ‘real-time’ in this everevolving digital world. IQ:timecard mobile is a fully supported mobile application available on both Android and iOS platforms. The mobile app provides the following benefits to our CAREGivers and clients: Easily access schedule data and changes to schedules in real time. Clock in/out with a client at the touch of a button which then takes a GPS ‘lock’ of the location of the CAREGiver. This enables office staff to validate that a CAREGiver is with the correct client, at the correct time and stays for the agreed duration of the visit. Allows administration of medi cation recording full details of the medication required, including dosage, and any other critical information. Last minute changes to medication is available in real time within the mobile app. Real time medication responses automatically update a Client MAR Sheet for visibility from within the office and also, to client & client family members available in the ‘Client/Family Portal’. Real time alerts sent to the CAREGiver and/or office staff when a medication has not been administered. Complete client activity logs in order to fully detail what has happened during the visit with the ability to record any concerns regarding the client, allowing for person centred care.
The mobile app provides
many benefits to our
CAREGivers and clients
View allergies relating to the client including any client specific notes and dietary requirements. View documents such as care plans within the mobile app to ensure the CAREGiver always has visibility of the latest changes.
What about Security? All data held within the IQ:timecard mobile app and the systems at the office are encrypted in transit. To ensure the data is secure at all times, the app will automatically lock when you either turn off the screen or close the app. The app will also lock during a period of inactivity prompting the CAREGiver to enter their PIN Code which is specific to them and issued via the office. Administrators of IQ:timecard can control what data is visible and available to any employee and will only allow access to client data for those employees scheduled to visit that client in any given period. An Access Authorisation and Consent Form is available on request to existing clients and their families from the Home Instead Senior Care York Office. Please contact us on 01904 690884 for more information.
Companionship Café Make a date for another opportunity to meet others Y O R K We are delighted to now have the opportunity to be able to hold two sessions of the Companionship Café every month, one at Dean’s Garden Centre in the Bothy restaurant and one at Costa Coffee shop in Haxby. Both places have a lovely environment and are great places to come and socialise, make new friends, combat loneliness and share life’s challenges. Everyone who attends the meetings is made to feel welcome and there is no cost apart from the refreshments you would like to purchase. You can come along on your own or bring along a friend or a carer and get involved with activities or simply have a chat over a cuppa and a cake.
