Macmillan coffee morning

Last month we hosted our very own ‘Bake Off Style’ Macmillan coffee morning. As you can see there were some great entries, but our ‘Star Baker’ was Charlene our Staff Coordinator who made a lovely chocolate fudge cake. All proceeds raised from cake sales have gone to Macmillan Cancer Support, a really great cause!

Bogus workmen North Yorkshire trading standards have received a number of reports recently from local residents and businesses being approached by persons claiming to be workmen from nearby road works. These workmen claim they have tarmac left over and are offering driveways and pathways at reduced prices. These workmen are bogus and the work completed is often of poor quality and vastly overpriced. Residents are warned not to engage with these workmen but to report the incident to North Yorkshire police on 101 or to North Yorkshire trading standards on 03454 040506.

Welcome back Carol! Carol, our care manager, recently returned from six weeks off work after her successful hip operation in September. We’re glad to have her back, and we are sure you will all see her again very soon!

It’s all bananas to me!

The curved yellow fruit packs a big nutritional punch, wrapped in its own convenient packaging. Some scientists believe that the banana may have even been the world’s first fruit with one author believing that it was the banana, not the apple, that was the “forbidden fruit” that Eve offered Adam.

Today, bananas are grown in at least 107 countries and are ranked fourth among the world’s food crops in monetary value. Bananas are also said to have great health benefits including potentially reducing risks of high blood pressure, asthma, cancer, stroke, supporting a healthy heart, and preserving memory and boosting your mood – so what’s not to love about bananas. So…mash them, slice them, freeze them, smoothie them, add them to cakes or simply eat one now and again…but don’t store them with other fruit or put them in the fridge as they’ll overripen too quickly.

BBC Four goes slow The BBC is lining up a new series of “slow television” shows after nearly a million people tuned into a BBC Four documentary that featured nothing more than two hours of footage captured from the front of a bus travelling around the Yorkshire Dales. All Aboard! The Country Bus followed the number 830 “Northern Dalesman” bus along a 40-mile route around the picturesque national park, and was seen by an average of 800,000 viewers.

So slow down the pace, sit back, relax and enjoy BBC Four’s collection of deliberately unhurried programmes available on its website at www.bbc.co.uk. There’s Dawn Chorus, the sounds of Spring, which has the uninterrupted and unspoiled birdsong of sunrise in all its glory and programmes on the making by hand of a glass jug, a metal blade and the painstaking process of making a classic Windsor wooden chair.

Call 105 in a Black Out Power cuts are always annoying, but it isn’t always clear what to do. The good news is that next time there’s a black out, there’s a new number you can dial to find out what’s going on. The power companies across England, Wales and Scotland have joined forces to launch ‘105’, a simplified means of contacting the electricity company. Calling it will put the caller directly through to their local electricity network operator and don’t worry, it’s free to call. The aim is to provide a single place where you can report power cuts or damage to electrical infrastructure, or find out more about why the lights have gone off in your area.

Dementia Friends programme Home Instead Senior Care York are working in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society to help change people’s perceptions of Dementia. The aim is to transform the way we think, act and talk about Dementia. A lack of understanding around Dementia can cause loneliness and social exclusion amongst those affected. The Dementia Friends programme hopes to tackle this issue by creating more communities and businesses that are Dementia Friendly and more inclusive of people affected by it. The people who deliver these information sessions are called ‘Dementia Friends Champions’ and at Home Instead we have our very own, in our Recruiter Karen. Over the past few weeks Karen has been going out and about into the community to deliver the information sessions, and in that time she has made more than 30 Dementia Friends. The Dementia Friends Karen has made will now be able to put their knowledge into action, which could help someone living with Dementia in their community. Their actions could be as big or as small as they choose – but every action counts. If you’re interested in attending one of Karen’s Dementia Friends Programmes, please call us on 01904 690884. Or for more information please visit: www.dementiafriends.org.uk.
