Big thank you to all the schools who have kindly allowed us to use their premises to display one. Check out our latest article from Bethany Foster of Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors, as she gives some great advice on updating your Will.
Have you had changes in yours or your families circumstances? Make sure you update your Will. When there is a change in your circumstances or if someone who is a beneficiary in your Will makes a change in their life, for example, if they marry or remarry, have children or get divorced, it is very important that you review and update your Will to make sure your wishes are reflected. Forgetting to update your Will in light of a change of circumstances could lead to a claim being made against your estate. Your estate could also become subject to a claim, for example from a disappointed cohabitee,
if you have failed to make a Will and simply left the distribution down to the rules of intestacy. Our solicitors can explain how your estate will be dealt with in view of your circumstances and help you plan to achieve your wishes. Bethany Worthy is a Solicitor in the Private Client team of solicitors at Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors in Pickering, looking after clients all across the Ryedale and Scarborough regions. She is a Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE) accredited member. Her membership of SFE shows she has a wealth of experience within
this key legal area as members are required to have spent a substantial amount of time working for older and vulnerable people as well as support for the family and carers. Bethany’s expert help and advice includes guidance on selling your home or ways to stay in your home, making a Will. Dementia and the Herbert Protocol When a person goes missing, it can be very distressing for family, friends and can be even more worrying when the missing person has Dementia. The Herbert Protocol is an initiative introduced by West Yorkshire Police and other agencies which encourages carers to compile useful information which could be used in the event of a vulnerable person going missing. Carers, family members and friends can complete, in advance, a form recording all vital details, such as medication required, mobile numbers, places previously located, a photograph etc. In the event of your family member or friend going missing, the form can be easily sent or handed to the police to reduce the time taken in gathering this information. The Herbert Protocol initiative is named after George Herbert, a war veteran of the Normandy landings, who lived with dementia. You can download a form at: https:// www.westyorkshire.police.uk/advice/ personal-safety-and-possessions/ dementia-awareness/dementiaawareness/herbert-protocol-missingperson-incident-form

Support, advice and wellbeing services Dementia Forward is the leading dementia charity for North Yorkshire, providing support, advice and wellbeing services for people living with dementia. Their aim is that when someone has concerns about dementia or is living with a diagnosis, they can access information and support, will feel informed and included and be able to live well within their community, doing the things they enjoy for as long as possible. The charity started just 10 years ago, but has responded to the ever-increasing need for dementia services; growing and developing to reach more people, and now supporting over 4,000 families. The charity runs a weekly café, Thursday Together, at St Andrew’s Church in Scarborough and also offers a specific young onset group in the town – known as Time Out Together. Young onset dementia is
dementia diagnosed under the age of 65, and the charity strongly believes that services should be tailored
schools, churches and community groups and can offer bespoke training to suit the needs of the listener.
to the specific needs of younger people, who may still be physically active and have a job, mortgage and family responsibilities when they are diagnosed. The young onset groups go out weekly in the local community and benefit from peer support, while enjoying age appropriate activity, independent from their family carers. There are approximately 10,000 people living with dementia in North Yorkshire, and it is vital that we are all aware of the things that we can do to support people in our communities. Awareness and education are high on Dementia Forward’s agenda, and they are always keen to talk to businesses,
If you would like more information on any of these services, please call the Helpline on 03300 578592. The Helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm, and the team can provide free, confidential advice and support and take referrals for their experienced support advisors. As Dementia Forward is celebrating its 10th birthday, they are planning a host of events throughout the year. Please visit their website, and sign up to their mailing list to keep up to date with what’s happening near you: www. dementiaforward.org.uk
