Summer 2022

Jubilee celebrations at Alder View Court Tracey, our Community Engagement Coordinator kickstarted a month of Jubilee celebrations at Alder View Court by attending their Jubilee Party. One of our Clients, Margaret attended and thoroughly enjoyed her afternoon, she even managed a schooner

of Sherry to celebrate! We donated a hamper for their tombola top prize, which contained a branded rucksack, water bottle, 2 bottles of wine, handmade chocolates from Bonnets of Scarborough and other sweet treats!

The prize was won by a lovely lady called Pauline who is pictured with Tracey, she was over the moon with her prize!

Home Instead Charities Jubilee Bake Sale On Wednesday 8th June, we held a Jubilee themed bake sale outside our office, to raise donations for Home Instead Charities. Many thanks to any of the passers by who purchased a sweet treat! In total you helped us raise over £90, which will go towards bringing joy to the lives of elderly people in your local communities, by funding activities such as trips to the coast or a swimming lesson. You can find out more about Home Instead Charities, by visiting: https://www.homeinstead.co.uk/charities/

How to keep cool during summer It’s fair to say that we all look forward to the summer, especially when we are blessed with particularly warm and sunny weather. The sunshine makes us feel happy and it offers a great source of vitamin D to keep us healthy. However, higher temperatures and humidity can also present risks to our health. Older people’s bodies in particular, are often unable to adjust to sudden changes in temperature, which makes them more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. With this in mind, here are a few tips on how to make the most of the summer weather but stay cool in the process: 1 Avoid the hottest times of the day (between 11am – 3pm) – if you do need to venture out make sure you aren’t outside for long periods of time and find shady spots when you can. 2 Keep hydrated – even if you’re not thirsty it’s important to drink plenty of water or fruit juice to replace fluids lost during sweating. Avoid caffeine or alcohol which increase dehydration. 3 Think lightweight – choose clothing which is loose, lightweight, light coloured and breathable such a white linen shirt. 4 Cool down – take cool showers and baths when possible. If you’re out and about, use a cotton hankie soaked in cool water and place it on the back of your neck and on your wrists. 5 Cover up – in addition to wearing cooler clothing it’s also important to remember a hat. No matter whether it’s a cotton baseball cap or a straw boater, headwear will help to keep your face in the shade. 6 Pick the perfect spot – seek out the coolest areas of your home during warmer weather. Keep curtains and blinds closed to prevent sun heating up rooms, especially your bedroom.

Jubilee Companionship Café You may have seen in our spring edition of The Elder, how delighted we were to be launching our Companionship Café at St James Church and Community Arts Centre, Scarborough. We’ve held three café’s so far and it’s been absolutely wonderful having likeminded friendly people come along for a coffee and a chat, we even managed to do a Jubilee special on Monday 27th June, to which, we had a wonderful turnout. If you think a loved one, elderly friend or neighbour would benefit

from some time socialising, doing fun activities and making new friends then please, let them know about our monthly event. The next one is on Monday 25th July from 13.30pm – 15.00pm and every fourth Monday of the month afterwards. Everyone who attends is made to feel welcome, so come on your own or feel free to bring a Care Professional or family member along! If you have any questions, please call Steph on; 01904 690884 or email: info@scarborough. homeinstead.co.uk

STAY SAFE - Scam awareness and fraud advice Millions of people are affected by scams, and it is a global problem that is growing. With more efficient communication methods such as telephone, text and email, people are being targeted and victimised more easily. We may use the term ‘scams’, but scams are fraud, and all fraud is a crime. We have rounded up a selection of the most popular scams doing the rounds at the current time to help you, your family and friends from becoming victim to these crimes. FAKE EVRI DELIVERY TEXT SCAM Delivery company Evri, formerly Hermes, is being impersonated by fraudsters asking for bank details to pay a fake delivery fee. It asks the recipient to visit

a website to pay a £1.45 shipping fee, and if they don’t pay, the parcel will be returned to the sender. It’s likely that the scammers are mass targeting victims. However, it can be persuasive if you’re waiting for a package to arrive. FAKE ENERGY BILL REBATE SCHEME It’s not taken too long for scammers to jump on the back of soaring energy bills. Emails using the logo of energy regulator Ofgem claim to offer an ‘energy bill rebate scheme’ worth up to £450 per household. The links direct recipients to a fake online portal where victims are urged to share personal and payment details in order to claim their refund. The fake website was registered just days ago but has already prompted

urgent warnings from the genuine Ofgem. SANTANDER IMPERSONATION TEXT SCAM EXPOSED Most of us receive dodgy texts but it’s always worth knowing the latest one doing the rounds. This scam begins with what appears to be a warning text from Santander about so-called suspicious activity on your account. The warning is then meant to lure you into clicking a URL to notify Santander if it wasn’t you. FAKE ADS USING MARTIN LEWIS’S IMAGE Fake emails and adverts using Martin Lewis’s image have been going on for years, but recently Action Fraud received almost 1,200 reports in just three days, about a fake Bitcoin investment scheme email

using his image. With the cost of living continuing to soar, Martin’s money-saving advice has featured heavily across the media, and scammers are trying to take advantage. Martin Lewis has nothing to do with these ads, so if you see them, report them. PHONEY BT DIRECT DEBIT EMAIL BT is being impersonated by scammers in an email that asks you to change your direct debit details. As fraudulent emails go, this is a convincing one. It includes BT’s branding, logo and even BT’s customer service phone number. But the link behind the button directs you to a fake website. If you receive a message out of the blue about payment details, please always check with your provider directly before you click.

How important is it to have Lasting Powers of Attorney in place, what are they and why would I need them? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that enables you to give a person you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf if you lose mental or physical capacity or if you no longer wish to make those decisions yourself. There are two types of LPA – one that covers your finances and one that covers health and welfare decisions. You may no longer be able to make or implement decisions either on a temporary basis such as a visit to hospital for an operation, or on a more permanent basis, for example, following a diagnosis of dementia. If either of these scenarios were to happen, can you ensure that things are looked after on your behalf by a trusted person? If you want this protection, then you should consider a Lasting Power of Attorney. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Welfare can only be used if you no longer have mental capacity to make these decisions yourself and it is in your best interests to make such decisions. They cover health, care and welfare decisions such as where you live, what medical

treatment and care you receive, what you should eat and who you have contact with and what social activities you take part in. In Health & Welfare LPA’s you can also decide whether your Attorney is able to make decisions about life sustaining treatment. A Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Affairs can be used while you have mental capacity but your physical capacity is compromised, or you can opt for them to be valid only if you have lost mental capacity. They can cover all decisions about your finances including buying and selling property, paying your bills such as mortgage or rental payments, care home fees and utilities and investing your money. You can restrict what your Attorney is able to do or allow them to make and implement all decisions that you would otherwise make and implement if you were able. Your Attorney cannot do whatever they want. They must always act in your best interests, keep records of what they are doing and keep your finances separate from their own. You can ask for an independent person, such as your Solicitor, to be given information about how your finances are being dealt with including what your money is being spent on. Make sure you keep your LPA updated if your circumstances change. Your choices around the people you want responsible for your finances and wellbeing may change, such as following a marriage or divorce, when children reach adulthood, or if parents pass away.
