Use up your old Quids With the new 12-sided £1 coin now in circulation, the current round version will stop being legal tender and so won’t be accepted in shops from 15 October 2017. After that, if you still have any old £1 coins, you won’t be able to spend them so check your piggybanks and coin jars as it’s all too easy to
squirrel money away and forget about it. Many banks and building societies will continue to accept the old pound coin even after 15 October if you are their customer but you will need to take them to your bank. The best option is to simply spend your old pound coins now and save yourself a journey.
Great success for Open Garden
Rewela Cottage, the garden of Daphne Ellis, General Manager at Home Instead Senior Care York, and partner John Plant, was open for the National Gardens Scheme again in May and July this year. In 2017 alone Daphne and John have raised a staggering £4,400 for the NGS charities, which include Macmillan and Marie Curie. This total will be added to the UK funds as a whole, of which they are hoping to raise over £2.6 million countrywide. With the help of friends and volunteers of the local village of Skewsby, the days out for the visitors are turned into
something just a little bit special. This really wouldn’t be possible without all the help Daphne and John receive on the day of the Open Gardens. Of course, it is the visitors that make the difference. This year around 700 people came to see the garden at Rewela Cottage. That’s more than 5,000 people, over the last 7 years the garden has been open to the public. It is the public’s generosity that creates the funds raised for the NGS charities. Thank you to those who have visited over the course of the last year, Rewela Cottage will be open once again in May and July 2018.

Step on board a railway carriage to discover the experiences of the passengers, and the medical staff who cared for them under extraordinary circumstances. Explore a rich treasure trove of photographs, technical drawings and diaries to uncover the moving stories of some of the millions who travelled on board, as well as the railway staff who built the trains at incredible speed. Accessing NHS Dental Services – Healthwatch Survey Healthwatch York aims to put you at the heart of health and social care services in our city. By getting feedback on your experiences they can see what is working well and what needs to be improved. This year they are getting feedback on accesses to dental services and this survey gives you a chance to have your say. Have you or a member of your family struggled to get a dentist in York? Have you visited a dentist in the past two years? If so, they’d love to hear more about your experiences, both good and bad. The survey is anonymous and the findings will be included in a Healthwatch York report and presented to the York Health and Wellbeing Board. City Screen will serve complimentary tea, filter coffee and biscuits upstairs in the Sky Lounge from 12.45pm. If you would like a wheelchair space, please do inform Cath Sharp at the cinema as spaces are limited. (cath.s@picturehouses. co.uk) Dementia-Friendly Screenings are open to all but especially suited for people with dementia and their family, friends and carers. Simple design changes have been found to help people with dementia stay in their homes for longer. Dementia causes depth perception problems, so having contrasting colours between the floor and the wall and items in contrasting colours can make a huge difference. Making sure the light level is adequate, increasing the level to more than you would normally, can also have a big impact. Suggested design changes can include: • Display treasured photographs and items to evoke a sense of comfort and belonging and as a distraction or talking point; • Remove floor mats and rugs as they can cause trips and falls; • Use brightly coloured crockery that contrasts with the food and the table; • Place signs on cupboards and doors to help make items easy to find and label hot and cold taps; • Use a toilet seat and toilet roll that contrasts with the rest of the bathroom – a bright toilet mat will also help individuals locate the toilet quickly and easily; • Leave interior room doors open so individuals can see clearly where everything is in each room; • Check that the front door is easily distinguish able and that the door lock and keys are easy to use.
