Carolyn Scoops £1,000 National Prize

Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale’s CAREGiver Carolyn, was one of five lucky national winners to get their hands on a £1,000 shopping voucher. Carolyn won the voucher after taking part in our recent annual Employee Satisfaction Questionnaire (PEAQ). The questionnaire, designed to help Home Instead become the employer of choice, is an anonymous survey which gives staff their chance to give feedback on how we can improve. For every employee who completed the survey locally, their name was entered into a national prize draw to win £1,000 of LOVE2SHOP vouchers, of which Carolyn was one of five lucky winners. Carolyn is hoping to spend her vouchers on organising a trip to New York later in the year. Enjoy!

CAREGiver of the Year We are delighted to announce that we have nominated Julia Kirkman as Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale’s 2018 CAREGiver of the Year. Despite only joining us in October last year, Julia made an instant impression on us and all her clients. She epitomises what we look for in a CAREGiver, getting on quietly in the role but never failing to go that extra mile for those she cares for. Well done Julia!

Senior Snippets: Stay Nourished Top Tips to Eat Well and Age Well Food and nutrition play an important role in staying well. But many people lose their interest in food as they get older and, according to Home Instead Senior Care research, one in five over 75s struggle to cook their own food. As part of our new campaign called ‘Stay Nourished,’ our aim is to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits. Home Instead Senior Care York & Ryedale is here to share its knowledge and help you to recognise the signs of malnutrition so that families or those providing care and support can take action. Here are some top tips for encouraging your loved one to enjoy mealtimes: ▲ Keep mealtimes interesting. Aromas can help to stimulate the appetite. Encourage your loved one to get involved in the selection, preparation and serving of meals wherever possible. ▲ Make the dining area comfortable, remove distractions and create a nice atmosphere. ▲ Think about portion sizes. If appetite is a problem, it is better to introduce smaller portions more often instead of a large plate of food 3 times a day.

Offering finger foods Top Tip: is also a good way Help your loved to encourage people to eat if someone one to make a doesn’t want a shopping list traditional meal. ▲E nsure healthy and decide on snack options are available and make a healthy meal sure food and drinks plan for the are easily accessible throughout the day. week. ▲A void calorie-free or low-fat products unless your loved one has specifically been advised to eat them by their GP. ▲ Always prioritise mealtimes and try to create a mealtime routine. Get ready for the Big City Read 2018 Programme and event booking from 1 August. Events from 20 September to 16 November Our Big City Read book for 2018 is Matt Haig’s The Radleys. Matt is riding the crest of a wave at the minute as his latest book Notes on a Nervous Planet went straight into the Sunday Times bestseller list at number one at the beginning of July. Matt will be appearing in York twice to help us to both launch and celebrate the end of the Big City Read. You can find details of these events and many more in our brochure. The Big City Read is about sharing the joy of reading and we will be giving away 5,000 free copies of The Radleys in York libraries and at special pop-up events from 21 September which you can find in the At a Glance section of our brochure. In addition to author events, reading groups, films, talks and workshops we are delighted to be offering a new strand to the Big City Read this year. We have been awarded funding from Arts Council England to commission a short play, Surprise Ending, which has been written for us by Bridget Foreman and will

be performed by Riding Lights Theatre Company in all of our libraries. The Radleys is a moving and thrilling domestic novel that explores the lengths a parent will go to protect a child, what it costs to deny your identity, the undeniable appeal of sin, and the bonds of family love. Peter and Helen Radley live a typical suburban life in Bishopthorpe with their teenage children, Rowan and Clara. One night Clara has a shocking experience which will change all of their lives forever and force Peter and Helen to reveal that Matt Haig they are all, in fact, vampires. You can download the Big City Read Brochure 2018, and find details of Big City Read events and book them on www.exploreyork.org.uk/bigcityread/ If you need some help with booking, you can ask at any library in York. We advise booking in advance for all of our events, including the free ones, to make sure of a place. You will be able to collect your free copy of The Radleys from any Explore York Library from 21 September while stocks last. If you complete one of our contact cards when you collect your book we will contact you to ask you what you think about the Big City Read.
