What is Greening Grey Britain? Greening Grey Britain is a Royal Horticultural Society campaign to get the nation to transform hard, cold grey areas into living, planted-up beautiful places, to improve lives and help the environment. More than 1,300 people have already promised to plant up an area of grey to green, helping the RHS reach its target of 6,000 promises by the end of 2017. So why not join in and make a grey space a little greener. To learn more and get some hints and tips on how to do it have a look at the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk.

Little Shambles Big Art is a friendly open-air art market in the heart of our city, next to York’s historic Shambles. Created by York artists, Sue Clayton and Hatti McKenzie, it is a showcase of quality local arts and crafts, providing a great opportunity to meet the artists and makers, discuss their work and inspirations, and buy handmade products direct from the maker. Every month there are art demonstrations, giving you the chance to try a new technique or craft. They have free children’s activities plus a chance to release your inner artist on a huge doodle sheet and live music adds to the vibrant atmosphere. Near the Shambles Market Street Food Courtyard, Little Shambles Big Art is a great place to browse, shop, eat and soak up the atmosphere. The Little Shambles Big Art market is held on the last Sunday of the month and you can find more information at www.littleshamblesbigart.co.uk, on Facebook (littleshamblesbigart), Instagram and Twitter.

Eat Weetabix and other whole grains for a healthier life Eating whole grains – such as brown rice, oats and Weetabix – could prevent an early death, research backed by Oxford University suggests. Experts at Harvard in the United States found just one 16g serving per day of whole grains cuts the risk of dying from any cause, heart disease or cancer. And, they argued, the more whole grains people eat, the bigger the benefits. When three servings of whole grains (48g) was eaten daily, people had a 20% lower chance of dying from any cause, a 25% reduced risk of a cardiovascular death and a 14% reduced chance of dying from cancer. A slice of whole grain bread acts as one serving, while two Weetabix (37.5g) is just over two servings. Half a cup of cooked brown rice or 100% whole grain pasta also count as one serving. Experts agree that people do not eat enough whole grain foods and fibre. The recent Eatwell Guide published by Public Health England (PHE) says people should consume 30g of fibre per day from fruit, vegetables and whole grain foods.

Recycling your clothes can save lives Believe it or not, your old textiles, clothing, shoes and mobile phones can help the Yorkshire Air Ambulance raise funds needed to keep both of Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s helicopters maintained and in the air. Working with their recycling partners, BIU Group, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance receive an agreed percentage of the sale of the recycled materials. It is as simple as that! Good quality items which can be reused are sold to second-hand clothing traders in the UK and worldwide. ‘End of life’ garments are recycled into industrial wipers and cloths, mattress filling, insulation and new fibres. The recycling bins are available at convenient locations across Yorkshire such as household waste sites, supermarket car parks, leisure facilities or pub car parks. To locate your nearest textile bank please use the bank locator at www.biugroup.co.uk/banklocator/ If you’d like to know more about the Yorkshire Air Ambulance have a look at their website www.yorkshireairambulance.org.uk
