n the past two years, Aaron and I have done more traveling than most people will do in their entire live times. If it weren’t for Aaron, I would most likely be on the opposite end of the stick when it comes to traveling. I was always the kind of person who worried too much about the trip to actually take the trip. Aaron has taught me the essence of carpe diem (seize the day). We decided that we would travel to all of the “third world” countries while we were young, full of energy, and broke and save all the rich industrialized countries for later in life (or never). This tactic has opened up a vast new awareness in me. Sure, I have seen the commercials on television my whole life asking for monthly donations to sponsor suffering children but I had never actually seen that suffer with my own two eyes. I knew those children were out there and while I felt bad for them, I never really took any actions in my daily life to alleviate their pain. Those suffering children would become all but forgotten in the busy hustle bustle of my everyday life, getting beaten out by Taco Bell, the Simpson’s,…the list is as long as you want to make it. At the same time, I have always had this almost unexplainable, deep passion inside of me that pushes me to help make the world better. I grew up extremely environmentally conscious (except for my occasional bouts with Taco Bell) and worked to teach others to live sustainably,
and out real marketable skills so they can overcome there homelessness. Through help from the staff at McFatter Technical Center, professional chef instructors come and teach students basic culinary skills so they can go out and find a good job. On top of this, when a student finishes the 9 week program they have the option to continue their education tuition free at McFatter to become a fully certified chef. I wake up everyday excited to go to Love Thy Neighbor, because I'm doing something I love to do and will be gainfully employed because of it. I am now 2 weeks away from graduating from the program and have the top grade in the class. I have been accepted at Mcfatter School of Culinary Arts and am continuing my education so I to can become a fully accredited chef. Because of this program and COSAC I am holding a 5course dinner on June 3rd in honor of Love Thy Neighbor and COSAC. I decided to do this to show how hard work and dedication can turn even the worst of circumstances around. I want the people who nurtured me, who gave me a second chance, who saved my life to know what I have learned. And that is exactly what I did. I am now in better health but still have some
problems and I am living in an Cosac transitional apartment out of the main shelter, and am well on my way to a happy and successful future. So to Arnold at Love Thy Neighbor, Sean, Lois, Ginny, and all the gang at COSAC I want to say thank you. Thank you for being my light when all others were out. Thank you for kicking me in the butt when I needed it, and most of all thank you for not only saving my life, but giving it back to me. Without you my life would not be where it is today. This dinner is in honor of you guys, you definitely put into real life the concept of "Love Thy Neighbor". God bless you all, and thank you. Brian Askins

without ever really focusing on starvation or poverty. Like most Americans in denial, I turned a blind eye towards it. Aaron has forced me to look at these situations with both eyes wide open by taking me directly to it. I’ll tell you what, I will never go back to the way I used to think (or not think) about those issues. We recently took a trip to Nicaragua to learn more about the problems there with street children sniffing glue. Nicaragua is classified as the second poorest country in the western hemisphere after Haiti, but in traveling there, we were surprised by the lack of beggars (Peru had way more), trash (Costa Rica was by far, more dirty), and street kids (the amount cannot even begin to compare with that of Haiti’s). Our guidebook also told us that Nicaragua was safer than the popular tourist destination right to its south, Costa Rica. Don’t get me wrong; the Nican people have it all but easy. They have been repeatedly slammed by the forces of Mother Nature, have a long history of political turmoil, and are consistently exploited for their staple crops. Of all the places we have visited, Nicaragua is definitely one of the most interesting; the people are extremely friendly and the land is amazing. In the city of Granada, our mission was
to meet with ex-Peace Corps volunteer, Donna Tabor who stayed in Nicaragua after her PC duties had ended, to work with kids that sniff glue. We went the hostel she owns “Another Night in Paradise” to find her, as well as lodging for the next couple of days. While we were talking to Donna and looking at her personal pictures of kids sniffing glue, we learned that she had also started a restaurant around the corner called “Café los Chavalos” (a slang term in Spanish for “kids”). As it turns out, the restaurant was started as a culinary trade program to entice glue snuffers to come off the street and also to prevent kids from sniffing glue in the first place. Her restaurant is absolutely amazing, this coming from someone who is extremely critical of restaurants. Her program is designed to teach reformed glue addicts the aspects of what it takes to run a fine dining establishment, or any business for that matter. Currently, she has a group of over 10 boys partaking in this venture; I was at a loss of words when I saw them in action. This is due in part to their superior training: a professional server taught them the proper etiquette and art of serving food, two Argentinean wine connoisseurs taught them how to present, serve, and suggest a bottle of wine, and on a daily basis the boys learn a new technique to achieve culinary (Continued on page 5)

GERD
W
e learn something new everyday. I just did. My article is on GERD, reflux, which I suffer from. Oh!, that heartburn! The thing about heartburn is that it helps make people loose their jobs. Some experts agree that many people take off of work from heartburn because they have chest pain. John Tyler who came to our shelter became homeless because of that reason. This is another reason why I wrote this month’s medical column on heartburn. John would continue to take off work because he was sure he had cardiac problems. When the pain came, he would take aspirin because some doctor did not tell him it might be heartburn. Then when he took the aspirin the heartburn increased. So he thought for sure he had a bad heart and kept missing many days of work. It became so disturbing to him that he would then suffer anxiety attacks. For those of us who have suffered anxiety attacks, we all know that it feels like you are having a heart attack. Finally his doctor called him a hypochondriac and sent him to a psychiatrist. When the psychiatrist treated him for hypochondria, he prescribed him with medication to reduce the acid in his body. Five days later he experienced no more heartburn so his heartburn became a medical condition of the past and do did his job. With all these little problems he became fully dysfunctional and was welcomed to the “World of Homelessness.” The Homeless Voice feels it needs to educate not just on homelessness in general; but on so many other reasons why people become
What is GERD (acid reflux)? astroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD, or acid reflux, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach regurgitates (backs up, or refluxes) into the esophagus. The liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus although this occurs in a minority of patients. The regurgitated liquid usually contains acid and pepsin that are produced by the stomach. (Pepsin is an enzyme that begins the digestion of proteins in the stomach.) The refluxed liquid also may contain bile that has backed-up into the stomach from the duodenum. (The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine that attaches to the stomach.) Acid is believed to be the most injurious component of the refluxed liquid. Pepsin and bile also may injure the esophagus, but their role in the production of esophageal inflammation and damage (esophagitis) is not as clear as the role of acid. This is sort of complicated, but it’s interesting. As is often the case, the body has ways (mechanisms) to protect itself from the harmful effects of reflux and acid. For example, most reflux occurs during the day when individuals are upright. In the upright position, the refluxed liquid is more likely to flow back down into the stomach due to the effect of gravity. In addition, while individuals are awake, they repeatedly swallow, whether or not there is reflux. Each swallow carries any refluxed liquid back into the stomach. Finally, the salivary glands in the mouth produce saliva, which contains bicarbonate. With each swallow, bicarbonate-containing saliva travels down the esophagus. The bicarbonate neutralizes the small amount of acid that remains in the esophagus after gravity and swallowing have removed most of the liquid. The key words, gravity, swallowing, and saliva ...the lack of...are the reason why we are tormented at night. In the prone position, the reflux that occurs at night is more likely to result in acid remaining in the esophagus longer and causing greater damage to the esophagus. A small number of patients with GERD produce abnormally large amounts of acid, but this is uncommon and not a contributing factor in the vast majority of patients. The factors that contribute to causing GERD are the lower esophageal sphincter, hiatal hernias, esophageal contractions, and emptying of the stomach.

homeless. This is why we run this medical column. I learned a few things after doing the research on heartburn. Number one I didn’t know that it was basically a lifelong condition and two, that most people have it. Actually, the reflux of the stomach's liquid contents into the esophagus occurs in most normal individuals. In fact, one study found that reflux occurs as frequently in normal individuals as in patients with GERD. In patients with GERD, however, the refluxed liquid contains acid more often, and the acid remains in the esophagus longer.
Lower esophageal sphincter he action of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is perhaps the most important factor (mechanism) for preventing reflux. The esophagus is a muscular tube that extends from the lower throat to the stomach. The LES is a specialized ring of muscle that surrounds the lower-most end of the esophagus where it joins the stomach. The muscle that makes up the LES is active most of the time. This means that it is contracting and closing off the passage from the esophagus into the stomach. This closing of the passage prevents reflux. When food or saliva is swallowed, the LES relaxes for a few seconds to allow the food or saliva to
T
Inflammation and infection of the lungs efluxed liquid that passes the larynx can enter the lungs. The reflux of liquid into the lungs (called aspiration) often results in coughing and choking. Aspiration, however, can also occur without producing these symptoms. With or without these symptoms, aspiration may lead to infection of the lungs and result in pneumonia. This type of pneumonia is a serious problem requiring immediate treatment. When aspiration is unaccompanied by symptoms, it can result in a slow, progressive scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs that can be seen on chest x-rays. Aspiration is more likely to occur at night because that is when the processes (mechanisms) that protect against reflux are not active and the coughing reflex that protects the lungs also is not active.
R
pass from the esophagus into the stomach, and then it closes again. Depending on the person, this open-close action may take only a few moments or if the muscle is weak, a few minutes… especially when your tummy is full after a meal...and therefore reflux can occur more easily. Enough of this technical stuff. This esophagus constricts and relaxes, pushing your food, saliva, etc down toward your stomach. If these contractions aren’t strong enough, or they don’t start on time with the swallow, then the acid doesn’t get pushed back down. And if this is the case, then nite nite causes even more of a problem.
Hiatal hernia iatal hernias contribute to reflux, although the way in which they contribute is not clear. A majority of patients with GERD have hiatal hernias, but many do not. Then for some reason, there is the stomach that empties out slower than the normal, about 20% of the patients, and that is a contributing factor too.
H
Heartburn eartburn usually is described as a burning pain in the middle of the chest. It may start high in the abdomen or may extend up into the neck. In some patients, however, the pain may be sharp or pressure-like, rather than burning. Such pain can mimic heart pain (angina). In other patients, the pain may extend to the back. Since acid reflux is more common after meals, heartburn is more common after meals. Heartburn is also more common when individuals lie down because without the effects of gravity, reflux occurs more easily, and acid is returned to the stomach more slowly. This is especially a good reason not to eat just before bedtime. There are many nerves in the esophagus, ones that are not affected to cause heartburn, but none the less are affected. GERD can cause unexplained coughing and the affected nerves leading to the lungs can cause an asthma attack, but that is usually for someone who already suffers with asthma. If the refluxed liquid gets all the way up into the throat, it can cause a sore throat and hoarseness. Inflammation of the throat and larynx If refluxed liquid gets past the upper esophageal sphincter, it can enter the throat (pharynx) and even the voice box (larynx). The resulting inflammation can lead to a sore throat and hoarseness. As with coughing and asthma, it is not clear just how commonly GERD is responsible for otherwise unexplained inflammation of the throat and larynx.

riched antacids “to get their daily dose of calcium.” Antacids may be aluminum, magnesium, or calcium based. Calcium-based antacids (usually calcium carbonate), unlike other antacids, stimulate the release of gastrin from the stomach and duodenum. Gastrin is the hormone that is primarily responsible for the stimulation of acid secretion by the stomach. Therefore, after the direct acid-neutralizing effect of the calcium carbonate is exhausted, the secretion of acid rebounds. The rebound is due to the release of gastrin, which results in an overproduction of acid. Theoretically at least, this increased acid is not good for GERD. Treatment with calcium carbonate has not been shown to be less effective or safe than treatment with antacids not containing calcium carbonate, but the phenomenon of acid rebound is theoretically harmful. So, not using any brank names as mentioned in my research, I will just say, “be careful” and do some research. It isn’t harmful to use these occasionally but it really isn’t recommended. On the other hand, the advantages of calcium carbonate-containing antacids are their low cost and the calcium they add to the diet. Aluminum-containing antacids have a tendency to cause constipation, while magnesiumcontaining antacids tend to cause diarrhea. If diarrhea or constipation becomes a problem, it may be necessary to switch antacids or alternately use antacids containing aluminum and magnesium. So, tonight I have learned that GERD is not just “heartburn” and pop an antacid when it hurts. I have been under a doctor’s treatment for a long time and still learned more tonight than what I already knew. Sad isn’t it? One should know more after a visit to the doctor and especially after tests are done. One last thing. Note...that smoking also substantially reduces the clearance of acid from the esophagus. This effect continues for at least 6 hours after the last cigarette. Check out: MedicineNet.com Take good care of your body, Lois Cross, for Sean Cononie

These were the old dressers that would break all the time. We lost more TV's when the drawer would fall apart and the TV would hit the ground.
they wanted a building that would have a healthy immune system, a building that could be wiped down with bleach at any time, so my little head went to work, but my head did not work harder than the homeless who were about to give 1203 North Federal Highway a makeover that would last a very long time. A makeover that would save us money and time in the future and save us from those unnecessary trips to the doctors. At times we hear that the homeless are lazy people. And at times they really are. And at other times they are experts in their trade, they are getting a job done twice as fast and twice as cheap, and twice as good. But why does

given right to feed the poor publicly. You all know, I am sure, that we have a very difficult population. Aside from the mental and physical disability issues, we also have clients with serious medical issues. Everybody has their daily chores to do, and we do neighborhood cleanup along Federal Highway also. Not long after we moved in, we realized that it would be healthier for everyone if there were an easier way to handle those nasty germs. Doorways and doorknobs were cleaned and sanitized daily but that left the walls and floors. Many of the clients come with infections and diseases, but they are the homeless you and I love. So with all this the building itself gets sick quite often. And when she gets sick she passes her germs to the clients as well as staff so we have to make her feel The lockers are now in the walls so they can not break. The tile on the walls will prevent us from painting better all the time. So from all this, the staff decided the walls monthly.
This was the old bathroom area. No storage under the bathroom sink.
This is the new Low-BoyToilet. Because it is a one piece toilet, it requires less maintenance.
The new storage under the bathroom sink. Wow! Notice the tile on the walls. Now there is no painting required and the walls will not crack from water damage.
society label them as lazy people who do not want to work? Daniel Pike, our homeless maintenance worker is the man who started the makeover. Lois and I got together and told Daniel that we wanted the walls tiled, the floor tiled, and the complete bathroom tiled. We said tile the whole building except the roof. He looked at us as if we were crazy but we explained. We took Daniel to room 221 which is a room that we use for those who do not shower because maybe they are afraid of the water because of mental health reasons. This is the room

you can’t smell it about an hour later. On the other hand, The old closet that gave no sorting others will smell the perfume all day long; you won’t ability. Now the client will know because your nose gets use to the smell. Let’s also face where everything is. the fact that some of our homeless people have been living on the streets for some 20 years and have used the outside earth as their toilet and sometimes it is very hard to convince them to use the toilet. Let me get back to Daniel, I said Dan take a deep breath, he said are you crazy. I said next month when you smell this room it will be cleaner because the smell of dirty clothes and sickness will not penetrate and sit in the dry wall and carpet and the smell will go away. At times we search a room all day long to find the cause of an odor. It may take hours, sometimes we crawl on the floor with our nose to the carpet or search for a pair of smelly shoes or socks that may be buried in someone’s drawer. At that time he knew that rooms would smell much better and The new tiled shelves will give the we all could be much healthier. So our little Daniel who clients more room for personal items, has 67 days clean stopped and went to his computer and dirty clothes, and shoes. The best thing designed what I call the room of the future for the homeabout tiling walls and shelves is that less; a place where they could feel like they have prithere is no need to up-keep by painting. vacy, a place where they could watch what they wanted on TV and answer their own phone. This is the start of the Cosac room of the future. Don’t forget we come from a place that was worse then the slums and moved into the best-looking shelter in the USA with the best amenaties Not only will they have such as cable TV. an in-house TV for in Space is always a problem here and most shelters limit the person to one bag of -house messages and clothes and that is it. When we moved in we had nice black lacquer dressers for their life skills classes over clothes but those dressers only lasted about 16 months. They fall apart because of the wear and tear that our clients do on furniture and fixings. We also had drawers on wheels the TV, they will have for under their bunk beds but those too wore out because they were used like regular the ability to watch full drawers. He found dead space in the walls and made lockers out of tile, new shower tiled run movies. Now that’s walls, new reset lights, and wires in every wall that gave us the ability to assign TV and state-of-the-art phone per bed instead of per room. There is a large TV hanging from the ceiling and technology. Mounted Televisions there will be a wireless computer with Internet ability so they can check for jobs online or do self help lessons over the World Wide Web. By the way, We are so thankful for our why would we want to have The old bathroom walls needed rooms so nice? In the field of to be painted monthly. Now the new and improved shelter. recovery you have two types of walls are tiled! rooms. When people are doing well you keep moving them up the ladder. If they slip you move them down. This is known as tier incentive programs. For instance when a person comes in to the program you give them maybe the mat on the floor, three meals a day, a real tight curfew and some privileges. When they start to show they’re improving maybe you give them a room with cable TV instead of a TV that gives you just a few stations. As they keep improving you give them a room with unlimited long distance, not so tight curfew allowing them to stay out longer, and a better looking room. The plan is to let them know when they do well, that is what the normal life looks like. And when they are in the lower grade rooms they look to see how and what they can do to improve to get the better rooms. The good part about this new plan is that all rooms will be hygiene perfect no matter how well they do. Here at Cosac it is a guaranteed right to be safe and not exposed to unnecessary germs like most of the older missions and the way Cosac use to be. So now that you know Dan is not lazy, and the helpers aren’t lazy and one special person by the name of Paul who has had his ups and downs is not lazy let me tell you the problem. The problem is it cost us about $4700 to do each room with tile and labor. We got some tile donated last year, enough to do about three more rooms for the floor but now we have to come up with the money to do all the rooms. We want the ability to do all the rooms in just three months. We have about 18 more rooms to do. The good news is, it will save us money in the future having less maintenance cost and it will be much easier to clean up things when they develop. We will also save money on the tile cutting our cooling bill. It will be clean, great looking, nicer to live in and all around it is the perfect picture done. So we are asking you, the great readers to help us make our place better, nicer and all the above. We have not started to build our wall of hope on the mortgage burning party but when we complete this project we will also add your names to our wall of hope and in reality it is the wall of fame to those who have helped us. If you have it in your ability to write a check to pay for a room that would be great, if you don’t and you have an extra bag of thin set or maybe a GFI or even a few boxes of tile we will be glad to take them off your hands. So, this is where

ur campaign still exists. If we can’t get the mortgage paid off, we would love an interest rate of about 6 percent on the outstanding balance. This would save us about $2000.00 a month. Our mortgage payment go down from $8400.00 a month to approximately $6400.00. We would need the remaining balance financed over 30 years. So, if anybody can find us a mortgage, please let us know.

However, Duchess saw the life of the homeless in a different fashion after becoming homeless herself. Since she did not play the system very well, she became a chronic homeless person. ute, all this negative energy that you project. It paralyzes your ability to be creative and enjoy everything that Mother Nature has to offer. Sand is free, sea shells are free, flowers are free. So many things that we take for granted or don’t even notice are right under our very own nose. Art Therapy is a “back to basics” way to feeling better about our self esteem. A little glue, a little paint and we can go back in time and regain our innocence as when we were those free spirited children. I can sit here and tell you step by step how to complete an Art Therapy assignment. But that goes against the beauty of the healing process. You are your guide, your inner self. Follow your heart, reach into your soul and you will learn that you will not disappoint yourself. On the contrary, you will be pleasantly surprised by the outcome of your talent through your expression of art. Everyone thinks that they’ve got it bad. Financial problems, depression, divorce, death, abuse, etc. The list can go on forever. Should a person wallow in misery for all eternity? I think not. Get up off the floor, crawl out of your hole as the sun still sets as sure as it rises. Life goes on and so must you. Be it a poem, a letter of expression, a flower made from a bobby pin and a tissue, a pencil sketch or pasta shells on a bracelet string, the sky is the limit, your energy infinite. little selfish. “ I can’t do this, it’s stupid. I’m a CEO of a major corporation,” or “Art Therapy is not for him, he’s mentally challenged,” or “she can’t do this, she has a learning disability.” These are all excuses for people that have a fear of failure. Nobody wants to admit that they’re a loser. But who told you to accept that title? No-one person should possess that ultimate power over you. What is a loser? Someone who lost a card game? A kid who lost a race? A father who lost his credit card? What is a winner? A gambler who hits the jackpot? A girl who marries rich? A student who aced the test, but stole the answers? You tell me. I recently met with renowned artist and philanthropist Elyahou Lallouz at a seminar catering to the growing number of people who have taken up learning about healing through colors. His works are identified somewhere between Picasso and Matisse and are in private collections worldwide, gracing the walls of former President Bill Clinton to a nook of magnate developer Donald Trump’s palatial midtown place he calls home. Although Lallouz studied the arts, he professes that his talents are natural, somewhat innate. “Art is my oasis. I share that ‘flawless diamond’ with people who can feel the colors. I have refused to sell my art to individuals who are buying it to match the color scheme of a room. A painting is something that you must choose carefully. It actually will bring tears to your eyes when you see that a person that was addicted to drugs, a person that was labeled by society as being a misfit because he did not have place to lay his head down to sleep is accomplishing such tasks. It will bring tears to your eyes when you see Dan’s work. When you see Paul’s woodwork you will say this man needs to be working for a furniture company that makes private furniture. But the good news is those tears can be easily wiped up on the tile instead of the carpet. -Sean Cononie Homeless Voice of Florida scononie@homelessvoice.org
everyday for the rest of your life. My works are a major investment, so I would insist that a purchaser is in love with my art. It’s a small price to pay.” Lallouz also shared his views about Art Therapy, “art is something that my children were fortunate enough to grow up with, meaning that they could wake up everyday and see original, not posters or serigraphs, but true original, vividly colored dimensional works of art. That is a form of Art Therapy. Sometimes I take the kids to the beach and we build sandcastles. That’s Art Therapy. My name ‘Lallouz’ means ‘the light’ in Spanish and that’s what I bring to my life and work, 'la luz'.” Elyahou Lallouz will be donating several works to the South Florida Coalition for the Homeless raffle. Market value - just a mere EIGHTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. Thank you Elyahou Lallouz for ‘the light’ you share. So it’s time to reflect and take a fresh approach to your life, a whole new perspective.
