She smiled and said, papa Sean it will be here soon.

1. Americans are loaded with credit-card debt. The average American household with at least one credit card has nearly $9,000 in credit card debt, according to CardWeb.com, and the average interest rate runs in the mid- to high teens at any given time. 2. Some debt is good. Borrowing for a home or college usually makes good sense. Just make sure you don't borrow more than you can afford to pay back, and shop around for the best rates. Times are the most difficult for an expectant mom who is living in a shelter. Right after birth the State does all it can do to not allow the mother to have the baby and this is what happened to Shalonda. One day after the birth, Protective Services showed up and told her she couldn’t keep her baby. Although their intentions were done out of concern, I still could not sit back and let this happen. We fought and fought to make sure this new mother who did demonstrate that she could handle a baby at a shelter could indeed walk out of the hospital with her little one. Finally the state allowed her to keep the baby. Ok mom picture yourself right now in the same situation. How would you feel? Picture yourself in the hospital

Here are some precautions recommended when you are swimming or practicing other water sports: 1) Review your Seizure Control to determine whether water sports are appropriate at this time. 2) Do not swim alone. Always swim when a Lifeguard or Experienced Swimming Buddy is near. 3) Life Jackets are recommended (especially) when you are swimming in water that is not as clear as a Swimming Pool. 4) Do not get Over-Tired or Too Cold in the water. KNOW YOUR BODY. 5) Don’t let your Seizure Meds. get Wet – many are known to lose their effect when exposed to Water. 6) If Flashing Lights bring on your Seizures – wear Appropriate Eye Gear to Reduce the effect of Light Reflected on Surfaces.

3. Some debt is bad. Don't use a credit card to pay for things you consume quickly, such as meals and vacations, if you can't afford to pay off your monthly bill in full in a month or two. There's no faster way to fall into debt. Instead, put aside some cash each month for these items so you can pay the bill in full. If there's something you really want but it's expensive, save for it over a period of weeks or months before charging it so that you can pay the balance when it's due and avoid interest charges. 4. Get a handle on your spending. Most people spend thousands of dollars without much thought to what they're buying. Write down everything you spend for a month, cut back on things you don't need, and start saving the money left over or use it to reduce your debt more quickly. 5. Pay off your highest-rate debts first. The key to getting out of debt efficiently is to first pay down the balances of loans or credit cards that charge the most interest, while paying at least the minimum due on all your other debt. Once the highinterest debt is paid down, tackle the next highest, and so on. 6. Don't fall into the minimum trap. If you just pay the minimum due on credit-card bills, you'll barely cover the interest you owe, to say nothing of the principal. It will take you years to pay off your balance and potentially you'll end up spending thousands of dollars more than the origi-

nal amount you charged. 7. Watch where you borrow. It may be convenient to borrow against your home or your 401(k) to pay off debt, but it can be dangerous. You could lose your home, or fall short of your investing goals at retirement. 8. Expect the unexpected. Build a cash cushion worth three months to six months of living expenses in case of an emergency. If you don't have an emergency fund, a broken furnace or damaged car can seriously upset your finances. 9. Don't be so quick to pay down your mortgage. Don't pour all your cash into paying off a mortgage if you have other debt. Mortgages tend to have lower interest rates than other debt, and you may deduct the interest you pay on the first $1 million of a mortgage loan. (If your mortgage has a high rate and you want to lower your monthly payments, consider refinancing.) 10. Get help as soon as you need it. If you have more debt than you can manage, get help before your debt breaks your back. There are reputable debt counseling agencies that may be able to consolidate your debt and assist you in better managing your finances. But there are also a lot of disreputable agencies out there.

The COSAC Foundation has recently upgraded their homeless assistance services to include an in-depth life management skills class. Crossonie’s Learning Center will instruct homeless individuals on many issues that cause or affect homelessness. The areas of study will include S.T.D. prevention, drug education and relapse prevention, budgeting and banking, anger management, nutrition and dieting, and coping skills. These tools will help our homeless clients rehabilitate so they can again function properly in everyday society. Upon completion of the 17-class repertoire, Crossonie’s Life Management Skills booklet, and Crossonie’s Life Management Skills video, students will

hy is it that some consider helping the homeless to be equivalent to that of being conned into a sales pitch? When I first discovered my passion for offering help to the homeless, I'd been loud and vocal. I was eager to express my ambition in assisting people left in unfortunate circumstances, such as that of no longer being provided shelter and suitable living conditions. I was naive in believing that many others must feel the same. Then again, I was only 16 at the time. What I didn't prepare myself for though, was the almost frightening lack of compassion most of, not only my peers, but elders, seemed to express. Most of which, still do. What I found disturbing most was the remarks that revolve around those of us who do choose to support our homeless citizens. I repeatedly find myself being subjected to responses such as: “There is no excuse for being homeless, I don't BUY THAT!” This seems to be the common reaction from a large percentage of our homeless crit-

ics. My question, in return, is A n d , exactly when was it established y o u that a purchase is what it is being should made? And, what, exactly, is it c o n sider yourself naive if you bethat is being SOLD? institutionalization, only complicates the issue further. Mentally ill who are discharged to nursing homes, hotels, single-room dwellings, and low-income housing typically end up homeless. More over, decreased funding for low-income housing and decreased federal aid to disabled persons increases the problem. Yet, sadly, the belief that homelessness is simply a marketing technique still continues to over shadow the disturbing reality of what really it is that precedes homelessness in the first place. Things like unemployment, public assistance cuts, and increased domestic violence...all of which largely contribute to homelessness...continue to be overlooked, deemed invalid, and go unnoticed. Meanwhile, so many of our citizens continue to pre-judge the homeless, in the inexcusably ignorant fashion that they always have. While, it need not be noted that everybody is entitled to their own opinion, what should be the main focus of many is the larger picture, and not the small details surrounding. The larger picture being that we can help each other in surviving. So, forget about the sales pitch. Nobody is asking you to buy anything, because the gift is happiness--and nobody can put a price on that. Nicole.

hy is it so easy for us to look at one's life and pass judgment? Why do we as people assume or speculate some people are in dilemmas just for the sake of it? There are several reason why I ask this question. I encountered a young man I know and we where having a conversation about an acquaintance of ours or should I say a cousin of mine. This relative of mine had gotten himself into a predicament that was unbearable. So I began to share with the young man what has happened to Jack, and immediately he began to ridicule and insult Jack, making disturbing

ur campaign still exists. If we can’t get the mortgage paid off, we would love an interest rate of about 6 percent on the outstanding balance. This would save us about $2000.00 a month. Our mortgage payment go down from $8400.00 a month to approximately $6400.00. We would need the remaining balance financed over 30 years. So, if anybody can find us a mortgage, please let us know.

comments and insane remarks towards him. As he spoke I began to examine Jack’s life in silence. We all have made mistakes at some point and time in our lives knowingly and unknowingly, not knowing or caring what the consequences could be. We took that risk and made our decision on limited informatio n, not realizing our lives would take a turn for the worst. I’m not here to make excuses for one's faults, but we as people need to be very careful when passing judgment on someone , especially when we know nothing about the person or their situation. So, I must ask this

question again. Why is it so easy for us to look at someone's life and pass judgment? Perhaps it makes us feel worthy about ourselves or do we think we are not as tainted as some people or maybe it is easy to look at those less fortunate than us and boast our own egotism. I had the opportunity of visiting First Baptist Church in Ft. Lauderdale, where they have a homeless outreach ministry facilitated by Ms. Judy and Mr. Jim and a host of volunteers. They provided me with a brochure of the ministry, and I must tell you I was shocked they really do reach out to the people and assist the best way possible. One thing that really got my attention is that on Wednesdays they pro-

The individuals I spoke with are not delighted about their circumstances. vide for this child. So why this mom and what conditions were not good enough for her to keep her baby at a shelter? Lets stop and go back to define what good conditions mean for a newborn. Lets all go back to our days of childhood when we were taught how Jesus came into this world. Mom Mary and Dad Joseph had no heat but they did have animals around their baby Jesus to keep His little body warm. They did not have a lot of money. Because they could not buy their way into an inn they were placed in the stable behind the inn. Their mode of transportation was not of today’s world and the only things Mom Mary and Dad Joseph could say is that they had faith in God above. Now if a mom looked a Protective Service worker in the face and said everything will be all right because I have faith in God, would that faith be enough for the mom to keep the baby? We all

know what the answer is. Not a chance in the world. When did we all give up on God? I don’t know how we the people can protect moms who are poor because when you come right down to it, there are hardly any services out there for these poverty families. It takes an act of God to get them a bed in a family unit. We all are so eager to make sure the little ones have a roof over their heads, but we service providers, including this service provider, we sometimes need to be more understanding when it comes to moms and dads who may not have the ability to care for a little one. Should we jump to the telephone and call the state or should we get off our high horse and say, “No mom this is the way you do this, No mom your baby has to be fed this way.” Yes we have to protect the baby but I have this hidden feeling that God above will allow each and every mom the chance to be a good parent. We need to provide more

than a place for them to stay, we need to make sure they have these services prior to the baby coming out. What a ridiculous world we live in. If you call protective services and tell them there is a mother out there who is pregnant living on the streets their answer is, it does not matter until the baby is born. Maybe if it did matter, mom would be ready and able to care for her offspring a little bit better then having no services while she is expecting. In fact it would be a lot cheaper for the State to offer these services and mandate them if their will be future plans to remove the child at birth. Shalonda may God give you the faith to provide for your child, may you have faith in God to provide stable housing for your little one. May God send down his angels to help you. May you buy a winning lotto ticket so you can get out of this mess. It’s hard enough for an individual to fully recover from homelessness let alone a single mom

e all know that the Homeless Voice always tries to come up with ways to earn extra money for our shelter system. As you know the cities are trying to kill us. of their lack of funds. Most of the emergency rooms will only give us for free , older medication because it is very inexpensive when in fact there are many other new types of medication that can control the condition better . When someone does have a seizure, it sometimes makes them embarrassed to go back to their job site because having a seizure is not too attractive. In many cases a person who has a seizure sometimes will

urinate or defecate on themselves which is very embarrassing to them. You see being homeless is a lot harder than one would think. It is not an easy job to be homeless. With having seizures, it also brings on bouts of depression and therefore the person may pick an addictive drug to calm their feelings when in fact they are now making it easier to have their next seizure because of the addictions. One last question, if a dad like above could not work because of a seizure condition do you

think he would have a home for his family? Chances are the family would also become homeless. -Sean Cononie Homeless Voice of S. Florida scononie@homelessvoice.org
