Man's inhumanity to man is caused by his lack of understanding of how to be happy. He has little knowledge of the love, faith and power of God and the loving laws that God designed for our eternal happiness. We are in a war between good and evil, God and the Devil, goodness and wickedness, flesh and spirit, angels and devils, love and hate, life and death, joy and misery! Therefore we must not only defend our human rights, but we must also fight the much greater warfare of the spirit with the far more powerful weapons of faith, love and compassion, as well as words and deeds of kindness. New shelter to operate for Super Bowl By JORDAN RODACK The Times-Union As thousands get set to pour into downtown Jacksonville next month for the Super Bowl gala, local homeless advocates have made efforts to help transients off the streets. A new temporary shelter for 300 homeless will open its doors at the shuttered Stanton School downtown. The additional shelter will be open 24 hours a day starting Jan. 25 and will close Feb. 7, the day after the Super Bowl.
The Emergency Services and Homeless Coalition of Jacksonville, which is opening the shelter, has raised $60,000 in private donations to run the place. The city was not a contributor, said Wanda Lanier, executive director of the coalition. The building itself was donated by Edward Waters College. Downtown will be the scene of the fourday SuperFest party, which is expected to draw 100,000 visitors daily. Mayor John Peyton announced a citywide
cleanup Monday to prepare for the event, but city officials and homeless advocates said homeless people are not targets for removal from the streets. The opening of the temporary shelter also is not an attempt to drive the homeless out of view from the throngs of visitors expected to come to town, Lanier said. Rather, with shelters already over capacity and with additional homeless people expected to arrive in search of temporary work, the need for another facility was

there, Lanier said. Currently, Jacksonville shelters can accommodate 600 people. On any given day about 3,000 people are homeless throughout the city, many of them downtown, Lanier said. "For people who are homeless and mentally ill, that [the event] could be very scary for them," Lanier said. "We just want to make sure there is a safe place for people to go." In addition, the number of transients is expected to swell during the Super Bowl as many come to Jacksonville looking for part-time work, although no figures were available on Continued page 6

SUPER BOWL SHELTER Cont. from page 5 how many, Lanier said. Thao Costis, assistant executive director of SEARCH, a Houstonbased homeless service, said she did not notice an increase of transients traveling into the city for the Super Bowl last year. Sherry Burns, executive director of the I.M. Sulzbacher Center in Jacksonville, said some people have already questioned the intentions of opening up the shelter during the Super Bowl. "People are always looking for the dark side," she said. "In this case, for once people are doing the right thing for the right reason and I guess it's just human nature to find out what's 'really' going on." She noted that homeless are not required to stay in a shelter and there would be no busing of the homeless to the shelters in Jacksonville. "It's not a sweep, it's the exact opposite", Burns
said. "It's trying to accommodate the needs of people we expect to be on our doorstep so they won't be out in harm's way during the actual Super Bowl." Frank Mackesy of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, who is coordinating Super Bowl security, said the homeless will not be treated any differently during Super Bowl week than any other day. "Being homeless is not a crime and the only time we truly interact with the homeless is when they are violating a city ordinance or state statute," Mackesy said. Peyton said people should not read anything into the new shelter. "Naturally with the Super Bowl coming here, there will be a heightened sense of awareness and increased visitors including homeless here," he said. "So we want to make sure that if there is an increase
in capacity, we have the capacity to meet it. And I think it's very proactive and a smart way to try to help people, not to hide people." Some homeless in Jacksonville are wary but welcomed the idea for the temporary shelter. "I'm sure we're not wanted around," said Kenny Dudley, who has been staying at the I.M. Sulzbacher Center for the last five weeks. "Out of sight and out of mind." But he noted that there is a need for additional shelter space. "As many homeless people as I've seen, if there were one or two more shelters open, it would help a lot," he said. Otto Hasenback, another Sulzbacher resident who along with his pregnant wife has been homeless since Nov. 6, agreed with Dudley, saying the opening of the new shelter "is not a bad thing, but not a good thing" either.

numbers make sure they are four to six inches high, and a contrasting color to the background color of the building. Dogs as a deterrent: There are many things that can make a home structurally more secure against burglars. Alarm systems, secure windows, and top quality dead bolt locks are just a few relatively easy security devices that can be installed for added security. One of the most effective deterrents, however, doesn’t have anything to do with the actual structure of a home. A dog will often scare away even the boldest of thieves. Not many burglars will risk being bitten by a dog and, best of all; a dog will let a home-owner know when strangers are approaching the house. Burglar alarm systems: A well-installed, properly utilized electronic security system can result in peace of mind for a family while also making a home highly burglar resistant. It will not, however, make a home burglar proof. Before buying a system check on the reputation of the manufacturer. It’s a good idea to ask for a list of current or recent customers and contact them for their opinion of the company’s product. Find out if the system causes a substantial number of false alarms and make sure it has battery backup power so it works during power outages. Criminals in general and burglars in particular, often double their
efforts during outages because they are less likely to get caught. If possible, find out the education and experience of the companies installers. Ask if the company offers assistance in getting reduced insurance premiums, and if there is a warranty and maintenance contract for the system. A reputable company should provide both. Contract at least two or three companies and compare their systems and prices before deciding to purchase one.
Don’t be an easy target: Don’t hide a key around your house. Don’t put personal identification on key rings. Don’t leave windows open. Don’t leave doors unlocked. Don’t leave valuables in the open. Make sure all tools and ladders are put away. -Sean Cononie
