eeping your family out of crisis helps prevent the chance of becoming homeless. Here at the Homeless Voice we want to do more than just help the Homeless, it is in our hearts to prevent all new cases of homelessness and that is why we must educate. Did you know that there is a 65 percent chance of becoming homeless if a child is abducted by a parent who does not have custodial rights? Why is this? Because the community does not respond financially like they do to a stranger abduction. Keeping your home safe from abductors or regular burglaries is easier that one might imagine. We all want to protect our loved ones, especially the little ones, from any unnecessary harm and most of the time you can make your home safer for just a few hundred dollars. If you already have a home alarm through ADT, Brinks or another carrier it is also important to understand your alarm system fully. Today, most people think that the alarm they purchased will sound off it an intruder enters their home in any way, but in some cases it wont. National standards indicate that most people only protect their three major exit doors and only have a motion sensor by their big picture window. They often fail to protect other windows in the home and there is a good reason for this. It is because most alarm companies encourage brand new customers by offering a flat rate special of $99.00 for installation and a $19.95 monthly service charge. Fear of “losing the sale”, because most salespeople work on a commissionCall (954) able basis, make the salesperson only sell the basics to get the customer. And in most cases they fail to

This is something you may want to attend to:

oogle has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house. Everyone should be aware of this!!! Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing my telephone number in google.com. My phone number came up, and when I clicked on the MapQuest link, it actually mapped out where I live. Quite scary!! Please look up your own number. Read below for details. Think about it--if a child, ANYONE gave out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/ she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: www.google.com. Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your phone number. Removal takes 48 hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea just to check. If your number does come up if you hit map, it will show you a direct map to your house. Please forward on to friends and family.

HOMELESS VOICE This month has not been a great month for the homeless. Our Volunteer Director is now in the hospital once again for his meningitis. We ask all of you to pray for his health and for God to give him the strength to finish what he has started here at the shelter. We are still working on getting our mortgage paid off so we will not have to fundraise any longer. So much effort attached with so little time does not make this easy. HEALTH

I

mpetigo is a skin infection that is generally caused by one of two bacteria: Group A streptococcus or Staphylococcus aureus. Impetigo usually affects preschool- and school-age children, especially in the summer months. A child may be more likely to develop impetigo if his skin has already been irritated or injured by other skin problems, such as eczema, poison ivy, insect bites, or skin allergy to soap or makeup. When impetigo is caused by Group A streptococcus, it begins as tiny blisters. These blisters eventually burst to reveal small wet patches of red skin that may weep fluid. Gradually, a tan or yellowish-brown crust covers the affected area, making it look like it has been coated with honey or brown sugar. Impetigo that is not caused by Group A streptococcus is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus. This type of impetigo may cause larger fluid-containing blisters that first appear clear, then cloudy. These blisters are more likely to stay intact longer on the skin without bursting. Signs and Symptoms Impetigo may affect skin anywhere on the body but commonly occurs in the area around the nose and mouth. Impetigo is characterized by blisters that may burst, ooze fluid, and develop a honey-colored crust. Impetigo may itch, and it can be spread by scratching. The infection usually spreads along the edges of an affected area, but may also spread to other areas of the body. Contagiousness Impetigo is contagious. Children can spread impetigo from one

area of the body to another when they touch themselves with fingers that have been in contact with scratched, infected skin. When someone has impetigo, the infection can spread to other household members on clothing, towels, and bed linens that have touched the person's infected skin. It can also be spread among playmates or classmates who come in contact with infected skin. Treatment Impetigo is usually treated with antibiotic ointment. If the impetigo has spread to many areas of the body, or the ointment isn't working, your child's doctor may prescribe an antibiotic pill or liquid. If your child's doctor has prescribed an oral antibiotic, make sure that your child takes it on schedule for the full number of days prescribed. If your child's doctor has ordered an antibiotic ointment, apply it as directed. Gently wash areas of infected skin with clean gauze and antiseptic soap daily. If an area of skin is crusted, soak it first in warm soapy water to remove any layers of crust. It is not necessary to completely remove all of the crust but it is important to keep the area clean. To keep your child from spreading impetigo to other parts of the body, cover infected areas of skin, if possible, with gauze and tape or a loose plastic bandage as instructed by your child's doctor or nurse. Keep your child's fingernails short. Duration With antibiotic treatment, healing should begin within 2 to 3 days. A child with impetigo may return

to school when the infection is not contagious. This usually is about 48 hours after treatment is started. Prevention Good hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing, can help prevent impetigo. Use soap and water to clean your child's skin and be sure the child takes regular baths or showers. Pay special attention to areas of the skin that have been injured, such as cuts, scrapes, bug bites, areas of eczema, and rashes caused by allergic reactions or poison ivy. Keep these areas clean and covered. If someone in your family already has impetigo, make sure that fingernails are cut short and that the impetigo sores are covered with gauze and tape. Prevent impetigo infection from spreading to other family members by using antibacterial soap and making sure that each family member uses a separate towel. If necessary, substitute paper towels for cloth ones until the impetigo is gone. Separate the child's bed linens, towels, and clothing from those of other family members, and wash these items in hot water. When to Call Your Child's Doctor Call your child's doctor if your child has signs of impetigo, especially if he has been exposed to a family member or classmate with the infection. If your child is already being treated for impetigo, call the doctor if your child's skin doesn't begin to heal after 3 days of treatment or if a fever

develops. If the affected area becomes red, warm, or tender to the touch, notify your child's doctor. There are many diseases that people may get even when they live in a house that is clean. But this is one disease that has hit our Homeless People real hard. Too often, we see cases of Impetigo here at the shelter. People who live indoors and who have money can handle these little inconveniences very easy. However, our Homeless People have a real hard time dealing with it. In fact, when someone suffers from a case of Impetigo and is homeless it makes the chance of them getting a job nearly impossible. An employer will look at the hands of a person who may have a bad case of " Street Impetigo " and sees the sores on their hands and will not even consider giving a person a job because they are afraid of catching it. This is why communities must make sure that there are plenty of indigent healthcare services in areas heavily populated by the homeless. I hope you found this article interesting and remember not only are most people two paychecks away from becoming homeless but that there are many other reasons that keep a homeless person from being able to say " I am just two pay checks from putting a roof over my head" -WEB & COSAC Staff

n 1989, Jamie Dale Goodine was married and had a baby daughter. Five years later he was homeless, sometimes sleeping in an empty garage or a Volvo station wagon. Police say that Goodine, 43, was murdered, although they won't say how they determined he was killed. His body was found in a ditch early Monday near railroad tracks on U.S. 301. While detectives are investigating his death, Sarasota Police spokesman Jay Frank would not comment.

Court records show that Goodine once had a family life. A lawyer who handled his 1992 divorce remembers him as a typical client. At the end of the divorce, Goodine was even awarded custody of his then 4-year-old daughter. Goodine was given a year of probation after pleading no contest to a driving under the influence charge in 1996. The circumstances that led to his homelessness are unclear, and attempts to reach those who knew him were unsuccessful.

most young children these days. He knows this because everyday little Lily the angel (who will be 2 in August) wakes up and positions her Dora the Explorer lounge chair in front of the TV and screams DORA, DORA and then daddy Mark or mommy Sara run to turn the TV on to bring Dora to life. Thinking about the joy Dora would bring to the children by visiting the shelter, Sean went on a frantic search to find her. It was actually quite comical to watch Sean trying to find Dora. Then the confusion and pain suddenly came upon him, some effects of his meningitis and he stopped looking for Dora. At first we were not sure what to do but then Joyce came to the rescue and found her within minutes. We were all relieved to know Dora would be here in a matter of hours. The hours passed quickly, as they always do here at the shelter, everything was going fine, the minutes were closing in on Dora’s arrival and excitement filled the air as we awaited Dora’s appearance. Then it happened, we received a call that Dora was lost. For those who don’t know Dora, well she is an Explorer and is notorious for the Map she carries in her Back pack.

So Sean being the comedian that he is asked Dora if she misplaced the Map she carries in her Back pack. She answered him saying Swiper; (a little character on her show who is known for swiping everything) stole it. They chuckled, went over the directions and Dora was on her way again. Finally, Dora showed up. Sean’s voice came over the public address system announcing that Dora the Explorer had become homeless after the TV station did not pay her and that Dora was now at our doorstep. So Dora the Explorer now became Dora the Homeless Explorer. One of the kids came up to Lois and said Dora is just like us, she’s homeless now. While another one said, maybe she can go out to look for a job with my mommy. Then one of the little ones went over to Dora and asked her if she was going to go out tomorrow to sell the Homeless Voice newspaper. The kids were ecstatic playing and dancing with Dora. Not too long of a time passed before Sean’s granddaughters arrived. Little Autumn, who was born just this past December wasn’t fully aware what was happening but sensed something was up because she was smiling and cooing. Lily, on the other hand, who had just woken up from a nap in the car and was in the midst of rubbing the slumber from her eyes looked a bit confused about seeing Dora. It appeared as though Lily was wondering how Dora came out of the TV and was standing in front of her. A few minutes later we saw Lily go up to Dora and she gave her a great big hug and just wouldn’t let go. Then something humorous happened, Lois asked Dora if she knew Lily’s Dora the Explorer toothbrush story and Dora mutely shook her head

“Then it happened, we received a call that Dora was lost!”

and Lois really believed Dora knew that Lily was not allowed to watch Dora one day because Mark and Sara wanted to help Lily learn a new life skill about routines. So Lily was not permitted to watch Dora the Explorer that day. Well this didn't go over very well with Lily and she became so angry that she went into the bathroom, got her Dora toothbrush, took it back to the living room and threw the toothbrush at the TV, and let me repeat she's not even 2 years old! After a few minutes of Lois watching Dora silently answer questions by nodding (the role children’s characters take in public so children won’t hear their

voices) she realized Dora didn’t really know Lily’s Dora the Explorer toothbrush story and was just playing her part. As things died down, we received a message that the TV station called and they were going to start paying Dora again, so now she’s no longer Dora the Homeless Explorer. Everyone clapped, the kids said their farewells to Dora and she happily went back off to TV land again. Rumor has it that she may be back soon with her new found friend Elmo, from another TV show, so we’ll keep you posted! -Staff Reporter

educate a homeowner about the proper protection for their home. So, if you have a system that has motion sensors stop what you’re doing and go look right now to see if there are motion sensors in the rooms where your children sleep. After all, we want to protect those little ones from any danger. Especially with the threats we face today from sex offenders or others breaking into our homes. Now ask yourself, Are there extra levels of protection in your children’s rooms that will activate an alarm if someone enters their room without permission, such as through an exterior door or window? Is there any possibility that a bad guy can enter your home through a bathroom window and then enter your child’s room? Look at the case of little Jessica just a few months ago, could it be possible that her tragic death may have been prevented if a device was installed in her room? There are some devices that really work great and cost under $10.00. If you have motion sensors, do you keep them on when you’re at home? Will your system allow you to have motions devices on, in your child’s room

or other rooms your child spends time in (like a playroom) when you’re in another room of your house? Do you have motion sensors lights that go on when someone is near you windows or doors? If not, there are other ways to secure these areas quite simply. Then call your alarm company and say these words, “I want an alarm to sound if someone tries to come in my child’s room when we are home, when we are sleeping and when we are not at home”. See what the cost is. From what I know, in most cases it will cost about $150.00 for each extra level of protection. Then schedule all new equipment for a one day installation. That way you will avoid several service call tickets from being rung up. I would also recommend that you get an independent system, which is usually one little electronic part that costs under $20.00 and operates separate and independent of any other system. This means that it is one item that you can use for every window and every room. Let’s face it; you can never be sure if the alarm company salesperson or installer is a bad guy. Start a neighborhood crime watch list, pick up the phone and communicate with your neighbors. It’s easy to do if others cooperate. Some people work in the day and others work at night so you can have someone monitoring your neighborhood at all times. If a sex offender is walking through the neighborhood your telephone chain can begin. One neighbor can call the next neighbor and then that one can make a call to the next one until everyone knows he’s in the vicinity. You can also post pictures up in your home of area sex offenders and even post the type of car they drive. Don’t be afraid to post pictures and show them to children. Teach then to run and scream really loud if they see one on the street or while they are in a store. Don’t withhold information about sex offenders from your children because that information may save their life. There are many good websites you can visit for information about age appropriateness and sex offender information. Remember even very young children can sense danger! Now that I have told you about strangers who abduct children or commit sex crimes on them, let me tell you about the most likely candidates to hurt your child are. It is someone who you know. Like a, father, son, relative, coach or baby sitter. This is unfortunate but true. Don’t think it takes hours to molest a child because it can happen in a just a few minutes. Teach your children the bare facts about what is acceptable and what is not acceptable as far as people holding, touching and loving them. If your child goes to day care question them about what games they play. Ask them if

lot of great things are happening here at the agency. We are trying real hard to get our mortgage paid off so we can finally build the “Hall of Fame Wall” for our supporters. As some of you remember we are going to be placing supporter’s names on this wall. Once the mortgage is paid off we will start to make that wall that will list the names of you the supporters. You really have no idea how many of these names are from poor people, little kids, and even our homeless who once they leave here send back a check to help us reach our goals. Not only are we expanding we are in the process of developing a very large outreach team. We also are expanding our paper in Northern Florida in the Jacksonville and Orlando area. We feel that many homeless people will be able to pull their resources together and get off the streets by selling our paper in the North. Eventually we will expand to a small emergency shelter in the North part of the state. Times may be exciting however it is very hard to continue our plans with Sean only coming in to make sure we are ok. I say the word coming in, which is not the truth; Sean decided to stay here at the shelter while he is out sick. He does not want to be a couch potato; he tries real hard but soon must rest because his memory is not that good. He gets up and tries to start his day off by attempting to do some type of work but soon is reminded ( in a cute way so he is not offended) that he is making more mistakes causing a little bit more work for us. That is ok with us because we are trying to get his mind working at 100 percent. You should see him when

he forgets the names of his brand new grand kids Lily and Autumn. He gets so mad and typically punishes himself while he is calling out several names of the kids before he gets it right. Some of you may not know but Sean almost died last year from a serious attack which should have ended his life from Bacterial Meningitis. Most people who get bacterial meningitis die within a few hours if untreated, however in his case he was sick for two whole days with a blood count of 141,000 and a fever of 107 because a doctor misdiagnosed him with the flu. The simple fact that he should have been dead is a miracle he is alive. He does have some problems because when one is untreated or delayed treatment they normally have some left over side effects. To him, just being alive is a gift from God so he says to himself or usually reminds himself by making fun of his own disabilities to make light of the situation. I guess it helps with his depression. This should have not happened to him because he did go to the doctors but the doctor for a whole two days kept on telling him he had the flu and go home and rest and stop being a baby. Sean had all the classic signs of meningitis but the doctor missed them. A few hours after his last visit to the doctor, Sean was on life support in critical care and we at the shelter were in a total shock because without him we were scared because he has been the meat and potatoes of this place. Mark the person who makes this paper and who has been at Sean’s side for eight years since he was a teenager remembered the golden rules Sean told him. One day when Sean and Mark

Call 954-410-6275 or fill out form on page 3 were looking at the people going to the food line and talked about how it was in the very beginning and Mark said he could not believe how much this place grew, Sean told Mark that he needed to sit down and learn some things if something should ever happen to him. Sean told Mark that this place was too important and that is should always exist no matter what. The rules were simple minded but in reality they were like a buried treasure right out of a movie so planet Earth could continue to exist. To us here at the shelter, Cosac is planet Earth. The first rule was that every person in the world deserved a place to call home and when someone is rejected by other shelters we tell them this is their home for now. Sean said to Mark, “when your nerves tell you not to take someone, when your stress tells you not to take this person, when you feel that we can’t help this person, go out of your way and let them in with a smile on your face.” Then planet Earth became reality and Sean shared the trick to existence, he looked at Mark and said, “Bring in more money than you spend so this place will never close and this way you have it for unexpected emergencies.” The third rule Mark already knew, if God wants this place to be open, it shall be open. Lois went to be with Sean and

his parents and to see if Sean wanted an emergency policy to be made while he was very sick. (After all he is our Commander and Chief. We take that very seriously, this is a whole different world and without it being ran correctly this world could collapse in a matter of days.) Lois had to become Sean and be a Sean that was ready for any city that wanted to remove the Voice from its streets. When Sean woke up from his coma he gave her detailed instructions in case some of the people who wanted the Voice off the street would attack us. If they knew Sean was that sick it would have been a good time for them to try to pass laws. Without Sean calling press conferences and getting national people involved and a large staff of attorneys at his side it would have been real hard to survive. We did not want everything to hit us at once while he was incapacitated. So Lois became the Commander in Chief and then there was Ginny who kept planet Earth open for business and didn’t forget a trick. We kept it going and he was surely proud at the outcome. That was then and this is now and it has been very difficult for us to operate because of the economy but we are holding on. When we go to Sean and

together while it was touch and go with Sean. Since then we have been trying real hard to hold everything together. At times it is easy, which means we can take a little rest for a few hours and at other times the staff, (mostly all formerly homeless people) try their best to bring in the funds needed to keep these doors open. We have some terminology here, we have two time periods, pre meningitis and post meningitis and that is how we explain to Sean when he gets a little confused. By no way am I saying Sean is a vegetable, it is just hard with his memory, his motor skills, his eyes, sometimes he is altogether and you would not notice a change and then there are times that you can tell he has been through a very hard time. He rests most of the day in his office in the hospital bed, and lately it has gotten a little worse with his headaches and memory so he watches a lot of TV to keep his mind working. With the pre meningitis and the post meningitis terminology we really want to pay off this mortgage so we can tell Sean that we here at planet Earth developed two new terms. ask him a question, he now says, his brain is tired and that is a good thing that someone like you is here to run this place. He now is letting us make the decision we need to, to run this place we call planet Earth. Sean also suffers from double vision which can become fun for all of us here at the shelter. Sometimes he comes up with some major jokes so we all can laugh. To him he does not know it is a joke but to us we find it very funny. One day we took a family in with mom and dad and they had six kids. Sean saw the family and said, what are we going to do with this family of 12 kids? We never told him the family only had six kids. But after reading this article he sure will find out that that family only had six little children. When Sean got sick we thought that this was the end of the agency, however many prayers came in, little notes and get well cards came in from the public and because of those prayers we the staff held our planet Earth

die because they can’t have access to food, water and medicine? We would love to do more and create such an agency that can spread the word of making this Earth, your Earth a better place and when we make this Earth a better place our little planet Earth will be more secure. Please help us change to the term post mortgage. It is not difficult; see, we only owe a little money. Please go to your churches and ask them to support us. ell, when this article was written we had certain plans. However, Sean is bored while out sick and asked the staff to create and create more and more agencies to handle problems. He said, the shelter is too small and it's time we moved to a bigger place. He said, “Something that not only can handle the homeless but something that can be a resource center for disasters so we can serve the public in a matter of minutes if a disaster strikes. Something safe, something strong, something that can put out 5000 meals three times a day, something that is practical, something that can be used for other projects when disasters are not present. " We looked at him as if he was nuts because we are running everywhere trying to fill in his shoes. He thought a little bit more and then said, “Something that could provide learning labs for kids who cant afford computers, a place where parents can bring their kids to learn how to fight off an abduction, a place that can sign people up for food stamps, a place that will give poor people the right to learn skills and to certify them to work in a kitchen through a vocational training program, a place where poor parents can learn CPR so they too can save their children if they are drowning or choking or have a sudden heart attack, a place that will teach people how to start their own not for profits so they too can help change the world, a place that might even teach a poor child how to swim”. He said, “COSAC CARES and that is what we will name the new complex”. He said, “We will need millions”. We said, “We can’t service what we have now”. He said, “It is one thing to help the homeless but there needs to be awareness and prevention services so more people don't become homeless as well”. As he went back to his bed, where he spends most of his time since the meningitis he said, “Don’t worry, if God wants the place I just talked about to exist, it shall. We are here to make the world a better place and after we put something like this together we will go to every community and show them how to make these programs run too, with their own skills, their own support, and their own self sufficiency. This world is really the pits because there is so much heartache. Just look at all the abductions of kids and the way these killings are devastating so many parents. Kids are dying because they simply don’t have food to eat. We are going to go on a mission to teach what we have learned throughout the years to others and then they too will have a way to give something back to humankind”. This is his dream! -Cathy Freites
