ver the last five years or should I say six years we have developed all kinds of fund raising plans to get our mortgage paid off and for the most part we have done real good because of you the readers and the homeless who helped create such a beautiful place. We also thank the people of the “Friends Column.” Do you know if we had only 6000 people send us in their $15.00 a month we would make our monthly budget and we could also pay double mortgage payments? We don't have 6000 people but we have a lot and we are always looking for more. We thank all you givers out there. Even the ones who can only give a nickel, those nickels do add up. To give you an idea each month we have an estimated $4000.00 in donated nickels and my

friends that is a lot of nickels. We had over $3000.00 in pennies for a month and I can't tell you how long it takes to bag $3000.00 in pennies. Well, yes I can, it takes about 17 straight hours. And for the others who can’t afford to give at all I know you are praying for us because we could not do what we do now and in the past without you. The last few years have been a little hard on us and it has become a pretty difficult month for us. We as always are trying to stay open, keep the current budget go-

ing, paying off the current mortgage balance and of course dealing with the cities that are still in the process of removing us from the streets. First we had me with the Meningitis and staying out of work and then of course all the extras that come with the head damage I had such as memory loss and double vision. Then we had the few storms that caused floods in our offices and losing all of our computer systems and paper work. That caused us to lose a whole lot of paper work but we kept our back up files for our

e the Oct. 18 story Lauderdale commissioners balk at low-price housing deal: Now that the Fort Lauderdale City Commission has failed to take a stand on the affordable housing issue, I must ask why, and if not now, when? Last month, my proposal to the Hallandale Beach City Commission to finally write an ordinance to define affordable housing also failed. I think that 15 percent of all major developments should be set aside for affordable housing, which is the normal rate in Broward County. I proposed the rate to be $160,000-$180,000 for affordable housing and $180,000-$200,000 for workforce housing, which would be within reach of police officers, firefighters, and teachers. Currently, Broward County sets the rate at $230,000 for affordable housing, which is beyond the reach of service personnel and city employees. Having served on our city’s Affordable Housing Board for more than five years, I can say that Hallandale Beach is the leader in affordable housing. But now the system is not working. Tallahassee has an ordinance to require developers to set a rate. It’s time for us, as elected officials, to take a stand, stop talking about it and do something before we force more of our workforce residents to leave South Florida. olice appear to be going to new lengths to get the homeless off the streets. Los Angeles Community Action Network videotaped cops arresting a homeless man on Skid Row for the unauthorized possession of milk crates. The video shows police officers confiscating crates, arresting the man and loading up what appear to be his belongings in a skip loader. It also shows officers humming the theme music from "Sanford and Son" through a megaphone. Community Action Network heads call the incident insensitive and say harassment of Skid Row homeless has increased with downtown's rush to upscale lofts and condominiums. Police Captain Andrew Smith says his officers have arrested only "one person for possession of milk crates."

f it's October or November, it must be time for the flu vaccine. Indeed it is, says Penny Kurst, director of nursing for the DeSoto Health Department. The first shipments of this year's vaccine have arrived for use by those considered high risk. Vaccines are also available in both Charlotte and Sarasota counties. This year, the reason to invest in a flu shot might extend beyond protection from three types of influenza expected to surface during flu season between now and February. There is some indication that the flu vaccine could help protect people should a pandemic of bird flu begin. (Continued on page 4)

Flu shots are ready when you are (Continued from page 1)

Dr. Robert Webster, perhaps the world's leading expert on bird flu, told a conference Friday that mice given a flu vaccine and then exposed to bird flu survived the deadly influenza in numbers at least twice expectations. Webster acknowledged that much more testing must be done before a link between regular flu vaccine and bird flu survival is established. At present, bird flu is not easily spread to humans from birds, but scientists fear the H5N1 virus could mutate into a form that transmits easily from human to human. A new outbreak in poultry was reported from China on Monday. Kurst said the initial 200 doses of vaccine she ordered will go to those 50 or older, those with chronic medical conditions, those who live in nursing homes, those who care for the sick and elderly, and children six months to 5 years of age. Kurst said the department travels to some locations where people need vaccinating, but for the most part the shots are given at the Health Department on Baldwin Street. A "walk-in" time is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays. The flu vaccine shot is $25 and protection against pneumonia is $35. Kurst said larger quantities of vaccine will arrive later this month. There should be no shortage, she said, as is now occurring in England. In Charlotte County, vaccines will be available at the Port Charlotte Town Center beginning Friday and continuing through Nov. 4. The shots, administered by Clinical Mobility, will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays at a cost of $30 for the flu shot and $40 for a pneumonia shot. All participants must be 4 years old or older, and anyone under 18 needs parental consent. Sarasota County offers flu shots at various locations which can be obtained by calling the flu information line at 941-861-2800 or by visiting www.sarasotahealth.org on the Web. Shots in Sarasota are $20. As they do each year, researchers tried to guess which flu strains might cause problems, and from their guess the vaccine was made to order.

The strains this year are A/New Caledonia, A/ Wisconsin and B/Malaysia. The "A" strains are most often responsible for the widespread outbreaks called pandemics. A number of insurance programs and Medicare will repay costs of the shots. Since influenza is caused by a virus, the widely known antibiotic drugs that fight bacteria are not effective. Indeed, only the antivirals Tamiflu and Relenza should be used this year, the Centers for Disease Control advises. Tamiflu, made exclusively by a Roche lab in Switzerland, has been in and out of short supply, since it is the primary drug used to fight bird flu in humans. Those known to be at risk for bird flu can follow a vaccine with a two-week preventive treatment of Tamiflu, the CDC advises. Webster's experiment that showed the flu vaccine might offer protection against bird flu involved about a dozen mice. The experiment "suggests there are some basic cross-protections," Webster told attendees at an infectious diseases conference in San Francisco. Webster works at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Dr. Kathy Edwards, a vaccine scientist at Vanderbilt University, said flu shots cut the risk that people will become infected with multiple flu strains. That, she said, happens in pigs, which can be infected with two or more viruses that then "reassort" to form a new, often deadly virus. Scientists have feared bird flu might attack a human already suffering from another form of flu, then morph into a new virus that can spread easily from person to person. The fewer people with the flu, the lesser the chances of that happening. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization said Monday that ducks now appear to be the major threat to spread bird flu. Infected ducks don't die and the virus can be found in their saliva as well as droppings. That means bird flu might be inhaled without a person being exposed to droppings. It's those droppings most often blamed for the spread of the virus in Asia. You can e-mail Robert Bowden at bob@sun-herald.com By ROBERT BOWDEN STAFF WRITER

Last month we started to really enhance our Burn that Mortgage Campaign. We did not do as good as we expected but in reality we did do good because anytime someone sends you a donation you are grateful even though you don’t make your goals. We are thankful for the people who helped us and for the people who could not help us out because I know their prayers are with us. We are getting there and we will indeed pay off this mortgage. So I ask you one more time to reach in and try to get others to help us meet our goal. In fact let’s all make a new goal. Look how much the friend’s column has grown over the years. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had to devote two whole pages to the friend’s column? Today I give you the challenge to bring five of your friends to our friend’s column so we can still keep on helping the ones who need help the most. Please remember it is going to be raining a lot during the next few months and we also need help with our rain budget. This money is saved for rainy days so when the vendors are not out there raising money for the homeless we can pull from the rain conserved funds. Please go to page 2 and follow the directions and let’s add some of your friends to this column.

Homeless woman robbed A 69-year-old homeless woman was awakened from her sleep and robbed early Saturday in front of a restaurant on East Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, police said. The robber asked Eunice Baker if Brasserie Las Olas, 333 E. Las Olas Blvd., was open and then demanded that Baker give him her money, said Fort Lauderdale police Detective Kathy Collins. The man grabbed Baker's bags but she resisted, Collins said. The strong-arm robbery occurred around 5:30 a.m. Some of Baker's skin from her elbow to her forearm tore during the tug-of-war and she also scraped her knees, Collins said. Baker made it to the Riverside Hotel, 620 E. Las Olas Blvd., and hotel staff called the police, Collins said. Baker was taken to the Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. The robber got away with bags containing personal items including a raincoat, Collins said. Police are looking to see if surveillance tape is available, she said. “Our detectives are diligently working on this and doing their best to come up with leads to determine who did this,” Collins said.

THE ' L I T T L E ' things As you might know, the head of a company survived 9/11 because his son started kindergarten. Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts. One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off in time. One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident. One of them missed his bus. One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change. One's car wouldn't start. One went back to answer the telephone. One had a child that dawdled and didn't get ready as soon as he should have. One couldn't get a taxi. The one that struck me was the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took the various means to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today. Now when I am stuck in traffic, miss an elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone... all the little things that annoy me, I think to myself, this is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment.. Next time your morning seems to be going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can't seem to find the car keys, you hit every traffic light, don't get mad or frustrated; God is at work watching over you. May God continue to bless you with all those annoying little things and may you remember their possible purpose.

computer and hard copies at my house so as we were in the process of regaining control of administration stuff, then came Wilma and Wilma caused us to lose our complete computer system and all our files. Well we thought that would be alright, then of course we followed our disaster plan and responded to my house post storm only once again to find out my roof came off destroying most of my house and all the contents and back up systems. When there is a storm approaching we take our data and also place it in a secure location as well as with a disaster team in a local hotel used by FEMA located next to the Broward County Emergency Operations Center. After a storm it is very important to be able to change from a homeless agency to a disaster agency bringing food and supplies to the ones who need it as well as having a communication system with satellite phones and radios to stay in touch with the other service providers who push out thousands of meals to victims. We also back up other agencies with man power so we do have to be able to have a work station outside shelter system and also in case the shelter is destroyed. A lot of people do not realize that when a storm approaches it takes us

about five days to prepare and even if the storm does not come our way it also takes about two weeks getting the shelter back to being able to operate fully. We call these days “Down days” meaning staff does nothing other than getting us back to normal so we become late in all forms and government paper work as well as even balancing our check books. To give you an example we still are five months past due on reconciling our check book as well as a few years late on tax paper work. Thank God the IRS understands and they know we are trying our best to do our paper work that is needed. Then we just got our office back from the damage of Wilma and we still got another $600,000 worth of work repairs to do at the shelter which is going to cause us to become even slower and more behind in our paper work. When we took the back up information to install in our new computer system with so much electrical damage to the shelter, it caused it to fry the lap top and now lose all the paper work. The good thing about this is, now we have two additional back up sites by a professional company that are located out of state in a community that does not have natural disasters like we do down here. With all the damage we had to

e all can sit back at times and ask ourselves why is this happening to me?…Bad luck we call it , or we say life is not fair. We all must sit back and ask ourselves how life really is. As a person living in a house I am sure some of us don’t sit back and thank the good Lord for what we have, instead we may sometimes say I wish I had one more bed room. It is Ok to want to have a bigger house but it is not OK to not appreciate and be thankful for what we have no matter how small it is. When we are short on our bills let’s be thankful that we had enough to pay to keep a roof over our own head. It would also be wise to be thankful that your mom and dad have the funds they need in retirement not to be in the streets like so many other seniors who can’t make it month to month. To our vendors they should be thankful that someone has taken the time to give them a donation no matter the size. Our vendors should be thankful when someone says “no thank you” because that person has free speech. Lets not all forget that we should be thankful for things we don’t have. Such as HIV, cancer or other diseases that slowly kill you. We should be thankful we don’t have a big SUV right now in our life because maybe we could not afford to drive it now when the gas prices jump over $3.00 per gallon. You may have low income and may be upset that you did not get a student loan but forget that you were given a free grant that you do not have to pay back. Some of us may not be thankful that President Bush is the president. But we also forget and be thankful that at least we have the right to vote when so many others in the world have no say in their own government. No matter how bad your day is going, no matter how sad you are, no matter how mad you are just remember you are alive and be thankful that you have food to eat. If you feel that no one in the world loves you, know that God does love you. He says that in the Bible and God does not lie… Written By Sean Cononie

back and we are bringing them back as well as adding some new plans to finally pay the whole complete mortgage off and when this happens we will invite all of you to help burn those mortgage papers. We will have one big party, then after we clean up the party we shall get together and figure out how to expand. We have been running out of room. There has also been a very big increase in the numbers with the elderly who are receiving social security income and cannot make it on their level of income and end up homeless. We are still getting the same number of families who show up at our door but considering we are allowing over-nighters who are not in our program to come in for the night we felt that families should not stay here and we place them for a night in a controlled spot here at the shelter or we place them in a hotel if they do not have any major issues that are causing harm to the children. I can sit here right now and tell you over the years I have met some beau-

tiful families and one of them named their new born after me named Sean Anthony Perez. On the other hand I have seen some real bad families and all you can say is “Oh My God.” Years ago one dad was about to strangle their own blood born infant with a plastic bag and then kill his wife and him but we got there in time to stop this horrible act. Thank God it did not happen because I do not think I could ever still run this place because I would have been in the mental ward for a few years. So once we all figure out how to pay this place off we all then will be picking out the paint color for the next COSAC Shelter. Well here goes the meat and the potatoes of our fund raising request…. I thought before we give you the plans we have I must stress the words AMWAY to you. A few years back I told you that we needed to take the word AMWAY and change the words to A WAY TO PAY OFF THE MORTGAGE. Where does AMWAY come in to play? We can say and be pretty certain that AMWAY is the parents of

this page in the paper and ask your church leaders and elders to allow you to speak so they too can be involved. The One Time Donation for the Holidays This plan is where you try to collect donations from everyone you know asking them to send in a Holiday Gift to the COSAC Homeless Assistance Centers Inc. You can buy a package of Holiday Cards and pre address our address on the envelope and hand out the cards to your friends. You can include a little message in the card asking them to send in their donation to the listed address on the flyer. Two Christmas’s ago we had one lady by the name of Cindy, and thank you Cindy, who bought three boxes of fifty cards and passed them to her friends asking them each to send in their special donation, we got 101 cards out of the 150 that she passed out making a total donation of $7,070.00. Come to find out she was an Amway Rep for about ten years of her life. She used her Network Marketing skills to reach out. The Matthew Plan This is the plan that asks your church to send in a one time nice size donation. If we had about 500 churches that each sent in a check for $1,000 then we all will burn those mortgage papers and have a great feast and feed many more according to the book of Matthew. We do get many referrals from the churches and please have your church come by and see this community center for the poor people. Your Church Leader will want to come and live here and help us out. Penny drive We all have seen those unwanted pennies in our car, in our home in our desk drawers; and hopefully soon those unwanted pennies can be brought here to the shelter. This can be a lot of fun. Last year we had a young boy at the age of 15 who collected pennies from all his friends and family. He went around to his neighbors and also collected pennies but a lot of those people also gave him checks and other coins that made his efforts reach almost $3500. The fun part of this penny drive was bringing the pennies here. He collected almost 1600 lbs of pennies. Search with Us over the Internet Go to your search engine and enter in goodsearch.com. You search the internet just like you do with Google and Yahoo and you get the same results and it is entirely free to you. It is powered by Yahoo Search. For every search you do, the Good Search Company will donate .01 to us here at the Homeless Voice. You can also ad their link to your employer web browser so it is in your tool bar which makes it very easy to use. After you get to your link you will see enter in the Homeless Voice and it will prompt you to the COSAC Homeless Assistance Center, verify it and then whenever you go to that page our name should be there. Here is the fun part… You can see every time you search how much money was raised for us. After you verified your charity you then go to and enter your search words. When you go to this page it will give you directions to install in your employer or other search engine so it will always be there. Basically it will become your homepage. AOL Users may have to clear your footprints or cookies every so often so it automatically can be used in their tool bars.

Please use this site honestly. Fraudulent searches will result in a charity being de-listed. Recent Searches: disinfects smallpox, disinfects small pox, disinfects smallpox, disinfect smallpox

Here is the most exciting part, send this link with a little note telling your friends and families to do the same thing as you did. This means you are going to Network Market with this plan. You will have so much fun watching it grow. I check it daily and even though we are new it is growing and growing very fast. I ask you please help make our Thanksgiving Season a very special one and help us until we have burned those mortgage papers. Also please remember there are about 80,000 to 100,000 people who donate to us monthly and we will still allow you all to jump in to any of these fun plans…And please help us change the meaning of the word AMWAY, to the new meaning of a way to pay off the mortgage. You can send in your checks to The COSAC Homeless Assistance Center, Inc Or make your donation online P.O. Box 292-577 at www.HomelessVoice.org Davie, Florida 33329 Or call 954-924-3571 and ask for the Campaign to pay off our mortgage department. We can do it. Do you know what else makes our Thanksgiving Special? It is the fact that those who can’t help us we know your prayers are with us. So we shall say may the Lord Bless you. -Sean Cononie
