Happy Valentine’s Day!

alentine's Day is not just to be celebrated by romantically involved couples. The festival is celebrated to express love to anyone we are close to. We can therefore celebrate Valentine's Day with friends, siblings, parents, grandparents, teachers or anyone who makes a difference in our lives with their affection and support. We can take the opportunity of Valentine's Day to express our love and gratitude to all persons we love. And what better way to do so than by saying it with a gift of roses, chocolates, beautiful cards or the best and cheapest way- by saying with a smile “Happy Valentine’s Day!” Legend behind Valentine's Day Roses There is an interesting story behind the legend of the Valentine's Day Rose. It is said that once a beautiful maiden by the name of Rodanthe was pursued by a number of impassioned suitors. In their desperate pursuit the lovers broke the doors of Rodanthe's house. This enraged goddess Diana. She turned Ro-

During the freezing cold weather in January, the Homeless Voice's volunteers and staff went out to do Emergency Cold Weather Outreach in Broward County. “We went out to bring in the ones who were still on the streets into one of our shelters,” said Ron Gauthier. “Some of them wanted to remain in their make-shift camp sites... and for those individuals we gave them plenty of blankets, sweat shirts and hot coffee.” To see the story go to www.HomelessVoice.tv

2009 Presidential Outlook Analysis In January 2009, President Obama will have many tasks at the forefront. Terrorism, Health Care, Energy, and Economic issues are some of the top public worries. As he forms his cabinet and gets ready to take the power seat, he must consider what if analysis. As a fellow political science undergraduate major, he should be good at analysis. The question remains are all the problems too many to rectify in one term? It took more than one term for FDR, so does this mean an automatic re-bid for President without any strong opponents on either side? These questions will be answered in the future, but first things are first. I believe that prioritizing is the best way to solve these issues. Also, how will the less fortunate be affected during a new transition period when more people are needy? First, the economy must be addressed because crime is on the rise due to the lack of opportunity. For the past year, armored truck robbery and murder have been a regular occurrence in South Florida. This seems to be a reaction to the poor economic conditions. Therefore, fixing the jobs outlook will help everything else to get solved. For instance, health care is a huge issue, but it can be helped if people have jobs to pay (Continued on page 5)

HOMELESS VOICE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR SEND TO:

Dear Supporters, Happy Valentine’s Day! Remember, you don’t have to spend money to let the special people in your life know how you feel. Some ways to show your love can be done with a homemade card or gift. Or if you’re not the crafty type, you can give up your time. Maybe offer to babysit for a neighbor or relative, cook a meal for someone who doesn’t cook for themselves or give a massage for that really someone special. However you choose to celebrate, Valentine’s Day is one more day we can be thankful for the loved ones in our life! Sara Targett

day.org picked out for your viewing pleasure. The list of romantic movies in Hollywood industry is quite long. These are really heartwarming, touching and extremely romantic ones. Some of the most popular romantic movies are briefed below: Casablanca: It is one of the greatest love stories ever made in the Hollywood industry. The characters were so moving and deeply associated with their roles which created a real life scene in the movie. Breakfast at Tiffany's: A very soft, loving and a light-hearted love story defining the performance of Audrey Hepburn as a call-girl. Love Story: It is a simple yet unforgettable movie. There are those who give the fruits of his labor to the lazy are truly thankful, realizing the owed thieves instead of choosing the truly suffering and striving? Money does not change men; it reveals them-- on both ends. It either makes you more generous or it makes you greedier or it makes you steal. Money (or the lack thereof) is the root of all evil. It wasn’t written only for those who have an abundance who are hoarding their gifts given by God, who watch unaffected the suffering of a hungry man not even offering a mere crumb from their lavish tables; it was also written for the slothful thieves who steal for the lack of it instead of actually working for it! Both are considered

to be thieves stealing from God, by God. The Bible says to help Christians first. I take that to mean those who adhere to the commandment, “Thou shall not steal.” There wasn’t a clause in there as to what kind of stealing is acceptable (the need or the greed) for all thieveries are an abomination! Being able to work and not doing so is stealing. If they only knew-- that they are also robbing themselves of eternity in heaven and pawning it for hell! Let’s not omit the other real and valid truth-- that if only some of the rich knew that being uncharitable, self-righteous and elitist will end in a similar fate, then the here and now along with the hereafter would be a much nicer place to be. In the end, God Himself will judge sloth and greed for He is not mocked. Those on either end of the spectrum may think their crimes are not known but He knows them. Woe to them who are weighed in the balance and are found wanting! Whether it’s white or blue-collar crime matters little. There is never any circumstance on Wall Street or Main Street in which either will ever be condoned. And it is because of thieves on both sides of the street that the middle class is quickly disappearing into the great divide we see on the news daily. I don’t know which side of the tracks the thief on the cross next to Jesus was from but would he have been forgiven had he continued to steal knowing it was wrong? The following bible verse immediately came to my mind that night, “Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” Revelation 3:17 Revelation 3:18 then goes on to say (may it be of comfort to your homeless),” I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see”. The homeless have been tried by fire; this life is but a few days and a moment compared to eternity and I pray their sight goes beyond present circumstances. Faint not! he Cononie Family Foundation, The Cosac Shelter and the Homeless Voice will be starting a day program for people who have an aspiration to become an artist using paints. It will be every two weeks at the 1203 North Federal Highway shelter, space is limited. The service is free to anyone who is disabled and if their SSI or SSDI check is under $1,000.00. Lunch will be provided free of charge. At this time we are taking supplies for donations. All supplies will be free for all participants. The $150 fee for supplies will be paid for by the aforementioned three foundations if donations are short. This is an attempt to have the people in the classes get their mind off of their problems and to use art as therapy. If you are interested in sending your clients please send us an email or have your clients send an email. They may call 954-925-6466 if they do not have access to the Internet. We will need to see proof of funds for those who want the supplies for free. For those who have income over $1000.00 per month it will be a sliding scale based on donations from the public and/ or they may get another agency to pay the fee of $150.00 or buy their own supplies from us or any local art store. We are also taking donations of old paintings to recycle the canvases. If the client does have an income of over $1,000 per month we may be able to still fit them in for free if they have proof of other expenses such as large co pays on their medication. If they can bring their own supplies then there is no fee what so ever. Sean decided to go ahead and teach the first art therapy course for now. He took his first stu-

dent Chris, and handed him a canvas and a set of paints. Sean started to paint his Abstract and so did Chris. In about one hour Chris created what Sean thought was a real nice painting. Sean asked Chris how much he wanted for his Masterpiece. Chris replied “$25" Sean then told Chris that was too cheap and offered Chris $50 and Chris gladly accepted the offer. According to Sean, Chris jumped up off the floor and was totally happy with the results of his first painting at the school. Sean on the other hand created his own Abstract titled, “Confused First”. In the future, the shelter will have several Art Auctions where the students can sell their own paintings and keep all the money. The general public can either donate their own work or sell it at the auction and agree to make a donation if their work is bought. Cononie, who already has sold art items in the past will also make special paintings to donate as well as selling some of his own work and making donations off of the sales. Cononie added “not only will the clients receive therapy, make a little money, but they will also learn business skills about cost to produce, what price to sell it for to make a profit, how to set up business books and marketing skills. Call 954-9243571 to sign up for the next class. Written By: Richard Bac

Our problem with President Bush is that very few people trust his judgment anymore. In conclusion, President Obama will begin January with many issues. send in their check for $5.00 to the address below. How can you get others to send in their check for $5.00 as well? Well at work this year instead of exchanging presents ask each worker to make a check payable to The Cosac Homeless Assistance Center and send them in to our address. Together we will pay off these balances. Or, maybe 25,474 people can send in their $10.00 checks. So what can you do to get these 25,474 people to send in their $10.00 checks? We can ask every one we know to help! Another way is for 2,547 people to send in $100.00. Maybe you can do a car wash or a garage sale at your home. The best way to get these balances paid off is to go to your church and ask them to do a one time collection for Winter or even a penny drive. If there were 254 churches who each raised $1,000 we would make our goal. There is just one catch..... if your church members and pastor are going to invest in us than we want them here to see where the money goes. We want you to meet the homeless and the formally homeless individuals who are now working for our shelter system as case workers, security,

kitchen staff and housekeeping. The public has invested in our agency for over 12 years. All our buildings were paid for by you the people who donated to us and who continue to buy our paper. We want you to see what you own. This is your place as well as our place. We just don't give you stock, but you provide to us and stock our shelves with lots and lots of food. Did you know that not only do you put a roof over a homeless persons head but you feed many hungry families who live on their own because they come to our food pantry and get food a few times a month at the Pete Clifford's Food Pantry? You can also call our office at any time and we can run your credit card for any amount you wish. This new thermometer is to show our progress in paying off these homes. -Sean Cononie
