Homeless people die after bird flu vaccine trial Three Polish doctors and six nurses are facing criminal prosecution after a number of homeless people died following medical trials for a vaccine to the H5N1 bird-flu virus.
T
he medical staff, from the northern town of Grudziadz, are being investigated over medical trials on as many as 350 homeless and poor people last year, which prosecutors say involved an untried vaccine to the highly-contagious virus. Authorities claim that the alleged victims received £1-2 to be tested with what they thought was a conventional flu vaccine but, according to investigators, was actually an anti bird-flu drug. The director of a Grudziadz homeless centre, Mieczyslaw Waclawski, told a Polish newspaper that last year, 21 people from his centre died, a figure well above the average of about eight. Although authorities have yet to prove a direct link between the deaths and the activities of the medical staff, Poland’s health minister, Ewa Kopacz, has said that the doctors and nurses involved should not return to their profession. “It is in the interests of all doctors that those who are responsible for this are punished,” the minister added. Investigators are also probing the possibility that the medical staff may have also have deceived the pharmaceutical companies that commissioned the trials. The suspects said that all those involved knew that the trial involved an anti-H5N1 drug and willingly participated.

ear Friends, a lot of time we write stories just on homeless issues and sometimes we write about other issues such as problems that affect individuals and families. It is sort of like educating people about Global Warming. It does not matter how many homeless people we save if the world would eventually be destroyed by global warming therefore it is everyone’s job to prevent and try to fix what we have damaged, and that means it is this homeless agency’s’ responsibility as well to educate as many as we can on how to stop global warming. So what else can this newspaper and multitude of social service agencies do to help mankind? Well, let’s go back a few years when we at the Homeless Voice started to talk about how we needed to be prepared for pandemics such as the Bird Flu that can turn into a pandemic or any other type of flu like the current Swine Flu. I have been actively involved in educating shelters on their pandemic policy across the USA as well as being on the Pandemic Planning task force for our own community. This past month gave many of us a scare especially when we all saw and heard the World Health Organizations leading health expert Dr. Chan. She called for global solidarity, saying, “After all, it really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic.” Yes we got a scare but most importantly it became a test run for all of us who serve the public as well as families 21 people died after being given the anti bird flu vaccine wanting to make sure their families were The news of the investigation will come killing their patients for commissions from going to be safe. Our Homeless Voice readers:
W
e at the Homeless Voice are establishing a new subscriber list in the event of an financial emergency. What is a financial emergency and what does it mean to you and to us? Most of you all know we take the most chronic homeless individuals, We take the ones that have been rejected by our government shelters and the ones who are very hard to handle because of severe mental illness or a person who has severe seizures and just can’t stay settled where they can meet the requirements of a county shelter. Government shelters only give you a certain period of time to get your act together and, well, how can we expect a person to get their act together in a period of time when science and medicine can't always do that. Funded shelters have very strict rules on who they can take, we don't. Most of you also know the reason why we can take the hardest of the hardest cases is because we and you fund our shelter system. This is great, we can buy what we need now not five months later trying to get approval. We can do outreach in the street and find a way to help them right then and there. We can do all of these great things because of you all who donate money to us allowing us to continue to treat the most difficult cases in the community. However there are some down sides as well. We have always saved money for emergencies in case it rained for a month or two straight where we would only sell half the amount of papers per month. We’ve even saved money in case we had two bad hurricanes and the streets were blocked for several weeks where trees and other debris would block the streets from traffic. Now comes the next problem. We also have saved for a month or two for a simple pandemic where I felt it was in the best interest of our vendors and the community not to have our vendors out in the street where they might get sick or pass their own sickness off to an unsuspecting person wanting to donate to us. We could
actually survive for about four months without one cent coming into the shelter. Also we can’t forget in the time of a true pandemic where it is so bad that many other people would also be out of work and may not be able to give to our group. This swine flu I was watching the kill ratio and the amount of people in Florida who were infected so I could start our own procedure of pulling the vendors off the street, A lot of people do not realize money is dirty and we have to count all this money coming into the building. Sure we could be safe counting the money because we would use masks and other equipment to make the money safe but our vendors would be risking their lives to bring in the donations and that is something I did not want them to do if it was a bad pandemic. First we can stop reading this story right now and take a break and thank the good Lord for such a weak virus. So let’s say it together, THANK YOU GOD FOR KEEPING US SAFE. Most of you know that I have been trying to educate as many people as I could with our own paper telling each and every one of you to be prepared and to be prepared for months and in some cases for up to eight months. It is called social disruption and with social disruption food is not always at Publix and jobs are not always available and that also means charities and churches are at risk of going out of business. In fact with so much turmoil charities and churches do not even want to ask for money at the time of a major crisis where thousands will lose their lives. Sure we do it for disasters but doing it for a pandemic is going to be difficult for most of us who depend on your support. It is not right unless we are out there in the field spending thousands on helping others get food and supplies. What I wanted to do was to secure our supporters emails in case there was a major issue such as a pandemic where we could reach out and send an email to each supporter for them to please send in their $2.00 donation each and every month
we are not on the streets. Each and every month we sell between 80,000 to 100,000 papers and if a very bad pandemic hit us and we were not selling our papers we could survive. The government has already instructed businesses to keep money saved for a pandemic so they can continue to serve people and to pay their staff. We have a very detailed plan on how to cut costs and cut our own expenses where we could cut our budget down from the 100,000 a month to about 65,000 a month where we could survive even longer but that is the lowest possible budget we can live on. Please understand we will not use this email system unless it is an extreme emergency, however you may want to send in your one time donation today so we can plan even better. You can send in a one time donation today for $16.00- this would allow us to run for the worst type disaster for a period of up to eight months. If you want to send in your donation today please see the below instructions. Before I go, please even if you do not wish to help us reach these goals or you just can't help us now please remember the need for you and your family to be fully prepared in case there is a pandemic is essential. Please each and every month stock up on supplies and if you are prepared you will not have to panic. Please go to our Pandemic web site at:

The lives of Count Max
I
A Penny I found a penny today Laying on the ground. But it’s not just a penny, This little coin I’ve found. Found pennies come from heaven, That’s what my Grandpa told me. He said Angels toss them down. Oh, how I loved that story. He said when an Angel misses you, They toss a penny down; Sometimes just to cheer you up, To make a smile out of your frown. So don’t pass by that penny When you’re feeling blue. It may be a penny from heaven That an Angel’s tossed to you. -Author Unknown
Puzzling love What is the meaning of eternal love? Is it real or is it an illusion? Is it something heavenly from above? Give your heart to your lover; diffusion? Does love make you content, or does it hurt? Does it make you cry, or make you quiver? Is love visible like a large T-shirt? These questions are making my mind shiver. Love can’t be created from something new.
n a village in Bavaria there died, about 1850, an old man, nearly a hundred years old. No one knew anything certain about his origin, for he had no family. During more than half a century, broken down with infirmities that rendered it impossible for him to earn a livelihood by any kind of labor, he had no other resource than the charity of the public, to which he appealed by creeping about among the manor-houses and farms of the neighborhood, offering almanacs, matches, and other small objects, for sale. The whole countryside had given him the nickname of “Count Max;” the children never addressed him in any other way. Why did people call him by this title? Nobody knew; but it had become a habit with everybody. Possibly, it might have been suggested, in the beginning, by the refinement of his countenance and manners, which offered a marked contrast with the squalor of his rags. Several years after his death, he appeared, in a dream, to the daughter of the owner of one of the castles in which, whenever he called with his wares, the servants used to give him a good supper and a night’s lodging upon clean straw in the stables, for he had no abode of his own. Addressing the lady, he said to her: – “Thanks for having remembered poor Max in your prayers; they have been heard by the Lord. You wish to know whom I am, O charitable soul, who took pity on the wretched merchant! I come to gratify your wish; my history will be an instructive lesson for all who learn it.” Continuing to address the lady, he continued his recital as follows: – “A century and a half ago, I was the rich and powerful lord of this region; I was vain, haughty, and infatuated on the score of my nobility. My enormous wealth was employed only on my pleasures, for which, large as it was, it hardly sufficed; for I was a gambler and a rake, and I spent my time in a succession of orgies. My vassals, whom I regarded as having been created for my use, like so many beasts of burden, were crushed and ground into the dust to pay for my prodigality. I died young, exhausted by every kind of excess, but without having experienced any great misfortunes. On account of my rank, my funeral was very splendid; the high-livers whom I admitted to my intimacy regretted me as a lavishly-hospitable and magnificent host; but not a tear was shed over my tomb, not a prayer was sent up for my soul, and my memory was cursed by all those whose misery had been intensified by my exactions and my crimes. At the death of each of my victims, a new face, threatening or ironical, rose before me and pursued me incessantly, and I was not able to find a corner in which to hide myself from his view! “At length, weary, worn out, exhausted, like the wanderer, who, ha-
rassed and foot-sore, sees no end to the road before him, I cried aloud, “My God, take pity on me! When will this horrible situation come to an end?” Then a friendly voice, the first I had heard since I quitted the Earth, replied, “When you will it.” – “What must I do, great God?” I cried again, “tell me! I am ready to submit to everything!” – “You must repent,” again replied the voice; “you must humble yourself before those whom you have humbled; you must beg them to intercede for you; for the prayer of the injured who forgives is always favorably listened to by the Supreme Judge.” I humbled myself; I sought the forgiveness of my vassals, of my servants, of all my victims, whose faces, gradually losing their expression of anger and becoming more and more benevolent, at length disappeared altogether. No words could express the joy of that moment! I seemed to have begun a new life; hope took the place of despair; and I thank God for that deliverance with all the energy of my soul. The voice afterwards called to me: “Prince!” and I replied, “There is no other Prince here than the Almighty, who abases the proud. Forgive me, O God! For I have sinned; make me the servant of my servants, if such be Thy will!” “Some years afterwards, I was born again upon the Earth; but, this time, in a family of poor villagers. My parents died while I was still a child, and I was left helpless and alone. I got my living as I could, sometimes as a workman, sometimes as a farm-servant, but always honestly, for, this time, I believed in God. At the age of forty, an attack of disease deprived me of the use of my limbs; and I was obliged to beg, for fifty years, on the soil of which I had formerly been the absolute master; receiving with thankfulness a morsel of bread at the door of the farms which formerly belonged to me, and where, by the bitter mockery, they had nicknamed me “The Count,” and only too glad to find shelter, from time to time, in the stables of the castle that had formerly been my abode. In my sleep, I took pleasure in wandering over the stately abode of which I was formerly the haughty master! How many a time, in my dreams, did I see myself once more surrounded by my former splendor! These visions left with me, on waking, an indefinable feeling of bitterness and regret; but no complaint ever escaped my lips, and, when it pleased God to call me back into the spirit-world, I blessed Him for having given me the strength to submit, without murmuring, to the long and painful trial of which I am now receiving the reward. “To you, noble Lady, I thank you for having prayed for me! From the book “Heaven and Hell” by Allan Kardec (1865)Submitted by Luis
Torn Apart Wrong to compare you to a cutting knife? You shine in my eyes like silver on light, But you turn and its like the end of life, Staying or leaving is a constant fight. You treated my heart like it was a stone, Thinking it would have no consequences, And then you left me standing all alone, What will help me fix these mental messes? Even after all the lies you told me, Why is it that I still miss you this much? Trying to let go so desperately, Yet I cant forget how our hands would touch. As long as I can dream and hear you speak, You will fracture my heart and make me weak. -Amanda Pita
My Misery
Shall I explain to thee my misery? Without it the sun would not set at all I have no one to be my company My time spent alone, unsettled is all A dark life I live, in my mess of home No one around not family nor friends But one day I`ll no longer be alone But `till that day my misery won`t end One day my acquaintances will be more And that day cometh to my life with haste Then is when there will be an open door I will be more than just another waste I will take my chance in the art of life One day I will be able to suffice By: Davin A. Love is awakened by your true lover. You’ll think about only her, that you do.
No One Around Is their anybody out there with me? I feel alone lying on the floor.
Long as I’m on the hook,
The tears I cry that no one around see. Secluded from the world forever more. Should I try to fit in or just give up. Everyone around just makes it hard. Emotions overflow my mental cup. I can’t find the strength to let down my guard. The lies they say to fake that I belong. Their so clear and easy for me to find. I wanted to leave and write you a song. But with all these lies just leave me behind. I’m left in this room to lie on the floor.
I will love thee!
I guess I’ll be alone forever more.
So much; that your feet will start to hover. Love is a fish’ in rod and you hook’d me.

uess what Mom and Dad? I won the Power Ball Lottery and it is over 180 Million Dollars. It sounds like a wonderful dream and in most cases it is a dream except for those few lucky people that might have gotten those numbers leading them in to a life of either destruction, stability, or having a giving heart. There are many stories out there about how lottery winners usually die poor in some type of horrible death. If this is true how can a person who wins the lottery do things to make their life better? Should they give away most of it? Should they take care of their family members and friends, then set up their future and then start to give to all those great causes to make the world a better place? Should they start their own agency? I often sit and wonder what would I do? What would Sean Cononie do if he won the power ball worth 200 million dollars? In most cases my mind is so busy trying to figure out what to do and in some cases I get lost in a world of believing that I won and now things are going to be different for our agency and for the causes I want to help each and every day. Those of you who actually know me know that I work 7 days a week almost 18 to 20 hours a day. So now I sit here and wonder how many hours would I actually work if this came true and would I take my job more serious and make myself work more hours or what about less hours? To tell you the truth I think I would work the same amount of hours but I would make those hours more functional and finally get rid of the filing system to the left side
Summer Safety
S
chool is out and many people are headed to the beach for rest, relaxation, and recreation. Nothing can ruin these fun filled days like being unprepared though. Read these following suggestions from the American Academy of Pediatriacs to keep you and your loved ones safe this summer. Babies under 6 months: -The two main recommendations from the AAP to prevent sunburn are to avoid sun exposure, and dress infants in lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. However when adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents can apply a minimal amount of sunscreen with at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor) to small areas, such as the infant’s face and the back of the hands. If an infant gets sunburn, apply cold compresses to the affected area. For Young Children: -Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside, and use sunscreen even on cloudy days. The SPF should be at least 15 and protect against UVA and UVB rays. For Older Children: -The first, and best, line of defense against the sun is covering up. Wear a hat with a three-inch brim or a bill facing forward, sunglasses (look for sunglasses that block 99-100% of ultraviolet rays), and cotton clothing with a tight weave. -Stay in the shade whenever possible, and limit sun exposure during the peak intensity hours - between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. -Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater. Be sure to apply enough sunscreen - about one ounce per sitting for a young adult. -Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. -Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand as they reflect UV rays and may result in sunburn more quickly.
of my desk chair on the floor. I can’t tell you how many times my mail gets stepped on throughout the day as it adds up daily because I have no time to sort and read my mail. You know I really want to win the lottery so I can do whatever I want to do as far as helping as many people as I can. I wonder if I will be the one who just feeds the people or will I be the one who figures out a way for the poor to have food so it ends starvation? Putting a band aide over a problem is not the way to go but putting a “permaide,” (Oh no I just created another word) over a situation therefore fixing it for many years to come is the best plan. So if one day I win the lottery I want you all to send me emails telling me to slow down and remember to permanently fix the problems and not just fix it for today. I must tell myself to not just buy a few tons of rice but rather come up with a plan that the poor of the world will be able to grow millions of tons of rice where we can finally come up with a cure to end starvation forever. One last thought..... Every day in the world over 30,000 people, mostly children die of starvation or from the lack of medication. Did you know it took you about four minutes to read this story and if we used the “starvation clock”; which means that for the time it took you to read this story 84 people just died. Did you hear me? This means that 84 little ones just died because they could not get the leftover food I threw out after one complete day of eating. -Sean Cononie
HEAT STRESS IN EXERCISING CHILDREN -The intensity of activities that last 15 minutes or more should be reduced whenever high heat and humidity reach critical levels. -At the beginning of a strenuous exercise program or after traveling to a warmer climate, the intensity and duration of exercise should be limited initially and then gradually increased during a period of 10 to 14 days to accomplish acclimatization to the heat. -Before prolonged physical activity, the child should be well-hydrated. During the activity, periodic drinking should be enforced, for example, each 20 minutes, 5 oz of cold tap water or a flavored sports drink for a child weighing 90 lbs, and 9 oz for an adolescent weighing 130 lbs, even if the child does not feel thirsty. -Clothing should be light-colored and lightweight and limited to one layer of absorbent material to facilitate evaporation of sweat. Sweat-saturated shirts should be replaced by dry clothing. -Practices and games played in the heat should be shortened and more frequent water/hydration breaks should be instituted. POOL SAFETY Source: http://www.aap.org/family/tipppool.htm -Install a fence at least four-feet high around all four sides of the pool. The fence should not have openings or protrusions that a young child could use to get over, under, or through. -Make sure pool gates open out from the pool, and self-close and self-latch at a height children can’t reach. -Never leave children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment. -Keep rescue equipment (a shepherd’s hook - a long pole with a hook on the end and life preserver) and a portable telephone
Random Acts of Violence
y muse is clothed in sackcloth and ashes. Within a month’s time between March and April, the following random acts of violence were the starlit headlines in the US alone, such as the world has never seen. Matthew 24:8, warns there will be a marked increase of activity: Pastor Fred Winters was killed at church in Illinois. Four California police officers and one suspect were shot and killed. In Massachusetts a man stabbed one sister to death, attacked another, and finally decapitated his 5-year-old sister in front of a police officer when he broke down the door. Another gunman opened fire inside a nursing home North Carolina, killing eight. An engineer at Yahoo gunned down his family in a murder-suicide that killed six people. A Massachusetts woman, believing she was being stalked by a cult, used a pair of scissors to inflict 100 wounds on her 2-yearold. She can be heard saying, “Die! Die!” on a 911 call! A man barricaded the back door of an immigration center in New York with a car and went on a shooting rampage, killing thirteen. Three Pittsburgh officers were shot and killed after a man pulled over for a routine traffic stop opened fire. Five children were found dead inside their Washington state home, killed by their father in a murder-suicide. In addition, The National Coalition for the Homeless reports over the years there has been a surge in the attacks on the homeless: 774 acts of violence, resulting in 217 murders of homeless people and 557 victims of non-lethal violence.
The spirit of the antichrist is egregiously evident. It is as much an act as it is a state of mind with many not giving a familiar second look to the beaten Samaritans. Have our hearts become so hardened that we cannot discern the signs of the times? These random acts of violence have become so commonplace that many no longer mourn them as evil or notice them increasing from two per year into dozens per month. Now I know how David felt in Psalm 69: 8- 9, “I am like a stranger and a foreigner…my love for your house burns in me like a fire, and when others insult You, they insult me as well.” There are four stages of apostasy (outlined below): looking back, drawing back, turning back and falling back: No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:62) But my righteous ones will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him. (Hebrews 10:38) From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. (John 6:66) So then… they will go and fall backward, be injured and snared and captured. (Isaiah 28:13) Maranatha! Many perceptible antichrists have already come--we are snared, injured, captured and fallen; it is the worlds departure from the Living God inclusive of thoughts and deeds. The author is unknown but I loved it and found it fitting. The end is not as far as you can see Already there is apostasy Man cast his lot and gathered the coals To stoke the fire that burns the souls The days are numbered, the hours few So work and pray, and try to do The work that’s given in the light Until that sad time when all is night.

near the pool. Choose a shepherd’s hook and other rescue equipment made of fiberglass or other materials that do not conduct electricity. -Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as “floaties.” They are not a substitute for approved life vests and can give children a false sense of security. -Children may not be developmentally ready for swim lessons until after their fourth birthday. Swim programs for children under 4 should not be seen as a way to decrease the risk of drowning. -Whenever infants or toddlers are in or around water, an adult should be within arm’s length, providing “touch supervision.” BUG SAFETY -Don’t use scented soaps, perfumes or hair sprays on your child. -Avoid areas where insects nest or congregate, such as stagnant pools of water, uncovered foods and gardens where flowers are in bloom. -Avoid dressing your child in clothing with bright colors or flowery prints. -To remove a visible stinger from skin, gently scrape it off horizontally with a credit card or your fingernail.
-Combination sunscreen/insect repellent products should be avoided because sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, but the insect repellent should not be reapplied. -Insect repellents containing DEET are most effective against ticks, which can transmit Lyme Disease, and mosquitoes, which can transmit West Nile Virus and other viruses. -The current CDC and AAP recommendation for children over 2 months of age is to use 30 percent DEET. DEET should not be used on children under 2 months of age. -The concentration of DEET in products may range from less than 10 percent to over 30 percent. Ten percent DEET only protects for about 30 minutes – inadequate for most outings. -The concentration of DEET varies significantly from product to product, so read the label of any product you purchase. Children should wash off repellents when back indoors. PLAYGROUND SAFETY -The playground should have safety-tested mats or loose-fill materials (shredded rubber, sand, wood chips, or bark) maintained to a depth of at least 9 inches. (continued on pg. 10)

A New Influenza Virus
NYC Assistant Principal Dies of Swine Flu
N
ovel influenza A (H1N1) is a new flu virus of swine origin that was first detected in April, 2009. The virus is infecting people and is spreading from person-to-person, sparking a growing outbreak of illness in the United States. An increasing number of cases are being reported internationally as well. It’s thought that novel influenza A (H1N1) flu spreads in the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread; mainly through the coughs and sneezes of people who are sick with the virus. It’s uncertain at this time how severe this novel H1N1 outbreak will be in terms of illness and death compared with other influenza viruses. Because this is a new virus, most people will not have immunity to it, and illness may be more severe and widespread as a result. In addition, currently there is no vaccine to protect against this novel H1N1 virus. CDC anticipates that there will be more cases, more hospitalizations and more deaths associated with this new virus in the coming days and weeks. Novel influenza A (H1N1) activity is now being detected through CDC’s routine influenza surveillance systems and reported weekly in FluView. CDC tracks U.S. influenza activity through multiple systems across five categories. The fact that novel H1N1 activity is now detected through seasonal surveillance systems is an indication that there are higher levels of influenza-like illness in the United States than is normal for this time of year. About half of all influenza viruses being detected are novel H1N1 viruses. Summary of Situation CDC Response CDC continues to take aggressive action to respond to the outbreak. CDC’s response goals are to reduce the spread and severity of illness, and to provide information to help health care providers, public health officials and the public address the challenges posed by this new public health threat. CDC is issuing updated interim guidance daily in response to the rapidly evolving situation. Clinician Guidance CDC has issued interim guidance for clinicians on identifying and caring for patients with novel H1N1, in addition to providing interim guidance on

the use of antiviral drugs. Influenza antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) with activity against influenza viruses, including novel influenza H1N1 viruses. The priority use for influenza antiviral drugs during this outbreak is to treat severe influenza illness, including people who are hospitalized or sick people who are considered at high risk of serious influenza-related complications. Public Guidance In addition, CDC has provided guidance for the public on what to do if they become sick with flu-like symptoms, including infection with novel H1N1. CDC also has issued instructions on taking care of a sick person at home. Novel H1N1 infection has been reported to cause a wide range of symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. In addition, a significant number of people also have reported nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Everyone should take everyday preventive actions to stop the spread of germs, including frequent hand washing and people who are sick should stay home and avoid contact with others in order to limit further spread of the disease. Testing CDC has developed a PCR diagnostic test kit to detect this novel H1N1 virus and has now distributed test kits to all states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The test kits are being shipped internationally as well. This will allow states and other countries to test for this new virus. This increase in testing will likely result in an increase in the number of confirmed cases of illness reported. This, combined with ongoing monitoring through Flu View should provide a fuller picture of the burden of disease in the United States over time.

Our Pandemic Plan we do all this education and is there truly a reason to be concerned? Without a doubt, I feel so strong about this, I would say that the most important issue we at the Voice would want you all to remember from all our issues we ever printed is the fact that pandemics are real and there is a great amount of death that can occur. So if I want you all to remember this topic there is another topic I can give you that is just as important and that is, really there is little need to panic if you are prepared. This is so important and you must be prepared no matter what and if you are prepared you will be better off than not being prepared. In fact if you are not prepared you can set yourself and your family up for tragedy if a pandemic comes our way. How do we stay prepared and what things can we do to make sure we are safe? You must also be able to treat yourself if medical services are over stressed by the large surge of sick people and the hospitals are filled. If it is a bad pandemic the hospitals will be a mess. During a pandemic you must understand some facts. During the normal flu season each and every year we lose about 35,000 people because mostly they have some other type of underlying medical issue such as HIV or other immune issues or other breathing issues, such as COPD or even old age. What we all forget is that during flu season many also die because they think they will be fine over time and do not get treatment. Let’s take the elderly for example, they may get sick and then they feel they will be OK over time but then they get weaker and weaker and then their temperature gets higher due to do losing fluids and they become confused and do not hydrate themselves and by that time they either just die alone or if they do seek help it may be too late. I know some of you may now be saying, “Sean, why the hype? Why are you writing about this, this was just a little flu in fact it was less than the normal flu we get each year?” Let me answer that, yes it was just a little
(continued from pg. 1)
flu but all the potentials were there for a global disaster with the loss of life getting into the millions. The only thing that went well was the fact that this was a very weak flu strain and the death ratio was very, very minimal. So to that I can say with great thanks, “Thank You Lord” and I hope many of you are saying the same praise when you do your daily prayers. Let’s get into why we should be prepared and can we expect the government to save us at the time of a full and bad pandemic with a high death rate? Uncle Sam will not be able to do much at the time of a bad pandemic for several reasons but one major reason is that there is going to be a time when a bad pandemic hits us all and Uncle Sam will say, “Tag them and make them comfortable until they die.” Well let’s hope there are enough drugs to make the ones who are tagged or marked for death comfortable with pain meds. During a bad pandemic the government will eventually have the attitude there is really nothing they can do but to let it run its’ course and try to limit death and impact as much as possible. Why would the government say such a thing? In the president’s own report, it stressed this next statement (that any local community that thinks the Federal Calvary is going to rescue them at the time of a pandemic that, that same community would be set for pure tragedy.) It went on further to say that the state and local government had to be prepared and then it went even further and said there needed to be individual and family plans all saying that the federal government would not be able to do it all. So if the federal government can’t do it all, how can we expect the state and the local cities to do it all? We can’t and this is why you must be prepared. All Individuals, families, business sectors and not for profits such as churches have to have their own plans. This is not Sean Cononie saying this; this is the President of the United States of America who made it clear in his pandemic reports and policy.
So let’s get into the real reason why I am writing this story. The first fact that scared me was the number of deaths that took place in the Flu Pandemic of 1918, in case you do not know; let me explain it like this. Somewhere between 50 to 100 million deaths world wide in just about eight months. Rumor has it, they never could get accurate counts because they were trying to get rid of the bodies fast and counts were not that accurate. Then I looked at the normal flu season and how many deaths occur each and every year in the USA. Then I saw that we only had 90,000 ventilators in the whole USA which are used to assist people breathing when they are about to die from the flu or when they are in a coma or other health issues. During normal flu season about 85 percent of those ventilators are used on the people who are sick. I had one used when I had Bacterial Meningitis a few years back and was in a coma. Even with the bad numbers I still got a little relaxed and said to myself, well medicine is better now, more doctors, more science and more hospitals and of course there is always TamiFlu, so what’s that reason to panic? I then started to look deeper to either dismiss the theory we were not prepared or to do more. As I once again opened up the president’s pandemic plan for the flu or other pandemics I saw this statement again, in black and white in his own report I saw these words, (that any local community that thinks the Federal Calvary is going to rescue them at the time of a pandemic that, that same community would be set for pure tragedy,) and that my friends scared me to no end. (By the way you will see this mentioned again because it is important.) Some professionals and just the normal person thinks that TamiFlu is the one thing that is going to save us at the time of a real bad pandemic where the death ratio is high. When I say a real bad pandemic I am talking about like the Spanish Flu where 50 to 100 million people died in less than a year due to the flu. Well let me say it like this, there is a reason
we have all this TamiFlu stockpiled in the USA, it is because of the possibilities of the current Bird Flu becoming a horrible pandemic not just the Swine Flu that came our way last month but also any other pandemic that may come out in the future. The Bird Flu that has a very high kill ratio is a major reason why TamiFlu is stockpiled here in the USA and in other parts of the world. Can we expect to be safe? The current Bird Flu is not one that is at this time easily transferred from one person to the next but if that does happen we can expect a very bad pandemic. Can this current Swine Flu mutate and can it come back during normal flu season, the answer is yes. Do we need to take great concern now before the flu season comes our way? I say, yes we do, but even if we have to be concerned that does not mean you have to panic. Remember our main goal is to limit the loss of life. So can we expect TamiFlu to work? Sure we can, but on the other hand it may not work at all. We know that with this current Swine Flu TamiFlu worked but let’s look at our normal flu this flu season and just how well TamiFlu did not work. According to Loyola University Medical Center, “It makes me nervous,” said Michael Koller, a doctor of internal medicine at Loyola University Medical Center. “We know that it keeps mutating and that is why it is still around. It manages to figure out ways to outsmart us and our medications.” In a March 2009 article written by Trine Tsouderos of the Chicago Times, an important antiviral drug no longer works against this season’s most prevalent type of flu, which has mutated into a resistant strain, researchers reported today in the Journal of the American Medical Association. So TamiFlu worked in the beginning of the regular flu season but then as the season got older TamiFlu did not work as well. TamiFlu has given us high hopes and it does work well but there is no guarantee it will work on every single flu outbreak. (continued on pg. 8)
EW YORK (May 18) - A school assistant principal became the city’s first death linked to swine flu, and the number of cases in Japan surged to more than 120, prompting over 4,000 government-ordered school closures and cancellations of public events. Mitchell Wiener, 55, died Sunday evening, Flushing Hospital Medical Center spokesman Andrew Rubin said. He had been sick with the virus for nearly a week before the Queens intermediate school where he worked was closed on Thursday. In Japan, at least 121 people — most of them teenagers — have tested positive for the virus, health officials in the hardest hit areas said Monday. All were recovering in local hospitals or their homes. Chile also confirmed its first two swine flu cases Sunday in two women who arrived on a flight from the Dominican Republic. The women, ages 25 and 32, are hospitalized and in good condition, Health Minister Alvaro Erazo said. The swine flu epidemic is already expected to dominate the World Health Organization’s five-day annual meeting, which begins Monday, May 18, 2009 in Geneva and involves health officials from the agency’s 193 member states. Officials will examine transmission rates and hear experts’ recommendations on producing a swine flu vaccine. As of Sunday, the virus has sickened at least 8,480 people in 40 countries, killing 75 of them, mostly in Mexico. Complications besides the virus likely played a part in the death of Weiner, who had been hospitalized and on a ventilator, Rubin said. It was the sixth swine-flu related death in the U.S.; officials have also reported three in Texas, one in Washington state and one in Arizona. Wiener had taught in New York City for decades, starting as a substitute teacher in 1978. Since 2007, he had been an assistant principal at I.S. 238, also known as the Susan B. Anthony Intermediate School, in the Hollis neighborhood. Most people sickened from the swine flu, or H1N1 virus, have complained of mild, seasonal flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and fatigue. The city’s first swine flu outbreak occurred three weeks ago, when about 700 students and 300 other people associated with a Catholic high school in Queens began falling ill following the return of several students from vacations in Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak. The school was closed. City health officials announced Sunday that four Queens public schools and one Catholic school would close for up to five school days. Three of the public schools are in the same building in Flushing. Each school had students with flu-like illness last week. The latest school closings will affect nearly 3,000 students and bring the total number of closures to 11. Frieden was named Friday by President Barack Obama to head the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he will be faced with some immediate decisions on how to deal with the nation’s outbreak, including whether to produce a vaccine. He’ll begin at the CDC in June. The school where the virus was first reported in the city, St. Francis Prepa-
ratory, has been cleaned and reopened, and many New Yorkers had assumed before the latest flurry of school closings that the danger of swine flu was subsiding. But Dr. Scott Harper, a health department epidemiologist, said health officials weren’t surprised by the continued presence of the virus. “It’s so unpredictable,” Harper said. As of the weekend, there were 178 confirmed swine flu cases in New York City, Harper said, but the number of actual cases is believed to be much higher. Health officials urged people with underlying health conditions to see their doctors if they believe they may have been exposed to swine flu. That includes people with diabetes, people whose immune systems are compromised because of certain cancer medications, pregnant women, elderly people and infants. Associated Press writers Cristian Salazar in New York and Mari Yamaguchi in Tokyo contributed to this report.

Our Pandemic Plan (continued from pg. 7)
Has our government done everything to treat ourselves if you can’t find medical possible to help limit the amount of death services. The best thing about the two prong from a possible pandemic and the answer approach is that it will limit the amount of is no, I will say it again the answer is no exposure, therefore limiting the amount of for several reasons. Does money play an sickness, therefore limiting the amount of important part of why we are not doing death and most of all limiting the amount of more, the answer is Yes, panic that causes confusion and disturbances We do know that preparing for a that sometimes increases the chance for pandemic is very expensive after all medicine exposure, therefore increasing the amount has an expiration date on it and TamiFlu is of sickness, therefore increasing the amount only good for about two years so this means of death. In short, the more panic we have the government has to spend hundreds of the more we get confused and the more millions of dollars if not billions every few confused we get the chances of making years. How can I say all this, well let’s mistakes and bad judgment comes in to play look at two experts. First we have Doctor which means we just won’t think well. Irwin Redlener from Columbia University Here is what we have to understand, if School of Public Health and their newest hospitals are filled and they only want you division the New Policy Center on Disaster if you are severely sick how will you treat Preparedness he feels that the hospitals will yourself or your loved ones at home? Well not be able to handle a bad pandemic and we treat the flu all the time by ourselves and he reminded us that there are shortages most of us are experts at doing so especially now and this is not severe at all. Then we mom and dad. So it will now become the have Rear Adm. Craig Vanderwagen who time we play doctor. We have already had stated “it is not cost effective to keep all our former training on how to treat the flu these empty buildings around for a possible so we are one step ahead of the game and of pandemic.” course there will be all kinds of education Yes it is not cost effective to keep empty and public service announcements on TV hospitals around for a possible pandemic on how to treat this type of flu. First thing but frankly who cares, I don’t care if it saves that we must learn is when to go get our lives and how do we ever put a price tag on TamiFlu and when to take it. That will be human life? We have many empty buildings established by the Public Health Official in in the USA for our elected officials to run and charge of this incident. In fact they may hide for them and their families at the time even tell us not to take TamiFlu or they may of civil unrest, war, or yes even a pandemic. not even pass it out if it is not working. It is So why don’t the people who put them in very important to do exactly what they say office have any level of protection like our when dealing with TamiFlu. trusty elected officials? I’m not going to You will have to have supplies to treat blame the politicians because I have been yourselves as well as having supplies to to too many pandemic meetings and some treat sick members of your family and to of the doctors and officials say there is just treat them safely. If you are sick and the nothing you can do when it comes to a hospitals are filled what does one do, they pandemic. will have to treat themselves as well as During a bad pandemic we can expect treating their family members. You must about 30 percent of the work force to be out also understand supplies may not be on from work due to being sick, or taking care the shelves of CVS and other drug stores of their loved ones at home, or some will because everyone will want to buy them die. During a pandemic the people who whether they are sick or not. So stocking treat us and protect us also will be in that 30 up now in your pandemic kit gives you all percent category. Now lets look just how that is needed to treat the flu. long you sit in an Emergency room during We also have to understand that if the non pandemic times death ratio is high and now tell me this means that some with 30 percent of die no matter Flu Pandemic of 1918 claimed will the medical staff out what and some that more than 50 million lives sick, just how will are not slated to die the hospitals handle will end up dying a bad pandemic and if we do not have will the increase the supplies to treat surge with so many sick people be able to them. So in a nut shell ones who were be met by our current hospitals system? No going to be ok and not die just may end way will it handle all that is needed. Sure up dead because they won’t be able to get the government will set up mini service the things needed to treat the flu. However centers where vaccines ( If we have one at on the other hand not everyone gets sick that time) and medicine can be handed out at the same time and we may have lots of but if we are that sick and many people need supplies but getting access to the supplies to be admitted there is just no way we can may be difficult and this is where sharing expect the hospitals to do their job correctly. comes into play. It takes a factory worker Let me throw in the picture civil unrest, to make the product, then it takes one to put people panicking, and shortage of food and it in the trucks, then there is a driver to drive over the counter medicine that you would the product to the local store or clinics, normally treat yourself with during the flu and then it takes a person to either sell it to season and picture the long lines. What you or hand it to you at one of these mini about police protecting us and handling the treating facilities that may be set up by the civil unrest in the emergency rooms or the government. Now let’s put that 30 percent unrest in the community when there are absenteeism figure in to the pot and we then hardly any normal services taking place have to ask ourselves will we be able to get because of the shortage of manpower due to access to it? Let me break it down like this, absenteeism in the work place? What about Examples are as follows: the need for your grandmother to be picked (Patient A) gets sick and nothing is up by an ambulance? Oh wait how many working therefore he or she will eventually EMS crews will be sick and how long will die no matter what the medical people can it take to get an ambulance? Every service do. Maybe they would live if they had a will be affected and getting treated or having ventilator but we are so severely short on the items needed to treat yourself may not those I doubt one will be available when be available at the time in your community. one is needed for each and every patient. When dealing with a pandemic we Getting access to one will be like winning must mind set ourselves into a “two prong the lottery. This is the time that some will approach” into first being prepared and be tagged to die. secondly not get sick. If we are prepared (Patient B) gets sick and recovers well it limits the chances of getting sick or if we without any major treatment and no need for do get sick we will have the items needed a hospital stay. Some people may be able to
handle the new strain quite well where as others won’t be able to. (Patient C) get sick and there is no room in the hospitals for them but if they are treated like a normal flu patient at home they may survive. This is when having your supplies comes in to play. This is where if you do nothing they will die but if you keep their fever down, replace their fluids, use breathing treatment’s and any other home treatment may make a difference. Another aspect that can make a difference is that maybe your current hospital is full on Wednesday but there may be a break where there is space on Saturday therefore keeping your loved one alive by home treating them for a few days may make a difference. What happens if TamiFlu can help but it won’t be a few days until it arrives in your community? These are the kinds of situations that the government does not take in to account because it can only save a few lives but to me and you it matters a great deal because it may be the life of our child we keep alive for a few days until help arrives. The best way of surviving a pandemic is not to get sick in the first place. We also have to remember that since you may be treating a loved one at home who gets sick that you must also be able to do this but to do it safely. So you have to have in your home a “sick room” for the sick to go if they are sick and you must keep your children away from the sick adults or keep your other children away from each other if one is sick. You must have the supplies needed to stay safe. Items such as bleach, Lysol, hand cleaner, N-95 mask, gloves and other types of supplies. You should also make contact with your neighbors, friends and relatives and make plans to care for each other’s children if both parents die. Keeping in contact with them daily for status reports this way if both parents die the other party will know it is time to pick up your children and care for them and also in case they get sick an adult can care for them. Prearrange this with your friends and family to stay in contact with each other in case both parents die and also to share supplies so those who need certain things can get access to them if needed. So staying safe and washing your hands all day long and coughing correctly at home and the work place is the best way to stop the spread and to stay safe from germs. How else do we stay safe at the time of a pandemic? Let’s look at the way the school officials and the government responded during this Swine Flu with the closing of the schools. I am hoping that they knew in the very beginning that this was a weak virus and the death ratio was not going to be bad because I feel no matter what that the way they responded was not correct. Yes it did work well with this current situation but if they did not know it was weak and the kill ratio was going to be low then they responded completely wrong. They said over and over it was too late to contain it and the need for closing off the borders or closing all schools was not essential at this time. They said if there was a student or a few sick students in a school then it was time to close the school. Well that worked ok during this possible almost pandemic but it makes no sense not to close school at the first sign of a pandemic. Why? Because a person is sick before they know they are sick and they can spread the virus to others. What this means is simple. Let’s say little Bobby Jones in the fifth grade is exposed to the flu
on Monday, his mom and dad don’t know this because he is still not sick. He goes to school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and then on Thursday he is sick and they pull him out of school. The fact they pulled him out of school was good but he still could have exposed other kids on Monday to Wednesday. This is why pandemics spread so fast because we do not do what we should do at the first sign of a possible pandemic and I don’t care if there is over kill when it comes to kids staying safe. The fact that we wait too long to set up social distancing or cancel school or other events like going to church is the reason why pandemics spread so fast. No matter how I looked at it and using mathematics and the government statements on saying it was too late to contain it I disagree that we can’t do anything about limiting the number of people who get infected. It is quite simple if one less person gets it and that one less person can’t spread it then we have improved the numbers. Now let’s look at it another way. If one person goes to church and spreads it to 30 other people and then that 30 people spread it to another 300 people and then that 300 people spread it to another 3000 people then we have increased the numbers, correct? I dare one government leader or medical doctor to prove to me that I am wrong because I am not. I m not saying I am smarter than any of them but one thing I can say for sure is that the people the government have paid to teach me and others over the years have all taught us that math does not lie and math cannot lie. So you figure it out. So we have got to do what we have to do if a pandemic comes our way. We have to help stop the spread all on our own and make sure you pull your kids out of school at the time you feel comfortable doing so. Let’s talk about washing our hands again, this is one of the best things we can do to help stop the spread of any flu. Now the key to washing your hands is to wash them with soap and water all day long and to wash them with soap and water for about 30 seconds. If soap and water are not available use hand sanitizers. Covering your cough and teaching your kids now how to cough and that is to cough in their armpit or sleeve, not in their hands! Wait a minute… take a look at your kids now… just look at the way they cough, most of them cough in their arms already but it is us adults who cough in our hands. Most schools teach their students how to cough. But it is us adults that are the spreaders of most germs because we get lax with our own germs. The pillar of our community, the church, is the one place that will keep faith in our hearts and give us strength in trying times. However in most cases if we are at a full pandemic with a high kill ratio the churches will be closed. Let’s look at why the churches need to respond to all. Suicides rates will be high at the time of a full pandemic and we need to prevent that from happening and this is where the churches should come in to play. Why is suicide so high in these trying times? Let me explain it like this example. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have five kids and Mrs. Johnson dies at the home. By the way, if it is a bad pandemic Mrs. Johnson may be sitting dead in the house for days until she can be picked up because the morgues and the funeral homes will be over loaded and the government will be setting up warehouse’s as temporary morgues but because of the amount of victims it may take several days for a dead person to be picked up. Next three of the Johnson’s kids also die and the fourth child is sick. Will (continued on pg. 9)

Our Pandemic Plan (continued from pg. 8)
Mr. Johnson be able to hold on or will he look to commit suicide for him and the other two children? He may be thinking that he does not want anymore suffering or the depression may be so bad that he feels that they all need to die to be with the other family members who have passed. There will be cases like this in a bad pandemic and complete families will die. This is why it is very important for the churches to be up and running but not to have service where people come to service. Will Mr. Johnson be able to pick up the phone and call his church? If he did reach his church would his minister be able to talk to him or would there be 50 calls on hold? Has your church set up chat rooms for a pandemic where the minister can do the service over the internet or offer taped service and email them out to the church members? There is a high possibility that Mr. Johnson may take his life and the life of his two remaining children therefore it is vitally important to have the churches be ready for pandemics. In today’s times for about $50.00 a minister can get an internet web cam and do his or her services daily over the camera and send them out to all who have preregistered for a time like this. Should your church set up a social networking site where it can be used all year round offering a taped service but in a matter of minutes be set up to handle a pandemic? The answer is yes because it is the churches who will hold this world together if we ever get a bad pandemic. Not only will your church have to offer internet services they will also be helping church members who may need supplies such as food or medicine. Some members of your church may have to babysit the children of healthcare workers, paramedics and police officers. I have had this same discussion with my own brother who works for the Mayo clinic. I told him if we have a pandemic I would recommend he stay in the garage each night when he comes home from his hospital shift just in case he accidently got exposed to the flu and then brought it home to the kids. The churches will have to pay attention to those who live alone or the elderly who need to be checked on daily. Then if someone is sick can someone from the church go and check on them daily and make sure they are taking their medication and receiving fluids. Remember as fevers increase so does confusion and this is one of the reasons some may die simply because they were too confused to treat themselves. Retired nurses who are members of the church can go and treat sick members of their church. We hear the word CERT a lot in our community and a church can also set up their own CERT team from their church members and make the training they receive cover pandemics as well as other disasters. Has your church contacted CERT in their own state and set up a CERT program for your own members? “CERT” means Community Emergency Response Team. Can your church CERT member get to someone on time and give them fluids or if they run out of fever reducers can your church bring the supplies needed to get better? Can your church member drive someone to the hospital if they are too sick to drive themselves and to have the tools needed to stay safe while acting like a makeshift ambulance? This social networking site can be used not only for prayer but for things needed. Maybe the Brown family had lots of supplies and no one from their family got sick now they can read any requests on
the social networking site for people who may need items to treat their sick family members. Maybe there may be 70 people who are treating themselves at home now they can check in daily and give an update of their health on the social network site. Then if all of a sudden some of the sick people are not posting for a day or two then the next plan of action can take place. If this happens a phone call can be made and if there is no answer then maybe someone from the churches CERT team can go by and check on them. This same theory can be used in the inner communities where residents can help each other out by one person sharing food with another or one checking on Mrs. Blacksone who is 80 years old and lives by herself. But in order for it to work it has to be preplanned. I guess the point I am trying to make is this: I know some of you may be saying that this is over board and over kill and you are correct if we look at the current swine flu. But if we have a true pandemic like we had in the past then there are many more things we could be doing to keep us safe or to maybe keep another 100,000 people from getting sick or to save another 300,000 from dying. It is not the government who is going to rescue you, it is yourself and your friends at the time of a real hard core pandemic. We have to remember the reasons why we have pandemics is that, it is a new strain that we have not seen before and people are not immune to it like most past flu seasons and because we have no real immunity to it, it can hit us hard and spread person to person very fast and because we have no real immunity to it, it then may increase the kill ratio. All this can make you panic but I tell you the truth if you are prepared now then you will have less panic. Being prepared now is the key to being able to survive and stay healthy. Yes the government is going to look for vaccines and pass out meds and do what they can but I have to still remember what the presidents report said and I will say it again in case you forget to fully understand what he meant (that any local community that thinks the Federal Calvary is going to rescue them at the time of a pandemic that, that same community would be set for pure tragedy.) The above paragraph was the end to this long story, however after I was done a thought came into my head. I contacted Mark Targett our Editor and Chief. Mark is also the genius behind all the computer systems we have in place. I asked Mark if he could develop a social network where a church can do a church service on video weekly and make it available to all the churches in the USA for free and having it so user friendly. He said yes. I then said Mark can you make that same social network be converted in a matter of minutes at the time of a disaster or global pandemic? He replied, “yes.” A few minutes went by and Mark handed me a piece of paper and on that paper was the start of the world wide social network for churches and its members titled www. churchbook.us. I asked him if it was going to be as easy as “facebook” and he replied yes, and then said, “Sean give me a month and it will be up and running.” So on July 4th your church will be able to sign up for free to this social network for churches. -Sean Cononie

Swine Flu Information What are swine flu symptoms? Symptoms of swine flu are like regular flu symptoms and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Many people with swine flu have had diarrhea and vomiting. Nearly everyone with flu has at least two of these symptoms. Who is at highest risk from H1N1 swine flu? Most U.S. cases of H1N1 swine flu have been in older children and young adults. It’s not clear why, and it’s not clear whether this will change. But certain groups are at particularly high risk of severe disease or bad outcomes if they get the flu: •Pregnant women •Young children, especially those under 12 months of age •The elderly •People with heart disease or risk factors for heart disease •People with HIV infection •People with chronic diseases •People taking immune suppressing drugs, such as cancer chemotherapy or anti-rejection drugs for transplants People in these groups should seek medical care as soon as they get flu symptoms. If I think I have swine flu, what should I do? When should I see my doctor? If you have flu symptoms, stay home, and when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue. Afterward, throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. That will help prevent your flu from spreading. If you’ve got flu symptoms, and you live in or recently visited an area where H1N1 swine flu cases have been identified, CDC officials recommend that you see your doctor. If you have flu symptoms but you haven’t been in a high-risk area, you can still see a doctor -- use your judgment and consider calling first to ask if you need to make an appointment. But there are emergency warning signs. Children should be given urgent medical attention if they: •Have fast breathing or trouble breathing •Have bluish or gray skin color •Are not drinking enough fluids •Are not waking up or not interacting •Are so irritable that the child does not want to be held •Have flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and a worse cough •Have fever with a rash Adults should seek urgent medical attention if they have: •Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath •Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen •Sudden dizziness •Confusion •Severe or persistent vomiting How does swine flu spread? Is it airborne? Infected people can start spreading flu germs up to a day before symptoms start, and for up to seven days after getting sick, according to the CDC. The swine flu virus can become airborne if you cough or sneeze without covering your nose and mouth, sending germs into the air. The U.S. residents infected with swine flu virus had no direct contact with pigs. The CDC says it’s likely that
the infections represent widely separated cycles of human-to-human infections. How is swine flu treated? The new swine flu virus is sensitive to the antiviral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza. The CDC recommends those drugs to prevent or treat swine flu; the drugs are most effective when taken within 48 hours of the start of flu symptoms. But not everyone needs those drugs; many of the first people in the U.S. with lab-confirmed swine flu recovered without treatment. The Department of Homeland Security has released 25% of its stockpile of Tamiflu and Relenza to states. Health officials have asked people not to hoard Tamiflu or Relenza. Is there a vaccine against the new swine flu virus? No. But the CDC and the World Health Organization are already taking the first steps toward making such a vaccine. That’s a lengthy process -- it takes months. I had a flu vaccine this season. Am I protected against swine flu? No. This season’s flu vaccine wasn’t made with the new swine flu virus in mind; no one saw this virus coming ahead of time. How can I prevent swine flu infection? The CDC recommends taking these steps: •Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Or use an alcoholbased hand cleaner. •Avoid close contact with sick people. •Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. That’s not easy to do, so keep those hands clean. •If you feel ill, stay home. How long does the flu virus survive on surfaces? Flu bugs can survive for hours on surfaces. One study showed that flu viruses can live for up to 48 hours on hard, nonporous surfaces such as stainless steel and for up to 12 hours on cloth and tissues. The virus seems to survive only for minutes on your hands -- but that’s plenty of time for you to transfer it to your mouth, nose, or eyes. How serious is the public health threat of a swine flu epidemic? The U.S. government has declared swine flu to be a public health emergency. It remains to be seen how severe swine flu will be in the U.S. and elsewhere, but countries worldwide are monitoring the situation closely and preparing for the possibility of a pandemic. The World Health Organization has not declared swine flu to be a pandemic. The WHO wants to learn more about the virus first and see how severe it is and how deeply it takes root. The H1N1 swine flu outbreak comes at the end of the U.S. flu season. The virus has spread across the nation. Nobody knows whether it will stick around all summer or whether it will get worse when flu season begins again this fall. Scientists are closely watching the Southern Hemisphere to see whether the H1N1 swine flu begins to circulate there. If it does, it will be important to see whether the virus changes over time, and whether it spreads more efficiently in the winter months. WebMD senior writer Daniel J. DeNoon contributed to this report.

Summer Safety (Continued from pg. 5)
The protective surface should be installed at least 6 feet (more for swings and slides) in all directions from the equipment. -Equipment should be carefully maintained. Open “s” hooks or protruding bolt ends can be hazardous. -Swing seats should be made of soft materials such as rubber, plastic or canvas. -Make sure children cannot reach any moving parts that might pinch or trap any body part. -Never attach—or allow children to attach—ropes, jump ropes, leashes, or similar items to play equipment; children can strangle on these. -Make sure metal slides are cool to prevent children's legs from getting burned. -Parents should never purchase a home trampoline or allow children to use home trampolines. -Parents should supervise children on play equipment to make sure they are safe. -Do not push your child to ride a 2-wheeled bike until he or she is ready, at about age 5 or 6. Consider the child's coordination and desire to learn to ride. Stick with coaster (foot) brakes until your child is older and more experienced for hand brakes. -Take your child with you when you shop for the bike, so that he or she can try it out. The value of a properly fitting bike far outweighs the value of surprising your child with a new one. For more information on finding the proper fit, go to http://www. aap.org/family/bicycle.htm#choosing -Buy a bike that is the right size, not one your child has to "grow into." Oversized bikes are especially dangerous. -Your child needs to wear a helmet on every bike ride, no matter how short or how close to home. Many accidents happen in driveways, on sidewalks, and on bike paths, not just on streets. Children learn best by observing you. Whenever you ride, put on your helmet. -When purchasing a helmet, look for a label or sticker that says the helmet meets the CPSC safety standard. -A helmet protects your child from seri-
ous injury, and should always be worn. And remember, wearing a helmet at all times helps children develop the helmet habit. -A helmet should be worn so that it is level on the head, not tipped forwards or backwards. The strap should be securely fastened, and you should not be able to move the helmet in any direction. If needed, the helmet’s sizing pads can help improve the fit. SKATEBOARD, SCOOTER, IN-LINE SKATING AND HEELYS SAFETY Source: http://www.aap.org/advocacy/ archives/marskate.htm -Children should never ride skateboards or scooters in or near traffic. -All skateboarders and scooter-riders should wear a helmet and other protective gear; wrist guards are particularly important. -Communities should continue to develop skateboard parks, which are more likely to be monitored for safety than ramps and jumps constructed by children at home. -While in-line skating or wearing Heelys, be sure to wear appropriate protective equipment and only skate on designated paths or rinks and not on the street.

LAWN MOWER SAFETY Source: http://www.aap.org/family/tipplawn.htm -Try to use a mower with a control that stops the mower from moving forward if the handle is let go. -Children younger than 16 years should not be allowed to use ride-on mowers. Children younger than 12 years should not use walk-behind mowers. -Make sure that sturdy shoes (not sandals or sneakers) are worn while mowing. -Prevent injuries from flying objects, such as stones or toys, by picking up objects from the lawn before mowing begins. -Do not pull the mower backward or mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary, and carefully look for children behind you when you mow in reverse. -Always turn off the mower and wait for the blades to stop completely before removing the grass catcher, unclogging the discharge chute, or crossing gravel paths, roads, or other areas. -Do not allow children to ride as passengers on ride-on mowers.
