Wine Pairing Tips As the season for pumpkins, costume parties, and raking leaves comes to a close, the season of feasting and family draws near. It’s time for long awaited visits from friends and family and the hustle and bustle of holiday planning. To some, Thanksgiving is arguably the greatest and most American of all holidays. Who doesn’t love food and giving thanks? Because turkey day hosts often have enough on their plates without worrying about proper wine pairings, we decided to ask the experts. The owner of The Winery, Dave Deao, offers advice on properly pairing some of the most cherished holiday foods with the perfect wines. The key with pairing food and wine is you don’t want one to overpower the other. A traditional Thanksgiving meal is made up of very rich foods, and the centerpiece of a typical Thanksgiving meal is often the meat. Most people naturally think white wine is the most appropriate pairing for turkey. However, an American red zinfandel actually couples better with this meat which is commonly considered the most traditional American meal. Ham is a little trickier: sweet glazed hams demand a sweeter wine such as a vouvray while saltier hams pair better with a sauvignon blanc. For those who pass over turkey and ham for prime rib, a big fullbodied cabernet pairs nicely. Each dessert demands a different wine pairing, and there are many dessert wines out there which can make it confusing. A late harvest riesling or a sauterne would go well with most pies, including pumpkin and pecan. With a fruit pie, go with a lighter wine like a moscato or a German spatlese, which is a slightly sweet German wine. Finally, sparkling wines are very versatile and actually pair very well with most traditional Thanksgiving desserts. For further advice on pairing wine with your favorite holiday foods or for just stocking up, see Dave at The Winery on 741 North 98th Street (Clocktower Village).
