How to Stay Cozy AND Safe this Season Written by Jeff Funk, Lumbermen’s, Cover image courtesy of Lumbermen’s
Summer slips away, and the nights get cooler. Fireplace owners are looking forward to that beautiful invigorating aroma. There’s an excitement that comes with the first fire of the season. It’s time for drinking hot chocolate with marshmallow and watching football by the fire. Enjoying the warmth with a beloved and friends. If you’ve ever owned a fireplace, you know that it creates a beautiful ambiance to any room. However, owning a fireplace comes with responsibility. Today, a fireplace is designed to be safe and provide years of service. Like any appliance, they require maintenance and proper operation. Generally, it is best to have the fireplace manufacturer’s local representative provide an annual inspection to ensure chimneys or vents are clear of obstructions and it ensure it is functioning properly. Wood burning fireplaces can develop creosote that should be removed as necessary. All items susceptible to combustion should be cleared and safely stored in an alternate location. They should be cleared a minimum of two feet away from the opening. While using a fireplace grate be sure to keep glass doors open and keep fire-screens closed. Also, use tools designed for a fireplace when churning a fire. Using common sense; don’t burn garbage, and do not use gasoline or other liquids to help start a fire. Keep your children and pets away, and never leave a fire unattended. Make sure it is exstinguished with water before retiring for the night or leaving the house. Check to make sure the ashes are cool when cleaning. When storing ash, a non-combustible container with a tight-fitting lid is recommended. Simple enough and easily forgotten, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with fresh batteries can mean the difference between safety and tragedy. Gas fireplaces should be serviced by a special technician trained in appliance operation and maintenance. An annual service will ensure that the ignition mechanism is working properly, and that the fireplace looks its best. These experts clean, adjusting the embers, logs and glass. Many specialty retailers offer installation by factory-trained and/or nationally certified staff. To verify installer certification, contact the National Fireplace Institute (NFI) a @www.nficertified.org. Always read the manufacturer’s instruction manual so you know how to operate it safely, and consult with your local specialty retailer for input and guidance.

Harvest Serves Napa Dining to West Omaha Written by Nicholas Kinney
After graduating with honors from the Culinary Arts Program at Metropolitan Community College, Tricia Sawyer began to piece together the concept of Harvest to share her passions for creating and enjoying food with Omaha diners. With the support of her husband, Tom, their mission was to be a premier “farm-to-fork” restaurant in Omaha by bringing quality ingredients that are locally sourced at an affordable price. Unfortunately the original plans to launch Harvest were disrupted when Tricia was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following her diagnosis Tom and Tricia travelled around the country, spending six months in Napa Valley and enjoying hot air balloon rides while there. Tom and Tricia’s time in Napa Valley served as the primary inspiration for Harvest’s seasonal menu and motto “Good, Clean, Food”. Napa, widely known for its wine, is a culinary mecca for those in the food industry, and the Sawyer’s stay in Napa heavily influenced the food concepts for Harvest. Sadly Tricia passed away in October 2010. In August 2012 Tom opened Harvest to serve as a monument to Tricia’s culinary passions and the time they shared in Napa. Harvest prides itself in being one of West Omaha’s few “farm-to-fork” restaurants, meaning the ingredients used are manipulated as little as possible and supplied by local farmers. This practice not only supports local businesses, but also effectively provides patrons with the “good, clean, food” for which Harvest is known. Working with these local farmers can present certain challenges, but these challenges are embraced by Sawyer. He says, “Growing seasons have been difficult lately. When we plan a menu around local farmer’s supplies and the weather doesn’t cooperate, we’re out of luck. So we have to get creative and adjust our concept based on what’s available.” Sawyer was heavily influenced by the food/wine synergy he experienced during his stay in Napa. When wine is paired correctly with food, it makes both the food and the wine taste better. He says, “The thing about Napa is that you don’t necessarily have to have an expensive wine in order to achieve a really nice pairing. We plan out our menu and try to pair California wines with what we are currently serving. I like to keep the price of a glass of wine around $8, so it doesn’t feel like we are gouging anyone. We have a very good selection of bottled wines from California for the folks that really appreciate it, but you won’t find any ‘Investment Grade Wine’ at Harvest.” Located on the Northwest corner of 168th and Center in the Shoppes of Lakeside, Harvest is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Saturday. Their seasonal food and wine menus can be found at harvestcafeomaha.com.

Never Fear, 3D Dental is Here! Written by Nicholas Kinney
The origins of 3D Dental can be traced to an Omaha native turned Colorado transplant named Sabrina that developed a severe tooth ache during a family visit. Already apprehensive due to an unpleasant dental experience from her youth, Sabrina knew she had found the perfect dentist when she saw an ad that proclaimed, “We Cater to Cowards”. Dr. Dean DeWispelare, her emergency dentist that day, says “I can happily say that I was the one that took the word fear out of the word dental for her. We now have 4 wonderful children and opened up our practice, 3D Dental together, around 9 years ago.” The DeWispelare Family Dr. Dean, Sabrina and the 3D Dental team have made it their mission to eliminate common dental anxiety, and it starts at their front door. The friendly, patient-focused staff has created a very comfortable family environment, including complimentary Keurig Coffee and video games for the kids that will make your family feel like you’re visiting the neighbors instead of the doctor. Dr. Dean insists, “Pain is not a necessary component of modern dentistry. We strive to change the way people feel about dental visits, and if we can make dental visits a pleasurable experience, then we are doing our job!” Beyond their welcoming environment, 3D Dental provides the full spectrum of dental treatment options under one roof. Patients have access to everything from dental implants, cosmetic and sedation dentistry services at the same place where they receive routine dentistry services to achieve the smile they want. 3D Dental also provides orthodontic treatment including ClearCorrect, an alternative to traditional metal braces that is less expensive than Invisalign. 3D Dental offers many convenient payment options and individualized care plans for all your dental needs. There is no longer a need to postpone treatment, especially for those not covered by insurance. If a patient has been reluctant to go to the dentist because of pain sensitivity or anxiety, they have the option of having a certified provider of sedation dentistry. They offer Care Credit (which is zero interest to the patient), in-house financing, cash discounts, senior citizen discounts, 90 days same as cash and always file the insurance paperwork for you. Conveniently located off 178th and Pacific, 3D Dental is open 5 days a week and two Saturday’s a month. They offer flexible appointments and Dr. Dean is available 24 hours a day for emergencies. Please visit 3DDentalOmaha.com for more information on payment plans and the services they offer.
