Jennifer Richard (in Chief) Janet Dahlquist

Jennifer Richard Autumn has always been my favourite season. A cozy sweater and warm socks with a hot cup of tea is all I need when I’m writing on a fall afternoon. I also find it’s the best season to take nice long walks and enjoy the ever changing colors of the leaves! That being said, after fall follows winter; so in the very first issue of Home & Lifestyle Magazine, we talk about how to get ready for that cold weather that follows fall. We will also cover a variety of different topics such professional golfing tips by none other than Lisa Longball, and how to make a home spa. You saw it on the cover; our first issue features Martell Home Builders, a custom home building company. Those who choose this company – who has built just about 400 houses all over New-Brunswick– understand why they are one of the best custom homebuilders in the region. So sit back and relax and hopefully you’ll enjoy this new magazine full of diversity that we have worked hard to get ready for your entertainment.

It is time to get an early start on winterizing your home These 20 suggestions will save you money and make sure you are ready for the coldest months of the year.

Written by: Pauline Milner

1. Check for air leaks around windows. On a windy day, move your damp hand around the edges of your windows. Any drafts will feel cool on your hand. If you detect any air leaks, you should seal the window. You can purchase a window insulation kit that will cover 5 windows for around thirty dollars. 2. You should also use your damp hand to detect drafts under doors. If you have an air leak, a draft stopper is the quickest solution. You can purchase one for anywhere from ten dollars and up, or, you can easily make your own draft stopper. Use anything from around the house that can be made into a tube. A towel or a leg from an old pair of jeans are great choices. Sew the item into a tube and fill it with rice or kitty litter, both will provide good insulation. If there are drafts around the doors, you can buy weather stripping for about four dollars per seventeen feet. Note! Be sure to check your patio doors too!

clockwise. The fan will push the hot air back down into the room. If your ceilings are higher than eight feet, you may want to consider adding ceiling fans at a cost of about seventy five dollars each.

9. Check the insulation in your attic. It should be at least 12 inches thick and no floor joists should be visible. If you need to add insulation, you can expect to pay about ten dollars per bag. Note! In the winter, if the snow melts 5. After using your oven, leave off your roof, you are losing heat the door open while the oven through your attic. Keep adding cools. 11. Install light curtains, or leave uncovered, south facing windows in order to take full advantage of the sunlight hours.

12. Some shrubs and trees need to be protected with burlap. If there is a farmer nearby, you can ask if they have any empty feed sacks you can have. Feed sacks are often made of burlap. Also, if you are near a seafood restaurant, oysters are shipped in burlap bags that they would probably give you for free. 13. Do not clean out the expired flowers from the beds. If left alone for the fall and winter, many of them will re-seed including some annuals. This will lower your flower purchasing budget for the spring. 14. Insure your outside faucet is drained of water and that it is angled downward. If water is left in the pipe to freeze, the pipe will expand and burst. Also, drain your garden hose. 15. Remove any debris from the gutters in your eavestrough. The debris adds weight to the ice and can cause the gutters to crack. 16. Drain the gas from your mower or let it run until it is empty. Do the same with any other of your gas powered outdoor tools. It is not safe to store gasoline in a shed or garage. 17. Move your snow blower and shovels to the front of your shed for easy access. 18. Now is the time to test the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. It is also a good time to review

the fire escape plan with your family. If you have a monitored alarm system, you can perform a full system test to make sure all of the door contacts, panic buttons, etc. are relaying properly back to the monitoring station. 19. Put together a winter survival kit to use in the case of a storm or power outage. Be prepared to leave your home in the case of any emergency and take your winter survival kit with you. Items to include are: flashlights and battery powered lanterns with extra batteries (put the batteries in the flashlight and lantern in backwards to guard against them being turned on accidently), transistor radio, candles, matches, fire extinguisher, non-perishable foods such as canned goods, snacks, peanut butter, juice boxes, five litres of water per person, can opener, paper plates, plastic cutlery (in a power outage you cannot do dishes and you do not want rotting food on plates sitting around), garbage bags, plastic bags (for sanitation purposes, if needed), four day supply of prescription medications, first aid kit, feminine items, cash (bank machines and debit machines will not work in a power outage), copies of important identification for all family members, four day supply of pet food per pet, disposable kitty litter box (if you have a cat), toothbrushes and toothpaste, change of clothing for each family member and a disposable charged cell phone (you will have to check it occasionally to see if it needs to

be charged). Keep these items in duffel bags where you will have easy access to them in an emergency. 20. Assemble a winter storm kit for each vehicle in your home. Items to include are: Flashlight and extra batteries (put the batteries in the flashlight backwards to guard against it being turned on accidently), transistor radio, blankets, first aid kit, bag of kitty litter (for traction), collapsible shovel, windshield scraper and brush, booster cables, emergency flares, help sign, bottled water, a supply of non-perishable food items, box of tissues, plastic bags, hand warmers, extra hats, mittens, and scarves, pair of winter boots, a small amount of cash, extra prescription medications, a back pack that will fit essential items in case you have to leave your vehicle and walk for help and some reading material, in case you are stuck for a long period of time. Note! In the winter months, never allow your vehicle to go below half a tank of gas. If you are stranded, you will be thankful to have ample fuel! If you can execute all of these suggestions, you will be well equipped to face the oncoming winter. Even if you only complete some of the recommendations, you will be able to save on your energy bill and who doesn't like to save money?!

The Throne Room Renovations Written by Jennifer Richard The bathroom is one of the most used rooms in a house (whether we want to admit it or not!), so why not make some renovations to it so its suits all your needs? Here are a few tips on how you can do it yourself. 1. Bathtub: Depending on what kind of bathtub you want, you can either keep the one you have and just work on the walls surrounding it, or you can completely take it out and replace it with a walk-in shower. The only downfall to this: if you only have one bathroom, then you are loosing your tub. Make sure you know what you want and what you need.

be – as long as it covers the hole entirely) and add some fixtures to the mirror.

2. Sink/cabinet: Now a day, you can basically take any old dresser and turn it into a shelf or even a sink cabinet! Instead of buying brand new, try refurnishing one of your old dressers.

There are so many ways to save on renovations, starting by doing it yourself. It might take a little bit longer this way, but you will be sure to get things done at the lowest cost possible.

4. A quick change of the bathtub curtain can make a huge difference, as well as a new color on the wall. Adding a new border around your window can also make your bathroom look a new.

3. Mirror: Do you have one of those medicine cabinets behind your mirror? If so, all you need to do is buy a mirror (whichever shape you want it to

Hosting a Dinner Party Written by: Jennifer Richard Hosting a dinner party can be tricky and stressful: Are all the guests happy, content, or are some of them having the worst time of their lives? With fall rolling in, so comes Thanksgiving. Having all your family over for supper can be a big task to accomplish alone. Here are some tips on how to successfully prepare for a Thanksgiving dinner party without too much stress. Create a playlist Having a playlist prepared in advance can entertain your guests while they wait for everyone to arrive.

Conversations Let everyone mingle amongst themselves and have a few drinks ready. Food Don’t wait until the last minute to decide what you are going to cook. Search for great meals that are suitable for your budget, but keep it simple. Not everyone likes new foods. You can also prepare a few appetizers for the guests while they wait for the main dish. These do not have to be fancy. Trail mix can be a great appetizer, and at a low cost too!

Make room for more You can never be too prepared. Sometimes, guests will bring an extra person, so prepare one or two extra plates for these newcomers. Although there are always unexpected surprises, there are many ways to throw dinner parties. Do your research and be ready to have a good time!

Relaxing in the comfort of your own home Written by Jennifer Richard

Having to deal with day-to-day stressing event like your family, or work, or even money, can be hard on ones mind and body. That’s why spa days are amazing. But let’s face it: spa retreats or centers can be a little bit expensive and some of us just don’t have the time. That’s why we wanted to show you how to create your own spa at home that won’t eat away your money (or having you stop eating all together because you can’t afford it anymore) or use all of your time. If you’re taking the time to read this magazine, then you will have the time to create your own spa and feel better afterwards. Here’s how: 1. Privacy: One of the most important parts of relaxing is being alone, or just have some uninterrupted time. So if you have children, make arrangements that they will be taken care of while you relax away. (If they are in school, this would be a good time to do it.) So, let the phone go to voice mail, and prepare to indulge. 2. Music: Soothing melodies can help you relax even more. Or, if you want to feel like you’re not at home, some nature sounds can be very relaxing. If you live in the city and you hear everything going on outside, then music will come and cancel those stressing noises. 3. Lighting: Turn off the lights and light a few candles. You’ll be surprised at how much of a difference this will make. Scented candles can be even more relaxing for some people. 4. Bath Products: There are many ways for you to create a luxurious bath with a few helpful products. Lavender-scented bubble bath, for example, uses the power of aromatherapy to soothe you. You can also add skin-moisturising oils to your bath to help nourish your skin. 5. Beauty Treatment: While you are relaxing in the bathtub, might as well go all out and make you feel beautiful afterwards. Putting on a conditioning treatment in your hair an a purifying masque on your face can make you feel and look even more beautiful afterward. Try rubbing your dry skin with loofah, it might that a little more time, but will leave you feeling wonderful. 6. After Tub Care: Applying a rich conditioning cream on your body after your bath will leave your skin soft and make you feel more pampered in between spa treatments.

7. Massage: What’s a spa without a massage? Either ask your significant other to give you a nice massage to help you relax those muscles more, or go ahead and hire a professional therapist to come to your house! You saved up on going to the spa center, so why not? So all you need to create your own spa at home is a bathroom, a tub, and some privacy. Try doing this on a regular basis. Some people have a hard time leaving some time for themselves, but it’s important to make sure you pamper yourself once in a while.

HONOURING

our fallen R.C.M.P.

On Wednesday, June 4th 2014, a series of shootings took place in Moncton, New Brunswick. 24-year-old Justin Bourque shot five officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), killing three and severely injuring two. It started around 7: 20 p.m. (Atlantic Daylight Time) when the first report was made of a man dressed in camouflage and heavily armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a crossbow, was walking down a street near Hildegard road. The killer

GMA HOME & LIFESTYLE

ambushed the responding officers with a shootout that left three RCMP officers dead and two others hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. From that moment on, a manhunt was in pursuit. The Northwest area of the city was in complete lockdown while the search for the shooter was in progress. As the hunt continued throughout the night, and in the morning, the entire city of Moncton was just like a ghost town. All businesses, schools, public transits, stores, offices and the government

18

were closed. People were asked to stay inside and lock their doors and pedestrians and motorists were asked to stay away from the lockdown area. Mostly RCMP officers roamed the streets of Moncton, trying to find the killer. Hundreds of RMCP officers from around the country came to Moncton to help in the capture of Justin Bourque.

A CITY IN MOURNING On June 6th, at 12: 10 a.m. (Atlantic Daylight Time), the RCMP arrested the suspect, Justin Bourque, in a resident’s backyard on Mecca Drive. Shortly after being taken into custody, Bourque said his now-famous words ‘’I’m done.’’ After a 28 hour citywide lockdown, Moncton residents were free to roam the streets once again. While the man was unarmed during his arrest, the weapon used to kill the RCMP officers, and a few other weapons, were found at the scene.

Always #MonctonStrong Though the nightmare is over and the healing can begin, the nightmare is just coming to a front for the family, friends, and co-workers of the three officers that we lost. Cst. David Ross, 32, of Victoriaville, Quebec, Cst. Fabrice Georges Gevaudan, 45, of Boulogne-Billancourt, France; and Cst. Douglas James Larche, 40, of Saint John, New Brunswick, were the three RCMP officers that lost their lives during this tragedy. The two surviving officers were identified as Cst. Éric Stéphane J. Dubois and Cst. Marie Darlene Goguen. We don’t always realise how RCMP officers and other emergency response teams actually put their lives at risks every day to protect the citizens. During this event, the hashtags #PrayforMoncton and #Monctonstrong went viral on social media. People around the globe we’re praying that no one else would get hurt during this event and that it would end soon. Although this event was tragic, one good thing did come out of it: The city of Moncton is now more united than ever. Thousands of people came to pay their respect in front of the RCMP station in Moncton. Thousands of flowers and candles we left on the step in front the build-

ing. People chanted and prayed for the families, friends and co-workers of the three fallen. Following the events of June 4th, the RCMP created an e-mail for the public to send in their condolences, and the RCMP Foundation set up a fund to donate money to the families of the fallen and injured officers. A regimental funeral was held on June 10 at the Moncton Coliseum, with close to 3,000 police officers and many other mourners in attendance. The funeral was broadcasted live on news channels. The three neighbouring cities (Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview), organized several viewing points of the funeral, showing the broadcast on a projector for the citizens who could not attend the funeral itself. It is our turn, as a community, to come together to support our officers in their time of need. Gun control Canada’s National Firearms Association released a statement offering their condolences and stating: ‘’Incidents like these demonstrate the validity of the mounting evidence that none of Canada’s firearms control efforts over the past 50 years have had any effect on preventing

violence, or otherwise stopping bad people from carrying out their evil deeds.’’ They also admit that the system has failed again. The National Firearms Association is Canada’s leader in the quest for fair and practical firearm and property rights legislation. While working for practical laws across Canada, the Association provides access to legal assistance for the defense of the rights of Canadians. Incidence such as this one is not to be taken kindly. Nevertheless, hopefully Moncton will not have to deal with a tragedy such as this one ever again. Home & Lifestyle Magazine would like to thank all the emergency response teams around the world who are risking their lives to save others. It takes a special kind of person to put their lives in danger for the sake of another, and we are forever grateful for your services.

Eating Healthy by Alycia Offer

Eating healthy is a lifestyle that can be hard to keep up. Every year, you make the same New Year resolution: giving up on carbs or going to the gym. How is that working out for you? Getting healthy is all about dedication. You have to be motivated to make the changes necessary to in your lifestyle in order to achieve your goal. We want to give you a few tips on how to get started. 1. Shopping list Basic ingredients are the key to successfully achieve your health goal. Stock your kitchen with a variety of healthy foods that you can just throw in a pot together and have a healthy meal. 2. Snacking Most people think that only eating on schedule is best for you. This is false. Eating healthy snacks in between meals will make you eat less during main dishes. 3. Veggies and Fruits It’s super easy to add vegetables and fruits to your diet! Eat fruits for breakfast, and vegetable during meals, or snacks! (see point 2) Now that you have some idea on where to start, the trick is to take it one step at a time. If you put the time and dedication into achieving your goal, you will feel great about yourself, not only because you are now healthier, but because you have successfully accomplished something.

Mike’s Bikes has so much to offer.

One of the biggest bike stores in Canada Mike’s Bike Shop is located in Dieppe, NB. It is one of the largest independently owned bicycle retail stores in Canada. Not only do they sell ‘Best in Class’ brand bikes such as Trek and Giant, but in the last few years they have expanded into a few more categories that are well suited to their clients. They now also specialize in running shoes and winter gear including skis (downhill skis and cross-country skis), snowshoes and winter clothing. Walking into the shop, a typical customer’s reaction is “WOW!” not only because of the overwhelming size and visual appeal of the store, but also for the amazing service they will receive. There is a very vibrant attitude in the store and the products they sell are very exciting! Framing the outside entrance of the store is a very modern canopy with music playing. “It’s the kind of store that puts a smile on a customer’s face; it’s really a fun place to be,” says Rick Snyder (owner and CEO of Mike’s) in an interview with Home & Lifestyle Magazine. Having been in the bike business (believe it or not) since he was 11 years old, Rick always knew this was what he wanted to do. “When I was in grade 6, I was a student at Queen Elizabeth School, and at that time, I used to walk to Bungay’s Bicycle Shop on my lunch hour and after school. They were kind enough to let me empty their garbage, sweep the repair shop, run for coffee and do all the other jobs no one else wanted to do … all for free. So I was very honoured,” he says with a grin. The original founder of Mike’s Bike Shop was Mike Fougere (hence the name), over thirty-three years ago. Mr. Fougere eventually sold the business to someone else, who then sold it to Rick Snyder. With about thirty employees during high season, Mike’s Bike Shop can help out any type of client. Whether you are a bike enthusiast or a family who just loves spending time together outdoors, Mike’s staff is dedicated to helping you find exactly what you need. All of their sales staff receive extensive product training and will always be able to help a customer pick out the perfect bike for them.

Rick Snyder (Mike’s Bike Shop President)

In addition to their beautiful showroom, Mike’s also has a state-of-theart full service repair center. Their service center staff understands what a big issue it is for customers to get their bike to the shop for service and then home again, so Mike’s service advisors and technicians are also highly trained to ensure each customer’s bike is fixed right the first time and done so in a very timely manner. Mike’s Bike Shop was previously located on Champlain Street in Dieppe for the past 15 years. After enjoying many years of success, they simply outgrew this location. In order to provide more space, more services and a top quality shopping experience for customers, Rick made the decision to relocate out of their 3000 square foot store. They are now located off Dieppe Boulevard, at 67 Englehart Street, in a brand new state of the art 16,000 square foot facility, which was custom built to Rick’s specifications. Mike’s Bike Shop is now bigger and better than ever before. Rick explained that Dieppe is a very pro-cycling city. The

GMA HOME & LIFESTYLE

mayor, city councillors and the community at large have all been tremendous supporters of Mike’s Bike Shop, so one of the most important things on Rick’s list when considering moving was to continue to be a proud Dieppe business. One important factor helping Rick to settle on this new location is the future addition of the Greater Moncton multi-use trail, which when completed, will run directly beside the shop. By next summer, this trail will connect the store to the Riverfront Trail, which is our beautifully groomed tri-community cycling and walking trail. Furthermore, this will give customers another place to test ride either a new bike before buying or their current bike before taking it home after having it in for service. At their previous Champlain Street location, there was just too much traffic to get a proper test ride in, so now on Englehart Street, customers can give their bike a test run on the quiet surrounding streets or soon on the peacefully groomed trails.

28

Earlier this Spring, and continuing their deep tradition of giving back, Mike’s once again held their hugely popular “A Bike A Day in May” giveaway that saw them give away 60 brand new shiny bicycles. This was one way for Mike’s to say thank you to the Greater Moncton community for all the wonderful support they’ve received over the years. Mike’s Bike Shop continues to be deeply involved with the community and if you take look around, nearly everything that has to do with cycling, at least in South-East New Brunswick, has Mike’s logo on it! This is their way to support local riders and to give back to everyone who has been so supportive of them. In the past year, Mike’s Bike Shop has been very fortunate to have received recognition both locally and nationally for their excellence in business and their passion for community. In 2013, Mike’s was honoured to have been the recipient of the City of Dieppe’s Business Excellence Award and last fall, Mike’s won the Cana-

da-wide Canadian Cyclist Bike Shop of the Year Award.

So why should you choose Mike’s Bike Shop? Well, for three big reasons which are best summed up by quoting Rick’s television commercial: “Mike’s Bike Shop … where you’ll find the best service, the best selection, and the best industry leading brands. I guarantee it!”

The Mike’s Bike Shop Staff, always helpful and professional

Be sure to visit Mike’s Bike Shop at 67 Englehart Street in Dieppe, check them out online at www.mikesbikeshop.ca, ‘Like’ them on Facebook for exclusive specials and contests or give them a call at 506 852 7100. They look forward to seeing you soon.

Building your Dream Home

Your dream home. Whether it is the entire home or just the incredible man cave or gourmet kitchen, it is there, in the back of your mind, conjured up in every detail, waiting for the windfall that will make it a reality. Young couples in love spend hours designing their future home. They even add the finishing details like the oak tree in the back yard and the white picket fence in the front. If you are ready to turn your dream into a reality, Martell Home Builders (MHB) is there to help you every step of the way. They thrive on what your dreams are made of. Martell Home Builders is a residential home building company founded in 2007. Every home they construct is fully custom designed.

When approached by a client unfamiliar with building, MHB will sit down and go through what’s called their ‘discovery session’ where they will go over every pertinent aspect of the process. They will design the plan, price it out, find the lot; They will even purchase the lot and construct the entire house. Once the aspects like design and price are agreed upon, a deposit is taken and the process begins. ‘’ We don’t spec build (building homes without a buyer); you know how there are some builders who have three or four plans and build them over and over and over… so we just pretty much build full custom homes ‘’ explained Pierre Martell, owner of MHB, in an interview with Home & Lifestyle Magazine. Martell says he started the business because of what he likes to call ‘’ the three main pains statements’’ he was hearing from home buyers: 1. It was so stressful they’d never do it again

2. It was over- budget by 10-2030 000 dollars 3. It didn’t close on time

T

he unique part of this company is their online platform – which they call their is ‘‘’client ’client log in’’. Clients can log on to their plat platform to track their builds 24/7, in real time. Everything the client needs to know about their home building process is posted on the platform: decisions, options, conversations, everything is there, including weekly photos. They even keep track of the client’s credit, so they know exactly how much the price point is every day. The client is constantly able to see where MHB is in the process. ‘’So if you’re on vacation, you can see the progress that’s happened in that past 7 days. The technology is what makes us really unique.’’ Says Martell.

One of the great things MHB has done was partnering with the two hospitals in the city to build the ‘Hand in Hand’ lottery home. The lottery started just before the New Year, 2013, and the draw took place July 2014. According to the ‘Hand in Hand’ Lottery website, the proceeds realized from the ‘Hand in Hand’ Dream Lottery ‘’will be used by both foundations to fund vital projects that will ensure that The Moncton Hospital and the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre continue to be leaders when it comes to the delivery of health services and the attraction of world-class medical professionals.’’

‘’So if you’re on vacation, you can see the progress that’s happened in that past 7 days. The technology is what makes us really unique.’

Pierre Martell Martell has a very strong background in renovations which led him to enter the home construction business. He understood the mechanics of building a home. Actually, the very first ten homes built by MHB were actually built by Martell and three other guys. Eight years ago, when he first started thinking about creating the company, he thought: ‘’Gee, I think I can build a house, and close on time, and have fun while doing it’’. And so far, the company has built just under 400 homes all over the province of New Brunswick. They have never gone over budget by a dollar and have never missed a closing date. Moreover, they are planning on expanding into Nova Scotia within the next year or two!

Inside of a bedroom, brown and turquoise compliment eachother very well, and the earthtones make the perfect colour scheme for a comfortable and relaxed feel.

MHB’s vision is to continually redefine the way home building is measured in the industry, by their peers and, more importantly, by themselves. If you are ready to build your custom dream home, give them a call and book your appointment today!

Bringing the Family Together Written by: Faith Naugler

Thanksgiving is all about family, warmth, and great food. Its true, the best Thanksgivings that I can remember featured enticing aromas such as Apple pie, Pumpkin spice, & Mulled Cider. Mix it up with the warmth of family, crisp fall colors, and a home grown local Turkey, and that’s the stuff memories are made of. Here are a few fantastic recipes to create your own Thanksgiving Dinner.

Ingredients 1-1/2 Quarts Peeled, Sliced Apples, and Cranberries 2 Tbsp Cornstarch 1 Cup Hot Water 4 Tbsp Butter 1 Cup sugar 1 Tsp vanilla 2 Tsp Baking powder 1 Tsp Salt 2 Cups Flour Cook fruit over low heat with Cornstarch, stirring constantly until thickened. Set aside. Mix together hot water, butter, & sugar. Add vanilla. Add baking powder, salt, and flour; mix well. Pour fruit mixture into large casserole dish, top with batter mix. Pumpkin French Toast

Ingredients 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup pumpkin puree 4 eggs 2 Tbsp packed light-brown sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp ground ginger 9 slices Texas toast (or other white bread such as Challah or French bread) Butter, for griddle Directions

Preheat an electric griddle to 350 degrees (a non-stick skillet set over medium heat also works fine). In a mixing bowl whisk together milk, pumpkin puree, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger until well combined. Pour into a shallow dish. Butter griddle and dip bread into egg mixture (allowing a few seconds for it to absorb mixture. I also squeeze gently to soak the mixture to center), then rotate and coat opposite side. Transfer to griddle and cook until golden brown on bottom, then lift, butter griddle once more and flip french toast to opposite side and cook until golden brown. Serve warm with butter and maple syrup. GMA HOME & LIFESTYLE 56 Recipe Source: Cooking Classy

His dad before him, owned a few renting properties himself. ‘’ I choose this type of business because I owned properties myself, and I couldn’t find anyone to take care of a property that was under twelve units. So I started this business to cater those clients at the time.’’ Martell explains during an interview with Home & Lifestyle Magazine. Everyone dresses up as silly as possible and take pictures of one another. Don’t forget to include your pets. Your little dog wills look just silly in the baby’s kitty cat pyjamas! 25. Vacation time! Get a jar with a large opening or a strong box. Have everyone decorate the jar or box with craft supplies from around the house. Label it your ‘Vacation Savation’. Put it in a prominent place in your home, easily accessible by all family members. Encourage everyone to faithfully contribute his or her spare change and set a monetary goal. Once a month, have everyone share in counting and rolling the change. You will be astonished at the amount you will save if you are all diligent about contributing to the fund. If you are planning a family vacation, you can save towards a special extra activity such as spending a day training and swimming with the dolphins. If you are not planning a family vacation, your goal could be a family dinner at a favourite restaurant followed by a movie at the theatre. Either way, your ‘savation’ will show everyone that saving money leads to rewards. Note! After each goal is reached, set a new target and continue your ‘Vacation Savation’.

21. Attend the free shows oftentimes presented by local festivals. For example, during a week-long celebration showcasing award winning musicians, smaller venues may offer free concerts. Check your local free newspaper or the entertainment section of your locale’s website. Note! If an establishment where they serve liquor is one of the sites where a free concert is being held, call ahead to be sure minors are allowed to attend. Go Go Gadget! Tomorrow’s Technology is here Today

Ask About These Fab New Features When Deciding on a New Set of Wheels! Each year vehicle manufacturers are adding components they hope will lure buyers into their showrooms. Recently, they have spent much of their development dollars in the areas of safety and technology, two things most important to vehicle purchasers. Some of these advancements will remain as an option, while others will become standard features.Presented here is only a sampling of what is currently on the market. Assuredly, each year will bring new and innovative concepts meant to attract you and your hard earned dollars. 1. An iKey application in the Infiniti 50, stores the preferences of up to four users. It recognizes the users keyfob and automatically adjusts to their preprogramed seat position, climate controls, radio presets, GPS locations and mirror settings. 2. Mercedes and Infinity are offering electric ‘eyes’ in their luxury models. The ‘eye’ makes minor steering adjustments that keep the car centered in a lane. 3. The new ‘Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake’ option offered by Volvo will detect if a pedestrian or cyclist suddenly appears in the path of the vehicle and, if the driver does not react quickly enough, the system will automatically apply the brakes. 4. The 2014 Mazda 6 offers a $2000 option package that includes a device that kicks in when the car is idling. It shuts down the engine and recovers Kinetic energy the vehicle would lose while braking and stores it to power the electrical elements, such as the audio system and lights. It bypasses the alternator, thereby reducing drag on the engine and saving fuel. 5. If you purchase the Acura RLX luxury sedan, the brakes will automatically stay engaged for up to eight minutes. For example, you can wait for a train for six minutes without having to hold your foot on the brake pedal. 6. You have no excuse for not having a clean vehicle if you drive the Honda Odyssey Touring Elite minivan. Stored in the rear cargo area is a built in vacuum cleaner. It has all the components of a conventional vacuum cleaner and its’ hose reaches every corner of the minivan. It runs continuously when the car is turned on and for eight minutes after it is shut off. 7. How about a hot stone massaging seat and heated arm rests? Mercedes 5 Class vehicles offer this perk as a standard option.

8. Adaptive Cruise Control with Radar, maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. The sys system controls the brakes and the throttle, thereby never allowing you to crash into the vehicle you are following. BONUS! Volvo is offering an Infrared Radar System that detects objects, such as deer, in the road ahead. If the driver does not react to the audible warning system, the brakes are applied automatically as the object nears. 9. Bluetooth Audio is becoming standard on most of the mid priced vehicles, but should become an industry wide standard component within the next few years. In addition to being able to sync your phone, Bluetooth allows you to hear all of your playlists as well. It offers the benefit of not having to plug in anything in order to hear your music over your vehicle’s audio system. LOL! Chrysler ‘skipped a beat’ (literally and figuratively) when they offered a dashboard mounted record player in 1956. 10. Vehicle manufacturers are starting to add ‘Smartphone App Integration’ allowing the user access to their apps through the vehicle’s ‘infotainment’ display. For example, you are able to control your Pandora Internet Radio app while never taking your eyes off the road. 11. If you are on the road and do not have time to stop and check who just sent you an email or text message, ‘Text to Speech Radio Technology’ will be able to help. Let this Bluetooth based feature read your texts and emails through your vehicle’s speakers. This feature is now only offered with a digitized voice, but you will soon be able to have such voices as Homer Simpson or Cookie Monster reading your messages. 12. The ‘infotainment’ system of GM’s myink, IntelliLink and Cue enable you to have all your favourite items displayed on one screen. You can switch between using your phone, playing your most popular playlist and accessing your saved routes on your GPS, all from your vehicle’s main screen. HINT! If you do not want to wait for other car manufacturers to add their own version, for less than $500, you can purchase an after-market car radio from Pioneer. App Radio is a 6.1 inch touch-screen system which can be mounted anywhere in your vehicle. This accessory will support most of the apps that iPhones and iPods do. 13. Until recently, when travelling, you could only connect with WIFI from places like your hotel room or a restaurant. Chrysler and Audi are making WIFI available on the roads long as you have service, you can pull over and answer the email you just got from your boss.

14. New safety systems are being put forth with each new vehicle year. Recent ‘active’ driving advancements include hands free parallel parking and an audio alert when a vehicle is in your blind spot. With so many accidents being blamed on distracted drivers, these safety systems should decrease mishaps. 15. Ford will soon reveal a new feature that will monitor the driver’s heartbeat. If it detects an arrhythmia, it will immediately contact emergency services via the cellular phone integrated in car’s safety program. Ford’s research has shown the technology to be accurate at least 95% of time. They are busy tweaking the system. For example, when emergency services cannot be reached due to no signal being available, the app will keep trying until a signal is reached or battery power is depleted. 16. In 2011, the Hyundai Equus did not make the glove compartment bigger. They did, however, make more space by not offering the vehicle’s manual on paper. Instead, Hyundai provided an iPad equipped with the owner’s manual installed. The interactive manual takes learning how your vehicle works to a whole new level. As an owner, you can explore every area of your vehicle in full 3D. Watch for other manufacturers to soon follow with their own digital manuals. 17. Convertible owners will be on cloud nine to learn that with their next convertible purchase they will be able to open and close the roof while driving at speeds less than 50 KM/hr. When their cloud sends down an unexpected shower, they will not have to pull over and stand in the rain while closing the roof. 18. If you are buying a Mercedes Benz 5 Class, they offer a premium option for the in-dash entertainment system. The screen can be split so the driver, for example, can see the planned GPS route while the passenger watches a movie. If your passenger suffers from ‘Are we there yet?’ and ‘How much farther?’ syndromes, you will surely want to dole out the extra $900 for this benefit. 19. Drivers who are members of the ‘Lead Foot Club’ will undoubtedly want to invest in a Bugatti Veyron. This ultra expensive but worth every dime vehicle, has a ‘Top Speed’ key. Insert the first ignition key and be limited to around 240 KMs an hour. Insert the ‘Top Speed’ key as well and your vehicle lowers so it is just 2.5 inches off the ground, the rear spoiler trims to a two degree angle to reduce drag and you can travel at a speed of 400 KMs an hour and more. 20. In addition to the standard cruise control where drivers can only move the steering wheel up and down, many new vehicles are coming equipped with a steering wheel column that telescopes as well. This is allowing drivers more options in finding their most comfortable position. Also, thinner front seats are providing back seat passengers with more spacious legroom. 21. Have you ever walked to your vehicle with groceries in one hand and a screaming toddler in the other? You would rather not put either one down and wish you had another hand to unlock the door or open the trunk? How about a spare foot? As long as the keyless remote is in your hand or your pocket, just extend your foot briefly under the bumper and a sensor will automatically open the trunk or lift gate. This new sensor technology is quickly moving its’ way into the main stream.

GMA HOME & LIFESTYLE

84

22. The driver assistance package on 2013 Cadillac’s has one feature that is getting a lot of attention. If you are driving and get too close to the guard rail on your right, your seat will buzz on the right. If you move to change lanes to the left and a car is in your blind spot, your left seat buzzes. If you get too close, too quickly to the car in front of you, both sides of your seat will buzz. This safety feature would be desirable in any vehicle. 23. Nissan’s ‘Tire Pressure Alert System’ makes your tire gauge nearly obsolete. When you pull up to the air pump, leave your ignition key in the ‘on’ position. You begin filling the tire with air and when you reach the proper PSI (located on the lip of the driver’s door), your horn will sound. If you ignore the signal, your horn will start honking continuously. LOL! Chevrolet marketed a ‘liquid tire chain’ in 1969. It was a resin they could spray onto the rear tires of a vehicle to improve their traction on ice. The product, being so nasty to the environment, was quickly discontinued. 24. Many vehicles are already equipped with the ‘Back Up Collision Intervention System’ that allows you to ‘see’ what is behind you with a video camera. The system also emits an audible warning sound whenever you are backing up. Sometimes you simply cannot react fast enough to brake and avoid a collision with an object or a pedestrian. Manufacturers are now beginning to install a sensor that will apply the brakes before a collision occurs. 25. You should equip each vehicle in your household with an emergency kit that stays in the vehicle at all times. Included, should be the following: flashlight and battery powered lantern (put the batteries in backwards to guard against them being run down if the items are accidently turned on), spare batteries, transistor radio, ABC fire extinguisher, non-perishable food items (nuts, energy bars, peanut butter, sealed crackers), one large jug of water for every seat that is in your vehicle, three day supply of prescription medication for everyone in the home, first aid kit, blankets, warm clothing (mittens, scarves, hats and a good pair of snow boots in case you have to walk to get help), compass, plastic bags (for sanitary use), feminine items, non clumping kitty litter (for traction), small amount of cash (well hidden) and a collapsible shovel. With all of the new features being unveiled when vehicles arrive on the showroom floor and those that are yet to be invented, car shopping in the future may be more about how many cool options you can get and less about the price. It will take some time for the high-end components to trickle down so they are standard in mid-range vehicles, but with so many options available, you are almost guaranteed to be able to enjoy some of the gizmos with your next purchase.

Got Snow? Prepare Your Car Using These Recommendations and You Can Give Winter A Raspberry! Written by Pauline Milner

None of us want to talk about winter while we are still wearing shorts and swimming in the pool, however, you will thank yourself when that early snowstorm arrives and you see your neighbour cleaning the snow off his car with his shirt sleeve and watch other cars slide into the ditch as you cruise by with snow tires between you and the road. Keep your vehicle regularly maintained and not only will you be safer behind the wheel, you will be doing the environment a favour as well. These recommendations will insure you are ready for winter and will save you money. Finish them as soon as possible and you can enjoy the winter wonderland while oth-

ers scramble through the snow to get what they need for their emergency kit and wait in line to get their tires changed. 1. Slow Down! If you drive 100 km/ hr instead of 115 km/hr, you will lower your fuel consumption by as much as 12%. If you do a lot of city driving and you know you will have a long wait, such as at a train crossing, turn off your engine. Idling for more than a couple of minutes burns unnecessary fuel. 2. Keep your windows up. When you drive with the windows rolled down, you create an aerodynamic drag that will increase your fuel consumption by at least 10%. HINT!

86

Driving with your windows down and air conditioning on can burn as much as 15% more fuel. 3. You can use up to 4% more fuel if your tire pressures are uneven. Make it a habit to make sure your tire pressures are equal on a regular basis. HINT! Check it whenever you change your oil or every 5000 KMs. 4. Do not neglect the regular vehicle maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual. You will lose upwards of 4% in fuel economy if you ignore those regular checkups. 5. Fill your gas tank on cooler mornings. Fuel pumps are calculated by volume. Gas is denser when it is cold. It is worth putting on that pair

7. Book an appointment with your mechanic. Ask if they have a winter preparation package, most service stations do. The purpose of the visit is to make sure all of your vehicle’s components are in good condition. Also, you should ensure all fluids are topped off and that the washer fluid container is full.

ever you take a shorter route, putting fewer kilometres on your odometer is an added bonus.

HINT: Never fill your windshield washer container with water. It will freeze when the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius.

12. Never leave home without your cell phone and make sure it is fully charged. HINT: A car charger is a great investment.

8. Always keep a vehicle maintenance record. This can be as simple as having a pad of paper in the glove box to document service calls.

of gloves to get the most gas for your money. HINT: During the cold winter months, do not let your gas gauge go below one half of a tank. You will be thankful for the fuel if you become stranded in a storm. 6. Installing an electric block heater will make your vehicle start easier as the engine will already be warm. The inside temperature will rise quickly,

9. When your vehicle’s underside gets coated in salt, on a nice day, put a sprinkler on the hardest spray setting and turn it on under the vehicle. Move it around until you have everywhere covered. You will prevent salt from corroding things like your exhaust pipe. 10. When heading out to do errands, plan your route so you do not have to backtrack to stores. You will save time and fuel.

for a more comfortable ride.

HINT: When-

11. If you get stranded, check to be sure your exhaust pipe is clear. If it is, you can turn on your vehicle for about 10 minutes every half hour to keep warm. HINT: Stay with your car whenever possible. Only leave if you know where you are and that you can make it to safety.

13. When driving a long distance, make sure someone knows your planned route and when you are due to arrive. If you have an issue, anyone looking for you will know where to start. If there has been any bad weather in the area where you will be traveling, check the road report before you go. 14. Have you ever noticed that sign that says ‘Bridge Freezes Before Road’? It is a sign you definitely should pay attention to. When cold air gathers below any bridge or overpass, the cold air freezes the road faster, which may cause black ice to form. Decrease your speed and proceed with caution. HINT: If you hit black ice, try to steer the vehicle straight and let the antilock brakes do their job. You will feel the brake pedal pulsating under your foot. Resist the urge to pump the brake, just continue to apply steady

GMA HOME & LIFESTYLE

87

pressure until you can regain control of the vehicle. 15. Make sure you know the jargon terms relating to the weather and what they mean. Freezing Rain: Rain freezes as it hits the road. It creates a coat of ice on roadways. Sleet: Rain becomes ice pellets and when the pellets hit the road it becomes slippery. Wind Chill: What the temperature ‘feels like’ outside. Winter Weather Advisory: Poor weather is expected and you should take precautions. Winter Storm Watch: A winter storm is likely in your area. You should be ready. Winter Storm Warning: A winter storm is imminent. Be sure your emergency supplies are stocked and ready. Blizzard Warning: High winds are

GMA HOME & LIFESTYLE

expected to produce blowing snow that will considerably reduce visibility. You should not be driving. Frost/Freeze Warning: Temperatures that are below freezing are expecting. Flash Freeze: Temperatures that are above zero degrees Celsius are expected to drop rapidly to below zero degrees Celsius. Any water on the road will quickly freeze. Driving is not advisable. 16. If you do not have a road side assistance program, you may want to consider purchasing a membership with CAA (Canadian Automobile Association). You can purchase decent coverage for just over $100 a year. They offer many beneficial services that include towing, changing a flat tire, paying for a locksmith

88

when you lock your keys in your vehicle and travel insurance. 17. When you wake up to snow covering your vehicle, take the time to clear it off completely. Snow left on your car can blow off and possibly blind the driver behind you. Also, make sure all of you exterior mirrors are clear of ice and snow. 18. Ensure your head is positioned correctly when you are in the driver’s seat. The headrest should reach, at least, as high as the top of your ears. This will give you maximum protection from whiplash in the case of a rear end collision. 19. Have your car washed and a coat of wax applied before the temperature drops below 12 degrees

Celsius. The wax will help protect against salt damage and snow will fall off easier. 20. Purchase a set of water resistant vinyl or rubber car mats. They will protect the carpeted mats that came with your vehicle. 21. Invest in a set of good winter tires. Even if you have what are characterized as ‘all season’ tires, they will never give you the performance a winter tire can provide. Also, there is a trend toward making the use of winter tires law. HINT: Put your winter tires on by October 1st and avoid the long wait that will happen after the first snow fall. 22. Having a multi tool in your vehicle that can break a window and cut a seatbelt could prove to be a lifesaver. You can purchase a dual package at www.amazon.ca for $12.89 a pair. 23. Keep some lock de-icer at home and at your place of work. Locks can freeze in cold weather. De-icer works, but only if it is not in your glove box when you need it. No de-icer? A hair dryer will do the job as long as you have some place to plug it in. HINT: Never try to force you key when trying to unlock a frozen door. They break a lot easier than you would think.

so the snowplough driver can see you easily. HINT: If you are stranded, put the cover on the car so you can readily be seen. The cover will act as an insulator, helping to keep the heat in the vehicle and guarding against drafts. 25. If you find yourself stuck in snow without a shovel, a hubcap is a good substitution. 26. Leave emergency contact information in your glove compartment. In the unfortunate case of an accident, police will check there for any available information they can use to reach a relative or friend. Please do not leave the contact information of someone you frequently travel with. 27. If you are stranded in your vehicle on the side of the road, put a flare about 15 feet behind your car. Many drivers have the bad habit of drifting into the shoulder. The flare will alert them that you are there. The flare is also a good tool to alert other drivers that

you require assistance. 28. A set of booster cables is only good to have if you know how to use them. Clamp one red booster cable to the booster vehicle’s positive post. Clamp one red booster cable to the stalled vehicle’s positive post. Clamp the black booster cable to the booster vehicle’s negative post. Clamp the black booster cable to any bare metal surface under the hood of the stalled vehicle. Start the booster vehicle and let it idle for a few minutes. After a few minutes, start the stalled vehicle and let it idle for a few minutes. Disconnect the black booster cable from the formerly stalled vehicle. Disconnect the black booster from the booster car. Disconnect the red booster cable from the booster car. Disconnect the red booster cable from the formerly stalled vehicle. Drive, or at least run, the once stalled car for approximately one half hour in order for the battery to get sufficiently recharged. PLEASE NOTE: Occasionally you will see blue and black booster cables.

24. Use a cover if you have to park on the street to protect your vehicle from excessive salt. Even if you park in a driveway, a vehicle cover will keep the snow off thus saving you cleaning time. Buy a bright color

GMA HOME & LIFESTYLE

89

Black is always the negative cable, any other colour used is a positive cable. 29. Learn how to change your vehicle’s windshield wipers and keep a spare pair in your vehicle. If a wiper breaks during travel and you do not have a spare to install, or if you do not know how to install the blade, you are stuck where you are until help arrives. 30. When the supplies on this list are kept in every vehicle you use, you will be capable to handle most emergencies. Emergency supplies include (but are not limited to) the following: Properly inflated spare tire that has been checked for leaks, wrench and jack that are specific to the vehicle, collapsible shovel, battery booster cables, bag of non clumping kitty litter (to be used for traction), general tool kit, flashlight with extra batteries (put the batter-

ies backwards in the flashlight to guard against it being accidently turned on), battery powered lantern to use when reading (again, reverse the batteries), reflective ‘help’ sign you can put in your back window, compass, first aid kit, feminine products, jug of windshield cleaner (properly mixed), ice scraper, snow brush (one with a handle that can be extended to reach over the roof of your vehicle is a good choice), non-perishable high energy foods (dried fruit, cashews or other nuts, protein bars, cookies), 4 litres of water for every available seat, flares, extra warm clothing (mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and a good pair of snow boots), transistor radio, ABC fire extinguisher, plastic bags (for sanitary purposes), three day supply of all prescription medications for everyone in your home, a few magazines and books (boredom will quickly set in if you are strand-

90

ed), a small amount of cash (well hidden) and a disposable cell phone (check occasionally to see if it needs charging). All of the preceding recommendations are important. It would prove difficult to prioritize one over another as they all serve valuable purposes. If you do have to choose only some, due to budget or other constraints, adopt the elements that deal with safety first. When you make safe driving a priority, you help make sure others, including yourself, always reach their destinations.

If you are going to be a statistic, you should endeavour to be a positive one.

How to live a day-to-day stress free life Written by Sandra Melanson

With all the things one is tasked with throughout the day it’s a wonder anybody can live a stress free life any day. We often are thinking ahead of ourselves, preparing for what it is we need to do next. Stressing over issues such as money, our jobs, family and the list goes on. There never seems to be time for anything and we find ourselves caught in the daily rut we call life. BUT, it doesn’t have to be like that! You do have a choice! It’s not going to be easy and it will definitely take some training but the results will set you on your way to living each day as stress free as possible. We are creatures of habit so therefore breaking those habitual rituals will take some doing. Start slow by choosing one thing each day that you are willing to change in your habits. Now, I don’t mean stop eating breakfast or driving the kids to school but rather change the way you see and think about the things around you. For instance, if you have a flower garden around your home or a favourite plant then take the time to stop and admire it or “smell the roses” as they would say. Think only of the beauty of what you are looking at, don’t think about anything else. It only takes a few extra seconds on your way to the car or walking into the house, perhaps there’s an atrium at the work place or a nearby park. Train yourself to STOP, take a look and enjoy whatever it is that makes you smile which will make you feel relaxed and thus reduce stress even if it’s only for a few minutes. Always try and start your day in a good mood, positive energy goes a long way when trying to combat stress. A positive attitude creates positive energy, which attracts positive people. Stay away from negativity whenever possible. Train yourself to speak in a positive manner and remove yourself from negative situations. No! Not the important ones, but those negative situations that don’t involve you directly. Ignore them and keep moving on, train yourself not to let it bother you. Train yourself to accept people for what they are and don’t be judgmental. A wise lady once said to me “it isn’t any of my business what other people think about

me”, which is a very true statement if you think about it. Worrying about what people have to say about you isn’t worth wasting your time over. Harping on others’ faults or deficiencies is a negative thought and causes stress. Try and look at the big picture to see if it’s actually worth wasting your time and energy on. At the end of the day, there is probably nothing you can do about it and if it doesn’t affect your life directly, let it go. “Stay out of your head”, is the best advice I can give. This will be the most difficult training to accomplish. I’ve been training myself for years but it’s getting easier. I’m able to realize more quickly when my brain gets lost in mindless chatter and pull myself back. We as humans continually get caught up in our own thoughts. There are several conversations going on inside our heads that are often irrelevant to the reality because we will never act on them. Whether it’s making up scenarios or trying to find the perfect words to use at your next encounter with someone. The reality is, it rarely ever happens the way you intend it to or so carefully planned. So don’t bother wasting your energy as it can become mentally exhausting. Keep the mind free of needless clutter and you will find that stress will be reduced substantially. You should have noticed by now that the operative word in my message is “TRAIN”. Living a stress free life each day will take training and years of it. We’ve been “trained” our entire lives to worry and fret over everything so now it’s time that you “train” yourselves to think differently. It won’t happen over night and it won’t always be a success, sort of like quitting smoking. It may take more than one attempt but with focus and determination you will and can succeed at reducing everyday stress. Good Luck and Stay Out of Your Head!

L L A B G N O L K Y SW Make a Good Turn To add distance to your game this season, focus on making a good shoulder turn. You want to create coil and torque in your swing to generate power. That means you need to rotate your torso. I like to think of getting my back to the target in my back swing for all of my clubs. Even if you don’t have the flexibility to do that, the swing thought makes you turn more. A big power leak in the turn for many players is that they tend to lift the club with their hands in their take away ( see picture to the right ) The club comes straight up and it is very difficult to get it back on path. Women often lift the club versus turn because they are typically more flexible. It is why many ladies cannot hit it over 200 yards. Instead, you want to initiate your backswing with your shoulders. Think of using your big muscles to turn, not your hands. This will automatically bring the club on an inside path and allow you a greater ability to turn.

Let your body Load and Unload Properly Make sure to be patient and allow your turn to finish and allow your body to load. Often players are so anxious to hit the shot they start their down swing before they have fully loaded up and maximized their turn. Don’t forget to start the downswing with the lower body. If you start your down swing from the top you will lose all of the coil and torque you built up before you reach impact. Also ensure you keep swinging through impact. Your club head should be moving fastest 3 feet past the ball. This will automatically take you to your front side. ALL of your weight should be over the front foot. You should be able to lift your back foot up as you hold your finish. If you can’t you did not swing through the ball and transfer your weight.

Tempo Tip Many players swing too fast in their take away which throws off their tempo. If you swing too fast in your take away you often rush your transition to your down swing. I have one of two swing thoughts when I feel I am rushing. One is “Low and Slow” on my back swing which reminds me not to pick my club in my take away and instead keep the club head low to the ground and to be patient. The other swing thought is “Ernie Els”. Not only is the gentle giant PGA Tour player a perfect role model for smooth tempo, his name also lends well as a swing aid. Often I will say “Ernie” in my back swing so it is two beats (syllables) long and I’ll say “Els” in my downswing which is only one beat and allows me to think speed. Go Long!
