College News Elizabeth Fletcher Poetry Prize The Elizabeth Fletcher Poetry Prize is an annual poetry prize given in memory of Elizabeth Fletcher (Homerton 2002-2005) by her parents. This year the competition is on the theme ‘An Early Memory’. Wendy Cope OBE, award winning contemporary English poet, will be presenting the award in February. The Power of Caribbean Poetry – Word and Sound A conference on Caribbean Poetry will be held at Homerton College and the Faculty of Education from 20–22 September 2012. Speakers and performers include John Agard, Beverley Bryan, Kei Miller, Mervyn Morris, Grace Nichols, Velma Pollard, Olive Senior, Dorothea Smartt. Further details are available online.
From the College Archive: A short film of the opening of the Queen's Wing by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in May 1957. You are now able to view a film made of this event which has been made available from the College archives. This film is hosted on the Cambridge University’s YouTube Channel.
Fellows News – New Publications Dr Peter Cunningham’s Politics and the Primary Teacher is newly published by Routledge. This new book encourages and supports primary teachers in reflecting critically on the politics of the important work they do. Primary teachers deploy an impressive array of knowledge and skills in their work. It is a rewarding job but one that makes huge demands. Professor Jim Campbell’s review describes the book “A distinctive and much needed analysis of primary teaching as political activity, Dr Cunningham’s new book is scholarly and stunningly well written.” Professor Maurice Galton calls it “A must read for anyone concerned for our children's wellbeing." The Charter Choir (founded in 2009) will be going on its first international tour from 2-9 July 2012. The Choir will travel by Eurostar to Alsace, performing in Saverne, Marmoutier Abbey, and a number of churches in Strasbourg. HATStands Homerton’s variety show featuring the best student and staff talent, will be held in early March.
