EDITOR’S MESSAGE
“Furniture is such an intricate part of the family home, it’s not just a backdrop – it’s the spine, and my passion is in the pieces,” said Charles, the ninth Earl Spencer and brother of the late Princess Diana, when he recently visited Jordans’ Vancouver showroom to promote his furniture line – Althorp, a Living History. I thought Earl Spencer’s ‘spine’ metaphor was profound and on point. The sofas, chairs, tables and beds we carefully select to furnish our homes are pieces that literally support us and hold us up like backbones. There is always so much to see and learn in this industry, and it is after perusing, admiring and shooting some visually stunning furniture showrooms that Homes & Living proudly presents our annual Home Furnishings issue. We know you’ll find plentiful design inspiration on Homes & Living’s pages, and whether you prefer classic or modern, our featured pieces will endure, and are the perfect fit for your home. As ever, I thank you for all of your emails. I always enjoy reading and responding, as you, our readers, help inspire great ideas for H&L! Sincerely,
Amanda Stutt MANAGING EDITOR

his charming and contemporary holiday home dwells in the little fishing village of Mölle in southwest Sweden. Dreamed up by Stockholm-based architects Johan Oscarson and Jonas Elding, the Y-shaped structure defies convention and celebrates Mölle’s architectural progressivism during the 20th Century. In the late 1800s, the seaside spot became known as “Sinful Mölle”, as it was Northern Europe’s first locale for men and women to bathe together in the same place – albeit still fully clothed. The influx of foreigners and the open-mindedness of the era left a trail of eccentric, un-Swedish buildings in its wake. “It feels very exotic when you enter it. The nature is dramatic and the houses are extravagant,” said Jonas Elding of the town, which borders the Kullaberg Nature Reserve and harbours on the Kattegat Strait. The creation of Mölle by the Sea was no breezy endeavour. Swedish authorities rebuffed architectural renderings for 19 months, until finally granting Elding Oscarson a building permit. “They wanted it to look like a building from the early 19th Century,” Elding said. “But we wanted to challenge that. We wanted to make something contemporary, something festive, and a little bit extreme, which we think is the tradition in this place.” The most striking feature about their design is the contrast between the glass and the wooden façade. But the tender separation of the site also leaves a lingering impression. “This site had great qualities that were on all sides of the house. That’s why the shape is dividing the site so that the biggest part still faces the sea, but it also creates other spaces, which have different qualities,” said Elding. »

TOP The building’s shape challenges the convention to turn all sides towards the same seaside view. Its variation of shape tenderly exposes the many different qualities of the site. BOTTOM The ground floor is wrapped in low iron glass, with sliding doors and undivided panes of up to almost 7 metres wide.

Lush greenery blankets the plot while old stone and brick walls encircle its perimeters. The front area features a life-sized fairy garden and the historic ice cellar semi-submerged into a hill was ingeniously converted into a sauna. “In the private courtyard in the back of the house, we also get an ocean view because of the transparency of the house,” notes Elding, who is a self-proclaimed glass maniac. The established European architects Elding and Oscarson were most pleasantly surprised by how the borderlines of big windows on the first floor neatly disappear into the Douglas fir façade. “That’s something that’s difficult to show in pictures. You need to be physically there to sense, actually,” said Elding. h

ancouver architect Michael Green has worked on everything from private residences to airports to university buildings. He’s also calling for an overhaul of the very fundamentals of building. Forget making skyscrapers out of concrete and steel. Green’s proposal is this: use wood instead. The idea turns conventional design on its head. The founder of Michael Green Architecture (MGA) says big, systemic change is needed to tackle climate change and housing demand around the world. Wood is a safe, carbon-neutral, renewable and sustainable alternative to more common structural materials. When harvested sustainably, wood used in place of other materials decreases greenhouse-gas emissions. It’s economical, strong, and, perhaps surprisingly, fire-resistant, thanks to the novel design of mass timber, solid panels of wood engineered for strength through laminations of different layers. “New wood technology can reshape the future of building,” Green says. “A century ago, steel buildings were becoming the way we defined every skyline on earth. People get excited about the first new way to build a skyscraper in 150 years.” »

ARCHITECT PROFILE CONCEPT + CUSTOMIZATION + CONSTRUCT
“The real issue is we should build more with renewable resources like wood,” he adds. “We should build that at all scales, from private houses to schools to urban buildings at lower heights and urban buildings at really high heights. We’re leveraging going tall to develop the engineering solutions that will allow us to use wood products in almost every building that we build in the world.” Green, whose 2013 TED talk on wood skyscrapers has garnered more than one million views, says the idea is gaining momentum around the globe. “Almost every architectural school I know of talks about it and almost every engineering school is talking about it everywhere in the world,” he says. “There are proposals coming out every month now for new, tall wood buildings somewhere in the world…we’re shattering concepts of what people think is possible.” Consider the nine-storey Stadthaus building in London as an example of wood’s potential. With a team of 25 designers, MGA is proposing a 35-storey wood tower in Paris, which would be the world’s tallest. Green was the principal architect for the new Ronald McDonald House in British Columbia, an all-wood structure covered with brick. And he designed the Wood Innovation Design Centre at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George, North America’s tallest contemporary timber building, earning him an Innovation in Architecture award for 2015 from Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Green’s other nods include a 2014 Governor General Award, IIDA Project of the Year, and several AIBC and Lieutenant Governor awards. Born in the small town of Baker Lake in the Canadian Arctic, Green spent most of his childhood in Ottawa. He completed his undergraduate degree at Cornell University then worked with César Pelli, who’s known for designing some of the world’s tallest buildings. Green moved to Vancouver with his wife 17 years ago and began designing airports, including those in Montevideo, Moscow and Ottawa.

ARCHITECT PROFILE CONCEPT + CUSTOMIZATION + CONSTRUCT
“I THINK THE GREATNESS OF DESIGN IS THAT IT BRINGS MEANING AND QUALITY TO PEOPLE’S LIVES.”
He eventually founded Michael Green Architects and has gone on to design offices, academic buildings, townhouse complexes, restaurants, private homes and other buildings. The architect behind the Pirurvik Centre, a cultural and gathering space in Iqaluit, he is currently working on the Oregon State University’s forestry school and is revamping a 100-year-old heritage home in Vancouver, among other projects. The diversity is intentional. “It’s all over the map, and I love it,” Green says. “I’ve always believed that diversity makes you a stronger designer. If you’ve worked on very, very small things or very, very large things you’re not intimidated by scale. You may take ideas you developed for a small project, say a home, and apply to something else you’re doing like an airport. The cross-pollination of ideas makes you stronger.” “I’ve always been a huge traveller and adventurer, and the idea of working in lots of different places around the world and the idea of working in developing countries is important to me,” adds Green, who has designed buildings in Tajikistan and Tunisia, among other places. A member of 1% for the Planet, MGA also runs DBR – Design Build Research, a registered non-profit school that provides hands-on design experience for architecture and interior design students, recent grads and retirees. In partnership with the United States, DBR is calling for proposals for affordable housing made of wood in Africa. While he’s clearly passionate about new possibilities in architecture and engineering, at the heart of Green’s work is something with a little more soul. “Architecture and design have become very much about celebrating the curious, the crazy, the big ideas that are all about shapes and colours…but not necessarily about meaning.” Green says. “I think the greatness of design is that it brings meaning and quality to people’s lives.” “What is successful architecture? It’s too much defined by the aesthetic and not the meaning,” he adds. “Through making buildings very meaningful they become beautiful. By meaningful I mean really relevant to their user, their community, and to the environment. I’d rather start with that idea than the end product of what it should look like. We start with why we’re doing it. That’s our philosophy.” h

SHIFT INTERIORS: ON POINT how an idea and a play on words evolved into a thriving design firm words markella mildenberger

photos tracey ayton photography
hift Interiors has evolved from what began as an idea with a play on words and into an interior design studio filled with the air of possibility, thanks to its business-oriented designer and wise leader Jamie Deck. Director and interior designer Deck says the firm wasn’t always what it is now, but was a solo balancing act for years prior to her establishing what is now Shift. She credits the transformation of the company to her acceptance and understanding that she cannot do it alone, and it is with that melding of strengths, collaboration and mutual respect that Shift creates beautiful designs time and time again. Growing up with a father who was an engineer, Deck was immersed in architectural plans, models and concepts her entire life and says she really discovered her passion for interior design when she was about 13 years old. Her passion for the creative trade didn’t end there, and Deck went on to pursue art school, graphic design, and eventually realize that her direction was in fulfilling her diploma in interior design. »

“BEING ORGANIZED AND FOLLOWING STRUCTURE REALLY HELPED BRING THIS CONCEPT TO LIFE.”
Through the mentorship of her sister Kelly Deck, also a gifted interior designer, she was able to push her limits and mentions how her sister has been very influential on her growth. On that note, Deck is ambitious with the goals for Shift, having already launched Shift Mexico with goals that in a year from now she will be working from both countries. Pushing her limits is among her strengths, as she discusses a Point Grey property she designed last year. What started off in 2008 as a renovation of the main level, turned into a full addition of a second floor, with some very unique challenges and considerations working within the constraints of an older home. The now 3,400-square-foot property is a melding of modern west coast design and elegant functionality. Deck says of the entire process, “Being organized and following structure really helped bring this concept to life.” She mentions that working with the right team of talented people is also always key.

“HAVING THE PROPER TEAM TO SUPPORT IN THE RIGHT AREA IS CRUCIAL TO EACH DESIGN.”
“Having the proper team to support in the right area is crucial to each design,” she says, also adding how this was among the many things she would consider her most valuable lessons. Her process starts with understanding how her clients process information so she can focus on how to best communicate with them and keep the entire design process as transparent as possible. “Creating a clear picture for clients from start to completion is so important so that they feel confident in the entire project,” Deck says. h

e are walking up a steep, U-shaped pink stone speckled driveway, away from the Mediterranean-style villa surrounded by lush palm trees and foliage, in Vancouver’s tony Point Grey. Jacqui Cohen, voluptuous in a midnight blue silk Les Habitudes sheath dress, leans on my shoulder to remove her high-heels; barefoot, she continues her meet and greet. But not with the 240 invited guests who have donated $2,500 a ticket to her Face The World 25th Anniversary Gala that gets underway in an hour. First she must meet the young men and women providing valet parking, security, the DJ perched on a rooftop stage and a myriad of excited hostesses and wait staff. “My parents and grandparents were always involved with fund-raising for charities and a big inspiration to me,” says Cohen, President and CEO of the downtown east side’s iconic Army & Navy department store, founded by her late grandfather, Samuel Cohen in 1919. She keeps an office there and continues to work the floor several days a week. In keeping with family tradition, her daughter Kasondra has started a spin-off charity, Face Of Today in both Vancouver and Chicago. Cohen started Face the World Foundation in 1991 specifically to make a difference to people struggling on Vancouver’s Eastside with all proceeds delegated to about 60 organizations in that community. Over $15 million has been donated since then, with

particular emphasis on those that support abused women and children, the elderly and homeless. She literally lives by the old adage that ‘charity begins at home’; opening her house she purchased 30 years ago to the most prominent community and corporate leaders as well as celebrities (Goldie Hawn, Tom Jones, author Jackie Collins, Gene Simmons and family, even a newly discovered Michael Bublé) who have come together for the past 25 years to raise money for Face The World Foundation. Designed by Vancouverite, the late Robert Ledingham, one of Canada’s premier interior designers, Cohen bought an existing two-storey home on the 30,000-square-foot property with 150 square feet of unobstructed waterfront, in the mid 80s. “We kept the same footprint and the U-shaped driveway and when the front door is open, you see fantastic views right through to the pool and ocean. Robert flipped what was previously a bedroom, into a kitchen on the first floor,” says Cohen. The five-bedroom, 11-bathroom home “has been through many transformations since then, with help from Lauren Persson, owner of Fino Lino in Vancouver, amongst others,” she explains. Cohen’s home is an eclectic mix of modern and antique with warm ochre, taupe and white walls throughout so as not to compete with colourful art and the spectacular floor to ceiling views of ocean and mountains. “I have a beautiful collection of Lalique glass that belonged to my sister that’s very important to me,” she adds. »

It brought close to its $70,000 value at the evening’s live auction. Designed by Vancouverite the late Robert Ledingham, one of Canada’s premier interior designers, Cohen bought an existing two-storey home on a 30,000-square-foot property with 150-square-feet of spectacular unobstructed waterfront, in the mid 80s.

THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY GALA WENT ON TO RAISE $1.5 MILLION DOLLARS THAT EVENING.
“We temporarily moved out almost every piece of Jacqui’s furniture for the 25th Anniversary Gala, and added white leather sofas to create intimate lounge seating areas,” said event organizer Simon Cooksley of Simon Cooksley Design. The amicable Brit, who has created the event for 13 years at Cohen’s home, came up with the Gala’s spectacular purple and silver colour palette from a piece of exquisite silk he saw on a trip to London last year. The foyer’s enchanting eight-foot-high centrepiece of lavender roses, purple hydrangeas and towering mauve gladiolas, was constructed on a round mahogany table strewn with orchid blooms in every hue, like blossoms after a tropical rain. Cooksley’s vision extended to a dramatically draped tent from which crystal chandeliers were suspended over a floor covering Cohen’s outdoor pool. Vivid centrepieces of orchids and hydrangeas flown in from California, Holland and Thailand festooned 24 tables. Of course the pièce de résistance was Cooksley’s bespoke dinner jacket made at London’s New & Lingwood, from that original piece of hand-woven floral silk that inspired the decor. The 25th Anniversary Gala went on to raise $1.5 million dollars that evening. “I’ll be re-building my home soon,” says Cohen. “I’m currently working with architect Russell Hollingsworth, (he apprenticed with Frank Lloyd Wright,) who actually designed our mid- century family home at UBC and also the home of Lululemon founders, Shannon and Chip Wilson in Point Grey. I’d like to make better use of that huge driveway space to give me more ocean view and space in the back for entertaining.” “I’m really an outdoors girl, admits Cohen. “I swim every day, my daughter visits often, I have my dog Martini and there is nothing more beautiful than watching the sunset from our terrace. I’m truly blessed.” h

lthough the owners of this split level, sun-kissed character home on West 48th avenue had renovated before, this particular project called for renewal, and the addition of living space to the 3,800-square-foot home to a family of five and a giant schnauzer. When Joe Geluch, President of Naikoon Contracting Ltd. and his team started the project with DESIGNSTUDIO8 in June 2014, they didn’t foresee the actual completion date would be so far out, (February 2015). It wasn’t that problems arose; it was more that the homeowners were so easygoing and fun to work with, and that new ideas kept emerging and additional touches kept getting added. “It was a very communicative, transparent group,” Geluch remembers. “The initial design is one thing, and as you begin to open things up and see new angles and views on things, everybody had great ideas, and it was a great compilation – it really transformed the home into something very special – it just kept getting better and better.” The main ideas were to improve the home’s livability and increase the open concept of the kitchen by expanding the counter and knocking out the wall, adding a long Nano window that opens up like an accordion, effectively linking the kitchen to the outside bar and deck.
42
Lucia Sakhrani, principal of DESIGNSTUDIO8, a design collaborative with architect Tina Hubert, remembers the challenge of working within the neighbourhood’s strict design guidelines. “We were super-limited in regards to how much square footage we could add, despite the size of the property’s 10,000-square-foot lot, we could only add just under 500 square feet,”she says. Working within the guidelines, the team was able to not only expand the kitchen, but also add an ensuite with a walk-in closet on the upper floor, and a rec room for the kids in the basement. “Because of the guidelines, we really had to focus on the interior to create space that [the homeowners] would be happy with,” she notes. The design theme was decidedly Mid-century Modern, with an ode to the sunny, modern architecture found in Palm Springs – a vacation destination the homeowners have long been enamored with. “The whole house was a mid-century inspiration, with skylights, whitewashed floors and washed-out greys, giving the impression that sun is trapped inside the house,” Sakhrani says. Much of the design was influenced by the print the homeowners have in the living room, based on the iconic modernist photograph by Slim Aarons, ‘Poolside Gossip,’ taken in Palm Springs in 1970. »

THE SPACE REFLECTS BOTH THE HOMEOWNERS’ WARMTH, AND THEIR REFINED TASTES.
LEFT + ABOVE The timeless Nano window opens the airy kitchen to the outdoor deck. Inside, cool, sleek mid-century accents, like blue light fixtures and kitchen china, and wood panelling create a calm, soothing ambiance. BOTTOM LEFT The modernist aesthetic is maintained through furnishings like the ‘womb chair’ by Eero Saarinen in the family room.
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015
“When people throw around the word ‘modern’ these days, they don’t really understand that it’s of a particular era,” Sakhrani points out. Furnishings were selected with painstaking precision to maintain the modernist aesthetic throughout the home. In the family room the ‘womb chair’ by Eero Saarinen is a focal point, the kitchen bar stools are by Harry Bertoia, ‘swoop chairs’ are by Brian Kane, and the ceiling lighting and sconces are “Parker” lights by Jonathan Adler. Textiles and millwork all reflect mid-century patterns, and Sakhrani describes the textures as playful and whimsical. She says the space reflects both the homeowners’ warmth, and their refined tastes. “As designers and architects we love the craft of construction, and we love how things come together – we share that, we’re all on the same wavelength,” Sakhrani says. For homeowners Dina Sikorski and Scott Naimer, original east coasters who migrated west and were captivated by the iconic modernist architecture they found on their trips to Palm Springs, this renewal project reiterated their love for the home, which they plan on leaving never. “We fell in love with the indoor-outdoor living and the mid-century vibe, and that sort of 50s-60s era of design, and when we started looking at our house we looked to that as inspiration both for furnishings and for actual design and flow,” explains Naimer.

“ANY DESIGN THAT’S BEEN AROUND FOR DECADES AND STILL APPEALS AND STILL WORKS IS WHAT ATTRACTED US...”
With an emphasis on opening up the spacious and airy kitchen to the outdoor deck via the Nano window, they didn’t want anything too splashy – they wanted something timeless. A big attraction to this home was the 2,000-square-foot floor plan, which Naimer says ruled out what he considers the inefficiencies staircases can present. “It’s very efficient, it flows very well and feels considerable larger than it is,” he says. “We wanted to add a lot of flow and consistency, so we ripped up and changed the stairs, and the wood panelling in the stairs is a reference to that wood panelling of the 60s, but with a modern application,” he adds. “Any design that’s been around for decades and still appeals and still works is what attracted us – we didn’t want anything to feel dated.” Naimer also says part of the attraction to the ‘modern’ is that it’s been around for a very long time and it has endured, as has this family’s love of their home. “On the right day, when everything’s quiet – we feel like we’re on vacation.” h

he problem with this Stanley Park-facing penthouse condominium with spectacular panoramic views of the ocean and mountains was that the space was dated; so much so that an unused nanny suite built by the original owners had sat empty for some time behind the kitchen. The solution was a renovation, and Beatrice Hsu, owner and principal designer at Isometrix Design Inc. was called in to transform and update the 23-year-old two-storey apartment. The owner, an ocean-loving mariner, wanted the result of the renovation and new design to bring the Coal Harbour Marina (visible from the floor to ceiling curved windows) aesthetic indoors. The owner, he said, wanted to feel like he was on a yacht. This request called for teak and holly flooring, found on the decks of yachts, to be installed throughout. In addition to empty rooms and unused space, this condominium posed a unique challenge: the space was completely round, with a 3,000-square-foot total circumference complete with round features, rotunda and wrap-around outside deck. “Everything was challenging because everything was round and curved, so all the baseboards had to be bent, and new steel beams were dry walled in,” Hsu said. »

Some of the upstairs, Hsu said, was like an empty void of space, and not really useable, so in an innovative twist, she added floating lights into the mix that can actually change colour. “You can have any colour you like, there are hundreds of colours, and depending on what mood you’re in, it could be white, pink, blue or even red, and if you want to have a party they can also strobe and flash,” laughed Hsu. The entire kitchen was outfitted with brand new plumbing and counters, with grey oak floors, porcelain and limestone tiles, and English oak cabinets. “The kitchen counter, because we were quite tight on the space, had to be redone, and it turned out well,” Hsu said. In all four of the bedrooms, soft, muted colour schemes of browns and taupes and greys keep the marina aesthetic afloat, and a new powder room was added as well. Downstairs, walls were moved, and all of the doors were raised from seven feet to eight feet and custom installed. Another initial challenge was the proverbial budget, which some consultants claimed was half of what would be needed. By eschewing limitations and using her ingenuity, Hsu was able to bring the whole project in on just a fraction over the original number. h

hile much of our indoor downtime tends to be spent in a technological haze, thumbing through Instagram or browsing Netflix, designers are coaxing nostalgia for the 1950s and '60s into our living rooms. This sleek, minimalist style dubbed Mid-century Modern involves clean lines, unique lighting fixtures and bold graphic patterns. It blends the fuss-free design aesthetic of the fifties with that vibrant sixties palette we love. Largely influenced by Don Draper’s office and AMC’s hit television drama “Mad Men,” Mid-century Modern décor celebrates an era known for ingenuity and fresh ideas. For smaller spaces, opt for a sofa with soft curves and sloped arms. Orange is an iconic Midcentury Modern hue that brightens any living space and midnight blue velvet brings classic beauty and comfort. There’s no better way to kick back and contemplate la dolce vita then on a plush, Italian designed 3-seater sofa. Stylish modular sectionals work well in larger seating areas, and decorating them with brightly coloured accent pillows adds that personal touch. »

rom different perspectives, one sees amorphous cumulus clouds or a colony of opaque jellyfish, each seemingly alive with their own bright light. At night, they resemble benign icebergs – no fear of colliding – because they are trapped in fabric and suspended from the ceiling on braided coaxial cable. This is Bocci’s ‘73’. An innocuous name for architect-designer Omer Arbel’s newest organic lighting collection, unveiled this year at Maison & Object Paris interior design show. Part science experiment, part sculpture, Arbel invented the technique whereby glass is blown into a vessel of Kevlar fabric (used by NASA and in Formula 1 racing suits,) because it can withstand heat up to 1700 degrees Celsius. When it cools, forced air pressure allows the texture of the fabric to permanently mold into any abstract glass shape – and no two are ever the same. When the elevator opens onto the 5th floor offices of the Bocci-owned building in Vancouver, one understands immediately that playful ingenuity is at work. A roofless interior courtyard with a green oasis is surrounded by wisteria on deliberate urban decay of peeling paint and cement. It’s contrasted by modern wall-to-wall glass through which open-concept workstations and colourful glass globes are visible. A separate glass-blowing studio behind the building will soon move to a much larger location. “It’s been a crazy, amazing year for me,” admits Israeli-born Arbel, 38, architect and Bocci’s co-founder and creative director, who grew up in Jerusalem then moved to Vancouver with his parents at age 13. He was a competitive fencer and could easily have stayed in the sports arena but “loved Lego and building models as a kid and knew even then that I wanted to be an architect,” he says. After graduating from the University of Waterloo School of Architecture he established Omer Arbel Office (OAO) in 2005. Bocci (after the Italian game of strategy,) is his multidisciplinary arm specializing in industrial design, furniture, the 2010 Olympic medals, lighting and most recently, set design. But it’s the synergy he derives from both disciplines working together that drives Arbel. »

TOP For the 2015 re-opening of the refurbished Canada House in London, England, Arbel designed his most difficult project to date, ‘57’. ABOVE LEFT Arbel’s newest organic lighting collection, ‘73’, was unveiled this year at Maison & Object Paris Interior Design Show. ABOVE RIGHT In 2014, Bocci cleverly conceived a 100-metre copper and glass installation, ‘38’, that lit up the Rock Bank Tunnel at the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in London, England. Small space... ...live large In February, Arbel and his team debuted an incredibly challenging permanent lighting installation called “57” over the central staircase for the opening of the refurbished Canada House in London, England: three storeys of hundreds of tangled tentacles each attached to their own bubbled glass solar system. “That was probably the most complex piece I’ve ever designed”, says Arbel. “I went through 50 to 60 different versions for their committee to approve, then eight people on our team to make it. What really made it difficult was the bureaucratic red tape to hang it because it’s a heritage building, so we weren’t allowed to drill into anything. I had a crew of six on the scaffolding, with me directing below, over five days. Everything had to be perfect because Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth walked under it. I rehearsed what I should say – you can’t make conversation unless she addresses you first so I just said ‘your Majesty’ when she made eye contact and she nodded her head,” smiles Arbel. He received the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s (RAIC) Allied Arts Medal 2015 in March for his spectacular 2013 installation at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, ‘28.280’. It filled and transformed a 30-metre vertical space in a cascade of 280 colourful hand-blown ‘28’-series pendants. A little less daunting was Bocci’s outdoor public art installation “16” in March, composed of steel trees illuminated inside with abstract buds or leaves in front of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, Vancouver. Always challenging himself, especially to interconnect with other disciplines, Arbel made his first foray into set design this past May for Ballet BC’s RITE an existential interpretation of the 1913 world premiere of The Rite of Spring with music composed by Igor Stravinsky. “This was a wonderful opportunity to create a reality that disappears after a while, like a dream,” Arbel explains. He took his inspiration from the original 1913 painting by set designer Nicholas Roerich that featured a large central tree that Arbel refers to as “a ghost tree.” Like an alchemist experimenting in his laboratory, Arbel is a visionary who is as much obsessed with the process as much as the final outcome – perhaps the former even more so. “I crave the instances where there are no constraints – I believe the best ideas are sometimes arrived at that way – even accidentally,” he confides. Arbel refers to the stark salt crystal trees that he “grew” (he won’t divulge the secret,) in a vat for a year to produce the sparkly branches and leaves for RITE. “We originally experimented with ocean water but that didn’t work out, he admits. The exploration process and collaboration was so fulfilling that Arbel hopes to create more for the stage in the future. Exhibiting at international trade shows, launching Bocci’s ‘73’ in Miami, Arbel is also on the judging panel for L A M P’s 2015 Lighting Design Competition in Vancouver in September. He is also in the midst of renovating a 2,200-square-foot space in Berlin to establish Bocci’s European headquarters. Formerly a courthouse, the six-storey historic building will house offices, showroom, exhibition space and glass-blowing facilities. One has to wonder what his dreams will inspire next. h

RU LERS O F S PACE california closets goes way beyond wardrobes to the outer limits of space organization words janice strong
S
ometimes people undervalue the benefits of organized space in their homes, Danielle Lapointe believes. “I’ve had a lot of clients say they can’t believe the difference it’s made in their whole life,” says the California Closets designer. What makes a great storage space? According to Lapointe, one that utilizes every square inch, without over-crowding it. “You still have to be able to walk in or reach in and feel comfortable in it, but know that every nook and cranny has been used,” she says. “And usually a really great space has got different levels and heights.” One of the challenges designers like Lapointe encounter is spaces with “crazy angles and ceiling height.” Not a problem, she says, because California Closets installations are “100 per cent custom”, using locally sourced materials. »

HOME FURNISHINGS 2015
WHAT’S TRENDING: Closets are a huge factor in home design, but bedroom storage is evolving beyond the walk-in closet to full dressing rooms. What’s interesting is that some homeowners are converting spare bedrooms into dressing rooms. Rather than leaving an empty guest room empty, many are changing these spaces into closets. “Sometimes they do a combo spare room/dressing room and put a wall bed in there, with the rest dedicated to closet,” Lapointe says. Outside, your garage could be the largest room in your home, and it’s probably under utilized with the cars parked and stuff piled up along the walls. Popular garage conversions include custom storage systems that can hang bikes, golf clubs, sports gear, tools and just about anything else for easy access, and an organized space. Or there’s the full on conversion to another use, like a workshop or man cave. Lapointe has even converted a garage into a closet. For home offices, she is seeing a move to ergonomic spaces, in terms of desk height and chair mobility, and a down-sizing of desks, as our electronic equipment gets smaller and smaller. She also notes that offices are morphing from work spaces into storage spaces as we all get more mobile. But sometimes it’s the smallest spaces that make the most impact in someone’s life. “Its funny, the greatest reactions from my clients have been the ones where this tiny little closet has driven them nuts for 15 years, and then we do a few changes, add this and do that, and they can’t believe how the space is at least doubled the storage,” she notes.
WORKING WITH YOUR DESIGNER: [ 1 ] Leave enough consultation time for the consultation. On average, designers spend about two hours on the initial consultation. [ 2 ] Establish your budget. “If there is another party involved, discuss your budget before hand,” Lapointe advises. “It’s more of a win-win when we know how much you want to spend.” [ 3 ] Don’t clean your spaces. It’s better for designers to see the disaster. “We don’t judge,” she reassures, “we’ve seen it all.” [ 4 ] Share your ideas. Some people just want to be told, “do this”, some people are happy to offer ideas and be interactive with the designer. If the latter is you, go for it. TOP Home offices are moving to more ergonomic spaces. BOTTOM New storage systems can convert clutter into clean cabinets.
76
[ 5 ] Be realistic as far as install time. Depending on the complexity of the job, expect the whole process from start to install to range from four to eight weeks. h

FURNITURE MASTER MICHAEL HOST: WOODLAND COLLABORATIONS where nature meets design words markella mildenberger

f donning gumboots for a trek through forests rife with the thick scent of soil and bark to gather materials for your coffee table isn’t quite your thing, you’re in luck; this is Michael Host’s of MTH Woodworks specialty. Host not only forages his materials from British Columbia’s abundant wooded areas, but also designs what he calls west coast modern ‘furniture’. His designs have been garnering much publicity in the industry, with awards and media attention spotlighting his unique collaborations with nature. Host established MTH Woodworks in 2010 and has had a lifelong love affair with wood, starting with building yachts, to then working in various woodworking positions over the last decade, eventually settling into his creative métier with his new furniture line. As an avid outdoorsman, Host spends a large amount of his time in nature, where he finds endless sources of inspiration. “It [woodworking] is not just a product for me, it’s a whole lifestyle. I’m absolutely in love with wood,” Host remarks on how his business and designs have evolved over the span of his career. Evident throughout his shop, from the pieces of wood on worktables and projects arranged throughout, is Host’s undeniable love of the outdoors in his simple and elegant designs. Make no mistake, though his materials are composed of soy based resins and wood, the process of designing and creating each piece is as layered as the rings within the logs. The art, of course, is the patience and love that is engrained into each piece. »

THOUGH HOST LEAVES A SMALL FOOTPRINT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, HE LEAVES A DISTINCT MARK ON THE DESIGN INDUSTRY.
Host has some big ambitions for the coming year, and for the future of MTH Woodworks, with discussions of expanding his designs into the hospitality industry, where he can design and create massive scale pieces to suit. Having overcome the challenges that new businesses and great ideas inevitability give rise to, Host feels the combination of his sound product and design have given way to the opportunity to present to commercial possibilities. “Wood is a living breathing thing, so if I cast it like this, it’s set, basically in stone and it can decide to breathe and change and crack, but I’ve been able to overcome these with some trade secrets,” he says. Keeping up with Host won’t be difficult, as he has plans to attend IDSwest (Interior Design Show West) this fall, where he mentions he will unveil new designs and even a video series. To add to his incredible array of designs, his work is something you can feel good about, as each log is a bi-product of the logging industry, and his materials are easy on the environment. Though Host leaves a small footprint on the environment, he leaves a distinct mark on the design industry. h

REIMAGINED GOLDEN TIMES designer timothy oulton on bringing classic design onto the modern scene words roberta staley + photos provided by timothy oulton
F
urniture designer Timothy Oulton grew up in the village of Hale in Greater Manchester, northeast of Wales. A pretty English village with a 1,000-year history, Hale prospered throughout the Middle Ages and industrial period beginning in the 1700s. Into this bastion of well-heeled Englishness settled Oulton’s father, Major Philip Oulton, who opened an antiques business in 1976. Due to a spelling error by the sign maker, the name became Halo Antiques rather than Hale, anointing it with an aura of virtue. “We collected all sorts of stuff, from old school desks and chairs to leather sofas and grandfather clocks,” recalls Oulton, who went to work for his father at age 18 following a spiritual education under Benedictine monks. “I think it was the trunks that really struck me: travel and steamer, safari, old Louis Vuitton collectibles. Trunks have a mystique of travel – an aura of mystery – of journeys, conquest and exploration.” Oulton inherited the family business, but felt antiques were too, well, old-fashioned. With the help of master craftsmen, Oulton reimagined antiques to be “relevant and meaningful for the 21st century.” Trunks continue to be one of the many accoutrements of Oulton’s eclectic collection. His Globetrekker series, inspired by a dilapidated 1914 trunk discovered at a flea market, uses materials like canvas or military aircraft aluminum for stylish, rough-hewn desks, side and coffee tables and bookcases – items that spark conversation as much as provide function. »

For the first time in Canada, Oulton’s eponymous brand products are being sold at Luxe Home Interiors in Victoria. Oulton first braved global retail in 2008, taking on the world by selling in Los Angeles, Dallas, Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Harrods in London. In all these places, Oulton scours local markets for inspiration and new materials. His diverse furnishings owe their uniqueness to the inspiration found in things like ocean-softened driftwood, Georgian chandeliers, antique cowboy chaps, jewelry and sailing flags. His obsession, however, is leather. His latest leather offering, called Vagabond, is hand distressed “over and over and over until it takes on this incredibly soft, almost burnished finish.” Oulton learned his early lessons well: it is time that makes things beautiful. h ABOVE Axel round table (shown in genuine reclaimed vintage timber, natural) with Paradise chandelier and floor lamp. os Angeles-based interior designers Mat Sanders and Brandon Quattrone of Consort are not unfamiliar servicing high profile clients. Having just established their design firm in 2014, the pair has already worked with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars to transform their homes into brilliantly livable spaces. With a strong background in everything design- and style-related, including his work with Apartment Therapy and My Domaine, Sanders’ experience pairs well with Quattrone’s background in architecture. There is a unique balance with both personalities and skill sets that hasn’t gone unnoticed in the industry, as demonstrated by their growing portfolio of clientele. “We are successful through other successful people; it is about patronage,” Quattrone remarks as to how the firm has experienced a resounding response to its work. Their industry experience has evolved into what the firm is now well known for, and they make no concessions when it comes to giving credit to where it’s deserved, as Quattrone mentions his most influential mentor Shop Architects, who he credits for his ability to think outside the box. »

“It (working for Shop Architects) was a hugely influential atmosphere, the work they did. The concept that anything is possible – really next level work.” Sanders agrees and mentions that his influence came from Maxwell Ryan, Founder and CEO of Apartment Therapy who taught him everything, including really how to love design, seek it out and how to use the internet as a design tool. “Mat and I are partners in business and partners in life,” Quattrone adds. “We really balance each other, know our strong suits come in harmony together.” Sanders and Quattrone completed a beautiful project in Telluride, Colorado for the owner of Soul Cycle, and say the experience itself was inspiring. “The location was remote, natural and rugged, yet really needed an element of elegance,” says Quattrone.

“ANYTIME YOU CAN SEE A NEW PLACE IS A HUGE PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS. IT’S AN EXPERIENCE THAT ADDS TO OUR INSPIRATION”
The space itself required many creative resources, including logistics in bringing in materials, and creating an atmosphere and function to accommodate the owner’s entertaining style, while still maintaining comfort. Evidence of this kind of design and styling savvy are prominent throughout their portfolio, including one of Jessica Alba’s properties that they designed to emulate her travels while still keeping with the theme of being a livable space. Their high impact selection of materials and colour palettes go beyond the standard variations of whites and off whites, and it’s the beautiful combination of unsuspecting selections that really add the wow factor to their designs. While neither Quattrone nor Sanders have had the opportunity to showcase their work in the Canadian market yet, they add that they would love the opportunity to bring their design story and work into the Vancouver area, and add that their inspiration comes from travelling. “Anytime you can see a new place is a huge part of the design process. It’s that experience that adds to our inspiration.” Quattrone concludes. h

EARL OF SPENCER VISITS JORDANS INTERIORS charles spencer discusses the althorp living history furniture line words amanda stutt

C
harles, the ninth Earl Spencer, recently paid a visit to Jordans Interiors’ locations in both Vancouver and Victoria to promote his furniture line Althorp Living History, which is inspired by the 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century pieces found in his family’s famed, historic estate Althorp House. The Althorp Living History Furniture Collection started 13 years ago through a partnership with furniture maker Theodore Alexander, an agreement that has been signed for another four years, ensuring the brand’s continuation, Earl Spencer told H&L. “It’s been a much bigger success than I ever thought it could be, it’s been a wonderful thing,” said Earl Spencer. Earl Spencer said approximately 650 pieces from the collection have come to market, and are all handcrafted, with extensive attention to each piece’s intricate detail. One of Earl Spencer’s favourite pieces is the Washington Chest, a replica of an oak blanket chest that belonged to George Washington’s ancestors, who were distant cousins of the Spencers. While Althorp Living History furniture pieces are produced to replicate the antique furniture within Althorp House, Earl Spencer pointed out that some have been adapted for the sake of modern comfort. “The upholstery is much more comfortable than the originals, I think in the olden days people were all about design and not about comfort – they suffered for their art,” he said. “One of the reasons this collection works now, is because every generation has done a subconscious stock-take, [asking], ‘do I want to live without these, or not?,” said Earl Spencer. “So all the quirky pieces haven’t survived, and the reason these all look so good is they are all so classic they could go on forever.” Earl Spencer also said Althorp Living History pieces, while traditional in design, can blend well in contemporary or minimalist homes. “These pieces are timeless, and they do throw in a bit of character and a bit of backbone into a room,” Earl Spencer remarked. oncrete Cat was a concept born from both curiosity and necessity. Principal Matt Heide, artist and concrete connoisseur, gracefully acquired his skill in concrete art from developing concrete countertops in the Edmonton market. No sooner had he established a thriving little countertop business in the prairie capital that his curiosity for coloured concrete objects flourished. Heide began experimenting with various applications and moulds until he finally achieved what is known today as Concrete Cat, an Edmonton design studio Heide shares with his wife and business partner Shawna Heide and multidisciplinary artist Nathan Armstrong. A fusion of raw industrial material coupled with rich bursts of colour creates Concrete Cat’s line of bowls, vases, art and large-scale architectural products. The growing Alberta company has established a solid reputation in the design industry and has works for sale in catalogues from British Columbia to California to New York – with momentum only growing. »

ABOVE The Vesta is a minimal sculpture that can function as a vase, candle holder, or vessel – both indoors and outdoors.

“People have assumptions about what concrete can be, [and] the truth is unshaped concrete is pure chaos,” Heide said. “It’s creation and destruction all rolled into one neat little package. This chaos connects me to what it means to be human, our shared experience in flux. The work of Concrete Cat is characterized by juxtaposing a refined aesthetic and flamboyant use of colour with inherent industrial and rugged characteristics of concrete.” Using colour within their designs is something Heide describes as patterning; where the technique to achieve the desired colour results requires experimentation first, and then documenting the process to achieve a similar colour result for future pieces. Each piece may contain the same colour story, but how they become translated is another version. Viewing the impressive collections, what appears to be a random cascading of beautiful colour is in fact the patterning process Heide speaks to. As repetitive as patterning may sound, the process is largely based on Heide’s unique expertise and understanding of the industrial medium, coupled with good old intuition. He mentions that this experimentation is not just about his expert knowledge of the material, but also about “doing what you feel is right at the moment.” Coupling intuition with knowledge Heide has created consistently beautiful designs with the character of customized works. Concrete Cat is home to a few beautifully crafted lines, including Objects. The Objects collection contains an elegant variety of meticulously crafted pieces including Octavia, a simple octagon bowl in either natural concrete tones or patterned with some of Heide’s colouring techniques. The line includes his array of Vesta Vases, with softly sculpted mouths and a still life quality that speak to their appeal. Concrete Cat’s multi-disciplinary approach to concrete art is omnipresent throughout the collections, from smaller objects to larger scale architectural pieces. h

ARTIST PROFILE RYAN COOK
C ARVI N G O UT N E W IDE AS IN DECO R HGTV’s new reality series, carver kings gives a solid foundation for a new career as a professional chainsaw sculptor words roberta staley
R
yan Cook would never have predicted that an acting career in Hollywood would be the launch pad for a 2,500-kilometre journey north to Williams Lake, BC as a cast member of Carver Kings, HGTV’s new reality series. In turn, Carver Kings has given Cook – who now calls Vancouver home – a solid foundation for a new career as a professional chainsaw sculptor. The youngest artisan in the Carver Kings show, which started broadcasting this past April, Cook works alongside master carvers Mark Colp, Pete Ryan, Ken Sheen and Paul Frenette, perfecting the skills needed to create custom-made, cedar sculptures. The rugged carvings are companion pieces to the houses created by Williams Lake’s Pioneer Log Homes of British Columbia. Shot in the fall of 2014, Carver Kings is a spin-off of HGTV’s Timber Kings, which features master builders as they erect stately wood structures for an elite clientele. Cook, who sports an unruly mass of blond curls, had basic woodcarving skills when he joined the Carver Kings cast – developed on a short-lived OLN show called Saw Dogs about master woodcarvers. Cook had joined the cast of Saw Dogs on the heels of acting parts in 90210, The Hills, the sci-fi thriller 2012, as well as numerous commercials. After Saw Dogs was cancelled, Cook had two options: return to Los Angeles or continue carving. “Something about carving called to me,” says Cook, who

was born in Britannia Beach, 45 minutes north of Vancouver, where he has since established a studio called Saw Valley Carvings. Cook’s skills in chainsaw carving have progressed rapidly, and he can be found at competitions throughout North America, Europe and Australia when not on the Carver Kings set or in his studio. Woodcarving, like many other traditional crafts, is honed over many years of practice. Cook’s inexperience – in comparison to the Carver Kings’ veterans – was revealed in the opening episode, when he was tasked with carving a huge soaring eagle as the pinnacle of a 13-foot-high totem pole. Cook forgot to include the bird’s tail while chain sawing the rough outline of the raptor from a cedar log. The tail had to be cut from a different piece of wood and attached. The result is breathtaking, but at the time, “I was just gutted,” says Cook with a chuckle. Canadian carvers – part of a tiny clique of woodcarving artisans around the globe – are known for their mastery of our nation’s iconic wildlife. “What we bring to the stage is beautiful nature carvings – we know what a bear looks like,” says Cook, who studies the musculature of animals with the same discipline that Michelangelo analyzed the human form. One of Cook’s mentors on Carving Kings is Pete Ryan, who “can tell you where the fur tufts go on a bear’s chest, or know how many feathers there are – primary and secondary – on an eagle. Canadian carvers do fantastic bears and eagles,” Cook says. »
Canadian woodcarvers’ skills are the reason, says André Chevigny, the general manager of Pioneer Log Homes and a master log home builder, why his company’s North American clientele request custom-made sculptures to be integrated into a new log home. (It was this increasing demand that inspired the Timber Kings spin off.) Clients select a log home for many reasons: the romance of simpler times and the stalwart masculinity provided by the 100 to 150 cedar logs used in construction. They are monuments as much as homes, their beauty enhanced by the addition of one-off carvings. The woodcarvings can be amalgamated into a home’s main floor ceiling beams, outdoor benches, or large totems. The animal forms that emerge from within the sphere of a rough log honour the tree’s past. “You look at a log that’s 300 years old and you think about how many different animals and peoples have walked under it, how many storms and fires it has seen, and how much pollution it has sequestered to help clean our planet,” Chevigny says. All it takes is for the homeowner to have “a dream, and we’ll surpass it,” he adds. Chevigny’s favourite house – out of the 1,000 or so structures he estimates his business has built since 1973 – is located near Loveland, Colorado. The residence of the Gunter and Gloria Preuss family, Pioneer Log Homes artisans carved the embodiment of two giant, living Western Red Cedar trees with exposed roots standing sentinel on either side of the main entrance. Chevigny considers carving wood an art form – one where the sculptor is always trying to refine his or her skills. In pursuit of lost carving traditions and techniques, Chevigny has spent time in Europe studying 300-year-old log homes. “I have so much respect for the carvers of centuries ago – their art is the foundation of what we do.” h

HARMONY ARTS FESTIVAL
Harmony Arts Festival | July 31 - August 9, 2015 | West Vancouver, BC | harmonyarts.ca
West Vancouver celebrates 25 years of the Harmony Arts Festival West Vancouver’s iconic Harmony Arts Festival, sponsored this year by Odlum Brown, will celebrate its 25th season when festivities kick off on July 31, and organizers have pulled out all the stops to mark the occasion. The event runs until August 9, and will include art exhibits and lessons, musical tributes, evening movies, family activities and waterfront dining options. Notably new is the art installation by artist Marie Khouri called ‘You and I’. Organized by West Vancouver Museum and Pantea Haghighi, ‘You and I’ is a temporary public art installation to encourage dialogue as well as provide a place for people to relax and enjoy the festival. Viewers are invited to interact with the elegant hand carved sculptures, which serve simultaneously as a seating area.
116
Another Festival first is the boat valet service. A pop-up marina allows boaters from all over the coast to reserve one of the dozen buoys just off the West Vancouver shore and be chauffeured by Zodiac to and from their moorage to the ‘Club 25’ area in Ambleside Park where they can enjoy complimentary drinks and obtain information on the festival and West Vancouver. “Art takes so many forms,” said Marnie Wilson, Harmony Arts Festival publicist. “And that is what the festival is doing. They really have incorporated so many facets of the arts.”

L ATEST IN LUXU RY SUV S what’s new on the showroom floor words tony whitney
T
he demand for luxury SUVs around the world is so strong right now, even automakers once thought unlikely to go anywhere near the segment are prepping new products. While long-established makers of premium off-roaders like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Land Rover, Lincoln, Cadillac, Lexus and others are busy with new offerings, it’s the makers new to SUVs that are grabbing most of the attention right now. Who would have imagined a few years back that even Rolls Royce would take a run at the SUV market? Not to be outdone, Bentley is close to launching a production vehicle and Jaguar, which once said its business was strictly cars, is getting closer to the showroom stage with its C-X17. Lamborghini is going ahead with production of its Urus SUV, though people with long memories will remember that the Italian supercar builder was selling its rugged LM002 back in the 1980s. The sleek and sensual Urus is a very different vehicle to the old “Rambo Lambo” and with VW-Audi behind the project, it’s bound to be a serious contender. Even though there is significant buzz around these newcomers to the SUV business, there are some fascinating new products from automakers that have been established in this segment for years. Lexus is offering the NX, its entry into the growing compact luxury SUV/crossover class and Lincoln has a refreshed Navigator. Land Rover is giving the old and respected “Discovery” nameplate a new lease on life with its very newest product. Mercedes-Benz has an old campaigner on its books with the G-Class, which first rolled a civilian wheel back in 1979 after first debuting as a military vehicle. It is the most long-lived passenger vehicle in Mercedes’ history and eager customers just won’t let it fade away. h AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015

LAMBORGHINI 2016 URUS
Lamborghini showed a concept some time back, but it was only recently production was given the go-ahead for this sports luxury SUV. The Urus is certainly a stylistic success, as one might expect from the Italian ‘exoticar’ maker that’s now part of the VW-Audi group. It will be based on an Audi/ Bentley/Porsche platform, so expect a version of Quattro all-wheel drive. Probable engine is a 5.2-litre V-10, though this isn’t finalized yet. One engine plan includes a powerful electric motor with plug-in feature, which would add some useful torque to what already seems a great deal of power. Much carbon fibre will be used around the bodyshell, so expect this to be an expensive rig, though fans of the marque will be happy. No pricing yet.

LEXUS 2015 NX
The new Lexus NX may be compact, but it’s still very much a Lexus, with a refinement drivers will find surprising given its dimensions. In the cockpit, the ambiance is very similar to that of more costly products from Toyota’s upscale division and as such, among the best in the industry. Buyers can choose from a turbocharged gasoline engine or a hybrid and both offer commendable economy. New interior features include a wireless charging tray for portable devices, so no more fishing around with cables and plugs. Also on the spec sheet is a touchsensitive remote interface that uses a pad to set a range of vehicle systems. Safety upgrades include a head-up display, blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert. Other technical wonders abound in this interesting new Lexus. Priced from $42,000-$55,000.

LINCOLN 2015 NAVIGATOR
Lincoln’s big Navigator first appeared in 1997 and it has been gaining popularity ever since. It’s based on a Ford truck platform, which means it’s just about as rugged as an SUV can get. Even so, the ride is super-smooth and the cabin design is both luxurious and practical. Naturally, every electronic convenience and safety aid is included in the basic spec. It is beautifully built and the fit and finish is now as good as anything in the industry. The Nav was refreshed for 2015 inside and out, so it’s close to a new model. With the refresh, the big old V-8 was dropped for a 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6 which develops 380-horsepower. For 2017, an all-new Navigator will arrive – the fourth generation of the model. Priced at $75,110.

LAND ROVER 2015 DISCOVERY SPORT
MERCEDES-BENZ 2015 G-CLASS
The most costly of all Mercedes-Benz SUVs and also the most long-lived, the G-Class has a no-nonsense, utilitarian look that reflects its military beginnings. This is an exceptionally sophisticated vehicle from a technical standpoint and is unashamedly luxurious. Its ruggedness and durability are well proven and its four-wheel drive system second to none. Despite its practicality, the G-Class retains an opulence and desirability that will turn as many heads at the country club as it will in seriously demanding off-road surroundings. Top engine is a very potent hand-built G 63 AMG twin-turbo V-8 developing a heady 536-horsepower. Priced at $152,700.
6
JAGUAR 2016 C-X17
Jaguar’s entry into the world of SUVs is late, but the C-X17 crossover is bound to be a very worthwhile contender, given the company’s envied reputation for sportiness. Shown so far in concept form, it has that inherent “Jaguarness” that the company’s designers strive for. Styling is tidy and elegant and the grille is an instant Jaguar I/D feature. Bodywork is aluminum like other vehicles from the British automaker and it’s built on an all-wheel drive platform. The engine is a 3.0-litre supercharged V-6, but a range of 4-cylinder engines are being developed. C-X17 is the concept name, but the production vehicle will carry F-Pace badges. No prices have been announced.
AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015
Land Rover had a Discovery in its range for many years until it was dropped in North America, but now the name is back on an interesting premium compact SUV that replaces the LR2. Like all Land Rover products, consider this a serious off-road vehicle, but it’s just fine on the freeway too. It uses a thrifty 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a 9-speed (yes, nine!) automatic transmission. The cabin is finished to an impressively high level of quality and has seating for seven. There’s a lot of Range Rover in the exterior styling, but few will complain about that. Prices are very competitive, which will likely worry makers with more mundane nameplates as many have become very expensive in recent times. Priced from $41,490 - $49,990.

TAKING THE TABLE TO THE FARM araxi longtable flips the farm to table approach words catherine roscoe barr + photos aaron barr
W
hen you arrive at Pemberton’s North Arm Farm you’re literally taken aback by the majesty of Mount Currie, the northernmost peak in the Garibaldi Ranges – and that’s before you see the elegant dinner table, nestled among rows of brightly coloured blossoms and large leafy greens, draped with white linens and set for 300. In its fifth year at the picture-perfect estate, the Araxi Longtable flips the farm to table approach on its head and brings the table to the farm. The culinary finesse and impeccable service that have made Whistler’s Araxi Restaurant and Oyster Bar an internationally adored destination since opening in 1981 are transported to this al fresco wonderland, hosted by farm owner (and former Pemberton mayor) Jordan Sturdy and his family. While executive chef James Walt, who has led Araxi’s kitchen for nearly 20 years, and his team prepare a regionally-inspired, four-course, family-style meal in an adjacent row of white tents, wine director and 2013 Sommelier of the Year, Samantha Rahn makes sure every glass is filled, and restaurant director Neil Henderson ensures every guest’s mood is merry. Much of the ingredients for dinner are plucked from North Arm’s surrounding 60 acres, where fertile fields yield more than 40 different organically grown crops. Both at work and at home, Walt has been practicing this farm-fresh philosophy for nearly a lifetime. From his childhood on a farm near Ottawa where his mom “grew everything” and a four-year stint at 100-mile-diet-champion Sooke Harbour House after graduating from the Stratford Chefs School, to his appointment as executive

chef at the Canadian Embassy in Rome where he adopted the Italians’ local market mentality, and now his young family’s productive garden plot at their Pemberton residence. “Where we live is fantastic because it’s an agricultural community and it’s just a real part of the culture,” says Walt of the pristine seasonal ingredients available from the surrounding farms, ranches, rivers, lakes and Pacific Ocean. “If you’re eating locally you’re eating well,” he says. “It benefits you nutritionally to eat products that are in season.” At the Longtable, the entire dining experience is heightened by the spectacular backdrop, the special ingredients harvested nearby at their prime, the communal energy of 300 strangers fast becoming friends, and the relaxed pace as the event unfolds. Upon their late-afternoon arrival, guests mingle in a covered breezeway and on the manicured lawn, where canapés are passed and cocktails are poured, and before walking along a tractor-worn path toward the dinner table, they’re invited to tour the farm to see firsthand the fields that nurture much of what they’re about to consume. As the last bites of pastry chef Aaron Heath’s desserts are enjoyed, the entire team lines up for the eruption of applause that meets their bow. Guests slowly trickle out, pausing to shake the hands of Walt, Rahn, Henderson and their team, thank the Sturdy family for sharing their home, and take one last look at Mount Currie as the sunlight begins to fade behind it. This year’s Araxi Longtable at North Arm Farm will be held over the Labour Day long weekend on Saturday, September 5. For information, go to araxi.com/longtable. h

Lori Popadiuk I find painting to be my form of meditation. It gives me an outlet through which to let an unstructured flow of creativity evolve. It is a process where I notice myself being present. I notice the beauty that surrounds me, my breath, the joy I feel. I notice everything all at once. Most recently my work has been influenced by a 6 month sabbatical in Europe where I was inspired to create differently, to trust my instincts and not be afraid of change and instead to embrace change with my full being.
